Have you ever been rejected? It’s not a pretty good feeling but our guest for today has been rejected 95 times by publishers but still strived and persisted until she published her first book. This week, we are going to talk about determination and dyslexia with the Author of the Dream Snatcher Series and The Unmapped Chronicles, Abi Elphinstone.
Abi grew up in Scotland, where she spent her weekends building dens in the woods, hiding in treehouses, and running across the highlands.
Despite being labeled as ‘unteachable’ and ‘prone to spasmodic outbursts of silliness’ by my headteacher, she got through school, and after obtaining an English degree at Bristol University and teaching English in Africa, Berkshire, and London, she is now back to hiding in tree houses and building dens—sometimes in real life, mostly with her books.

This week, we'll learn more about the benefits of webbing and mind mapping for children with specialized learning needs. During my recent conversation with a multisensory coach, she shared how she tutors children with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning disabilities, which, interestingly, is a lot similar to my approach.
Our guest for this week runs a reading coaching service called EBL Coaching, which tutors over 2000 people across multiple locations in the United States. Dr. Emily Levy has got a master's degree in special education, and a doctorate in general education, and has been in the world of remediating reading and writing and special education for the last 20-plus years.

Do you consider yourself a visual thinker? When Temple was interviewing people about how they think, she was shocked to know that some people are not thinking in pictures. She thought everybody thinks in pictures.
I got the honour to talk to Temple Grandin, who is an autistic author, professor, inventor, and many more. She did not talk until she was 3 years old. Fortunately, she had a speech therapist early. She was bullied for being weird but she loved flying things like airplanes and kites. Today Temple is a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and half of the cattle in the US are handled in facilities that Temple designed. She even has an Emmy Award-winning movie about her life produced by HBO and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016.
In this podcast, Temple shared how she came up with the idea of writing the book Visual Thinking during the lockdown. She also shared her concern about the diminishing high-end trade jobs in the United States because of the change in the Education system.

If you’ve ever tried teaching your child to read, you’ll know that it's not as easy as it looks, especially for a child with a learning difference. I had a great conversation with Nora Chahbazi, the founder of Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction or EBLI. She has been training and coaching teachers, parents, and educators for over 20 years to help them teach students how to read.
Nora shares her experience of how EBLI started and what made her pursue the field. Her daughter was having trouble reading but the school didn’t think it was anything unusual. She began researching ways to help her child and found a revolutionary book that really made a difference for her child. Shortly after, Nora founded EBLI and now, they have trained thousands of teachers from around the world.
Nora also sheds light on the different approaches to teaching reading, like balance literacy and phonics-based, and where her approach falls into the mix.

I had a very interesting conversation with Karen Daniels about hypercreativity. Karen has a Masters's degree in Education Psychology. She has also written 9 books of both fiction and non-fiction. She does content writing and ghostwriting for all sorts of people. She also teaches Martial Arts apart from being a full-time mum.
In the episode, Karen talked about the difference between hypercreativity and creativity, her being a writer and her journey through her creative path. She also shared about the limit of creativity and how to make the most out of it.

This week, I had an interesting conversation with Sanjay Kapoor, a director for proposals for a huge company in the US. He just recently discovered that he has dyslexia and ADHD by looking at materials from Made by Dyslexia and other dyslexia organizations. He also listened to several podcasts where he found us and reached out to us.

I talked to Alan Thornburrow, the CEO of Salvesen Mindroom Centre and a parent of children with dyslexia. Salvesen Mindroom Centre or SMC has been working with dyslexia and neurodiversity for over 21 years and is continuously supporting people living with learning differences.
Alan Thornburrow disengaged from school at 16. He struggled to find his place in the world until he managed to find a career in finance. Learning on the job, he realised he was learning more at work than at school and thought there might be others like him who weren’t successful at school but can do well in the real world.
Alan has spent 20 years advocating for people that might see themselves as ‘other’ in the world. Alan’s job is to influence decision-makers, policymakers and funders into making the right decisions on inclusion and diversity in schools, the workplace and society more generally.

This week I had an interesting conversation with R.S. Mellette, a scriptwriter and author with dyslexia. He was the script coordinator for Xena the Warrior Princess, Nutty Professor 2 and Blue Crush. Mellette has also worked and blogged for the film festival Dances With Films as well as the novelist collective, From The Write Angle, and he is on the board of the L.A. region of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators.
In this episode, we are going to explore how R.S. Mellette came to know about dyslexia and how it helped him in being a screenwriter and, later on, being an author. He’s just about to publish the first book of a series called Kiya and the Morian Treasure which actually takes him more than 20 years to publish.

This week, I sat down with not just one but two educational diagnosticians. Dr. Abbey Weinstein and Lauri Peterson assess people with specific learning difficulties in the US. As of today, they have tested more than 1200 people with SPLD both adult and children. Combined, they have over 40 years of experience in identifying people with dyslexia and ADHD.

This week, I sat down with Avi Warshavsky, the Founder and CEO of MindCET. They gather groups of entrepreneurs in an incubator environment and help them establish their businesses. He’s also the founder of Global Education Technology Startups Awards or GESAwards, one of the biggest awarding bodies for Ed-Tech Startups in the world. He is also the father of 5 children and 4 of them have dyslexia.
Avi Warshavsky shared his background on how he came to be in the startup world and how his father’s dyslexia helped him observe his children’s dyslexia. Avi also talked about closing the gap with dyslexia and the future of technology in terms of assisting dyslexia.

Ash Voisine was a business and entrepreneurship graduate but when a teacher of her child admitted that they can’t help the child, she decided to homeschool her kids. She looked for other ways to teach with programs like the Orton-Gillingham system. She’s now finishing her master’s degree in special education.

Children with dyslexia often have brilliant and incredible stories to share in their heads but always struggle to get them out and put them into words. A lot of the time, their imagination and creativity go beyond what was required in the question and they get so overwhelmed halfway that they ended up leaving it unfinished. Going off-topic is a common occurrence and the lack of cohesiveness forces the teachers to mark it as failed.
It’s in every exam in the world they ask students to “Write a Short Story”. It sounds easy but for a child with dyslexia, it’s not. We, dyslexics, have no shortage of mind-bending theories and hyper-realistic worlds to share but how to share it is the problem. How do you make sure you have a beginning, middle, and end in your story? How do you make sure your teachers get what you wanted to say? And most importantly, how do you finish the story on time?

This week, we had a lovely conversation with Katrina Cochrane, the head of education and policy for the British Dyslexia Association. Katrina has had a wide range of knowledge regarding dyslexia for the past few decades but we focused on what’s happening with dyslexia in the workplace.
As dyspraxic herself, Katrina was exposed to the struggles and confusion of neurodiverse workers in the workplace. She later specialised in dyslexia teaching and became part of the British Dyslexia Association.
In the UK, Katrina observed that dyslexia in the workplace had improved more than in schools in the last ten years. Companies are learning how to accommodate people with dyslexia as they understand that it can be a good investment in their companies. Listen to the podcast as Katrina also discussed what a workplace needs assessment is and how it is assessed.

This week, I have invited Lois Letchford, a returning guest here in Dyslexia Explored, to talk about her recently published research paper through the International Literacy Association titled “Moving beyond Decoding: Teaching Pronoun Resolution to Develop Reading Comprehension”.
In her paper, Lois Letchford and her co-author, Timothy Rasinski, identified that less proficient readers like people with dyslexia often are not as proficient in resolving pronouns. It is another comprehension task that teachers often dismiss as the student being lazy or dumb.
Lois shared with us how pronouns such as; he, she, they, it, etc., confuse people with dyslexia. They often find it difficult to remember which noun was the pronoun replacing. She also offered strategies on how we, as parents and teachers, can help our students overcome this challenge. Listen to her story now.

Have you tried studying another language? We all know it can be extremely hard to learn something you are not used to. Now, imagine what a child with dyslexia feels after moving to a country with a very different language. Learning a language is hard enough, but to learn another language while you are still learning to read with dyslexia is daunting. That is what our guest for today has experienced, when she and her family transferred to another country. Aimee Kyffin was not yet diagnosed with dyslexia when they moved to the Netherlands. Early on, she was having difficulty reading and understanding her lessons but people were just shrugging it off as they suspected it was just because she wasn’t used to the language.
This week, I had a great conversation with Aimee Kyffin as she talked about her dyslexia story. She also shared a new technology they developed where children can learn in a multi-sensory way. It basically lets you use colour to visualise spelling. It’s a very interesting technology which they plan on publishing in 2022. Listen to the podcast and hear her story.

This week, I had an interesting conversation with Elizabeth Trudeau, a mother of a daughter with dyslexia. Elizabeth wants to share her passion, a project she just completed which initially started when she wanted to help her child understand her dyslexia. She noticed that her child responded greatly to stories about other professionals with dyslexia who have made it through school and life.
Seeing that other children also responded well to these success stories, Elizabeth wrote and published a children’s story book about real life people with dyslexia. In this podcast, Elizabeth shared what she realised while writing and researching the book about the social and emotional aspect of dyslexia and what we, as parents, can do about it. This week, I had a very interesting and musical conversation with Ruth Travers, the founder of Stave House. Ruth has developed a process for children to master music theory through visual and creative language. As we learnt from the previous episode, dyslexia is affecting children to learn and read music just as it is affecting them to read words.

This week, we invited children with dyslexia, parents and educators to ask them about their experiences with learning music. It surprises me that people are amazed when they hear that dyslexia might affect reading music when it definitely affects reading words.
In this episode, we want to start a conversation about dyslexia and music because there aren’t many people who are talking about this. The group talked about the struggles they or their children have encountered and some of the techniques that helped them cope. Music educators shared some common challenges that children with learning differences can be tripped up with, when learning music. This discussion barely scratched the surface but hopefully this will spark a new wave of conversations about learning music in a different more dyslexia-friendly way.

We have a very fascinating story we’d like to share this week. It’s about Andrew Nehring who has a photographic memory, excellent auditory memory and dyslexia. It is a very interesting combination because people tend to correlate dyslexia with poor memory. Some of Andrew’s teachers didn’t believe he has dyslexia because he could relay what the teachers told him.
In this episode of Dyslexia Explored, I talked to Andrew Nehring as he shared his dyslexia story and how playing dungeons and dragons as a child helped him write stories for his books. Andrew has written 2 science fiction novels while he was in college. Now, he’s going to publish his 3rd book “David Massie and the Quantum Flux” this July 2021.

Let’s listen to the story of Lois Letchford, a physical education teacher who became a reading specialist when she discovered her son has dyslexia. She’s written a book called “Reversed: A Memoir”, where she shares her son's story and her own - learning differences.
The school diagnostician called her son the worst child he’s ever seen in 20 years of teaching. That fueled her and her son to look for ways to help him with his dyslexia. She’s passionate about transforming literacy instruction for the most vulnerable students. She believes that we can’t change the children but we can control what we teach.

Have you ever heard of the job title Head of Happiness? That’s exactly the job title of our guest for today. She’s a stand-up comedian who thought of bringing stand-up comedy into schools to help them with reading and writing. This week I had a very interesting conversation with Stephanie Davies, the founder of Laughology.
Stephanie says that her misbehaviour in school was a direct result of her difficulties keeping up in class. Stephanie started her own business and practically invented a job that she’s happy doing. This week, I had a great conversation with Aarian Daniels, a mum who has written a book based on her daughter’s dyslexia struggles. Aarian found out about dyslexia when her youngest daughter was diagnosed and fought the school for her daughter's needs.
She recently published her book about their dyslexia journey and how they overcame dyslexia. She also founded an organisation called “Lex Talk Dyslexia” to help other kids with dyslexia in their area get their much-needed resources and accommodations. Listen to her story now.

This week, I had a great conversation with Mike Guest, a dyslexic, who has been self-employed his whole life. We talked about the dynamic aspect of dyslexia. He’s an established photographer, who’s now moved into water photography. He compares the adaptability of dyslexia to surfing in the water. You have to go with the flow and adjust according to what nature throws at you. He recently posted a film that tackles mental health, dyslexia and immersion with nature. He also co-founded a movement called Dawn Days where they go to the beach for an hour at dawn and take pictures until sunrise. Listen to Mike’s story now.

This week, we had a great conversation with Cigdem Knebel, a mum who wrote stories for her child with dyslexia. She is now the owner of a publishing company that publishes decodable storybooks for children with dyslexia.
It all started when she found out that her son had dyslexia. He was worried and stressed because his peers were reading advanced books while he was still stuck with “baby” books. She took it upon herself to write decodable storybooks for him. He enjoyed it and shared it with other children who had the same problem. She was encouraged to publish these books so that other children may access them. That’s how the Simple Words Books started. Listen to her story now.

This week we are going to talk about designing cars with dyslexia. I sat down with Matthew Head, a dyslexic car designer who started out as a mechanic. He looked for jobs that he thought he could undertake but got rejected for not having an engineering degree. So he went to university and got a Masters's in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He is now a Senior Vehicle Design Engineer for a luxury car company. Matt’s story resonates with a lot of people.
Many dyslexics, because school got in the way, end up doing jobs relating to maintenance and repair when they really should be building and designing things. Find out Matt’s story now.

We have a very special and mind-bending episode this week. It’s all about a man with dyslexia who worked 34 years as a driver for a newspaper company and recently published a book with himself as the main character.
Let’s follow the story of Ed Calkins who had troubles with self-confidence all his life. As a hobby, he created fascinating stories with characters based on real-life people and shared them with his colleagues and friends. One of his friends is an author, Denise Unland, who decided to include Ed, as one of the characters in her trilogy.
The character, Ed, ended up being a fan favourite that fans of the trilogy wanted to know more about his back story. Ed Calkins took on that challenge and wrote a novel based on the character with the same name. At first, Ed wasn’t confident about his story but after hearing positive feedback about the character, he was motivated to finish his novel. Listen to his story now.

In podcast episode 99, we discussed the ‘Access to Work’ scheme by the United Kingdom government which grants disabled students/professionals allowance to the workplace. It is the government’s way to get disabled people into work and become a productive member of society.

A lot of dyslexics excel in sports. Some professional athletes even attribute their success to dyslexia. This week we are going to talk about this fascinating subject with Sophia Gomma, a licensed Davis facilitator who helps dyslexic students in school and sports.
People with dyslexia are naturally very good at dynamic reasoning which can be very helpful in competitive games. However, there can be underlying roadblocks. Executing set plays and following the coach's instructions can sometimes be difficult for people with dyslexia. The coach may misinterpret this as the athlete being lazy.
We invited Sophia Gomma to our podcast this week to talk about dyslexia in sports and the factors that may affect athletes with dyslexia. Sophia also shares a lot of insights on coaching dyslexics and knowing what they need to maximise their capabilities in sports.

We have a practical but exciting podcast this week. We invited Kerry Pace again as a guest on dyslexia explored. This is part 3 of our series with her. In episode 80, she talks about her dyslexia story and the journey she embarked on which enabled her to tutor university students online, mostly nursing students, with dyslexia. In episode 81, she talks about the importance of learning support through online videos for students and professionals.
Today, we talked about a very interesting and very helpful program that the United Kingdom implements but only a few know about. In the UK, we have a scheme called “Access to Work” which is basically giving disabled student allowance to the workplace. It is the government's way to get disabled people into work and become a productive member of society. This ensures companies will build ramps and other infrastructure that allows persons with disabilities to have access to the workplace.
Why do we have to know about this? In the UK, dyslexia is considered a disability so people with dyslexia have the right to avail of this. This opens up so many opportunities for people with dyslexia. Listen to the episode to find out more.

This week we had the opportunity of meeting Dean Bragonier as our podcast guest. He is the founder of Noticeability.org, a non-profit organisation that focuses on introducing middle school-aged children to the cognitive advantages associated with dyslexia. Dean has presented quite a few talks about dyslexia, including a TEDx talk on the true gifts of the dyslexic mind.
In this episode, Dean talks about his dyslexia story and his struggle for acceptance from himself and from society. Dean considers himself privileged, being from a family that had enough resources to get him a diagnosis and give him proper accommodations, yet he still felt that he was alone and not accepted from his peer group. That is why he created Noticeability, to help children with dyslexia understand how their mind works and rebuild their self-worth.

Dr. Susie Nyman is one of those teachers you’d want your children to have. She is very passionate about how students learn differently using multi-sensory learning. When she was a child she noticed she learnt better using textbooks that incorporated cartoon images. When she had her son she noticed he couldn't remember his spellings when he wrote on blue paper, so she tried different colored paper instead. That’s when her son started to remember his spellings!
In school, where she taught biology she used props such as a giant heart, where students could go and put sticky notes on. These notes were colour-coded to differentiate between the deoxygenated and oxygenated parts. She used auditory learning by singing the keywords to a popular song and sometimes they shaped coloured playdough to identify different parts. Multi-sensory teaching stimulates the brain in many ways and can improve the learning process.
This week, we discover the dyslexia story of Dr. Susie Nyman and her unconventional ways of teaching science. She also shared a lot of tips for students, parents and teachers

One day her daughter came home from school and said they’d been working on the Battle of Hastings. She went on to say that although they’d worked on this topic for weeks she couldn’t remember a single thing and they had an exam next week! That night Bambi Gardiner recreated the Battle of Hastings on her kitchen table. The next morning her daughter remembered most of it! Bambi realised that it's not enough for kids with dyslexia to rely on plain text to learn. So she found a lot of creative ways to help her child, like turning her notes into cartoon characters and creating colorful science flashcards that she can carry with her. All this helped her gain an A in her exam.
This was the birth of Oaka Books, an award-winning book company that publishes interactive books for children with dyslexia. This week, Darius sat down with the founder, Bambi Gardiner, and talked about how it all started, what it’s like being a parent of a child with dyslexia and what’s next for Oaka Books.

We have a fascinating case study for you about tackling common entrance exams or GCSEs with dyslexia. Denise Goulding, a parent of a child with dyslexia, agreed to share their story about how her daughter managed to get A’s and B’s in her entrance exam. Denise had been with us in the BulletMap Academy for 2 years now and in fact, we already featured her in the podcast a couple of times. You can go back and listen to their dyslexia story if you want.
Today, however, we focus on her daughter’s entrance exams and what are the strategies she did to prepare for it. This will be a visual-heavy episode as Denise was sharing the maps that they did so we recorded a video of the conversation which you’ll see in the shownotes.

Stephen Martin thought his dyslexia would just disappear after finishing school. He was diagnosed early in his life and had the same struggles that most kids with dyslexia had. But he recently just realized what dyslexia really means when he talked to a dyslexia practitioner. He then realized all the things and decisions that he had made were, in one way or another, affected by his dyslexia. He’s now sharing this realization in a podcast called “Truth About Dyslexia”, which is out on iTunes, Spotify, or any other channels.
This week, we talked to Stephen Martin, an entrepreneur in the digital marketing space and business coach, where he shared about his dyslexia story, the moment of realization with the dyslexia practitioner, and how it reshaped his way of life and way of thinking about dyslexia. This week, we have an interesting conversation with Harriet Kelsall, one of the most respected designers and business trailblazers in the UK jewellery industry. She was the 2016 HSBC Forward Ladies “Retail Business Woman of the year”, was Everywoman’s “Retail Woman of the Year” in 2011, one of The Institute of Directors magazine’s six “women who have most changed the business world” in 2014 and is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and of the City of London.
She was the Chair of the National Association of Jewellers (now deputy chair) and is a non executive director for the British Hallmarking Council. She has also been a non executive director for the Responsible Jewellery Council. Harriet is passionate about helping creative business flourish and her book on the subject called “The Creative's Guide to Starting a Business: How to turn your talent into a career” which won at the 2019 Business Book of the Year Awards.
In this episode, Harriet shares her story of growing up with dyslexia and how she developed strategies to overcome it. She also talks about focusing on the positive side of dyslexia and celebrating the things that you are good at instead of the things you are not.

In this week’s episode, we have a very special guest. She and her husband are very well known in the dyslexia community. Their works have inspired thousands of dyslexics around the world to accept their dyslexia, own it, and be proud of it. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Fernette Eide, the co-author of “The Dyslexia Advantage”, with us on our 90th episode of the podcast. The Dyslexia Explored podcast and the BulletMap Academy have been heavily influenced by the book. We even covered the chapters of the book here in the podcast. If you haven’t read the book yet, we highly recommend you should.
As with a lot of people, Dr. Fernette and Dr. Brock were first exposed to dyslexia when their first child showed signs of trouble at preschool. They’ve observed a huge disconnect between what they see with their kid at home as opposed to what they see at school. They observed that the support available for kids is poor but it took them a little while to realize what was really happening and that led them to write a book called “The Mislabelled Child”. In this week's episode, we had an interesting conversation with Rosie Bissett, the CEO of Dyslexia Association Ireland and the Chair of the European Dyslexia Association. Rosie shared about what got her into dyslexia and eventually why she fell into the dyslexia cause. We also learn more about the Dyslexia Association of Ireland and Online Dyslexia Assessment.
Online Dyslexia Assessments have been gaining popularity nowadays especially with the COVID situation. Before, people came to the clinic to have their testing done but now that it’s not practical to do that, associations like the Dyslexia Association of Ireland made online assessments possible. This week on the Dyslexia Explored, we explore the story of Nigel Lockett. Nigel, only recently, disclosed to the public his dyslexia. He was already a successful businessman turned professor at Entrepreneurship and Head of the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at the University of Strathclyde before he officially “came out”. We’ll discuss why he was reluctant to share his dyslexia with his peers and coworkers before and what made him go public with his dyslexia. Dr. Erica Warren, a learning specialist, an educational therapist, instructor, artist, and advocate, had created hundreds or more publications, instructional courses, enriching podcasts, informative blogs, and youtube channels, all to spread awareness on dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. In this week’s dyslexia explored episode, we had a great conversation with Dr. Warren about her dyslexia story where she shared how she developed medical issues that she says were probably stress-related and what she did to overcome it.
When she was a child, she felt bullied at school and at home that it started to affect her body in a form of ulcer. She also, later on, had mysterious muscle pain in the groin, knee, or feet but immediately went away when they wanted to have an operation. This week, we had a very interesting conversation with Theo Gough, Author of the Conquering Dyslexia Book and host of the Conquering Dyslexia podcast. When he was in year three, Theo was diagnosed with dyslexia and was said to be one of the worst dyslexics in England. He loved talking but his parents couldn’t understand what he was saying. He mispronounced his name every time and it took him 6 years to learn how to pronounce it correctly. All this and more has affected his confidence and self-esteem.
His life changed almost instantly when he watched a video on youtube. He started viewing his life differently. He started to believe that he can achieve anything instead of just waiting for other people to help him. Now, he wrote a book called “conquering dyslexia” to share his experience of building his confidence in living with dyslexia. He also has a podcast and youtube channel of the same name. Scanning Pens is spearheading the Go Red for Dyslexia campaign for this year's international dyslexia week which is on the 5th to 9th of October, 2020. This episode of Dyslexia Explored, we talked to the CEO and co-founder of Scanning Pens, Jack Churchill, to explore his dyslexia story and how he came up with creating the award-winning company Scanning Pens and share what you can do for the Go Red for Dyslexia campaign.
Jack Churchill is proud to be the CEO and Co-Founder of Scanning Pens. He set the business up 17 years ago because he’s passionate about technology being a great enabler and support. Jack is determined to help young people and adults with dyslexia and other reading difficulties obtain greater access to printed text through assistive technology, both in their everyday lives and exams. In recent years Scanning Pens has been fortunate enough to win a number of prominent awards including BETT Exporter of the Year 2019 and BETT Company of the Year 2020. In this episode, David shares a lot of experiences throughout his life but one thing that he emphasized is the importance of building strong, long term relationships with people. At school, you don’t just read a book that the teacher gives you. It’s also important to work with people around. Appreciate what the teachers are doing and understand what they are expecting from you. He said if the teacher likes you, he most likely wants to see you succeed. This is the story of Micki Boas, a mom of 2 children with dyslexia, who legally fought the school for 4 years just for her child to have access to proper dyslexic support which is supposed to be provided through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In this episode, Micki shares her dyslexia story and how she came up with writing a book called "ONE IN FIVE: How we're fighting for our dyslexic kids in a system that's failing them", a book about her experience and 200 other parents and educators battling the school system for their children’s rights as individuals with dyslexia. In the book, Micki highlighted the following major obstacles that keep on tripping them up; 1. The lack of funding, 2. The lack of early intervention, and 3. Under-trained teachers. This is Part 2 of our interview with Kerry Pace, the founder of Diverse Learners, a tutoring service where they support students and workers with Special Learning Difficulties by online tutoring. In the previous episode, we talked about her life story and how she found out that she has dyspraxia, ADD, and sensory processing disorder. In this episode, we find out how she saw a need to create her own online tutoring company by observing the Nursing students who were diagnosed with various learning difficulties dropping out of school because it’s impossible for them to access that much-needed support. Aside from the hectic timetable in school and punishing shifts at hospitals, most university-based support don’t open from May to October. The allotted one-to-one support for 1 hour a week is not being met. That’s where Diverse Learners comes in. Through online tutoring, they can provide that support without having to meet the students face-to-face. They can do it for an hour a week without during their free time. The therapist said she knew right away after 30 minutes of meeting her. All the clues were visible. That shocked her. Kerry Pace was helping students with dyslexia without knowing that she has Dyspraxia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Sensory Processing Disorder. There were a lot of circumstances that unknowingly hid Kerry’s learning difficulty issues throughout her childhood. The clumsiness, inattentiveness, and absences at school were attributed to other factors rather than dyspraxia. She was also great at masking these signs being innovative and adaptive. With the help of these attributes, she was able to identify a problem that no one else did. In part 1 of the 3 part episode, we discover the exciting story of Kerry Pace and how she created Diverse Learners, an online tutoring service for people with dyspraxia.

A conversation about shame and dyslexia and the power of empathy with Stan Gloss, inspired by Brene Brown’s books on shame. Two years ago we made a mind map animation video of the story of Stan Gloss based on an article by understood.org. For those who are not familiar, Stan is the CEO and co-founder of BioTeam and dyslexic. He talked about his life growing up with dyslexia and how he used it to his advantage. To cut the story short, Stan saw the video and contacted us. We are so thankful that he liked the video so we asked him if he could be a guest in our podcast and continue the story we started with the video. In this episode, we have a conversation with Stan Gloss where he talked about shame and dyslexia and the power of empathy inspired by Brene Brown’s books on shame. He noticed that people don’t usually talk about dyslexia and the shame that's associated with having it. How does it impact us? Where does shame come from? And what can we do to help them deal with it? Most people just avoid talking about but he personally feels that we should have an open conversation about it.

Karen Murdarasi said she had no difficulty in reading. She was doing well at school and didn’t remember having trouble school. She remembered being called careless by her parents and teachers but she didn’t really pay attention to it. Until one teacher noticed that there’s a disparity between her performance in her oral participation and her written submissions. Being trained with identifying dyslexia in school, the teacher encouraged Karen to get assessed. That's when they found that there a lot of dyslexic traits that might be hidden but actually affect her life. Driven by the growing frustration that she didn’t have enough skills to help dyslexic children, she trained for the Level 5 specific learning difficulty teacher training course at the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Center, then became a headteacher of Moon Hall School. Sarah George had a nice conversation with Darius about her dyslexia journey, dyslexia schools particularly Moon Hall School, and the advantages of sending your child to a specialist dyslexia school rather than a public school with good learning support.

In this episode, we have a special guest. As a trainer of teachers who train other teachers, Sara Shunkwiler, a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Education and tutor of dyslexia, finds it hard to access research about dyslexia and related subjects. Even with the professor's ID, she still gets blocked on a lot of research papers in the library. Research papers that could’ve helped teachers improve teaching non-linear thinking students. That is why she made it her goal to look for research papers, distill it down and share it in digestible chunks to make it accessible to fellow teachers and parents. Steve McCue stopped going to school at age 14 because he did not think he had the academic ability. He worked different jobs and performed in festivals as a musician but at age 35 he went back to school and got identified with dyslexia. He was given a computer to work with and that helped him a lot. However, assistive technologies were pretty basic at that time and some even caused roadblocks for him. Now he is working with different kids who are struggling as a learning support specialist, he noticed that some schools see assistive technology as a panacea and neglects the emotional side of the problem.

When Evie found out she was dyslexic she cried in the car saying “I don’t want to be different. Don’t tell anybody.” Now she and her mum, Janine, sat down with Darius to share about their dyslexia story. I want to share with you a cool little technique that helps children with dyslexia learn things faster. We use it a lot with the children that we tutor. It's a variation of the Feynman technique. In this live recording of the podcast, you'll get a preview of the explanation.
It involves 4 steps. 1) Write everything on a piece of paper, 2) Explain it out loud to an imaginary class, 3) Find the bits that get complicated and research them, and 4) Repeat until you can explain it simply.

All evidence points out that Thomas Edison might be dyslexic. We know this from the way he wrote and his struggles in his early years of reading. He was expelled from school but mother soften the blow and did everything she can to help young Thomas. We continue on with our Parent coffee time live on Facebook with parents of dyslexia. This time we talk about the tendency of students to pursue courses that lean towards their M-strengths or Material Reasoning. In our case, a lot of the BulletMap Academy students want to take up Biology as a degree. One particular student was quite pleased that she could choose Biology as a subject. However, she was discouraged when her teacher assigned them to read 10 pages of text from a book within a short span of time. This goes to show that without a strategy to deal with the huge amount of reading, a dyslexic student could be thrown off course from their dream.

His dyslexia assessor advised his parents that he couldn’t manage the state school due to his dyslexia but his parents found ways for him to adapt and learn in the state system. 14 yrs later William Stone has a first class honours from the University of Edinburgh and a distinction in his Masters degree from Oxford. When Williams dyslexia assessor advised his parents that he probably couldn’t manage state school due to his dyslexia his parents decided to do everything they could to keep him in mainstream. Hear the story of William Stone who got first class honours at the University of Edinburgh and recently got a Distinction for his Masters degree in Oxford University for Art History. He wants dyslexics to know they can definitely be academic if they want to. When he was diagnosed at 10 years. At 13, he was at the bottom of his 'sets' (Streamed classes) but something clicked at 14. It was certainly the intensive help and tutoring he was receiving. He shares how doing Karate could have had a positive effect on school too. He initially wanted to be involved in film after high school but his principal persuaded him to aim for Cambridge. He got rejected twice. Going, instead, to the University of Edinburgh and took Art History where he gained first class honours. He got his place at Oxbridge going to Oxford to do his master. What do you do when you discover your autistic child's gibberish means "Please be happy. I'm so sorry."? When a therapist records your 5-yr old child's gibberish and slows it down so much you can actually hear the words. What do you do when you realize your child is locked in their mind trying to communicate but can't? In this episode, we are going to take a little departure from our normal topic of dyslexia and talk about autism. Autism and dyslexia are different, but I just could not pass up the opportunity to speak with Stephanie and hear this story. As parents of dyslexics, although our children's challenges are different, the challenges for us as parents can be similar.
In this episode, I'd like to introduce you to Stephanie Hill, a single mom and former secondary school teacher of English and Spanish, who lives in Las Vegas Nevada. Stephanie is going to share her autism story, which is quite extreme. For example, her son has received 11000+ hours of tutoring over 12 years at a cost of over $400,000 and a large part of which Stephanie has had to find herself. This is just a small indication of the challenges faced in this story. For our regular listeners, this episode really gets to the heart of a parent'ss challenge. The parenting lessons and insights are universal to everyone who has a child with extra needs. She talks about how in the beginning he was meeting all the milestones and being responsive even beginning to speak and say 'mama' but something happened at 14 months and he started to shut down. She knew something was wrong. She lived in denial for a year, until a friend had the courage to say "maybe he needs tested for autism". She tells the story of the diagnosis at three years old and then the beginning of the treatment. Waking up to the reality that he had 100% chance of being institutionalized for the rest of his life if he didn’t get interventions.
She shares her story of how she has spent the last 12 years determined to give him the best outcome using interventions such as A.B.A. The five year process of systematically helping him gain language at the age of 8 yrs. Year after year of working through Ecolalia, gibberish, mono syllabic, scrambled syntax to the point where he gained language and was free to communicate. Stephanie shares the example of when they recording him speaking in gibberish and slowed it down so they could understand him and discovered he was saying "Please be happy. I'm so sorry." How do you process that as a parent? How do you push on with interventions? How do you find the right balance? She shares her inner struggle with this. This is a story a mum determined to help unlock her son so he can communicate and live independently. And she shares about how it’s been as a parent to deal with this. - Dealing with expectations as a parent. - Her hopes for her own life being swept away. - Dealing with the expectations and timelines of society. - Holding onto her faith that her son can get the best outcome - The rewards of the journey.

If your Scottish and involved in Dyslexia, this is one to listen to! Also, if your involved in a dyslexia group, there is a lot to learn from how Dyslexia Scotland has grown over the last 50 yrs. In this episode we explore the story of Dyslexia Scotland and all the things it can teach us about dyslexia itself and also other groups who help with dyslexia. It all began in 1968 with parent support groups and volunteers. Two main dyslexia organizations developed. The Scottish dyslexia trust, which gave grants and the other “Dyslexia in Scotland” which was about volunteer parents. Cathy explains how in 2002 Jackie Stewart the famous formula 1 racing champion, helped pull together both these organizations into one, called Dyslexia Scotland in 2004. Jackie Stewart found he was dyslexic through his teenage son being identified and is the President of Dyslexia Scotland and Vice President Of the British Dyslexia Association. Cathy explains how the biggest challenge that Dyslexia Scotland faced was how to raise the awareness and solutions to the 500,000 adults and children with dyslexia in Scotland and maintaining that wide scope. We go into depth on the huge range of different things that are available through dyslexia Scotland and also some of the interesting challenges that are unexpected with dyslexia for adults in the workplace doing driving tests and so much more.

26 "Teen Tip 1" Dyslexia is like a Ferrari not a People Carrier. These episodes are directed towards children and teenagers to help them learn how to harness their dyslexia. We will pepper the podcast with regular "Teen Tips" designed to be listened to in the car on the way to school as a discussion starter. Is Dyslexia the other end of the spectrum to Autism? Research from Dr Manuel Casanova quoted in The Dyslexic Advantage seems to point to this. Caused by how close or far our brain neurons are structured. "The brains of individuals with autism are biased toward short connections at the expense of long connections- just the opposite of dyslexia." p.41. In this summary and review of Chapter 3 of The Dyslexic Advantage by Dr Brock Eide and Dr Fernette Eide they explore two of the four theories of Dyslexia. “We are claiming that certain talents are as much a part of dyslexic processing as are the better known challenges- that the strengths and the challenges are simply two sides of the same neurological coin.” P.17 The Dyslexic Advantage. Eide 2011. Great little intro chapter where they take a Grandpa, Mum and grandchild and show how you could view their Dyslexia story so differently depending on the perspective you take. Firstly from the narrow one which most children and dyslexia is viewed through. Then through a second wider view of dyslexia. The difference is surprising. I do a quick summary of the chapter. Helen Wells shares her perspective as a Special Education Needs Coordiator in a school for 10 years. Shares her story of how she began as an art school graduate and became a primary school teacher by primarily learning on the job with a special program for teachers. How her head teacher inspired, and pushed her, into the job of SENCO in the school. Her rapid learning of the field and how she has found the key thing is managing the communications between the family and school well. How she found ways to help the child and family feel heard and understood. Her reflections on those 10 years for teachers and tutors who work with the tension of providing tailored solutions within school restrictions. Also advice to parents navigating it. She discusses the success of the Leeds Dyslexia Festival a month ago with 1000 people attending. All volunteers and 8 months of planning from a standing start! She goes on to describe how she learns so much stuff so effectively via audio and podcasts as a working mum. Her view on how note-taking is taught in schools and what it takes to learn an effective way, including her views on mindmapping and why it features in nearly every report recommendation. There’s a lovely moment when she shares her advice to her self as a teenager and as a parent. Finishing with a whole range of very useful advice for organising and planning as a dyslexic and parent of a dyslexic. Including, apps and lots of great stuff. Hope you enjoy.

"The Dyslexic Advantage" is one of the most highly recommended books on dyslexia for good reason. The team and I are going to go on a journey where we read it, map it, review it and draw out practical applications chapter by chapter, incorporating your questions and comments too. It's a treasure trove of 26 chapters packed with helpful info for parents and tutors. I’m recording this for people to listen on the go via our podcast. “Dyslexia Explored”. This is Chapter 1. My Favorite quote of the chapter: “Unlike most books on dyslexia this book (The Dyslexic Advantage) won’t focus solely on making individuals with dyslexia into better readers. 10 Dr. Paula Clarke, 4/6 Leeds Dyslexia Festival. Effective Reading approaches. Dr. Paula Clarke, Associate Professor at the University of Leeds presented " Making meaning from what we read: Effective approaches for supporting learners to understand the text." Dr Clarke explains some of the reading approach models and how they can be helpful as a framework to understand how to help people read especially Dyslexic children. Taking things further than Phonics into the realm of how we understand text within our own frames of reference. She explains her research into ways to make it all practical in the second section. Episode #9 Keynote speaker; Professor Jonathan Glazzard, Leeds Beckett University. The Impact of Dyslexia on Students’ Sense of Self. He tells the story of a School inspection sunk by Headteacher fighting for 4 Dyslexics. How a school inspection felt like from a head teachers perspective. Half of his students had strong dyslexic traits. It was unusual. The head teacher had a hard choice that echoes what a lot of parents feel. He goes onto share his study on the “Phonics reading Check” in UK. And the results of his research interviews with dyslexic teens and teachers. To celebrate International Dyslexia Week 2018 we are going to do a Leeds Dyslexia Festival 'Series'. Each day we will publish one of the main talks given at the festival. Episode #7 CEO of The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) gives the opening address and tells the story of the BDA from 1972. One of the first dyslexia associations in the world. The UK has often been at the forefront of Dyslexia awareness with the BDA leading the way. These talks have universal appeal. The festival had 600 adults and 100 children attend. Lee shares her story as a teacher who discovered the impact of dyslexia the hard way, through her child. She tells her story of how she started as the accommodating mum, then became a 'bossy parent', found breakthrough with phonics in Newcastle Australia, then brought it to Sydney and now runs a service from a medical practice helping 60-70 children a week to read and deal with dyslexia in school.

Maggie Hunt tells her story on the podcast this week. Her teachers thought she 'cant be dyslexic' because she was doing well at school and had good reading and writing. She tells an interesting story of how her Dyslexia didn't really start tripping her up until the exams, and it wasn't until she had enrolled in Languages and History at University that her tutors helped her identify her Dyslexia. "Dyslexia Stories" is here to encourage parents through the turbulent teenage years. Launching August 2018. In June/July we will be recording many people from all walks of life sharing their Dyslexia story. Dentists, Artists, Teachers, Tutors, Business people, Parents, Assessors, Oil Riggers, Jewellers etc. All sorts, with a whole range of Dyslexia, some identified and some self identified. We will ask them what it was like through early school, High school and how they found their path to where they are now. What lessons they learnt and what advice they would give their teenage self.
