When I was binge eating, it wasn’t that I didn’t want to feel my feelings—I just didn’t know how to be with them without getting swallowed whole. Every time I tried, it felt like too much. And every time it felt like too much, the bingeing swept in to help.
In this episode, we explore what happens when you don’t pressure yourself to sit in your feelings forever, but instead take just a small dip. Not a deep dive. Not a cannonball. Just a moment to be with what’s present—before coming back up for air.
We can have parts of ourselves that get spooked by the prospect of feeling. Sometimes these parts have been trying to keep us steady and able to get through the day. Often, these parts are told to just “feel it and move on.” Sometimes this confrontation works. But other times it creates overwhelm or additional difficult emotions, and the bingeing steps in to cool things down. There’s another way. Listen to Episode 84 to learn more.

When I was binge eating, what was missing from my life wasn’t just freedom from bingeing—it was freedom itself. The kind of freedom you feel when you laugh with a friend at a café, walk with a neighbor in a park, or lose yourself—even for ten minutes—in a book that isn’t trying to improve you.
In this episode, we explore what happens when you gently invite pleasure back into your life—not as a reward for good behavior, but as a birthright.
Because bingeing isn’t always about food. Sometimes it’s a part of you trying to break up the grind, bring back some joy, or create a moment that feels like it’s actually yours.
If you're tired of being told to push harder or restrict more, listen in. This isn’t about more discipline. It’s about less pressure. It’s about giving your parts something they’ve been longing for: a little fun, just because.

You know those days when you’re running on fumes, your inbox feels like it’s breeding, and the idea of moving your body feels about as appealing as ironing doilies in a heatwave?
Yeah—those days.
In this episode, we’ll talk about why getting more sleep, moving in ways you actually enjoy, and easing even one tiny source of stress can quietly start to change your relationship with bingeing.
No food rules. No shame. Just small shifts that respect where you are—and the parts of you that are trying so hard to help.

When I say, “Aretha Franklin,” what’s the first thing you want to belt out?
If it’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T, that’s you and me both, my friend. And, don’t worry, I won’t hold it against you if it wasn’t.
As one of my Internal Family Systems consultants, Robert Falconer, reminded me, respect is the opposite of shame and the minimum of love. The second of those ideas, he said, came from the work of Pia Melody, renowned author on recovery from addictions.
Shame is such an inherent part of the bingeing experience that it’s built right into the clinical criteria for binge eating disorder. But regarding yourself with respect and care changes the game completely. Listen in to find out more!

Every time I promised myself I'd quit bingeing, my first instinct was to trade carrot cake for carrot sticks and run so hard I'd practically slide off the treadmill. But no matter how dedicated I was to so-called “clean eating” and marathon gym sessions, the binges always came back.
Here’s what I missed back then: There are key things you can do—things that have nothing to do with counting carbs or surviving bootcamp—things that can markedly shift bingeing. Counterintuitive as this is, focusing away from restricting and working out often yields a desire to eat and move in ways that serve us—body, mind, and soul.
In all, I’ll been talking about 10 important pieces to understand, and this episode focuses on understanding how your bingeing makes sense. YES, you read that right! Listen in to hear why it makes sense and why it’s so powerful to understand that it does.

“How do I deal with the urge to binge?” It’s one of the most common questions I get asked.
The experience of the urge can be incredibly tough, scary even. But you’re not alone in this. I’ve put together this episode with nine actionable steps to help you navigate those moments when the urge to binge eat feels overwhelming.
In episode 78, I share nine actionable steps to help you when you’re experiencing urges and cravings, including part of Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory. Get full show notes and more information here: https://www.holdingthespace.co/78.
And here’s the cherry on top: I’ve created a special resource called, Calm in the Crave: Your Pocket Pal When You Need It, just for you. It summarizes everything we’ll discuss here, so you can have it handy whenever you need it. Head over to https://www.holdingthespace.co/calm to download it.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably tried every diet, program or solution you could find—so many of which promised rapid results. I understand the soaring hope as you start out followed by the descent into disappointment when the bingeing returns, because I’ve been there too.
It makes sense to me that you want to stop bingeing right now—or yesterday—forever.
But what I’ve learned from my and my clients’ lives is that living from a place of urgency and pressure for immediate change often leads to exactly the result you don’t want—slower change, no change, or backward movement.

Binge eaters often wonder: Is it safe for me to hope that one day I’ll be able to stop bingeing, after doing it for this long?
I remember wondering this too. Then I’d risk it, try a new approach, and find myself uplifted with hope. Then, when the approach didn’t resolve my bingeing, I’d find myself dropped back into hopelessness, believing once again that freedom was impossible, a place where hope seemed a world away.
Luckily hope isn’t the only thing that can inspire healing. There’s power in holding on to the possibility of healing, rather than clinging to the hope of healing.
Listen in to episode 76 as I talk about how focusing on the plains of possibility offers some respite from the rollercoaster ride of hopefulness and hopelessness. Get full show notes and more information here: https://www.holdingthespace.co/76.

Depending on where you live, you may be about a month into summer. The summer is fraught with exposure stress for many binge eaters. With more heat comes more beach trips, more pool parties, more shorts, shorter sleeves, higher skirts, undershirts, camisoles, Speedos, and bikinis.
With more flesh to be seen, the spring often brings on a deluge of summer pressure, preparations, and promises. At this point in June, those aspirations may be going swimmingly well or drowning in disappointment. If it’s the latter, or if you want to set a new goal right now, this episode is for you—it’s all about setting intensions, based on the work of Chris Burris, an Internal Family Systems lead trainer and author.

Guilt and shame aren’t the same. And it turns out that it pays to understand how they differ and what their relationship is with binge eating.
This episode explains the difference between guilt and shame, why we feel these emotions, and what they often lead us to do. When enough compassion is present, it’s possible to see how our parts that feel guilt and shame interact with harshly critical parts of us that can inflame these emotions, and with a binge eating part that tries to ease the pain and return harmony.

On my road to recovery, I sometimes didn’t binge for weeks or months. And sometimes all it took to slide back into bingeing was a holiday meal—a slide that could glide on for even more weeks or months. As it turned out, I’d rock like this . . . forward, backward, forward, backward . . . for decades.
This episode is about how sometimes our bingeing can worsen or come back during the holidays, even when we’re celebrating with those we love. If there’s lingering guilt or shame about this, we can feel isolated and reluctant to reach out for help.

This time of year, Ramadan, Passover, and Easter are celebrations that honor what we believe, who we are, and whom we love. There are open hearts and open homes. Whether it’s sharing a tradition, a meal, or a hunt for special eggs, there are many opportunities to nourish ourselves and our relationships.
The promise of renewal is everywhere. And so is food. Food could be right in front of us at a meal or circling in our minds as we wait for a meal. Either way, holidays like these can be both beautiful and challenging. If this sounds like you and you’d like some help to avoid bingeing over the holidays, you're not alone. Episode 72 is for you! In this episode, we briefly review the food feedback loop and take a closer look at pain and desire feedback loops.
If we fear a painful experience enough to escape it with food, our brains note that and determine that the pain is a threat. The more we try to muffle the pain with truffles, the more threatening the pain becomes. We shrink and the pain looms. And when the pain comes again, we’re already laced up and ready to race.
To not live to our full potential is to be alone inside ourselves, to lose hope in possibility, to watch dreams wash away. As Nelson Mandela once said, “There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
Remember Captain Marvel from back in the day when he used to wear red tights with a gold lightning streak across his chest? Well, he just yelled, “Shazam! We have our positive feedback loop.”

Sometimes it starts like this: We have food that’s concentrated in some way—maybe it’s extra savory, extra crunchy, extra sweet. And we have an amount in excess of what we need. Then we get more from the food beyond an ordinarily enjoyable way to nourish and sustain our bodies—we get an amplification of pleasure and fullness, a spike in energy, and a numbing of any pain that might be hanging around.
So far, so good, perhaps. But what next? When the eating stops and the effect of the food wears off, the amplified pleasure not only goes away, but we may feel a sense of withdrawal from it. The energy spike now becomes an energy drop. And the pain comes back.
Remembering that food gave us the heightened pleasure, increased energy, and escape from pain in the first place, we may go back for more. And now? Houston, we have a problem—a positive feedback loop in which the solution deepens the struggle.

Are you making resolutions, writing down goals, envisioning dreams? This can be a tough time for binge eaters because where a binge eater is on their journey is often quite far away from where they want to be. And when something is desperately wanted that feels far, far away, our instinct at New Year’s—especially with all the messaging that’s come our way—is to do an about face. For many binge eaters, that means a new diet starting January 1.
This episode is about thinking about the new year to come, grounded in an understanding of how meeting critical needs makes living our dreams so much more possible. When our needs are met, we experience a different set of emotions than when our needs are not met. So let’s focus in on well-being! When we take care of this, we feel better, and when we feel good it’s so much easier to eat the way we dream of without the 180 that often swings back to 0 a few weeks into the year.

Tis the season to be jolly, we’re told, so you know what? Let’s talk about that. Why? Because this season really can be jolly, where feelings and festivities align.
I had so many holiday seasons where I felt much love, much togetherness, and was left enthralled. Maybe you’re feeling something like that right now. This is the bliss of having our physical, social, emotional, and spirituals needs met. In this peaceful vibrancy, our feelings show it and so does our eating. Why is this important? Because when our needs aren’t met and our feelings signal that, we are far more likely to binge. Listen in to learn more!

When past binges are held in secrecy and shame, this can be a lonely ride … even when the candles of the menorah light up, day by day; even when lights on the trees twinkle, inside and out; even when carolers serenade before your door; and even as the Kwanzaa flag is draped, east-facing, across a table of honor. It’s one thing to feel alone when you are alone. It’s another thing altogether, when you’re surrounded by flickers and family, twinkles and tales, singers and song, and colors and the glory of freedom. In this episode, I take you through three steps to begin to transform the experience after a binge into something completely different. For decades, I spent this time of year feeling alone among the many, dark within the luminescence, divided amid the communion.

Sometimes, it can feel as though your connection with your inner wisdom has been lost, or blurred. Perhaps coping strategies have emerged that end up pulling you down—coping strategies like binge eating. Episode 60 considers why that may have happened. Now, the focus shifts toward re-establishing a sense of Self leadership that will guide you toward healing and freedom. This episode explores the 6 steps back to you—the you that can provide the safety and protection that you’ve been searching for. Perhaps it makes sense to you—on an intellectual level, at least—that you have the power inside to find a way out of bingeing. Why, then, might that wise inner leadership have sometimes been absent? If you feel confused, or even resentful, at not always being able to access that deeper sense of your Self, you might consider that even the president is evacuated in times of crisis. When that happens, others need to step in to fill the vacant protective role, albeit temporarily. This episode talks about why you may have lost your sense of internal leadership, and how the part of you that binges can begin to relinquish power as it rediscovers you. If you’ve ever noticed a part of you that wants to binge and another part of you that would do anything to stop, you may intuitively recognize the idea of parts. Different parts resort to different coping mechanisms—some of which might be harmful, such as binge eating. However, there is a way to lead these parts in a new direction and to heal negative behavior patterns—even those that seem deeply entrenched. This episode introduces Internal Family Systems (IFS), an evidence-based, therapeutic approach developed by renowned family therapist Dr Richard Schwartz, and talks about how it can help you heal from binge eating. Hating the binge makes perfect sense. After all, it’s probably wreaked havoc in your physical, mental and/or emotional life. But, has hating the binge helped weaken or diminish it, or does it stubbornly remain? If you’re still bingeing, it may be time for a different approach. One path toward healing is to befriend the part of you that binges—to begin to know and understand it—so that it doesn’t have to binge any more. When you start putting YOU at the top of your to-do list, others may not be so thrilled. They might be used to you dropping everything the moment they ask for you. If you’ve lived as if your needs weren’t as important as anyone else’s, you may have trained others to expect instant access to you. It may take time for them to adjust, and that’s okay. It may take time for you to adjust too. This episode talks about how to make the transition into finding balance once more.

On the one-year anniversary of The Done Bingeing Podcast, we’re talking about self-care—epic self-care, the eighth key in this special series, 12 Keys to End Binge Eating.
Part of the reason we’re talking about self-care, right on the heels of talking about hormones, is because there’s another hormone that’s important to consider in the mix. That hormone is called “cortisol”—the stress hormone. With stress as a constant threat in our lives, self-care offers a crucial antidote. Listen in to find out more!

If having high levels of insulin in your blood hijacks your hunger and fullness signaling system and blocks your ability to burn your own fat stores for fuel, it’s helpful to understand what raises insulin in the first place. That’s exactly what this episode explores more fully!

Insulin is sometimes called “the fat-storage hormone” because it’s the main hormone determining whether you gain, maintain, or lose weight. Too much insulin can interfere with the ability of leptin to signal to your brain that you’re full. If you’re bingeing, you’re eating more food then you need, so it’s important to look into how hormones regulate your hunger, regardless of whether excess weight is an issue for you. Listen to the episode to find out more about the role of insulin!

This episode takes a deeper look at the second of two key hormones central to regulating your hunger and fullness signals. If you’re bingeing, you’re eating more food then you need, so it’s important to look into how hormones regulate your hunger, regardless of whether excess weight is an issue for you. Once you balance your hormones, it’ll be easier to eat less because your brain will actually be able to decipher the signal that you genuinely aren’t hungry. That’s a very different place from trying to stop eating when your brain is telling you that you really are hungry. The first is freedom. The second is prison. Listen to the episode to find out more! If you’re bingeing, you’re eating more food then you need, so it’s important to look into how hormones regulate your hunger, regardless of whether excess weight is an issue for you. It’s hard to normalize eating if your hormones are whacked. Why? We’ve been trying to understand the desire to overeat from four perspectives: an emotional desire to overeat, a culturally conditioned desire to overeat, a neurological desire to overeat, and, now, a hormonal desire to overeat. This episode sets the stage to explore the role of hormones. Listen to the episode to find out more! When do you eat? When do you not eat? You probably wouldn’t be listening to this podcast if your answers were: “I eat when I’m hungry and I don’t eat when I’m not hungry.” Why is it that we often eat when we’re not hungry and sometimes don’t eat when we are hungry? They way we’re conditioned to eat by society may be part of the reason. Listen to the episode to find out more! Emotional eating is about eating to make a difficult emotion go away. But what if you’re contributing to that emotion being there in the first place? Say what? Oh, yeah. You read that right. I was shocked when first heard this idea too. But figuring out how we create our own negative emotions is a huge tool in your toolbox to ending your struggle with emotional eating. At the heart of the desire to overeat is emotional eating. Emotional eating is about eating to cope with a difficult emotion or eating to make that emotion go away. Emotional eating offers a distraction and an analgesic. But there’s a downside: we get good at whatever we practice. So, here’s the question: Do you want to get better at eating frosting when you’re frustrated? Or do you want to get better at feeling frustrated when you’re frustrated? Maybe you don’t want to get better at either. What then? Listen in to find out more! Reducing the desire to overeat is one of the biggest pieces that’s missing from almost all approaches to end bingeing or to lose weight. Most meal plans—even reasonable ones—are essentially about eating less food. But what if you still really want to eat the food that the program says is either too much food or not the right kind of food? Then what? Listen in to the episode to find out more! This episode continues our discussion of the sixth key to end binge eating: Welcome your urges. When you understand what’s happening in your brain when you binge, so much of the struggle begins to make sense. Part of you wants to stop bingeing so badly and part of you wants to keep bingeing just as badly. So you have that tell-tale dissonance between how you want to eat and how you actually do eat. It’s like there’s two of you playing tug-of-war. And that is fantastic news. Why? Because the two of you playing tug-of-war reflect two parts of your brain also playing tug-of-war—and those two parts of your brain are functioning exactly as they were designed to function. The problem is that they’re currently cross-wired to work against each other instead of with each other. And that, we can fix! Listen in to Part 6 of 12 Keys to End Binge Eating. You probably feel competent in many areas of your life. But you may not feel so competent, or confident, when it comes to the amount and type of food you eat, or the way you look and feel in your body. If that sounds familiar, you’re going to love what I have in store for you! I’ve created a special series on 12 essential steps to end bingeing or overeating because I felt it was time to review the foundations. (Don’t worry—we’ll return to our exploration of boundaries after this series. Today’s episode explores the first of the 12 keys to stop bingeing: You’ve got to have your own back. The last three episodes explored both the downside of having rules for others around your eating, your food, and your weight, and the upside of letting those rules go. But we were careful to acknowledge that taking responsibility for how you feel and what you do, regardless of other people’s behavior, doesn’t mean that you stay in relationships—or that you tolerate relationship dynamics—that harm you or don’t serve you well. Sometimes it’s necessary to set boundaries with other people, and that’s the focus of this episode! Listen in to find out more! We’ve spent the last two episodes exploring the drawbacks to having rules for others around your eating, your food, and your weight. It was worth it to take the time to understand how having manuals for others holds us back because on the surface they seem like a pretty good idea. So, now that we’re clear that manuals are more trouble then than they’re worth, how do you get out of the habit of writing them at all? Listen in for the 10 steps you need to take to let go of your manuals and find more freedom than you ever expected! Get full show notes and more information here: https://www.holdingthespace.co/31
We’re digging deeper into what it really means for us (and others!) when we have rules about how other people should behave around us, our eating, and our weight. Right now, for example, you might be asking others to police the way you eat. That might seem like a great idea, but it often leads to frustration and resentment for all involved. Others feel manipulated and you feel let down. This episode will help you better understand the problems with having rule books for others, so that you’ll be ready to let them go.

This episode continues the exploration of conditioned eating and focuses on staying in our power no matter what other people do with food around us. You might think that your partner shouldn’t have brought home Krispy Kreme, or your colleague should think twice before ordering in a crate of muffins for the office, or your neighbor could be a little more thoughtful about sending over cute little Chloe to sell chocolate bars for a desperately desired school trip. Well, I want to offer you another perspective on navigating the actions of other people in your life. Listen in to find out more!

One of the most deeply held beliefs preventing people from stopping at the level of fullness that feels best for them is that it’s wrong to waste food. If that’s something you believe, it’s a thought worth exploring because that thought often leads to guilt, which then leads us to eat the food we’re afraid to waste. We have so much baggage about throwing out food that we rarely stop to ponder that eating food we don’t need is just a different kind of waste. In this episode, we explore how to get to a place of peace around throwing away food. Listen to the episode to find out more!

Sometimes feeling full, satisfied even, can feel scary. If that’s you, you may reside in a half-starved state at or close to your goal weight but with a different kind of misery. Or, you may sprint from starved to stuffed, then slide back down to start the cycle again. Part of your work may be to edge up the hunger–fullness scale until you find a level of satisfaction or fullness that works better for you. This process can begin with asking what emotion you’d need to feel to allow yourself to tiptoe toward the edge of even the slightest satisfaction that comes with eating to a +1 on the fullness scale. If you’re open to looking for signs of physical hunger—and to experiencing it once it arrives—this episode will take you a little deeper. In addition to understanding how your body signals physical hunger, it’s helpful to understand how the intensity of your hunger changes over time. Using a number scale to assess hunger and fullness can help you to get in touch, and stay in touch, with physical sensations of hunger and fullness. This scale helps you determine how hungry or full you are, and to put numbers to your experience. Listen in to find out more!

Rediscovering a nourishing fullness begins with the willingness to first be empty. In other words, you need to risk hunger. With a history of bingeing or overeating or chronic dieting, hunger may be something that you no longer let yourself experience often. It can feel uncomfortable, sometimes even terrifying. If you feed yourself when you’re hungry and if you bring a mindful awareness to deconstructing the experience of hunger—to what it feels like and how it’s intensity changes—it will soon lose some of its power and become more of a neutral sensation, a simple message that it’s time to eat soon.

We eat when we’re not hungry for many reasons. With all our social conditioning to eat when we’re not hungry, it’s no wonder that many don’t have a clue what physical hunger feels like. Two of the main reasons are that we mistake psychological hunger for physiological hunger and we’re not in tune with our hunger signals. Ultimately, we want to eat when we experience physiological hunger and use other strategies when we experience psychological hunger. To achieve this, we need to know the difference between what psychological and physiological hunger feel like. Listen in to find out more! What time is it where you are right now? Is it mealtime? How do you know? So often we eat because of the time or because others are eating or because others are encouraging us to eat or because we’re afraid of what others will think of us if we don’t. Many times we eat because we see an ad or pass something that looks good or smells enticing. Sometimes we eat when we’re not hungry because we’ve been told that eating at certain times is good for us and will speed up our metabolism. Sometimes we eat because food is in front of us or because someone said we shouldn’t waste food. Sometimes we eat just by virtue of location—we’re at the movies, or the ball game, or on vacation. Sometimes we eat just by virtue of location—we’re at the movies, or the ball game, or on vacation. Sometimes we eat because of the day of the week—Wednesday is Wing Night and Friday is Pizza Night. Sometimes we eat because the season or occasion—it’s a special holiday or celebration, or it’s a summer treat or a winter tradition. Sometimes we eat because something’s on special at the checkout or caught our eye down the aisle. Sometimes it’s because someone you love and who loves you baked something fresh. Sometimes we eat as a form of rebellion for all the times we’ve been told we can’t. What to do? Listen to the episode to find out!

It’s showtime. And you’re ready. You’ve been practicing your script—the list of thoughts that describe who you truly are and who you truly want to be. Now, I want you to live as the person you want to become. We live like everything depends on our past. But, what if, you lived like everything depends on your future? What if you lived your script? What if you lived your new thoughts, like “Others have stopped bingeing and I can too.” Or, “I am becoming a woman who is willing to feel emotions.” Pulling away from the drive-thru, leaving your order behind, your money spent on something you no longer want, is possible when you begin to live your future, powerful reality right now. You’ve written your script—the list of thoughts that describe who you truly are and who you truly want to be. Showtime is coming. The set is being built. The props are being purchased. The lights are being hung. Auditions are underway for the supporting actors. And you just got the rehearsal schedule: you’re due to practice every day, at least twice. You want to know your lines inside out so that you can live your character, not robotically, but seamlessly. It’s easy to recite your lines to the mirror, holding your script in front of you in the privacy of your own dressing room. It’s another to do it on stage in full make-up and costume, with the crowd watching, the lights blinding, and the pressure building. And that’s why you’re practicing your thoughts. So that the next time you pass the corner bakery with the tiramisu that you swear calls you by name, you’ll be ready. The next time you come home from work exhausted and restless, bored and lonely, you’ll be ready. Get full show notes and more information here: https://www.holdingthespace.co/20
With a sense of the actions you need to take to create a life free from bingeing and full of living, we need to fuel those actions with the emotions that will inspire you to take them. How do we do that? With your thoughts. This episode is a deep dive into new thoughts to shift your focus from taking in food to taking in life. We know what you want to leave behind. And we know where you want to go. Now, let’s get you there. Listen in for more details!
I want you to look beyond the end of your bingeing. Why? Because bingeing or overeating may have become an all-consuming drain on your life, a central focus, perhaps even an identity. When it’s gone, there may be a hole in its wake. And what then? What will you do and who will you be? A hole that remains after you stop bingeing may have contributed to why you started bingeing in the first place. Start thinking about what will replace this focus in your life so that you don’t fill that hole with another pattern that keeps you spinning in a groove you don’t want to be in. How can you fulfill that empty part of your life so that you don’t just plug it up with a different behavior or a different substance with its own net-negative result? Listen to the episode to find out more!
Everything you create in your life is an indication of your power. Your thoughts cascade into the results you have in your life. And that is amazing news. Why? Because you can choose the thoughts you want to think. So, in this episode, we’re breaking down how to think deliberately into four manageable steps: finding out what you’re currently thinking, evaluating whether those thoughts are serving you, choosing new thoughts that will serve you (if necessary), and practicing your new thoughts (which is the topic of Episode 19). Listen in for the details!
Our brain is the most powerful asset we have. Yet, left unattended, it will lead us down the path of least resistance, down a well-laid trail. Why? Because it’s easier and more efficient. So . . . what to do? Think deliberately! The ability to be aware of your thoughts and to think certain thoughts on purpose is the privilege of being human. If you’re bingeing, compulsively eating, emotionally eating, or overeating in any way, a significant portion of your eating pattern is unconscious. It’s the way overeating in any form thrives. We may not even know what we’re thinking—or if we’re thinking at all—before or during episodes of overeating. Becoming conscious of those thoughts, learning how they undermine us, and choosing thoughts that better serve us is key to ending overeating. Listen to the episode to find out more!
There’s nothing more important than how we feel when it comes to getting what we want and need. Why? Because feelings are the reason why we do everything we do. They are the reasons why we make the choices we do around our eating. In fact, feelings are so central to eating that emotional management is a must if you want to reach the goals you have for your eating and your weight. You are one feeling away from shifting your eating and weight loss toward where you want them to be. Find out how to create that feeling by listening to the episode!
We began looking closely at emotions in Episode 12 in a conversation about how to lose weight after being a binge eater without triggering any more binges. In that episode, we started to study why we have the desire to overeat in the first place. To understand question, we needed to understand the three main reasons why we have the desire to overeat: 1. we use food to anesthetize painful emotions, 2. we’re conditioned to overeat by society, and 3. our dopamine system gets hijacked by high-sugar foods. So, since then, we’ve been exploring emotional eating and taking a deep dive into emotions—understanding them, choosing whether to eat them or feel them, and now we’re on to creating them.
Many of us are so detached from our emotions that we can’t even name them. In fact, most people don’t know the difference between really feeling an emotion and resisting, reacting to, or avoiding one. Truly feeling an emotion can be done sitting on a chair and experiencing sensations in your body without taking any action at all. Listen in to Episode 15 to find out how! Episode 12 began the discussion of losing weight—without triggering more binges. And, in that episode, we started to explore why we have the desire to overeat in the first place. To understand that, we needed to dig into the three main reasons why we have the desire to overeat: 1. we use food to anesthetize painful emotions, 2. we’re conditioned to overeat by society, and 3. our dopamine system gets hijacked by high-sugar foods. Episode 13 started the examination of how we use food to deaden uncomfortable feelings. Episode 14 went even deeper by differentiating between eating a feeling and feeling a feeling. Now, in Episode 15, we take time to understand feelings even more deeply.
Sometimes feelings suck. Especially when you don’t want to feel them. One of the main reasons we have the desire to overeat is that overeating is an effective—though temporary—pain killer of feelings we don’t want to feel. The fact that it has the effect of doing what we want it to do—numb painful emotions—even for a short time is what keeps reinforcing its use as an analgesic. Episode 14 drills down even further into emotional eating.
In this episode, we continue the discussion we began in Episode 3 about using self-regard as your key ally to end your binges. Self-regard can help you deal with your unhappiness with your weight, the temptation to diet to lose that weight and control your eating, your urges to binge, the bingeing itself, and weight loss after you stop bingeing.
We have the desire to overeat for three main reasons: 1. because we use food to anesthetize painful emotions, 2. because of how we’re conditioned to eat by society, and 3. because of how our dopamine system is hijacked by high-sugar foods.
You can begin to unlearn that desire by understanding how we use food to deaden uncomfortable feelings, how we’re conditioned to overeat, and how the neurotransmitter dopamine works. We’re going to take these one at a time. Episode 13 tackles how we use food to escape emotions.
Losing weight after being a binge eater—without triggering more binges—can be tricky, which is why most approaches will barely touch the topic. I’ve left this issue to the end in this series on self-regard because without a solid foundation, any weight loss information I offer just risks being rehashed into another hysteria-driven, hate-based dieting mentality. I’m done with that, and I hope you are too. When we focus on losing weight, we’re just treating the symptom—the tip of the iceberg, the part of the problem that we can see. We’re not addressing what lies below, the bulk of the problem that we can’t see. We have to dive beneath the surface to find the underlying causes of being overweight. One of the biggest culprits is the desire to overeat—and that’s what Episode 12 is all about!
In this episode, we continue the discussion we began in Episode 3 about using self-regard as your key ally as you end your binges. Self-regard can help you deal with your unhappiness with your weight, the temptation to diet to lose that weight and control your eating, your urges to binge, the bingeing itself, and weight loss after you stop bingeing.
You’ve binged. Again. And you’re tempted to run from that reality. I know the feeling. But I’ve got a better idea. Something happens when we run: everything goes by in a blur. And what can you see in a blur? Not much. Some unidentifiable streaks perhaps. And this is exactly where bingeing thrives. In the blur, in the streaks. In the unwillingness or inability to see, to be aware, and to be conscious. In the unwillingness or inability to stay still. But you can see so much better in the stillness. It isn’t as scary as you think. You can be still after the binge. And I can help.
Episode 11 continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about how self-regard should be your key ally as you end your binges. Self-regard can help you deal with your unhappiness with your weight, the temptation to diet to lose that weight and control your eating, your urges to binge, and the bingeing itself. The next episode will cover how self-regard can help you lose weight after you stop bingeing.
You want the binges to end right away. I get it. Try to be patient with yourself. This process can take time, and you’re well on your way. Let’s talk about what to do if you’re not yet able to defuse and bypass your urges to binge. I can’t let you off the hook here! Yes, you’ve guessed it . . . you’ve got to binge with self-regard—that form of deep, unconditional love for yourself that we’ve been talking so much about. Why? Because self-regard lets you be a neutral witness of the binge, which, in turn, allows the binge to serve as a step toward new neural wiring instead of just another loop through the old neural groove.
It often seems like there’s so much to get upset over when we binge. There’s the amount of food we eat, the kind of food we eat, the lightning speed at which we eat it, and the unnerving disconnect between how we want to eat and how we actually do eat. But I want you to stay calm and be kind to yourself during the binge by following three simple steps. Listen in to find out more!
Episode 10 explores why deliberately planning and savoring your binge will help you so much more than racing through it with your eyes closed because you hate what you’re doing. This episode continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about how self-regard can be a key ally in helping you end your binges. Episode 4 focused on weight, Episode 5 looked at dieting. Episodes 6 to 8 tackled the urges to binge. Last week, Episode 9 explored why—counter-intuitively—it may be better to love your bingeing than to hate it. The following episodes will cover the post-binge blues and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped.
Loving the fact that you binge may seem like the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard. But before you unsubscribe, let me ask you this: When you binge, do you think things like, “This is disgusting,” “I must be broken to eat like this,” “I hate that I can’t stop myself,” or “No one can find out that I do this”? If so, do these thoughts make you feel ashamed, resigned, sad, powerless, and scared? And if so, does that prime you for yet another binge? Many binge eaters experience this cycle almost to the T. One more question: What’s the up-side?
Episode 9 explores why it seems to make sense to hate our bingeing, but how—counter-intuitively—it may actually be better to love it. This episode continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about how self-regard can be a key ally in helping you end your binges. Episode 4 focused on weight, Episode 5 looked at dieting. Episodes 6 to 8 tackled the urges to binge. The following episodes will cover the aftermath of bingeing and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped.
Welcoming your next urge to binge may sound off-the-wall, but it can be just what you need to set you free from your bingeing. Being afraid of your urges isn’t freedom. It’s prison. And you don’t need to be afraid of them anyway. Freedom is when you’re willing to allow an urge—to open the door to it, welcome it in, and actually look forward to its next visit. When you can stay neutral about your urges in just this way, you weaken the old, outdated neural connection anchoring your bingeing. So, in a way, your urges are actually just what you need to heal. If you’re scratching your head, or if this sounds impossible, listen to the episode to find out why it may be easier than you think!
Episode 8 continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about how self-regard will get you a whole lot closer to ending your binges than shame will. Episode 4 focused on weight, Episode 5 looked at dieting. Episodes 6 and 7 began exploring the urges to binge. The following episodes will cover the bingeing itself, the aftermath of bingeing, and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped.
The last thing you want to do is hang around with the urge to binge, right? There’s no doubt that your urge is super-compelling. But there’s also no doubt that your prefrontal cortex is super-powerful. Armed with the brain science we covered in the last episode, you can learn how to defuse the urge to binge by witnessing it. And nothing defuses your urges like compassionate curiosity—you’ve got it, a form of self-regard!
Episode 7 teaches you how to track what’s happening for you during an urge and how to disengage from any drama with the technique called the “Behind-the-Scenes Movie Trick.” You’ll learn that you don’t have to binge to make the urge go away. You’ll also learn that you have two powerful allies with you on your journey to end binge eating. Listen in to find out more.
This episode continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about how self-regard will get you a whole lot closer to ending your binges. Episode 4 focused on weight, Episode 5 looked at dieting. Episode 6 began to tackle the urges to binge. The following weeks will continue to discuss the urge to binge and will also cover the bingeing itself, the aftermath of bingeing, and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped.
Binge eaters feel a strong disconnect between how they want to eat and how they actually do eat. It can feel incredibly disempowering to feel like you’re eating against your will. This episode uncovers the reason for that dissonance and begins to explore what to do about it.
In Episode 6, I’m going to invite you to reconsider a deep-seated belief—that your urges to binge are beyond your control, that they’re absolutely overpowering. The good news? They aren’t all that. We’re going to dissect your brain and take a good look at what’s really going on up there. (Don’t worry. This won’t hurt a bit!)
This episode continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about the cost of shame and about how self-regard will get you so much closer to resolving your bingeing. Episode 4 focused on weight, Episode 5 looked at dieting. This week, we’re tackling the urges to binge! The following weeks will discuss the urge to binge in more depth and will also cover the bingeing itself, the aftermath of bingeing, and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped.
Binge eaters often resort to dieting as a way to lose weight or to control their eating. But dieting is also often a precursor to binge eating. In other words, dieting can trigger the onset of bingeing and dieting can be the go-to once the bingeing has started. The result? A vicious cycle of dieting, bingeing, and more dieting.
In Episode 5, you’ll find out why simply eating enough food may be all you need to stop bingeing. And, of course, we’re going to tackle your greatest fear about tossing the diets—gaining weight.
This episode continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about the cost of shame and about how self-regard will get you much closer to resolving your bingeing! Last week, we focused on weight. This week, we’ve got diets in our sights! The following weeks will cover urges to binge, the bingeing itself, the aftermath of bingeing, and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped.
When you see the number on the scale, or on the measuring tape, or on a clothing tag, what do you make that number mean? And why should you care about the meaning you ascribe to that number?
In Episode 4, you’ll find out why how you think and feel about your weight really matters—and how to make your attitude about your weight work in your favor.
This episode continues the conversation we began in Episode 3 about the price you pay when you feel shame about your bingeing. Remember, self-regard is central to freeing you from bingeing!
So, this week, and for the next few weeks, we’ll be breaking this down and looking at how we can use self-regard to help in key areas of binge eating: weight, food restriction, urges to binge, the bingeing itself, the aftermath of bingeing, and weight loss after the bingeing has stopped. Up first: weight. Listen in and find out more!
In Episode 3, I explore the toll that shame takes on binge eaters, and about why it’s worth it to let it go. One of the best ways to rout out shame is to shine a light on it and talk about what we’ve kept hidden—without apology. Stay tuned for some dirt on a cake, a garbage can, and a bottle of dish soap! I’ll talk about self-regard as a better choice for ending binge eating—plus, it just feels way better!
In this episode, I’ll also start to unravel what’s going on in your brain when you binge and how self-regard can help your brain wire a new neural pathway away from bingeing.
This episode is about where you and I meet. If you’d really like to get the most out of this podcast, I’m going to ask you to come prepared to give your all, as I’ll give mine. That’s how you’ll best be able to apply the concepts, tools, and strategies that I’ll be teaching.
This episode covers where many binge eaters are in their journey, where they want to be, and how they can get from here to there.
It’s important to talk about the journey of other binge eaters because shame often means that we binge and suffer in silence. When we don’t talk about it, we don’t realize that we are like so many other lovely, perfectly imperfect humans who also struggle with bingeing. Talking about it opens up space to wriggle free from the shame. That in itself makes the journey to healing so much easier.
So we’re going to dive in to what happens when an urge to binge strikes—and it often does feel like being struck! We’re going to explore what’s probably holding you back from stopping your bingeing, and how coaching can help you turn it all around.
I’m going to lay out what I stand for as a coach committed to helping people stop bingeing. And then I’m going to ask you what you stand for and what you’re committed to. You need to know. This work will require you to show up . . . with all of you and without apology.
I’m all in.
Are you?
