Covenant Church
The love that I have for my brother in Christ is an assurance of my salvation (1 John 2:7-11 - 3/3 sermon). If I am a child of God, love will manifest itself in action (1 John 3:11-18 - 5/26 sermon). We can’t generate Christ-like love through our efforts, we must daily connect to the source of all love - God himself. Because God is love (v. 9).
If we are children of God, abiding in Christ and waiting expectantly for his return, we will have no reason to be ashamed or shrink back from his presence when he returns. Instead, we will be filled with confidence and anticipation at his coming.
John reminds his fellow believers that they must test the spirits that they are listening to and see if they come from God. If they deny the incarnation they are from the enemy. Although there is an enemy, we don’t need to be afraid because we have someone greater on our side: the Holy Spirit.

Our love for one another is a duty and a test. It’s a duty that we’re commanded as christians to practice love. It’a test in that our practice of love for one another demonstrates the reality of our Christian faith. John is telling us that the command to love one another isn’t an optional part of our walk with Christ
John is reminding us that those adopted into the family of God will not be comfortable in this world. Children of God should be uncomfortable in this sinful world, and often reminded that sin is a serious affront to God and contrary to the life of a child of God.
Believers in Jesus Christ have no need to fear deception if we are relying on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God for our doctrine and practice.
Gambling and investing are two fundamentally different things, even if both involve an element of risk. Although there is no clear teaching that gambling is a sin, it can be sinful to participate in it. We must allow the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding of what it means to love our brother and to be good stewards of what He’s given us.
We have are given free will and are responsible before a holy God for our decision to sin. But, God in His great love reaches out to us, and offers us a chance to repent and believe and he chooses to save us.
We want to be a church that is addressing the challenges and issues that people within our church are facing. We are soliciting questions from the congregation that we will make an attempt to address from a Biblical perspective.
Revelation is a prophetic, apocalyptic, letter to the 7 churches in Asia about the end of days. It is meant to instill courage and confidence and serve as a warning, while reminding believers that God is ultimately in control of all events.
The world, as John defines it, are the thoughts and practices of a world system in opposition to God. Don’t fall in love with the world because that love pushes out our love for God. The world system is dying and temporary but when we invest in our relationship with God we invest in what will last.
John 3:16 is God’s love letter to a people in a world in rebellion against him. Anyone who calls on the name of Jesus can have their sins forgiven and receive eternal life.
Be on guard against false teachers and live with urgency now. Abide in the truth of Jesus Christ and the knowledge you have of Him, by His Word, through the power of the Holy Spirit. As you seek Him, you will be led to deeper worship of Him.

People are leaving the faith, and some are teaching a new gospel. How can someone be assured of their own salvation?
Sin is a serious problem, both in the world, but also in the life of the believer. If you struggle with sin, don’t despair! Jesus is your advocate. When you accept what Jesus has done in forgiving your sin, your response should be to spread that good news to others.
God is life, light and perfection. In him is no darkness. If we claim fellowship with God while walking in sin, we walk in the darkness and not the light of God.
Jesus, preexistent from the beginning, is the creator and eternal life giver. John the apostle met him, knew him, lived with him, listened to his teaching and now testifies and proclaims that Jesus was God - and all can have a relationship with God.
Whether we are the Pharisee or the tax collector in this story, we are in desperate need of God’s grace and mercy. There is forgiveness and mercy for even the worst of sinners but we must be willing to acknowledge that need and repent.
God desires for you to get involved in his mission in the world. We see new aspects of God’s character and we grow in our faith when we work with and for him to accomplish his purposes. You were made for this.

Although Jesus was born in humility, the hope that had been longed for was announced in splendor to the shepherds. A light has come into the world, and hope is here.
God wants to give good gifts to his children, if they would only ask. There are many prayers that God delights in answering yes to that are recorded in Scripture. We should not feel abashed at approaching the Father and asking him to “give us success”. These have been answered in the past and God answers them still.
In a world longing for hope, it is there for any who would pay attention. From the very beginning of creation, we can see that hope has been declared to the world.
If God promises it, God will accomplish it. Just because hope is deferred does not mean that hope is denied.

We all hope. And when we despair of hope, we desire a reason for hope. God has placed eternity within our hearts, and so we hope for a day when all wrongs will be righted and all creation restored.
Throughout the history of the world and church there has always been persecution. We follow in a long line of those who choose to identify with the kingdom of heaven, so we will be misunderstood, maligned, and persecuted in this life. Welcome to Covenant Church! We live in a world where we are taught to avoid conflict, but we need to consider our responsibility as sons of God when it comes to peacemaking.
We long to see and know God as he truly is. If we are cleansed from our sins by Christ, we will pursue him from a pure heart. We will see him work in this world and see him face to face in heaven.
In the kingdom of God, there is a principle that won’t be violated: he who wants to receive mercy, must be one who shows mercy. This teaching talks about what mercy means and how we navigate showing mercy in our world.

Jesus follows the progression of thought in the intro to his sermon on the mount. First, he talks about being poor in spirit and recognizing our own sinfulness. Next, he talks about mourning over that sin and receiving the comfort of forgiveness. In v. 5 Jesus shows that as a result of that recognition and repentance, we now live a life of meekness and confidence - trusting God to be our defender.
Though the believer in Jesus has now begun to recognize the depth of sin and the hopeless feeling that comes with it, this results in mourning over that sin, which will lead to the comfort of Jesus.
God desires for you to be happy, to live a blessed life. As Jesus begins what is arguably his greatest sermon (Matthew 5-7) he starts by talking about the way to enter into that kingdom life. Jesus tells his followers that the starting point into the kingdom of heaven is to start poor in spirit.

Since we have been offered the unmerited favor of God, we must begin to embrace this new reality. God’s house should be a house where there is a different atmosphere and reality than the world. This is a place where grace is offered and embraced freely.
God’s house is a house of radical generosity. In our world we are taught to seek out pleasure, seek out riches and accumulate things. God’s house is meant to have a different set of values where we work, plan, and save in order to be radically generous in our pursuit of the spread of the Gospel and help for those in need.
The house that God wants to build is different from the world and culture around us. In a world and culture that is tribal, our church body should be a place that is diverse culturally, economically, and generationally.

In this passage Paul continues to show how Christ has a new plan and way of living for me. This extends to how slaves relate to their masters and how masters relate to their slaves. Embedded in the whole conversation is a new understanding of our work and our reward

Paul has encouraged the Colossian believers with a message to God to put their sin to death, taking off their old “clothes” and lives tainted by sin. He now turns to what it is that they’re meant to wear instead, encouraging them to put on the love of Christ, the peace of Christ, and the Word of Christ.
In this passage Paul writes to the Colossian Christians to remind them of the deadly battle that will continue to daily be fought in their lives. They will need to put to death their sexual and social sins, on account of which God’s wrath is coming. They will need to be reminded that their old self is dead, take off those dead man’s clothes and put on the new identity purchased for us by Christ.

Paul begins to get into the meat of false teachers doctrine that is plaguing the Colossian church. He says that they don’t need to worry about what to eat or drink or what religious ceremonies and festivals to observe, they need to hold on to Christ. The false teachers claimed a higher wisdom, brought on by observing religious rules that allowed them spiritual experiences - Paul says they are not from Christ.

Paul has defined the Gospel in chapter 1 - and his role as minister. Now, he moves on to begin to talk about the dangers that he is seeing within the church. Specifically, that the church members are listening to people who are deluding them with plausible arguments and philosophical arguments - but abandoning the power of Christ as they do it.
Paul is rejoicing as he is in prison, that by the preaching of the Gospel he has been counted worthy to identify with Christ in suffering. As a minister of Christ he counts himself (and us) as mere stewards of the gifts, talents and lives that we have been given by God - responsible to God for ministering on His behalf. We, like Paul, tirelessly share and teach everyone about the mystery of the Gospel message so that they may grow.

In Jesus we see what God is really like. We can see that he is merciful, personal, and powerful. We don’t get to define God however we like - we have an image of the invisible God in Jesus Christ.
This is a hugely controversial passage in cults and false teachings. What does it mean that Jesus is the firstborn over all creation?

Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego placed their faith fully in God in opposition to their culture. As people of faith, they had enemies that hated them - causing them to be cast into a fiery furnace. God demonstrated his power by saving these men of faith, bringing glory to his name. We still have an enemy in this world. As people of faith we should expect suffering. The writer of Hebrews tells us that by faith, Rahab the prostitute was spared. She welcomed the spies of Israel. Her example of genuine faith in God is held up in both the old and new testament. Ultimately, her life shows us that God’s favor isn’t given because of what we have earned (Gentile, Prostitute) but rather as a gift.

Jesus makes it clear that there will be many who love darkness rather than light, but what does this mean exactly? What does it mean to be someone who chooses darkness over light?
John three sixteen is one of the most famous bible verses in the world, but do we truly understand the implications that are contained inside these few lines of text?
Jesus has a conversation with a religious leader describing what it means to be born again. What can we glean from this conversation? And what impact does it have on our lives today.
John gives us an inside perspective on what Christ was thinking early on in His ministry. John also gives us a strategic perspective that Christ has in understanding our hearts.
John recounts for us how Jesus made a whip and cleansed the temple of people gathering to make a profit in the temple courts. But why did Jesus go to such extremes in this case? Was there something deeper to this story that we are missing?
The disciples left all they had and immediately adopted Jesus as their rabbi because they believed Him to be the Messiah that prophecy had fortold. What compelled these men to give up everything to follow this Jesus?
Many great men and women have come before and after Jesus Christ; but what was it about HIM that separated Christ from all others?
Scripture teaches us that God became flesh and walked among us. What drove a divine and Holy God to put on human flesh and bone and walk a mile in our shoes?
It is a person, not an impersonal force that is behind all knowledge, wisdom and creation. And this person is the God Man, Jesus Christ.
In order for the church of Jesus to have real community we must be willing to take bold steps.
Why has the church of Jesus stop praying bold prayers? What would happen if we returned to a place of praying big prayers?
God has given His church a bold message of the gospel for us to proclaim across the earth.
What separates the church of Jesus from any other gathering of people is the God they worship and the Spirit that fills them.
The foundation of the church is not a dream but a truth, which is the gospel of Jesus Christ. A savior who came in boldness, spoke in boldness and left us to build His bold church.
Is there more than one way to get to God? Could it actually be possible that God only designed one way for us to get to Him?

As brothers and sisters in Christ we are to be each other’s advocates. If this is the case why is there all too often a feeding frenzy when someone fails?
We all have our own notions of who Jesus is, and what He came to this earth to do, but unless we truly allow scripture to inform us of the nature of Jesus, we will be reading our own desires into the life of Christ, thus producing a Christ of our own making with no power to save.
Jesus has an interaction with a man named Zacheus that gives us an insight into how we should treat those who may not believe like us. Have we aligned our lives and our churches in such a way that we end up pushing out the Zacheus’s or have we created a space that welcomes them home?

What we give our time to shows what we value, and what we put our heart into proves the health of our soul. Are we prioritizing our schedules according to the way of Jesus or the way of self interest?
We are in a “got to have it now” generation. We want the newest the fastest and the latest model of everything, and we need it now. But even though we have all the information in the world at our fingertips why is it that we feel more separated than ever from the relationships that matter most?
When you boil it all down, what do we get for all our rushed and hurried culture? Are we losing our souls just to make an extra dollar? The terms good and God seem to be identical. We have come to believe that what’s accepted as good must be God’s will. Generosity, humility, justice equal good. Selfishness, arrogance, cruelty equal evil. It all seems pretty straightforward right? But maybe it’s not as cut and dry as we think.
