In this week’s episode, Dr. Willy Rice teaches from John 8, John 1, and John 9, unpacking Jesus’ profound declaration that He is the light of the world.
Through these scriptures, we explore both who Jesus is and what He can do—not just as the eternal Word through whom all things were created, but as the true light who brings life to humanity. Jesus reminds us that following Him means we will never walk in darkness, because He has come to open blind eyes and deliver prisoners from spiritual dungeons.
This message challenges us to step into the light of life, holding onto the truth that no matter how empty or dark the world may seem, the true light has come and the darkness will never overcome it.

In this week’s episode, Dr. Willy Rice teaches from Luke 11 and Luke 18, unpacking Jesus’ parables on prayer and what it means to truly seek the heart of God.
Through these stories, we’re invited to approach God with boldness, clarity, expectation, and persistence—not because He is reluctant to hear us, but because He is a good Father who delights in responding to His people. Jesus reminds us that prayer is not about wearing God down, but about drawing near in faith and trust.
This message challenges us to keep praying even when answers aren’t immediate, holding onto the truth that God is working even when we don’t see it, and that He faithfully hears every cry of His people.

The Southern Baptist Convention, Pastors Conference 2026 sermon from Pastor Willy Rice.
In this powerful message from the 2026 SBC Pastors Conference, “The Bleating of the Sheep and the Tearing of the Robe,” Willy Rice examines the tragic downfall of King Saul through 1 Samuel 15:22–27 and issues a compelling call for doctrinal faithfulness. Saul’s failure was not outright apostasy, but a gradual compromise driven by pragmatism, public pressure, and a desire for success over obedience. Through the vivid imagery of the bleating sheep and Samuel’s torn robe, listeners are challenged to consider whether religious activity, ministry accomplishments, and cultural approval have replaced wholehearted submission to God’s Word.
Drawing lessons from Saul, the life of Charles Spurgeon during the Downgrade Controversy, and the current challenges facing the church, this message urges believers to value obedience over observance, faithfulness over fervency, and God’s kingdom over personal ambition.
Ultimately, it is a call for humility, courage, and steadfast commitment to biblical truth so that future generations may be able to say of us: “We kept the faith.”

In this week’s episode, Dr. David Rice takes us to Luke 15:11–32 and the parable of the prodigal son—a powerful picture of both rebellion and redemption.
Through the story of the younger and older sons, we see two different ways hearts can drift from the Father—one through reckless living, the other through self-righteousness. Yet at the center of it all stands a compassionate Father who pursues, forgives, and restores with overwhelming grace.
This message reminds us that no matter how far we’ve wandered or how long we’ve stood at a distance, the invitation is the same: to come home. And when we do, we find not rejection, but celebration—because what was lost is found.

In this week’s episode, The Unstoppable Force, Dr. Willy Rice leads us through Matthew 13:1–12 and the parable of the sower, revealing how the Kingdom of God often works in ways we don’t immediately see or understand.
At first, the Kingdom can appear unseen or even unsuccessful, as the seed falls on different kinds of hearts—hard, shallow, and distracted. Yet through it all, we’re reminded of a powerful truth: God’s Word is ultimately unstoppable. When it takes root in good soil, it produces a harvest far beyond what we can imagine.
This message challenges us to examine how we receive God’s truth—approaching it with humility and confidence, trusting that even when we don’t see immediate results, God is still at work bringing growth and transformation.

In this week’s episode, The Broken Road, Dr. Willy Rice takes us to Luke 10:25–37 and the parable of the Good Samaritan. What begins as a question—Who is my neighbor?—turns into a powerful picture of both human brokenness and unexpected compassion.
Through the story, we see the reality of the broken road—the inability of people to fully do good, to save themselves, or to rescue others. Yet in contrast, we’re shown the beauty of the blessed road, where true love is put into action. The Samaritan sees the need, steps in with compassion, and sacrificially gives to restore what was broken.
This message challenges us not just to define love, but to live it—to see others, to act with compassion, and to give of ourselves. In the end, Jesus’ call is clear: go and do the same.

In this week’s episode, Living with the End in Mind, Dr. Willy Rice takes us to Matthew 25:14–30, where Jesus shares the parable of the talents—a powerful reminder that our lives are entrusted to us with purpose and accountability.
Through this story, we’re challenged to recognize three key realities: we have been given a gift, we have been given a choice, and we have been given a warning. What we do with what God has entrusted to us matters—not just now, but for eternity.
This message calls us to live with intentionality and faithfulness today, keeping the end in mind. Because in the end, what we long to hear is shaped by how we choose to live right now.

In this week’s episode, How to Turn Your Pain into Praise, Dr. Willy Rice leads us through 1 Samuel 1:9–20, where Hannah’s story reveals how deep pain can become a place of powerful encounter with God. In the midst of heartbreak and longing, she pours out her soul before the Lord—and finds peace even before her circumstances change.
Through Hannah’s example, we’re shown a pathway for trusting God with tomorrow: bringing our honest prayers, surrendering what we hold most tightly, and choosing to praise God in the waiting. Her story reminds us that God sees, hears, and remembers—even in seasons of silence and sorrow.
This message invites us to bring our pain to God and trust Him with what comes next, believing that He is always at work—even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

In this week’s episode, Take the Next Step, Dr. Willy Rice walks us through Acts 8:26–40, where Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian official reveals how God leads, moves, and invites us into His greater story.
As Philip follows the prompting of the Spirit, we see a simple but powerful pattern unfold—listening, asking, sharing, and guiding. What begins as obedience to a quiet nudge becomes a life-changing moment, as the gospel is understood, believed, and immediately acted upon.
This message reminds us that taking the next step often requires both sensitivity to the Spirit and willingness to engage with others. God is always at work, and He invites us to join Him—one step of obedience at a time.
The question is: what step is God calling you to take today?

In this week’s episode, The Full Gospel, Dr. Willy Rice leads us through Acts 8:14–17, drawing our attention to the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. This passage reveals that the Christian life is not meant to be lived in our own strength, but through the active presence and power of God at work within us.
As the Samaritans receive the Holy Spirit, we see how God moves to fill, empower, and transform His people—bringing boldness, clarity, and a deeper awareness of His presence. Alongside this, we also see a glimpse of the people of God faithfully stepping in to pray, guide, and encourage others in their spiritual journey.
This message challenges us to consider whether we are living in that fullness—walking daily in the power of the Spirit while remaining connected to the people God uses to strengthen and support our faith.

In this week’s episode, The Shepherd and the Showman, Dr. Willy Rice takes us to Acts 8:9–13 and 18–25, where the story of Simon the sorcerer contrasts true faith with a dangerous counterfeit. While many respond genuinely to the gospel, Simon’s story reveals how easily belief can be mixed with wrong motives and misplaced desires.
Through this powerful passage, we’re challenged to examine the authenticity of our own faith—looking closely at our repentance, our motives, our agenda, and what we truly value. This message reminds us that faith is not about gaining power or recognition, but about a transformed heart that humbly receives the gift of God.
Ultimately, this episode calls us to move beyond appearances and into a deeper, genuine relationship with Christ—one marked not by performance, but by surrender and truth.

In this week’s episode, Scattered but Not Shattered, Dr. Willy Rice walks us through Acts 8:1–8, where the early church faces intense persecution—yet instead of being silenced, the gospel begins to spread even further. What seemed like disruption became divine direction, as believers carried the message of Christ wherever they were scattered.
This message reminds us that a true gospel movement requires endurance in suffering, a willingness to embrace our mission, and boldness to express the message. Even in hardship, God is at work—in us, around us, and through us—accomplishing purposes far greater than we can see.
When life feels uncertain or difficult, this episode challenges us to remain faithful, knowing that God can use even our scattering to bring about joy, transformation, and the advance of His Kingdom.

In this week’s episode, Behold the King, Dr. Willy Rice takes us to Matthew 21:1–11, where Jesus enters Jerusalem in what we now call the Triumphal Entry. As the crowds cry out “Hosanna” and lay down palm branches, one question rises above the celebration: Who is this?
This message invites us to look closely at Jesus—considering His claim as King, His courage in fulfilling His mission, and ultimately His cross. It leads us to the same moment of decision faced by the crowd that day: not just recognizing who Jesus is, but choosing what that means for us personally.
In the end, the question isn’t only Is Jesus the King?—it’s Is He my King?

Through these vivid images, He reveals the incomparable worth of God’s Kingdom—so valuable that it calls for a response of total surrender and joyful sacrifice.
This message challenges us to see the Kingdom for what it truly is and to respond with faith and repentance. It also calls the Church to live with extravagant obedience, recognizing that nothing compares to the surpassing value of knowing Christ. When we truly grasp the treasure we’ve found, giving up everything else becomes not a burden—but a joy.

This message reminds us of our current reality, our continuing mission, and our confident hope. While the enemy works to sow weeds among the wheat, the people of God are not called to clear the field but to faithfully cast the seed. And in the end, we rest in the promise that God’s Kingdom will ultimately overcome.

In this week’s episode, Kingdom Vision…Kingdom People, we turn to Matthew 6:33 and Jesus’ call to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. In a world consumed with what we will eat, wear, and achieve, Christ redirects our focus to what truly lasts—anchoring our lives in the promise of His provision.
This message explores the reality of God’s Kingdom—how it has come, is coming, and will come. From Christ’s first proclamation to the church’s bold witness and the future fulfillment of His reign, we are reminded that the Kingdom is not distant, but active and advancing.
The invitation is clear: pursue the Kingdom wholeheartedly, prioritize it daily, and trust the King completely. When we align our lives with His rule, we discover a vision that shapes us into true Kingdom people.

In this week’s episode, A Bridge to Nowhere, we turn to Genesis 11:1–9 and examine humanity’s attempt to build a tower to the heavens. What began as unity quickly became a prideful and spiritual endeavor to make a name apart from God—revealing the danger of a way that seems right but ultimately leads to ruin.
This passage contrasts the way of man reaching up with the greater truth of God coming down. While human pride builds towers, God in His grace moves toward us, making a way for true reconciliation and worship. The story invites us to abandon self-made bridges and trust the only One who truly brings us home.

In this week's message, Part 2 of our Limitless: Declare Him to the Ends of the Earth series, Calvary Church turns to Luke 5:17–32 with Pastor John Antonucci of the Church at Channelside to confront the subtle inward drift that can pull churches away from God’s mission. As Jesus teaches, we see a vivid contrast between those who sit near Him yet remain closed off, and those who recognize that His grace is meant to reach far beyond the walls around them.
This message calls us to listen closely to Jesus without turning our backs on those who need Him most. When we open our hearts and our church to the hurting and the far-from-God, we declare with our lives that the Lord still welcomes, restores, and saves.

In this episode of The Ricecast, Pastors Willy Rice and Dan Pigsley explore the complex relationship between Iran and Israel through the lens of biblical prophecy and Scripture. With rising tensions in the Middle East, many are asking what role these nations play in God’s plan and what the Bible says about Israel and its surrounding nations.
Join us as we examine key prophetic passages, including insights from Ezekiel, Daniel, and Revelation. What should Christians understand about current events in the Middle East? How should we respond spiritually and practically?
Whether you're curious about Bible prophecy, end times, or simply want a deeper understanding of how current world affairs align with Scripture, this conversation is both timely and thought-provoking.

Forgiveness will be as difficult as the pain is deep. Forgiveness often has to be worked out over time. How often must you forgive? As often as your heart remembers the hurt. You may have to make the choice over and over again until the hurt dissipates. Sometimes forgiveness must be an active choice in our mind and will, and it will take time, sometimes a long time, for our emotions to catch up. Keep practicing forgiveness until the hurt diminishes.

In Paul's writings, he referred to the message of the cross as foolishness to the Greeks (irreligious and unaware of the truth of God) and a stumbling block to the Jews (moral, religious, aware of the truth of God). The actual word for stumbling block there is our word for scandal. Paul is arguing that for Jewish people who knew about God, his righteousness, and the reality that sin must be judged, the message of the cross seemed scandalous. And now you see it. The message that someone's vile acts can be forgiven because Jesus died on the cross because someone else paid the price seems scandalous, even offensive. To others, it just seems foolish. But to those who will be saved, Paul says, it is the wisdom and power of God. If the message of the cross is true, it is good news for people who are wicked and vile, and frankly, it may be bad news for some of us.

It may seem strange to think that we could bless God. Many of us pray for God’s blessing…we even use phrases like, “God bless you,” because it is easy to understand how God blesses us. But here, David is telling himself to bless God. The Hebrew word used here, bara-kah, describes bestowing someone with special power or declaring God to be special power. David is praising God for who He is. He declares through worship the glory of God.

David has been on the run from Saul for about 10 years now. David has been fleeing behind enemy lines. If you remember Pastor Dave two weeks ago went over 1 Samuel 24, the chapter just before this one. David had an opportunity to take revenge on Saul, the wicked king who has been. David however chooses to be the better man and does not lay a hand on Saul. In chapter 26, David is going to get another opportunity to spare Saul’s life. But in between chapter 24 and 26.. Is a story in chapter 25.. A story of compromise.. Where the great future king of Israel, the man after God’s own heart.. Is tempted..

Revenge stories affect us differently. When we hear of them, we listen closely to learn whether we believe the revenge was warranted. In some cases, we sympathize with the one who exacted revenge. In others, we determine that it wasn’t “worth it.” There have been many great revenge stories in books, in movies, in history. We get to a certain point where we feel the pressure of those around us or the circumstance we find ourselves in, and it appears that the only way out is to compromise our beliefs, our convictions, or our standards even though we know in our heart of hearts it is wrong. But it’s difficult, isn’t it?
We want to keep that job or stay in that relationship or keep those friends. We’re afraid, confused, and impatient. We lack faith, courage, or security so we give in. We compromise what we know we should not compromise because we believe we have no other option. We have to be careful that we don’t fall into the trap of compromising in areas where need to stand firm.

The book of Revelation is a book for all time, not just the end of time. Its truth informs how we live today and helps us understand the battles that rage in our lives right now. But the book of Revelation is also very definitely a book about the end of time. History is moving toward a climax, and your history, your life, is moving toward a climax. You have a date to meet with God. It’s a frightening thought, but you will meet with God one day and how you think about that and how prepared you are for that determines how you live today, and it will also determine how that meeting goes.

The story of Easter is a story of hope, victory, and triumph over evil. Jesus was crucified. Jesus was buried. On Sunday morning, the tomb was empty, and Jesus was seen alive. The world is forever changed. Death is defeated, Jesus is alive, and the Kingdom of God is at hand.
But soon enough, Jesus would be gone, and life would go on. It was different, of course; the first followers of Jesus could not “un-see” what they saw, could not “un-hear” what they had heard, but life did go on. Injustice was still here. Pain was still here. War was still here. Death was still here. Easter HAD happened, but then life in some ways continued as before. And in some sense, that is where we find ourselves. We who follow Jesus believe He is alive, BUT…pain, sickness, sorrow, injustice, evil, and death. We want to celebrate today and wear fine clothes, feast with our families, and snap the pictures. We will bask in the truth, and yet just as surely as Sunday follows Friday, Monday follows Sunday.

In Chapters 16-17, the bowls of God’s wrath are poured out on the earth, and the last bowl represents God’s judgment of the world system known as Babylon. There will be pain and suffering. For a time, the people of God and the work of God will seem far weaker than totalitarian political systems. For a time, the faithful adherence to the truth will seem to be losing ground to the deceptions of popular, apostate religious systems. The opinion polls will swing in the wrong direction. The rainbow flags will fly. What's up will seem down, and what's down will seem up, and the most basic observational realities will be called into question. For a time, the False Prophet, the Antichrist, and the Dragon will seem like an unbeatable team. But, as we have seen throughout this book, things are not what they seem. There is more going on than what meets the eye. Behind the veil of what we can see, there is a spiritual battle, but the end is in sight, and the victory is certain.

As we come to Revelation 8-9, the dark clouds on the horizon grow darker. It is difficult to even read through these chapters, more difficult to preach them, and more difficult still to contemplate their occurrence. We were introduced to a scroll in Revelation 4-5 that seems to represent the purposes and plans of God. That scroll is taken by the Lamb, Jesus, the only one worthy to open the scrolls. The scroll was sealed with 7 seals, and the first 6 were opened in Chapter 6. These seals were troubles on the earth as human conflicts, wars, famine, and death swept across the pages of human history. The 5th seal was the awful reality of believers martyred because of the word of God and the testimony they had given. The 6th seal was a variety of natural catastrophes as if creation itself was coming apart. After the interlude of Chapter 7, the vision comes back to the last seal, the 7th seal. The 7th seal introduces a new group of “7’s”, 7 trumpets, and these trumpets announce an escalation in the great convulsion of good versus evil.

There is an increasing distrust of government and institutional leaders. There is a fear of encroaching totalitarianism and decreasing freedoms and liberties that would have seemed unthinkable to us a short while ago but now seem like genuine possibilities. There are fears about the economy, fears about public health, wars, and rumors of wars, and beyond all of that, there is what we all know we will face in the end; death itself and whatever lies beyond that veil. "Peace on Earth" is one of the most endearing and famous Christmas greetings. It comes from Luke 2:14 after the angelic announcement of Jesus' to the shepherds outside Bethlehem. The angels were praising God, and what they said was most commonly rendered from the KJV peace on earth goodwill to men. It has been used as a Christmas greeting, scripted on a thousand Christmas cards, and sung in countless songs. Who doesn't long for peace on earth?
And yet, despite the birth of Christ, there doesn't seem like a lot of peace on earth. We think we just happen to be here or in that job or living in that neighborhood or raising that family, rather than seeing our unique lot in life as our God given position and assignment in this very moment in time. We mostly think of God’s will as something we strive for in the future, not something we live in today.

What does it mean to be the body of Christ in this culture? A culture that is coming apart needs to see a church that is coming together. Our culture is coming apart. People seem more divided than perhaps at any time, even during the Civil War of the 1800’s. These political and sociological divisions are impacting our churches and sadly some churches seem as divided as the culture.
Stories of people leaving over racial tensions, to mask or not to mask, etc...
Unity is not about accommodating the culture, we are to stand apart and distinct from the culture. Yet our prophetic role does not look like simply assuming a role as a political sub-group in the latest political skirmishes.
What does it mean to play a prophetic role? Tony Evans, metaphor of referees...the 3rd team. How can we be that “3rd team”/ how can we stand apart from the culture to represent a better country, a more excellent way?

One of the greatest comeback stories in the entire Bible is the story of Simon Peter. Few people have every failed so miserably at a critical moment and on so grand a stage as Peter did. His boast...his failure...but everything changed when Jesus rose from the dead and Peter would learn what every one of us needs to learn, failure is not final as long as there is faith in God.

The book of Acts describes how the Spirit of God empowers, energizes and literally expands the church. The only Gentile Bible writer, Luke, who also gave us our third gospel, wrote Acts, which covers a period of about thirty years: early 30’s to early 60’s. Luke wrote in part to commend Christianity to the Roman world. He also made it clear to the Jewish people that the gospel was not their exclusive possession.

“Where is Jesus?”, is a question that, if we’re honest, just about everyone asks when they experience something like this. If you’re not a Christian, this question is a big reason why you aren’t a Christian. Where is God at in this world?
Thankfully, it’s a question that some people asked Jesus to his face in the first century. In fact, it takes us to an interaction between Jesus and two sisters who asked the same exact question that we do.

We have come through a challenging season as a country and as a church. It is time for a comeback. But the comeback we really need is not a return to normal but a return to something supernatural. We need to return to God. We need what the old folks called revival.
We find such a revival in the history of the Jewish people recorded in the book of 2 Chronicles 30. It took place under a king named Hezekiah and it describes for us a time when the people came back to God and it can show us how to find the road back home ourselves.

Nobody can tell me what to do...more than a denial of absolute truth; this fierce independence is an assertion of personal autonomy. I am my own ultimate authority and the highest good and the most admirable life is that one that is independent of outside control. I am the boss of me. The modern assumption of life is that no one has the right to tell me what to do. True happiness and real freedom come from resisting any outside control. I am the boss of me. the Bible tells us, to find true joy, the opposite is true.

The problem with living by the ethic of “whatever makes me happy” is that you will end up living a very selfish life and in the end that will not lead to great happiness. Jesus invites us to question our answers. Instead of doing whatever makes us happy, He calls us to see our great need for God and to seek God’s help. He calls us to manifest God character in our relationships with others. It is in loving God and in loving others that we find the road to true happiness.
If you are convinced that living for “whatever makes me happy“ is the way to real happiness, Jesus invites you to question your answers. He offers a different way, a better way, a way that leads to the blessed life.

Today we tackle this question:
"I've been a Christian my whole life. I made Christianity my own faith rather than my parent's faith at 12. That being said, I have been struggling with depression and severe anxiety for over a year now. I have faith that God has a plan and a purpose for me and my life, but I can't help but feel hopeless. Every day is the same and I feel as though my hope is fading. I'm holding on because God doesn't do things in our time. My question is, how do I keep my faith (or strengthen my faith) even in my doubt?"
Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)
The big question of all questions really is “How can I know God?” If one presupposes that there is a God, like the Bible describes, one who created everything that exists, who exists as an eternal all-powerful being without beginning or end, and who will in the end judge us and rule over the universes, if one presupposes any part of that, then knowing this God, having peace with this God, becomes of paramount importance. Even if one doubts some parts of those presuppositions about the reality of God, the questions themselves are vitally important until one concludes with certainty that the possibility of God does not exist. So on an Easter Sunday, when so many people gather because of their faith, it is worth pondering “How do I know for sure?” How can I know God?

**The cross is a strange symbol for a religion. It’s the symbol of death. It is the means of the most horrific executions in the ancient world. It was designed to humiliate, prolong death, and maximize pain. Our word excruciating comes from the Latin and means “out of the cross”. Why then is it the symbol of our faith? How does a symbol of humiliating defeat become a unifying symbol of hope and faith?
Many were crucified and yet we remember one. Many would-be Messiahs were crucified and most are lost to history. Yet, there is one that has redefined history and whose death would ultimately transform this symbol of death and defeat into a symbol of hope and faith. We remember this week all that happened that Passover week in Jerusalem some 2000 years ago.**

The question of authority is a valid one. Who has the authority to make a decision? Who has the authority to act on behalf of an organization? Who has the authority to write a check? But the greatest question concerning authority has to do with spiritual things. When it comes to a relationship with God, who has the authority? Do you know you are forgiven? Do you know God is your Father? Do you know you will go to heaven one day? By whose authority?
The conflict over spiritual authority reached a climax during the last week of Jesus’ life. One Sunday He had ridden into Jerusalem in a way that deliberately showed Messianic authority. Thousands had greeted Him with cheers and praises and were glad to welcome His as their Messiah. On Monday He had entered the temple, the place He once called His Father’s House, and overturned tables confronting the religious establishment and exposing their corrupt practices. By Tuesday He is back in the temple. The tables were probably reset, and business was back as normal, albeit with a few extra security guards, but none of this deterred Jesus who returned to the temple to once again confront the temple authorities and challenge the very system that had empowered them and corrupted the worship of God Himself.

In the last days before Jesus went to the cross he had journeyed south from the hill country of Galilee to the city of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the capital city of the Jewish people, the center of Jewish life and Jewish faith. It was their pilgrims came to worship and offering their sacrifices as the temple. The temple was not simply a house for worship, it was a place of sacrifice, a place of atonement, the place where heaven met earth, men encountered God, and sins found forgiveness.

Everybody loves a good comeback story. The hero is down, the champion is vanquished, and the bitter taste of defeat lingers. We are left to wonder if the victories of yesterday are gone and we are now relegated to future of hopelessness. And then...the music stirs in the background, the defeated one rises from the ashes and overcoming all odds emerges victorious again.
Comebacks remind us that today’s defeats don’t have to last. Comebacks remind us that yesterday’s victories don’t have to remain distant memories. Comebacks show us that the future belongs to God.

Setting aside the legitimate political concerns, few would debate that our nation seems as divided as anytime in our lifetimes. People have always longed for fame, the mass approval of others. If only people would love and admire us, we reason, then maybe we would really matter. If you think people were addicted to fame in the 1980’s, the last 4 years would have said, “you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
The next decades would bring us reality shows, people who were famous for being famous, the Kardashians, and social media. Today more people seem more addicted to finding their approval from others than ever before. Fame is about social validation like a performer’s hunger for applause. In our culture, there’s nothing worse than being obscure and nothing better than being famous.
According to author Gregory Jantz, people are addicted to social media because we are addicted to approval. Our sense of self-esteem is dependent upon whether or not someone likes them, so in order to feel OK about themselves, they need to know whether they are liked or not. According to one study 48% of the highest users of Facebook will go on Facebook first thing in the morning, even before they go to the bathroom. They need to see who liked their posts. So hungry are we for affirmation and approval it becomes literally the first thing we crave every day.
Which begs the question, “Whose approval do you really need?” That’s a critical question if you want to live a Life on Purpose.

The writer C.S. Lewis observed, “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance, the only thing it cannot be is moderately important.” (C.S. Lewis). And yet that is exactly what many people in our culture think about Jesus, that it is somewhat important.
As we come to final church in our “Flickering Lamps” series, we read about a church that is perilously described as lukewarm; they are neither hot nor cold. Abut this church Jesus has nothing good to say. The situation is so bleak that Jesus is seen as standing outside the door, as if he is a forgotten guest, or worse someone who has been deliberately cast out. Jesus describes them as a church with “little power. This is not a criticism of their lack of spiritual vitality. Quite the opposite, Philadelphia is one of only 2 churches that Jesus does not offer a specific word of correction to. They were of little power in the way we often think of power...influence money, or size. In comparison with the great institutions of their world, the Philadelphia church seemed to have little power. We don’t know much about the Church of Sardis itself.. Who led it or who it’s members were. Unlike the church of Ephesus we don’t have a letter written to them, or hear of the church in the book of Acts. One thing we do know is of a man named Melito of Sardis, an elder of the Church but he lived about a century later from when this letter would be given to Sardis.. Though we will come back to Melito, so Remember his name. Although we do not know much of Sardis the Church, we do know plenty about Sardis the Ancient City.. Sardis is located to the South and slightly to the East of Thyatira. Sardis was situated at the junction of five roads and was an active commercial city. At one point, Sardis had once been the capital of Lydia, a very wealthy nation, and gold was even found in the river near the city. It was was fortified on a steep cliff with perpendicular rock walls which provided a natural citadel. Thus the city was deemed impervious to attack.

We are living in a time of moral revolution. Al Mohler has outlined the three stages to a moral revolution. In stage one what was once condemned is now celebrated. In stage two, what was celebrated is now condemned. In the final stage any who refuses to celebrate is condemned.
The idea of moral revolution against God’s truth is not new, and the ideas revolutions propagate are not new. In the Garden of Eden, the evil one in the form of a serpent whispered “Has God really said?”
In a sense that is always the question: revolution or revelation. Christians believe in the revelation of God, that He has revealed Himself and ultimate truth to us. Those who resist and reject God’s revelation opt for a human revolution. Revolutions promise freedom and liberty, but which path really leads to freedom? Which way really leads to life?

The early church faced many challenges. Of course many of those came from outside forces. Religious authorities sought to suppress their message. Political powers sought to limit their influence and even used imprisonment and execution. Economic forces and social pressure were used to harass the church. When the gospel message threatened the economic order, those who had become enriched lashed out at the church. Those threats were all real and they all had an impact, but the message of the gospel spread on and could not be stopped.
The greatest threats though, came not from outside the church but within. Hypocrisy, immorality, corrupt leaders, and disunity all threatened the health of the church. A careful study of the New Testament will reveal that few threats occupied the apostles’ attention more than false teaching. Teachers would peddle a corrupt message often for personal gain, and new Christians who were not grounded in the message of the gospel were often easy targets of these unscrupulous profiteers. The greatest danger often arose from within.
Such was the case in the ancient city of Pergamum. The church in this beautiful capital city was the 3rd addressed by our Lord in the visions of Revelation. His warning to them stands as a warning to us. The danger lies within.

The Jesus movement that we call Christianity was only a few decades old, nearing the end of the first century when the old, a probably last remaining of the original disciples, John saw a vision of Jesus and a vision of things to come. Exiled on the island of Patmos John saw a vision of the glorified Jesus. He fell at His feet as thought dead. At some point though Jesus began to speak. He had something to say to the churches of the day and he dictated 7 letters to 7 churches. These letters comprise Revelation 2 and 3.
These letters address the spiritual condition and challenges of the churches, now fully into the second generation of their existence. In a sense these letters though were not just for those churches, but for all churches, not just for believers in that moment, but for believers through all time. These letters diagnose the spiritual conditions of the heart and offer correction for the problems diagnosed.

The book of Lamentations is a story of what happened and what one man felt when the darkness fell upon the Jewish people in 586 BC.
This final chapter, this final lament is more chaotic than all the others. While it has 22 verses, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet, unlike the other 4 chapters there is no acrostic, no order to the verses. Some speculate that this is a picture of the chaos the author felt. In the end he just pours out his pain in the rawest of forms.
At some level this is what grief is. It is pouring out our pain through our words and expressions. We can either bottle up the poison, or find a way to express our sorrow. These lamentations give us permission to pour out our sorrow.

In this episode, we discuss Pastor Willy's first sermon in the Lamentations series, a faith that's big enough for grief, and the importance of articulating your feelings and experiences.
Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)
There is a time to cry. Sometimes the rain clouds form, trouble overwhelms us, grief overtakes us, and sometimes, as the writer of Ecclesiastes says...there is a time to weep.
As Christians this is something we don’t often talk about. In fact sometimes we hide it. We associate our faith with joy, indeed this entire summer we taught through Philippians and discussed “Unshakeable Joy.” Joy is a by-product of our walk with God and it is not dependent on our circumstances. But the same Bible that has the book of Philippians contains the book of Lamentations, the book of weeping.

It has been a year of challenges and people are worried. The stress level in America has gone through the roof. People are worried about their health. They are worried about their family’s health. They are worried about their job. About school starting, about the economy, about the election. There seems to be no shortage of things to create worry in this difficult year of 2020. In many ways we are inclined to fear and worry. Perhaps that is why the most common command in the Bible is ”Fear not”.

This is the week. Room the crowds and applause of Palm Sunday, to the tragedy of Good Friday. The crowds dissipated, and many of those who were singing praises, were questioning everything they believed by Saturday. It’s one thing to sing with the crowds, but another thing to stand in the silence and believe in the darkness.
We are experiencing a time of suffering. It may cause some to question the goodness of God, or his power, or his promises, or even if He is even there. But there is a lesson in this week, before the victories and the glories of an Easter dawn there is the loneliness in the Garden, the agony on Mt. Calvary, and the feeling of being forsaken by God. Why is their suffering and is there any good to be gained by this?

We can rest in the assurance that the God who saved us will keep us, not because of our faithfulness but because of His, not because of our goodness but because of His grace. You may fail, but you will not fall when God has promised to keep you.
God has seen our dear church through storms before for 154 years. Through wars, financial crisis, and changing times. Though many dangers toils and snares I have already come, tis grace has brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home.

Habakkuk faced a crisis of faith. Sometimes the present doesn’t make SENSE. Sometimes the future doesn’t look BRIGHT. However, we can remember what God has done in our past. Never doubt in the darkness what God has shone you in the light.

There is a tension, a balance, as there is throughout the Bible between the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man. God’s work and our work. In these verses Jude is warnng us that we need to “build yourselves up” and “keep yourselves”. There is work for us to do.

It shouldn’t surprise us that many in our popular culture now actively mock and scoff at biblical Christianity and biblical moral truths. Some people will reject God. Each for money, sex, or pride they will reject God’s authority over their life and believe they can do whatever they want.
Those who want to leave God behind will be granted their wish. Hell is when God gives someone exactly what they want. This is where the road away from God will lead you, unless you repent.

Sin is not new. There is no “new” revolution. The sexual revolution, like all sin, is ancient. It is the ancient lie that we can reject God’s natural and moral boundaries and live free of any consequences. The ultimate issue, when it comes to staying grounded in truth or drifting away from God, is always the issue of AUTHORITY.

In the first century there were false teachers creeping into the Christian movement. Their error was so severe that it threatened to undermine and corrupt the faith of these early Christ followers. Yet in some ways their tactics are so subtle that many miss what is happening right before their very eyes.
Jude wanted to write a letter about “the salvation we share.” His hope was to write an encouraging letter reinforcing the gospel. Instead he had to issue a dire warning to wake up the church.
This letter is timely for us even today. We are to contend for the faith. We defend it. We must understand it. We must be willing to expose and confront error. We must be alert.

Jesus warned of those who say “Lord, Lord” but do not enter the kingdom of heaven. Understanding the difference between a real faith that changes and saves us and a counterfeit faith that does neither. Most Christian kids are abandoning their faith after leaving High School. Most people who reject don’t have the real things. They reject a false view of Christianity.
Can you really be a follower of Jesus if you are not following Jesus?

The power of breakthrough, suddenly what wasn’t unclear becomes clear, suddenly a problem is solved, a new discovery is made, a corner is turned. If the discovery is significant enough, a new chapter, even a new life can begin. What about spiritual breakthroughs?
Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to bring about change. He believed that if the walls could be rebuilt, the culture could be repaired and the disgrace of the defeated Israelites could be removed. Under his leadership the people were organized, the walls rebuilt and the city resettled. Some 13 years before Ezra the priest had been among those who returned to Israel. They had begun rebuilding the temple and the city then, but opposition had stymied their progress and left the people in a state of defeat and discouragement. But God was not through with them.
Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)
The greater the vision, the greater the challenge. Nothing significant was ever undertaken or accomplished without facing real difficulty. Most opposition we face is emotional or spiritual, much more than physical. While some of us may face physical harm, most of the time our enemy works to discourage us, to convince us that certain things are true that aren’t true. Remember the devil is lair. It’s what he does. A stronghold is a lie that is believed and is reinforced until we are convinced it is true
Success is falling down and getting up one more time. Nehemiah did not quit and in the end the wall was finished.

January is the season of resolutions. We joke about resolutions, but I’m actually a fan, not of empty wishes but of serious decisions and new directions. We need new directions because we all need to grow and keep moving forward. If you’re breathing you haven’t arrived yet, you’re still on a journey and the way to make real progress is to make serious decisions that translate into real change.
If you find yourself between where you are and where you want to be, what steps do you need to take to get started? Think of it like planning a journey. If you’ve ever planned a trip, taken a vacation, driven to some far and unfamiliar destination, there are several big decisions that need to be made in order to have a successful journey. The same thing is true in making changes in your life.
Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)
It's 2020, perhaps you've made a resolution for this year. How do we keep those resolutions going? More importantly, what is the key to consistently growing spiritually this year? Join Pastor Willy Rice as he discusses this, and much more.
Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)
We all need a place and a time to start over. A new direction often begins with asking the right question. The book of Nehemiah begins with a question. It was a question that sent his life in a new direction. A new beginning often starts with the right question. What if your future were just one question away? What Nehemiah found out was a big problem. Don’t hide from the problems, face them. The greatest movements of God often begin with the greatest messes of men. We have to be honest. We have to be vulnerable.
There comes a moment where you have to take a risk, a step of faith. Imagine the sheer audacity of Nehemiah’s hope...he wanted to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem, that had essentially been in ruins for a more than 100 years.

Your beliefs have eternal consequences. Jesus came so that we may be saved from the negative eternal consequence, and find life with him. Have you ever truly made a step to accept that gift?
Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)
We’ve learned that Christmas is about the God who is, about the God who loves and about the God who gives. Now we come to consider the present itself. We look at the last part of our verse so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. We often use the words belief, or faith. Perhaps the best way to translate this is to use the word trust. I receive what God offers me by trusting in Jesus. To trust in Jesus is to trust in God.

Everyone longs for love, looks for love. Love is the most powerful force in the universe. There is no other force like love that can transform a cold, selfish heart. That can turn a strong warrior into a protective father or a self-absorbed ladder climber, into a mother who makes heroics sacrifices. Love calls us to sacrifice, to give, to serve, and sometimes even to die. We long for love.
Where does such a hunger come from? Why does it exist? Why do we feel so empty without it? We long for love but do we know where to find it? How to experience it? How to keep it? What is the source of love and where can we find its truest, purest expression?

We must seek the kingdom. It isn’t enough to know about it or even believe in it, we must actively seek it. This means to intently pursue it. It means we should desire to be part of God’s kingdom but it also means that we should work to advance God’s kingdom. Instead of living for money and what material things can bring, we should orient our lives and our focus to that which is spiritual and eternal.
The promise is that you will have what you need if you trust God and put His kingdom first. And you will have more. You will find peace and strength and joy when you live for His kingdom above your own.

What worries you?
Worry doesn’t take the problems out of tomorrow it only takes the strength out of today. The only antidote to the bondage of living trapped in a materialistic blindness is to seek God’s kingdom first. What does that mean? It means to put God first. It means to live for His kingdom first. It means to prioritize the things that matter to God.
In our x150 Advance initiative we have tried as a church to ask, what would advance God’s kingdom. For us the answer has been focusing on multiplication by planting 150 churches, raising up 150 champions and rescuing 150 children. We think it represents a kingdom perspective. One week from today we will make financial gifts and financial commitments. All the talk in the world is no replacement for what we do with our money for that shows what we really believe not just what we say we believe. Are we living for this kingdom or that kingdom?

Most of us don’t get an obituary do-over, but we can think about the legacy of our life.
By now it should be clear, God has a kingdom. It is advancing on the earth and it will one day culminate when the kingdom comes on earth as it is in heaven. For now we are to orient our lives to that kingdom which is truly real, truly eternal and we are to work for the advance of that kingdom.
