Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s Homecoming performance against a passel of game Arkansas Razorbacks.Another Half of FootballAlabama suited up and took the field Saturday again, apparently, determined to only play a half of football. In recent weeks the Tide has rallied in the second half after sleepwalking through a lackluster first half. This time Alabama switched it up and took a commanding lead into half which it eagerly relinquished upon returning to play. Of the options, I do prefer the second half rally as it ends the game on a positive note but what Tide fans really want is a full 60 minute performance.

Gotta get off the field on 3rd DownWe’ve heard Saban say this again and again and again over the years. He’s not wrong. When you can consistently force opponents to punt on 4th down, you greatly reduce their odds of scoring. Of course, that’s true, which makes it all the more frustrating when the Alabama defense commits unnecessary penalties to keep an opponent’s drive alive. More frustrating still when the resurrected drive yields point.

Left Tackle Let DownAlabama’s offensive line has a problem at left tackle. The existing contributors – and there are two – are competing but the progress isn’t there yet. Further changes may be in order.

Learn from ArkansasAlabama would do well to learn the lesson Arkansas shared on Saturday. A road game in Tuscaloosa after a 4 game skid is where no one wants to be. Down big early only adds to the malaise. Most teams would quit and start looking for the next bus out of town. Instead Arkansas fought against odds, and circumstances, and a more talented team and was in position to pull of an incredible upset until time ran out. If Alabama can adopt the same level of grit, it’ll be a fun run through the rest of the docket.

Check out the podcast for more discussion on these and many other topics, and check out our Arkansas pre-game interview.

Next UpIt’s third Saturday in October time, which means the Volunteers of Tennessee are on tap. Get your cigars ready as revenge is best served with long ashes.

Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s performance in College Station against the 12th Man from Texas A&M.Hello JalenAlabama’s Jalen Milroe pulled off a performance of which many didn’t believe him capable. Setting or tying personal records across 4 critical quarterback metrics, Milroe carried the Tide to a critical victory in the race for the west.

Corners TurnedAlabama turned an important corner Saturday and proved itself yet capable of significant accomplishments during the 2023 season. Expect this squad to play with renewed confidence as a positive identity has been unmasked.

Oprah-fense LineThis one makes more sense when you listen to the show. Let’s just say everyone’s in a giving mood. Dammit.

Epic DefenseAlabama’s defense continues to rise to the occasion with an epic run of situational play in the second half in bailing out faltering offensive play and turnovers. A day for the ages.

Check out the podcast for more discussion on these and many other topics.

Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s travels to Starkville to face the Bulldogs of Mississippi State as SEC play continues.Stay on Target Red Leader FourJalen Milroe continues to develop and so too does the game planning to his special set of skills. On the day Milroe completed 88% of his passes and demonstrated his explosive running abilities while yielding no turnovers.

Offensive Line Firming UpAlabama’s offensive line recorded their best performance of the season against the Bulldogs. Solid pass protection and available running lanes with improved (but not spotless) snapping.

Run Game DedicationThe Tide ran exclusively during the first quarter and consistently throughout the remaining three. Complimentary football was on full display.

Imperfect but Steady DefenseWith play calling linebacker Deontae Lawson sidelined, the Tide defense struggled on occasion with its run fits, but on the whole managed greater pressure and forced a trio of interceptions, evening scoring the team’s first NOT (non-offensive touchdown).

Check out the podcast for more discussion on these and many other topics.

(AP Photo/Vasha Hunt)Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s turn as SEC play returns to Tuscaloosa in the form of the Ole Miss Rebels.QB1 Please Stand UpChuck Woolery has taken the candidates through their paces and the Crimson Tide brain trust has spoken. Jalen Milroe is officially Alabama’s starting quarterback and Saturday demonstrated as much. Not just Milroe’s play, which remains something of a work in progress, but Alabama’s play selection and play style.

Defense ReturnsAlabama’s stop squad again left their calling card with another outstanding performance in pacing the Tide to victory. Complimentary football is Alabama’s recipe for success this season and it finally appears both sides of the equation of starting to align.

Offensive Line ProgressingWith a quarterback selected and play style identified, the Tide’s offensive line managed to raise it’s level of play Saturday. There is still work to be done and players rotated in and out of the lineup, but the trend is now pointing in a positive direction.

Work In ProgressAlabama has not yet arrived, not by a long stretch, but Saturday demonstrated progress, unity, and promise. With a regiment of like-kind progress in a season pockmarked with uncertainty and Alabama is an October away from reclaiming a seat at the table.

Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s soggy outing in Tampa against the Bulls of South Florida.Quarterback QuandaryTyler Buchner earned the start Saturday but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. After climbing to second on the depth chart, Buch may have fallen off a cliff. Ty Simpson spelled Tyler and showed signs of life but didn’t outright win the job.

Defense TravelsAlabama’s defense set the standard nearly shutting out the Bulls enroute to lining the stat sheet with sacks, TFLs, tackles and turnovers. Much more is expected from this bunch as conference play ramps up, but no doubt the Tide defenders pace the team.

Offensive Line Provides Late SparkFor most of the day the offensive live was a source of concern for Tide fans. But with 6:24 left in the contest and Alabama nursing a 7 point lead, the line took over delivering the Tide’s longest drive (plays and TOP), on the day to ice the win.

Penalties Prove CostlySecond week in a row where Alabama penalties resulted in points coming off the scoreboard. This week a turnover was negated as well. Plenty of room for Alabama to get back to playing clean ball.

Check out the podcast for more discussion on these and many other topics.

Next UpAlabama returns home to open conference play against the Ole Miss Rebel Land Sharks. In recent seasons Ole Miss has proven a pivotal outing for the Tide and this promises to be no different.

Also pictured is Alabama offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin (56). (AP Photo/Vasha Hunt)Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s let down against the visiting Texas Longhorns. The Quarterback Competition That Wasn’tAlabama presents as a team running plays rather than orchestrating an offense. Is this a feature of the new OC or a limitation of the personnel? In is post game presser Coach Saban made a reasoned explanation for why another quarterback wasn’t given a chance but it flies in the face of an open competition extending into the season.

Lighting Fires Across the Offensive LineThe Tide’s OL swapped out 40% of its personnel after a close call in Austin against the horns in 2022. This season’s line may need the threat of a similar turnover to get the message – more is expected. Seth, get the ball up, this QB needs it more than Bryce.

No Rush PassingTry as they may, Alabama’s DL and LBs were unable to put adequate pressure on Texas’ Quinn Ewers, allowing the passer plenty of time for plays to develop. Meanwhile the front 7 was impressive in containing the Longhorn rushing attack, but this was no day for half measures.

Not So Simplified SecondarySimplify the offense they said. Make it easier for the players? What could go wrong? Shifting 2 players in the nickel to make room for the dime may play on paper but it struggled on the field Saturday. Sometimes simple just needs to mean simple.

Check out the podcast for more discussion on these and many other topics, and don’t miss the pre-game Texas Interview.

Next UpAlabama travels to Tampa for its first road game of the season and to pay off a two-for-one home and home deal with the South Florida Bulls. For the Tide it’ll be a welcomed opportunity to get back in the saddle after disappointing showing against the Horns.

Alabama Football Podcast breaks down the Tide’s exciting and question answering season opener.Jalen Milroe with the StartAt kickoff the question had shifted from whether Milroe would start to how he’d play. By the 3rd quarter, and by any reasonable metric, Jalen Milroe proved he belonged behind center with a record setting 5 touchdown performance.

Wide Receivers Find Separation, Catch BallPlagued with drops throughout Spring and Fall camps, the receiving corps were a legitimate question, bordering on concern, entering the season. During the opener Tide receivers demonstrated an ability to create separation and secure the pass. Sure, the task gets harder against improved competition, but this was a good showing.

A Day at the Beach, Tight Ends EverywhereDiscussion of the Alabama Tight Ends is brought to you by the number 12. 12 as in the Tight End heavy personnel grouping pervasive Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The Tide’s deep and diverse collection of talent at the position should be a fun show to watch throughout the season.

Defense Primed to PlayThe promise of a Kevin Steele led defense simplifying the game and allowing Alabama defenders to play faster was manifest against the MTSU Blue Raiders. The Tide defense rallied around the ball and never presented as confused over their assignments.

Efficient and EffectiveOverall, Alabama played a clean and efficient contest. Zero turnovers given with two created. Three penalties, none of the pre-snap variety. 10 of 13 3rd down conversions and 56 points scored. Of course there are always areas to improve, that’s the nature of the game, but Alabama proved impressive in its first outing of 2023.

Next UpThe hype dial cranks to 11 as the Texas Longhorns mosey into Tuscaloosa next weekend. The Horns want repay the favor after a close home loss to Alabama last season, while the Tide hopes to re-establish itself atop the college football rankings.

Welcome to our 2023 Pre Season Review. In this episode we’ll cover the defense and special teams. Also see our Offensive preview.

Below are my prep notes. Its neither a summary article or transcription but instead a collection of notes I made while preparing for the show. Much of this informed the podcast but it’ll deviate as well. Hope you enjoy and Roll Tide.

As for the Podcast team 30 day free trial, I’ve made the deal a little better. Sign up for the monthly plan and get your first 30 days free, or sign up for the annual plan and get your first 45 days free. The trial does then convert to a recurring plan but you can cancel at any time. Let me know if any questions.

Defensive LineThe single biggest position of concern for me is Defensive line. I like the names and potential at the position, but there’s only 2 guys with a dependable track record and one is coming back from injury. And this at a position where strength is defined by rotation and dependable numbers.

Meanwhile, I’ve seen where others suggest this could be a strength of the defense. I root for you brother, but show me.

End – Justin Eboigbe / Jah-Marien Latham

Nose – Jahiem Oatis / Tim Keenan or James Smith

End – Tim Smith / Damon Payne

But the pool of available players is deep.

Khurtiss Perry Monkell Goodwine Anquin Barnes

Isaiah Hastings Hunter Osborne Jordon Renaud

Edric Hill

Its deep enough for the position to become a strength, but not proven enough for me to yet call it a strength.

Question – Is Eboigbe ready to pick up where he left off? Which prior backups are ready to step into productive roles? Who is this year’s Q, Barmore, or Byron Young? How big a deal is the loss of Boroughs?

Prediction – A healthy Eboigbe is All SEC. Early in the season the loss of Boroughs will be felt but not discussed. The demands on this unit will shift as MLB returns to form.

Outside LinebackersI saw recently where someone commented that Saban’s purchase of a $17M beach house is Florida is obscene.

No, that’s not true. It can’t be…. Because a luxury beach house in an uber exclusive neighborhood on an island off the Florida coast isn’t even the most prolific extravagance at Saban’s fingertips.

What is you ask? It’s the Tide’s outside linebacker corps and it may not be close.

I count 8 players or a 4 deep. At the top are projected AAs and the bottom of the Administrative Grouping are multiple 5 stars. In the middle are players who lit up a 5-star LT in Alabama’s spring game.

What’s clear is Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell lead the unit. Less clear is how the unit shakes out.

Dallas Turner / Jeremiah Alexander / Keon Keeley / Qua Russaw

Chris Braswell / Keanu Koht / Quandarrius Robinson / Yhonzie Pierre

Question – this may be the only position where I don’t have a legit question. You may have to go to porn hub to find this many capable players waiting in line.

Prediction – Dallas Turner is AA, Braswell is All-SEC. Keon Keeley is too good to keep off the field and presents in the Will Anderson/Dallas Turner lineage. Lots of rotations and late game pressures/sacks.

Inside LinebackersDefenses are built up the middle. This is pretty universal across sports….

  • Baseball – Catcher, Shortstop, Centerfielder
  • Basketball – Top of the key, Rim protector
  • Hockey – goalie
  • Golf – windmill in front of the clown mouth
  • Football – Nose, MLB, Safety

Middle Linebacker or Inside linebacker in Alabama’s 3-4 as been a position of weakness for the last several seasons.

I go back to 2017 before I find a legit and healthy 2 deep and even it had questions.

Seniors Sean Dion Hamilton and Rashaan Evans backed by So Mack Wilson and Fr Dylan Moses

  • 19 Dylan Moses and Christian Harris
  • 20 Dylan Moses and Christian Harris
  • 21 Too Too Christian Harris
  • 22 Too Too and (finally) Deontae Lawson

For years Alabama’s defense was DL and LB building a wall against the run. Redeploying the OLBs for pass rush and a diminished group at ILBs has contributed to the erosion we’ve all observed from Alabama’s defense.

Saban agrees…. Right? Jaylen Moody while under deployed was granted a 6th year and To’o To’o himself was a transfer, though undersized. This year Alabama accepted GA transfer Trezman Marshall and recruited JUCO Justin Jefferson. Both with the design of escalating competition and urgency (not to mention depth) across the unit.

So how does it project.

Deontae Lawson / Trezman Marshall / Shawn Murphy / Ian Jackson

Jihaad Campbell / Justin Jefferson / Kendrick Blackshire

Question – How does the rotation shake out? Trez heaviest/JJ lightest+fastest? Does an improved ILB corps represent a force multiplier for the Alabama Defense? Who will be the first to say Jihaad Campbell just declared jihad against the opponent running game?

Prediction – Yes, ILB will deliver outsized benefit – bolster’s line while freeing up DBs. Deontae Lawson AA candidate, Campbell All SEC candidate. Remember To’o To’o was all over the place… he was just out – physical-ed and a wounded Moses was AA. A ‘right’ group if ILBs can be dominant. I think the Tide has it.

Defensive BacksThe Defensive backfield is an increasingly difficult position to discuss. And that’s for good reasons.

It used to be 2 cover guys and 2 box safeties. Easy.

Star (nickel) made it interesting, and the discussion centered around Corner Types vs Safety Types – think Minkah vs Vinny?

Money (dime) was once the best guy left over, who rarely played so it didn’t matter. Plus at 6 deep, it was kinda easy to draw the line.

Now with so many knobs and buttons and levers its not a topic for the faint of heart. An increased push for versatility, massive turnover, super recruiting, and a pair of unexpected post spring transfers…. Its harder than ever to find the handle on this group.

But that won’t stop us. We’re going to break it down by position and call out the key decision drivers.

Be prepared to rewind this as there are 16 names completing for 12 spots in a ‘true’ hockey shift styled 2 deep. Some players we’ll mention more than once as they are legit competitors at more than 1 position.

Let’s do it.

CornerbacksKool Aid / Dezz Ricks / Earl Little

Terrion Arnold / Trey Amos / Antonio Kite / Jahil Hurley

  • 3 players played corner opposite Kool Aid (Eli Ricks and Khyre Jackson), hope that’s not needed, supports Trey Amos being added.

Safeties – true Free and StrongMalichi Moore / DeVonta Smith / Brayson Hubbard

Caleb Downs / Jaylen Key / Kristian Story

  • DeVonta’s progress this fall may not have been expected, supports Jaylen Key being added.

StarMalichi Moore / Earl Little / Jaylen Key / Jake Pope

  • Chi surprise star at star during A day. Unknown here also supports Jaylen Key being added

MoneyJaylen Key / Devonta Smith / Kristian Story / Tony Mitchell

  • Kristian Story gets pushed back… Key and Smith.

Linchpin in this is 2 fold.

  • Malichi Moore’s health. Is he up to the rigor of Star? If not, he’s Safety and Earl Little is Star. If he healthy enough to play star then….
  • Can Smith or Key play safety better than Earl Little can play Star.

If Chi moves to Safety – 4 corner types on the field.

If Chi is at Star – best option on the field at Star

Questions – see linchpins

Predictions – Kool Aid is AA, top 5 draft pick, I suspect Chi will rotate between Star and Safety in Nickel and maybe Dime. Preserve Chi and simple point of confusion for opposing QB

Special TeamsAll specialists are back.

K – Will Reichard / Conner Talty

P – James Burnip / Will Reichard

PR – Kool Aid

KR – Emmanual Henderson, Ja’Corey Brooks, Jermaine Burton

Teams are all significantly improved. Coverage, Return, Kicking, and Blocking… all seeded with the abundance of RBs, WRs, LBs, DBs.

Athleticism across teams will be impressive.

Welcome to our 2023 Pre Season Review. In this episode we’ll cover the Offensive side of the ball. Also see our Defensive preview.

Below are my prep notes. Its neither a summary article or transcription but instead a collection of notes I made while preparing for the show. Much of this informed the podcast but it’ll deviate as well. Hope you enjoy and Roll Tide.

As for the Podcast team 30-day free trial, I’ve made the deal a little better. The trial does then convert to a recurring plan, but you can cancel at any time. Let me know if any questions.

QuarterbacksThe easiest position to pick is also the hardest and most nuanced. So, let’s get the clutter out of the way first.

We won’t know for certain the Alabama starting quarterback until at least the 2nd half of the Texas game. This competition carries into the season similar to 2015 and Saban wants Texas to have to prepare for two styles of QB play.

Next, let’s agree what the starting QB question really is and what it really isn’t.

It really isn’t about who takes the first snap against MTSU.

It really is about who has a Jake Coker vs Ole Miss moment in – this time – leading the Tide to a comeback victory against Texas.

Who do I really think has the moxie to win that job with that type of interview moment.

For me, that’s Tyler Buchner.

I believe this in part because he done ‘it’ before. Winning the starting job at ND and then leading the team to a bowl victory after missing most of the season.

I believe it also in part because of that Saban is telling us.

  • 4 QBs recruited after Jalen Milroe, none share his play style, 5 if you count Sayin
  • Transfer QB doesn’t share his play style
  • SEC Media days, Saban says you bring in transfers to play
  • New OC runs a modern day passing scheme

I believe the staff wanted Simpson to separate during Spring and he didn’t. Turns out the leap between 2A HS football and top end SEC is significant. Who knew?

When Ty didn’t win the job, Saban sought direct competition that could also run the offense style the staff was crafting for Simpson. So happens Rees knew a guy.

Tyler Buchner Ty Simpson

Jalen Milroe Dylan Lonergan

Eli Holstein

Question – Does Ty have it within him to rebuff a direct shot across his bow? Will Milroe consider a position change? Can Tyler Buchner stay healthy?

Prediction – 3 QBs play against MTSU, an attempt will be made for a Milroe package, Milroe will transfer after the season.

Running BacksRunning back presents as a deep and talented position. Its hard to handicap as a couple names could rise to the top. In a case like this, its wise to look to the past for guidance.

For my taste, this group feels a lot like 2018.

| Damien Harris – Sr Josh Jacobs – Jr Najee Harris – So Brian Robinson – So Jerome Ford – Fr | Jase McClellan – Sr Roydell Williams – Sr Jam Miller – So Justice Haynes – Fr Richard Young – Fr |

With 5 future NFL backs on the roster, Sr Damien Harris led the team in carries and rushing. Harris was the most steady though not the most spectacular. Jacobs and Harris fit that bill and they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively with each topping 640 yards on the season.

Now, we’re using history as a guide not a forecast. I don’t think Jase, Roydell, and Jam finish 1, 2, 3 in yardage and attempts. Saban also had no qualms giving Mark Ingram a significant role in 2008.

I’m guess the pecking order looks like this by the time leaves start hitting the ground:

Jase McClellan

Justice Haynes

Jam Miller

Roydell Williams

Richard Young

Solid argument to be made that Jase has his best football ahead of him. His play improved steadily as he got further way from his 2021 season ending injury. If he couples a return to form with his experience and tenacity. Jase will prove he’s the pride of Aledo, TX.

Justice Haynes reminding people of Mark Ingram extends beyond his wearing #22. He’ll be too good to keep off the field.

Jamarion / Jam Miller was worth staying at games well into the 4th quarter when the outcome was decided. Delivering a blend of slippery, physical, speed, I suspect Jam will be a short yardage specialist.

Roydell Williams may get the short end of the draw. He’s been a dependable short yardage back and I just gave his role away. He’s also another year removed from a 2021 season ending injury and could retain or even expand his 2022 role. My sense – for no specific reason – is that he has more working against him but I welcome being wrong.

Richard Young – I just don’t know. He’s super talented according to recruiting and summer reports. He’s also further behind that everyone having not participated in Spring drills. We simply know less about him.

Question – Is Justice Haynes everything the reports have suggested? Is Jase’s best ball ahead of him?

Prediction – Alabama will have 2 backs top 1000 yards from scrimmage.

Wide ReceiversAlabama’s wide receiver corps kinda reminds me of the ole Tennessee Ernie Ford song 16 Tons. Another day older and deeper in debt.

Alabama receivers, meanwhile, are another year older but there’s still no clear number 1 receiver.

The good news is that there’s talent available. The trick may be identifying those most ready to translate on the field so they can develop rapport and timing with the QB, another open question.

Malik Benson / Kobe Prentice

Ja’Corey Brooks / Emmanuel Henderson

Jermaine Burton / Jalen Hale

Kendrick Law / Isaiah Bond

Depth

Shazz Preston

Thaiu Jones Bell

Cole Adams

Jaren Hamilton

Question – Is Malik the next big thing? Is Jermaine locked in? Who’s #1? Which Soph blows our skirt up?

Prediction – Malik Delivers, WRs are a team strength by November

Tight EndsThe TE position exemplifies 2 truths. One old and One new

  • Why Saban Hates a Depth Chart
  • Oversimplification of Tommy Rees

A depth chart posted as a pecking order doesn’t universally apply across all positions. This is especially true for Alabama’s TEs this season. The diversity of the position is simply too great.

A simple pecking order would look like this:

CJ Dippre Robbie Ouzts

Amari Niblack Danny Lewis

Miles Kitzleman Ty Lockwood

But this masks the nuance.

CJ is the classic in line TE – he starts at this position

Ouzts is FB, which we call HB and lump with the TEs – he starts at this position

Amari Niblack is a motion / receiving TE – he’s the best/starter at this position

Lewis, Kitz, Lockwood probably back up each position respectively.

That’s 3 defacto starters across TE variants and because TE is football’s version of chess’s of the knight. An effective weapon when deployed correctly.

Alabama routinely goes to 12 personnel and 13 isn’t unheard of. Consider with the respective skill set of each, having Dippre in line, Ouzts behind the line, and Niblack split out… there are available mismatches in the passing game, certainly enough to keep the defense honest.

That brings us to the 2nd truth – the oversimplification of Tommy Rees

Tommy Rees did great things with the TE at ND, so he’ll do great things with the TE at Alabama.

OK. True. Oversimplification doesn’t mean wrong, its just leaving context off the table.

Let’s be honest. Rees did good things with the TE at ND because he had Micheal Mayer and not much else. He used his knight – chess piece – to create mismatches. Faster than LBs, bigger than DBs.

Yes. That should translate to CJ and Amari. But it buries the lead.

The ability to create and exploit mismatches with formations and motion extends to every offensive position. At ND Rees was limited by the available relative talent. At Alabama he’ll have more tools at his disposal. I won’t say he’s Sark in this regard but after 2 seasons of BOB, it’ll tickle that fancy.

Question – does CJ or Niblack lead the TE room in production?

Prediction – Ouzts scores on a FB dive – its gotta happen

Offensive LineFor my money this group hinges on a single player at a single position. No pressure, but Terrence Ferguson – Ferg is the linchpin.

Let’s start with how we get to this place.

  • JC Latham returns as the started at Right Tackle – he can also play left
  • Tyler Booker takes over for Ekiyor at Right Guard – we know he can also play left
  • Seth McLaughlin returns at Center. He has been the steadying factor each of the last 2 seasons such that its board line treasonous not to give him the benefit of the doubt, but that may not be necessary as Saban has been complementary of Seth’s effort and progress.

Now, we’re 60% through the starters. How is Ferg the linchpin?

Coming out of spring I was convinced Elijah Pritchet and Kayden Procter would compete for the starting LT position – check that is happening.

But… the loser would displace Darrian Dalcourt at Left Guard.

The emergence of Ferguson – himself highly motivated to not be overlooked in 2023 – is turning up the heat at the LT position.

Pritchet and Procter may no longer win the LG position as a consolation. The bench is now a legit possibility.

If Ferg wins the LG position, it’s a good sign. Recall our pre-spring show when we called Procter the canary in the coal mine. If he walks into a starting job is may speak poorly of the rest of the unit. If he’s at best in a rotation… that has to mean others are stepping up. Hello Mr. Ferguson.

Also, note Saban has said nice things about him. “he’s playing really well, really well”

It’s the 2nd ‘really’ that gets me. It’s a point of emphasis.

Here’s how I see the 2 deep shake out:

LT – Elijah Pritchet / Kayden Procter

LG – Terrence Ferguson / Darrian Dalcourt

C – Seth McLaughlin / Darrian Dalcourt

RG – Tyler Booker / Jaeden Roberts or Roq Montgomery

RT – JC Latham / Wilken Formby or Olaus Alinen or Miles McVay

Question – Do Pritch and Proc rotate early in the season?

Prediction – We haven’t seen the last of Dalcourt. This will be one of Alabama’s better offensive lines. Position is in good hands for upcoming seasons.

Alabama Football Podcast learns how the crimson luchador Nacho Alabamo managed so quickly to writ his name in crimson flame.Toxic Spill at Taco Casa Not RequiredAs far as origin stories go, Nacho’s claim is fairly benign and extraordinarily common. Our game day hero Nacho Alabamo is the result of an unsupervised grown man on shore leave with a bunch of peso’s burning a hole in his pocket. As these things go, it could have turned out much worse than a crimson pancho and luchador mask.

Nachos Dusk Till DawnNacho Alabamo shares his game day routine spanning classic Tuscaloosa breakfast, this one time at band practice, owning the quad, navigating security, and tending to the on field action. It’s a long hard day and our hero is equipped for the challenge.

Nacho Outside AlabamoWe talk about road trips and fan responses Nacho has received in SEC locations and beyond – Oxford, Starksville, West Georgia, New Orleans, and even Las Vegas.

Where’s Nacho?Online Alabamo can be found on Facebook and Instagram where he frequently releases creative videos and pictures. This spring Nacho is planning appearances at A-Day along with Softball and Basketball games. Play your cards right and you might find yourself in a classy bar with Nacho Alabamo and the Podcast Travel team, which occurred last fall during the Austin Peay weekend.

8/19/21 MFB Practice 14Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban Photo by Kent GidleyBelow are excerpts from my notes leading into the discussion. You can see we cover lots of ground in what turns out to be a nearly 90 minute discussion. We hope you’ll tune in and experience why Jordan is a favorite on our virtual tailgate calls. Roll Tide.

Welcome back Alabama fans and do we have a treat for you.

Tonight we’re joined by – Current Texas HS coach, future coaching legend, long time podcast follower and Support team icon – Jordan

Coward calls it a meat sandwich, I’m calling it a pizza with the topping to the edge. There’s no shallow end to this pool. Let’s jump in.

Last couple seasons you’ve been a QB Coach and more recently added Passing Game Coordinator. How do you characterize your offensive approach?

How do you balance or coordinate when a team has co-coordinators, Running and Passing Game Coordinators?

  • How do you call a game? Rules for the roles… how to prevent it from being predictable? How to remain fluid in game?
  • Ego balancing is lot to do with the personalities but it happens. Saw it at Alabama with Mike Locksley and Josh Gattis
  • Cohesion – blocking schemes, play action, with potentially split practice time

When calling a game, what preferences, Pros, Cons do you see for calling it from the bench vs the booth?

  • Do sight lines differ significantly field to field – booth placements or crown on the field?
  • Do QBs have a preference where you’re located?

We’ve all heard a version of – everyone should be required to wait tables at least once in their life because it’ll change how they experience and treat service workers. I imagine there’s a coaches version of that… what do average fans not understand or take for granted?

You hear fans say things like…

  • Everyone in the stadium knew where they were going with the ball
  • You gotta throw beyond the sticks
  • Run the damn ball
  • How can you be unpredictable while doing what everyone thinks is right in a given situation?
  • Which is more important, predictability or execution?

Recruiting – have a player recruited to big time college? What level? What is the recruiting process like from the HS coach side?

Building relationships with HS programs, establishing a pipeline

Smart guy once said ‘every action has an equal and opposite reaction’. This has a corollary to the concept of unintended consequences. At the HS level, what impacts have you observed as a result of the expanded Transfer Portal?

  • How about the extra Covid year? Essentially an expanded inventory of players

What about coaches moving around? In particular HS coaches climbing the ladder – within HS ranks and crossing over to college?

Let’s pull this closer into the realm of Alabama Football. Talk about the differences between a College and NFL offensive approach. BOB and Sark as proxies. Both very talented coaches with each bringing an Heisman winner to Tuscaloosa but the product experience was so different.

OK. You saw this coming. Tommy Rees – you’ve done some homework. In fact, I think one of the few places in the world with 6am film Friday morning film breakdowns was our Zoom team chat line. What do you see from Rees that excites or gives pause?

For the OC job, what other names were you watching for rooting for, prior to Rees emerging?

DC remains open. Pruitt, Leonard, Schulman….. Steel, Armstrong, Lake, T-Rob…. Who do you think / hope emerges?

From the perspective of a coach. What do you appreciate most (or least) from Saban?

Saban has said he can’t watch football for fun because he starts breaking it down and it becomes work. If he’s gonna work he may as well go back to the office. You’re not there yet are you?

With informed entertainment in mind – Sunday’s Super Bowl. What do you watch or see or track that would help us casual fans to enjoy and understand what’s we’re seeing just a little bit more.

Part 2 – Too Early Offensive Starting Lineup

Part 3 – Too Early Offensive Starting Lineup

2023 Alabama Project Defensive Starting LineupCouple notes before we get started. Keep in mind we’re doing this in January so of course they will be movement but there’s not fun in waiting. We also account for formations and personnel groupings, so we’ll run through more than a base 11.

I come pretty close to diving into the topic of Personnel Groupings vs Formations. I stop short of a full swan dive but can’t resist the urge to cover a couple points. This may be a topic we revisit if there’s interest.

DL – Jahiem Otis

DL – Justin Eboigbe

DL – Tim Smith

OLB – Dallas Turner

OLB Chris Braswell

ILB – Deontae Lawson

ILB – Justin Jefferson

CB – Kool-Aid McKinstry

CB – Terrion Arnold

SS – Kristian Story

FS – Caleb Downs

Money – Earl Little

We do talk through multiple options at each of these positions along with key position battles to watch during spring and fall.

Its important to note, we’re doing this in January primarily for entertainment purposes. We’ll get serious coming out of Spring and of course leading up to Fall Camp.

2023 Offseason Roster MovementThe college football off season, as it does this time of year is hitting like a wrecking ball. Recruiting, Transfers, and Coaching changes remain in full effect and what better time than this for an off-season podcast touchpoint?

Truth be told, I tend to fall into the off-season rabbit hole pretty deeply myself. Sometimes emerging long enough for an A-Day wrap or a summertime rant but we’re going to try something different this time around.

Perhaps I’m drunk on new year intentions or perhaps (more likely), I haven’t yet been waylaid by a busy work schedule. But dammit if we don’t have plans and dammit if we haven’t already put them into motion.

So here goes. A three-part series on the current state of the Alabama Roster.

Part 1 – NFL declarations and transfers

Part 2 – Too Early Offensive Starting Lineup

Part 3 – Too Early Offensive Starting Lineup

Below are notes for each along with the podcast lines posted as they release. Meanwhile, Roll Tide friends!

Part 1 – Roster MovementFocus here is movement related to NFL and Transfer Portal activity. We’ll take a deeper look at recruiting and coaching changes in subsequent shows.

NFL DeclarationsOf course we’d like for many of these players to return to Alabama, that’s not our metric. Our measure if whether we believe the player is ready to move on, have they maximized their status such that coming back to college is not likely to benefit their careers. On this scale, surprisingly, most are ready, and all receive our best wishes.

Bryce Young

Jamyr Gibbs

Will Anderson

Brian Branch

Eli Ricks – my strongest and most candid take lives here but we sure wish Eli well.

Tyler Steen

Emil Ekyor

Cameron Latu

Jordan Battle

DeMarco Hellams

DJ Dale

Byron Young

Henry Too Too – he’s going to make a great coach when his playing career is over

Jaylen Moody – out of eligibility

Kendall Randolph – out of eligibility

Next we spend time talking about the players departing Alabama through the transfer portal. Turns out there’s quite a number and a couple interesting themes – 5 offensive lineman and 5 wide receivers. This is curious given the underwhelming performances by these units for most of the last 2 seasons. Is this a bad omen for Alabama or is this a much needed house cleaning?

Players departing Alabama via the transfer portal.Tommy Bowles, Tackle, Kentucky

Tommy Brockenmeyer, Tackle, TCU

Javion Cohen, Guard, Miami – Javion is the biggest surprise for obvious reasons. Check out our discussion.

Damieon George, Tackle, Florida

Amari Kight, Tackle, UCF

Treashon Holden, Receiver, Oregon

JoJo Earl, Receiver, TCU

Aaron Anderson, Receiver, LSU

Tyler Harrel, Receiver, TBD

Christian Leary, Receiver Georgia Tech

Trey Sanders, Running back, TCU – we’ll always hold a candle for the career that could have been

Demouy Kennedy – Linebacker, TBD

Brandon Ingraham, Defensive Line, Syracuse

Khyree Jackson, Cornerback, Oregon – posted one of the best plays of the season during 2022

Jack Martin, Punter, TBD

There are a number of players we discuss that may yet be candidates to transfer out. Check out the show for this list and lots more fun. Roll Tide
