This is a Bonus Interview Episode with Nancy Roberts. It was recorded on March 23, 2021 and edited for publication on April 20, 2021.
“I can’t even remember learning to knit. I started spinning and dyeing over 40 years ago. Five years ago I bought a knitting machine as a tool for dyeing. I make yarn with long repeats of color by machine knitting undyed yarn, dyeing the knitted fabric, and re-knitting it. I have written articles in Spin-Off and Knitwords magazines and I teach this technique at my studio in the SF Bay Area and at guilds and conferences around North America. For more information about me and my work, please visit my website: www.machineknittingtodyefor.com"

1/2 lb or 300 g pure soap flakes (Ivory)
1 cup or 200 ml methylated spirits (methyl alcohol)
1 small bottle or 50 ml oil of eucalyptus
Mix methylated spirits with soap flakes. Add oil of eucalyptus. Use 1 T per garment. Dissolve in hot water and pour into the lukewarm washing water. Hand or machine wash on wool cycle - no rinse unless it’s white. The eucalyptus oil preserves wool. Squeeze water out and roll in towel or spin out in washer. Lay flat out of direct sun.

Zipper hint from Daisyknits.com
“The best way that I have found to put a zipper into a garment is to glue the zipper into place using a good fabric glue. Let it dry completely. Then sew the zipper in place. No pins are needed once the glue is dry and every thing moves through the sewing machine smoothly and at the same time. Do make sure that before you glue the zipper in place you have treated the knitted fabric so that it will not shrink when washed or cleaned.”

Reduce heat to low and cover to let sweat for 25-30 minutes. Add salt to taste and 2 bay leaves as well as water - 4 cups for double strength or 8 cups for full strength stock. Bring to a simmer. Let simmer without boiling for 30-45 minutes. Remove chicken and let cool until cool enough to handle to remove the meat from the bones and skin. Strain and de-fat stock. This freezes very well.

VitaMeataVegeMin - How I make yogurt
Heat a half gallon of organic whole milk to 180F then cool to 120F. Let ¼ cup of plain yogurt with live cultures come to room temperature. Temper the yogurt with the warm milk. Add tempered yogurt to the pot of warm milk. Mix. Pour into two quart sized canning jars and place in a cooler filled with hot tap water. Let set overnight or at least eight hours. Line a large colander with a flour sack cotton towel set over a container to catch the whey. Tie up the four corners of the towel together and suspend over the colander/container to drain. Let drain until reduced by half. Refrigerate the thickened yogurt and the drained whey separately. Use the whey to thin the yogurt if needed or when making baked goods. Otherwise, pour over your hydrangeas to acidify the soil. Sweeten the yogurt, if desired, with stevia and berries.

In a food processor pulse 2 T lemon juice, 5 T cider vinegar, 1 t dried oregano, 1 t dried basil, 1 t dried tarragon, 1 clove garlic, 2 T Dijon mustard, scant t molasses, 1 T mayonnaise. Bygones
I apologized for coughing into the microphone in Episode 3. Prescription cough syrup didn’t do much for me but I had much better luck with an over the counter bottle of Robitusin with an antihistamine. I also mentioned the Folk School in Brasstown NC where I took a class about CSMs.
Likes/Dislikes
I complained about exercise videos. I am working my way through the Insanity program.
Bonus Dislike: Daylight Saving Time is back and we hates it. Here is a great video called “How is this still a thing?” It has a bit of salty language, the worst of which was bleeped out.
Swatching
The proposed gray cardigan sweater will be knit with Lopi yarn. I am using both the Charcoal Ribbed and the Classic Male cardigan patterns as the major influences. I plan to knit it on the LK150 machine.
No handout or links for Leslye Solomon’s swatch philosophy. I also mentioned Sally Melville and her Craftsy class.
For machine swatchers
This yellow gauge rule (scroll down to item #99861) is very helpful when you measure across 30 stitches and 40 rows.
For hand swatchers
If the desired gauge is 16 stitches over 4 inches or 10 cm, cast on three times 16 or 48 stitches on a suitable waste yarn and a few rows (at least 5 rows). Change to project yarn and knit 20-40 as many as you can stand. Switch back to waste yarn for a few rows, let’s say 5 rows. Bind off or just remove from the needles. Steam swatch to set stitches and even everything out. Thread a thin contrasting color yarn or thread on each side of center 16 stitches of the swatch. Measure between the thread markers in tenths of an inch or in centimeters. Take three measurements and average them for your gauge for that swatch. Decide from there if you like the fabric and want to adjust your pattern to suit this gauge or if you prefer to change needle sizes to get the exact gauge you need or want. I find that row gauge is less important in hand knitting, generally, but it is easier to measure.
MK finished objects
6 pairs of socks using Red Heart Heart and Sole, Knit Picks Stroll Tweed, Kroy stripes, and Lana Grossa (shown). Not shown are the Trekking and another tweed yarn from Browning & Wolffe. Check out the projects on Ravelry if you want to see additional pictures and read about the particulars.
HK works in progress
I have lost that loving feeling for my lunch hour socks. Unknown yarn knitted toe up with the skyp rib pattern for top of foot. Destined for frogging.
I restarted l’envelope by Sally Melville knitted with size 10 Denise needles and Mountain Colors wool crepe yarn, held double.
Yarn Acquisition
Yarn purchased at the CSM class from Eric Wolffe. I bought lots of the Alpaca-Merino-Acrylic 50 gram balls as well as a skein of tweed yarn, and one angora-acrylic yarn.
