We are two Caribbean-American dietitian nutritionists with a podcast designed to educate and excite conversations in women’s health, food, nutrition, and wellness. Every week we’ll discuss proven techniques with an entertaining flair to energize and encourage you in your journey to a healthier physical, mental, and social living.
Growing up in a Caribbean household is not for the weak of heart. Since June is Caribbean Heritage Month, we want to tell you how it was growing up in a traditional Haitian and Jamaican household in the United States of 'Merica. We explore familial and social dynamics, cultural cuisines, and how these experiences shaped the women we are today.

We have Psychiatrist Dr. Canary with us today busting all the myths, educating us on how to introduce the topic of sex to kids, how to discuss sex with your partner, and how liberating sex can be the older you get. If you are in a committed relationship, married or single, this is a discussion you don’t want to miss!

Today on the podcast we interviewed Michelle Tam, a New York Times bestselling author and founder of the popular blog Nom Nom Paleo. Michelle takes us on a journey on how she discovered the paleo diet, how it changed her life and why the paleo diet might be right for you. Confession: we had major preconceived notions of what the paleo diet is and is not, and it’s not that those notions are complete gone LOL, but Michelle will tell you that she isn't the paleo police nor does she push her lifestyle (which she has personalized to work for her) on everyone she meets. If you've ever wondered the paleo diet truly is listen to this episode to get all your questions answered.

Sugar! We see this ingredient in a lot of food items. From breads, candies, and pasta sauce, if it’s not the first ingredient in most products these days, it is an ingredient somewhere down the line. Back in the day most didn’t have access to honey, and table sugar. Which such easy access and overconsumption in today’s world, have we become addicted to sugar? In today’s podcast episode, we’ve brought back Functional Medicine physician and Internist Dr. Nicole Peoples to answer these question “is Sugar Addiction a Real Thing?” *Note: This episode is for educational purposes only and should not be used as medical advice.

The COVID vaccine is here! For some people that is a good thing, and they have already been vaccinated, while for others skepticism remain. Despite the thousands of deaths that have occurred in the U.S. alone from COVID infections, black and brown communities are still a little hesitant on the efficacy of the vaccine and trusting the healthcare system as a whole. Why? Well, people of color have endured centuries of violated trust (ex: lack of informed consent and harmful experimentation) which are still present today!
In today's podcast episode we ask Functional Medicine physician, Dr. Nicole Peoples, some really tough questions about the efficacy of the vaccine, the truth on trial/study process for the vaccine, how to stay informed and why she decided to take the vaccine after initially being a skeptic herself.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for many. Whether you started out social distancing with your significant other, family members, friends, or your kids - the fact that we are in one space for long periods with one group of people or alone, can’t mingle from girls/guys night out to social events or just from person to person is affecting a lot of us on a mental level. COVID-19 has and is actually ruining relationships! Quarantining for long periods of time with people you thought you got along with is causing some to take a closer look at their relationships. On the other hand, not being able to keep up with certain relationships, due to social distancing and stressors is also causing people to cut ties with relationships. Seeking professional help is key during this time. On today's podcast we have Dr. D, a marriage and family therapist, here to save and enlighten us on how to salvage our platonic and non-platonic relationships during this time and how to build emotional intelligence. As an added bonus check out Dr. D's 'Resilient Living' app as a great self-help tool to transform your mind and relational skills.

Are you old enough to remember the ‘Spice Up Your Life’ chorus song lyrics? If you do, this song was literally years ahead of any random controlled, doubled blinded scientific study. Spices have been used (and are still being used) in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries as anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal agents. Science now is coming around and realizing the health benefits of this ancestral practice. In today’s podcast we invite BuzzFeed contributor and Harvard graduate Dr. Kanchan Koya to explore the healthy benefits of spices such as turmeric, cayenne, sumac and fennel, to name a few. Plus, grab a pen and a sheet of paper because she shares with us tips on how to gradually increase spices in the diet and 3 spices everyone should MUST have in their pantry.

By definition the term ‘diet' means the types of foods (and drinks) which are habitually consumed. In the 21st century ‘ diet' also lends itself to the foods which someone restricts themselves from eating. In our opinion, everyone has the right to choose which foods that do and do not enter their bodies. Although that is a basic human right, truth be told food discrimination is alive and well. We’ve both had patients and clients who live in bigger bodies, have better metabolic panels that we do, and are discriminated against because of foods they eat. In the words of our guest, Christina Johnson, MS, RDN, LDN, our patients and clients don’t “owe us health” nor do they have to justify why they choose to eat the foods they do. On today’s podcast episode we have a candid conversation with Christyna Johnson as we discuss body liberation, HAES, and the anti-dietitian community from the perspective of an Anti-Diet Dietitian.

Generally speaking comfort foods are a combination of salt, sugar and fat. We’re not food scientists, but why is it that salt, sugar and fat are always found in a lot of fast foods and junk foods? As Registered Dietitian Nutritionists we’ve noticed people of color die sooner and sicker than their white counterparts because they live in nutritionally sparked food swamps, desserts, and apartheids to name a few. Why is that?!?! Could it be because of systematic marginalization and the food choices available in the zip codes where people of color live? Today, on the podcast, we have Dr. Eric Walsh, a practicing physician and health care administrator who served both President G.W. Bush and Barack Obama here to teach us about inflammation, epigenetic, free radicals, stress and how our food choices play a role.

On this episode we have Marquisele (Mikey) Mercedes, the author of “The Unbearable Whiteness and Fatphobia of “Anti-Diet Dietitians”. Mikey who is broadly interested in how racism, anti-Blackness, and fat phobia shape health care, research and public health, found that Anti-Diet Dietitians (ADD) on social media included a lot of dietitians who “sit in their photos and show their stomach folds” or feign eating desserts and pizza”. She is "mad at the ADD who say that you can still love your body and want it to be smaller”. Mikey is here today to give us more insight on why she is so passionate about this topic, why she wrote the article, and why she believes the “[invasion] of the body liberation space” is another form of being “violent” against the oppressed.

We love our comfort foods right? We are often recommending that you retain your culture in your lifestyle because otherwise how sustainable would living a healthy lifestyle be? But when it comes to our culture, why is it that we focus a lot on the unhealthy foods that were introduced to us during slavery? What does moderation really mean when it comes to eating? How close could you be to disease developing if you continue to eat highly processed foods? Is it careless to make general recommendations of “eat whatever you crave morning, noon, and night”? Today we have on the podcast Dr. Columbus Batiste who is an Interventional Cardiologist and the co-founder of The Slave Food Project. He will answer all of the above questions and explain to us how risky it is to have a “cavalier” mindset when it comes to food.

Have you realized how influential social media gurus are when it comes to what decision you make about your health? To be honest, it’s a crying shame! These gurus have more impact on your life than your doctor or dietitian simply because they have a large Instagram following. No wonder why orthroexia, cheat days, and “have the extra cookie” mentality is so pervasive. Today on the podcast we have a candid conversation with one of our day one dietitians, Kim Wisner, about how health professionals can call out the bull and promote a well-balanced diet and lifestyle which is inclusive for people of color.

What have you heard about breastfeeding? In the black community, there are several myths and facts that have kept most black mothers from breastfeeding. We are celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week and we thought it was no better time to discuss the history of breastfeeding in the United States. There has been a movement in recent years, and as a result, we have seen an increase in breastfeeding occurring in black mothers. Prior to this it would not have been uncommon for black mothers to shy away from breastfeeding their babies. Historically black slaves were forced to be wet nurses for the children of their slave owners, most times at the detriment of their own newborn babies. This left a traumatic and generational distaste for breastfeeding in black communities. In today's episode we have our in-house mama here to remove stigmas surrounding black breastfeeding. Our very own co-host Johane Filemon discusses the truth about breastfeeding in America and shares tips on how to support and educate yourself if you choose to breastfeed.

Let’s be honest, there is nothing attractive about the term "geriatric pregnancy”. Though ovarian aging is a real thing and different for every woman, we need to normalize what age women decide to conceive, whether is through natural conception or IVF. Furthermore, in communities of color miscarriages and infertility are not highly discussed, although fibroids, which can cause miscarriages, are common. Truth be told, not all doctors have the best bedside manners when speaking to women of color related to their fertility options. This could be related to a number of implicit and unconscious biases and even a lack of time. As a result, this may delay fertility services and treatment options and even lead to death. Today, we have Dr. Shannon Clark, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, to discuss her personal and empowering fertility story, what you need to know if you want kids, and what to ask your OB-GYN.

In today’s episode we sit down with Dr. Stephanie Burgos, an Emergency Medicine physician with a passion for eastern medicine. We can't speak for everyone, but we think it's safe to say people are now afraid to go to hospitals, much less visit the emergency rooms because of the C-word (COVID-19). Physicians like Dr. Stephanie are amongst the frontline workers and they see everything…..and we mean EVERYTHING! But, is the emergency room the right place for you to go during a pandemic? If you have the flu, a deep cut, or a fracture should you go to the ER or is urgent care a better option? In today's podcast episode we invited Dr. Stephanie to speak to us about emergency medicine 101, the strangest things she's seen in her career, why she views foods as medicine and what she believes everyone should know about their health and wellness during this time.

Why are we told to take some medications with food? What happens when one is told to take a medication with food but does not know when their next meal is coming? Did you realize that your pharmacist is there to support you when you’ve been given a prescription. Look, we want you to be just as bold asking the pharmacist medication related questions as you are asking what aisle the toilet paper and toothpaste is on! Being well informed on your prescription is very important. In today's episode we have our in-house pharmacist, Dr. JaRyce Echols, PharmD here to empower and educate us on all things related to medication management, what to do when food insecurity is a problem, and how the dietitian and the pharmacist can work together to serve patients and clients.

Wellness fatigue may be a novel concept to you, it surely was to us, but it is a real thing ya’ll! As dietitians we’re always looking to improve the health and wellbeing of our clients. One thing that caught our attention lately is that everyone seems to be emotionally and physically burned out while social distancing, Mom-ing, and simply trying to keep it all together. The usual outlets that we took for granted that were as simple as being able to leave our house or going out with friends to get some relief from our everyday stressors are no longer there. Add on to all of the that, burning yourself out because of the pressures that comes from healthy lifestyle culture. Today on the podcast we have psychotherapist, Shayla Peterson, LCSW, LISW-CP, here to talk to us about what wellness fatigue really is, who it impacts, and strategies you can take to manage and be an overcomer.

It’s sad to say that white fragility exists. The question is, does it support racism? Talks about cultural competency and sensitivity is a step in the right direction, but a single cultural competency course will not change racial thinking, behavior, and understanding. In today’s podcast episode we have here with us again 2 of our favorite guests: Melanie Calhoun, a diversity and inclusion consultant, who will share with us personal experiences and tips to challenge white fragility, and Mat Jean, LMFT who give us a unique perspective on how people of color can deal with microaggressions and overt aggressions, learning about the REAL black history, self-awareness and non-violence that can equip you to “see your worth and value”.

Food injustice is a social issue that is a result of the ever present food swamps, food mirages, food apartheids, and food insecurity. We here at Nutrition Lifestyles with Kim & Johane believe all people should have access to healthy nutrient dense food which are also culturally appropriate. Yes, we’re talking about easy access to latin food, caribbean food, southern home-cooking and your great-great grandmas secret sauce recipe to name a few. Why should one race or ethnic group not have access to food? In todays podcast, we have our friend and author of the award winning food blog A Couple Cooks here to passionately discuss these issue with us and share tips on what you can do in your respective communities to ensure all humans have access to food.

As dietitians we focus a lot on food and nutrition, but did you know exercise is equally as important? Women in general face numerous barriers to exercise. One barrier which distinguishes “well-white” women from black women is hair. Yes, hair. Have you all ever sweated out a perm!? We have and let us tell you IT. AINT. PRETTY. Furthermore, naturalistas like us invest time, energy, and money into our hair, and although it is much easier to have a physically active lifestyle now, there are times when simply washing out a style is a tough cookie to swallow. Another huge barrier is the the lack of culturally appropriate health recommendations. Today we have Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Dr. Loneke Blackman Carr who is an Assistant Professor of Community & Public Health Nutrition at the University of Connecticut. She specializes in behavioral weight control interventions with an emphasis on weight loss through dietary and physical activity behavior change. Much of her research focuses on black women to address disparities in obesity and the need for more effective weight loss interventions. Dr. Loneke stops by on the podcast today to discuss issues related to the above stated issues and what interventions can be implemented to elicit change.

Racial tensions are currently at an epic high for our generation! Individuals in the BIPOC community have learned to protect themselves by using their first amendment right, sparking professional conversations about diversity and inclusion. What most do not realize is that those within the the BIPOC have been finding ways to conform in and out of professional settings. To do so, we have become masters at Code-Switching... yes, Code-Switching. Code-Switching is not only an art, but it’s a science. In today’s podcast episode we have Melanie Calhoun who is a diversity and inclusion consultant with a focus on racism and bias in Corporate America to teach us how the syntax and linguistics of code-switching may improve communication and start breaking down barriers in and out of the professional setting.

What's going on currently in our country is new to everyone! We have been given recommendations by the health experts to practice social distancing. Outside of our wonderful healthcare workers, grocery store workers, essential truck drivers, pharmacies, most have been told to stay home. If you are social distancing with kids at home like I am, you may be feeling overwhelmed or burned out trying to play the role of both parent and teacher. Recently I (Johane) jokingly posted on my Facebook account that "if you see me talking to myself just know I am having a parent teacher conference" LOL (you gotta find laughter even in the hardest times). Y'all know I'm not lying though! Juggling multiple roles you are not accustomed to, with no preparation, can be trying. Most parents know that structure is important as it helps maintain some sort of sanity in our lives. Parenthood is a joy, but it also comes with challenges. Today on the podcast we have Mat Jean, LMFT, who is a father of 4 girls and a mental health professional trained in psychotherapy and family systems, here to help me mother of 4 boys answer Kim’s questions on how to calm some of the chaos when managing your kids.
Mathew Jean is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and the owner and principal therapist of Beachstone Counseling in Pompano Beach, FL. Mathew developed the non-profit organization The Go-To Therapist because he realized that he wanted to be the therapist he needed 15-20 years ago. He also created the apparel company Sober Words with a mission of "Sending Love and Shedding Light"

The struggle is real! COVID-19 better known as the Coronavirus is here and it’s a pandemic! Schools are closing, people are dying, countries are on lock down, and we are social distancing ourselves in an attempt to reduce chances of contracting the Coronavirus or even delaying what may be inevitable. We should all know by now how the virus is spread and the CDC recommendations to protect yourself, but there is still an uncertainty surrounding the virus...And uncertainty creates fear! Have you visited your local grocery store lately? It’s no wonder why toilet paper is a scarce commodity and bread can’t stay on the shelves. Should we really be stocking our fridge to the brim? What kinds of foods should we buy? Will we become deficient in vitamins and minerals if we are not eating the right foods? People are scared because there are a lot of unknowns. In today’s podcast we have Yi Min Teo MS, RD, CNSC, who recently came back from Singapore, to discuss with us what you need to know about food, nutrition, and the Coronavirus.

Sleep is the new superpower. No, seriously it is. Did you know LeBron James (professional basketball player) gets at least 8 hours of sleep a night and Roger Feder (professional tennis player) gets at least 12 hours? A good nights sleep does wonders for the mind and body while not resting adequately and abundantly can throw off your immune system, impair decision making, results in unwanted weight gain, mood disorders, and diabetes to name a few. Ummm- no, thank you! Today we have Dr. Amy Bender who is a Senior Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor of Kinesiology here to share with us the importance of sleep. Dr. Amy Bender has developed sleep optimization strategies for numerous Canadian olympic and professional teams and is here to share with us why sleep is the new sexy.

If you find there are more pharmacies than grocery stores in your neighborhood, Houston, you have a major problem! Medication has its rightful and respectful place in our neighborhoods, but so does food. While acute situations may call for the use of medication as the 1st line of defense, chronic conditions may not. Lifestyle diseases can be managed though lifestyle interventions i.e. diet and exercise. In today's podcast episode we interview Texan based pharmacist, Dr. Ryce Echols, who addresses why medicine as "the easy way out" is not always the best option.

Gentrification is defined as the process of renovating a housing district so that it harmonizes to the taste of the middle-class. In other words, it’s a complicated turf war. Gentrification not only impacts the housing/commercial market, but also the food of a particular location. Inevitably corner stores become extinct, full-fledged grocery stores pop up, and smoothie palaces, juice bars, and organic produce become a “thing”. In today’s podcast episode we discuss the positive and negative impacts of gentrification and what we can do as health practitioners to support neighborhoods that are experiencing this process.

So many, in fact, too many of us have dealt with mental issues at sometime or another. Anxiety, panic attacks, depression, substance abuse, schizophrenia and eating disorders all fall within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. As dietitians we are taught the hardcore science behind food and nutrition. We understand the ins and outs of the Krebs cycle , ketosis, etc, but what about dealing with a patient or client who has crippling anxiety, repeat panic attacks, and/or depression? Moreover, some cultures and even religions do not consider mental disorders to be an actual thing. In this podcast episode we don’t have all the answers, but we do have an open and candid conversation with future dietitian and co-founder of Dead the Silence, Anthony Duncan, about his close to home experience with mental disorders and its impact on nutrition.Connect with Johane:

How do you define health? Is it being a certain body size? Working out a certain amount of hours a week? Is it getting 8 hours of sleep? Eating the recommended servings of fruit/vegetables on a daily basis? How about finding peace of mind? In your definition of health, did you ever consider mental health wellness as part of your definition of health? Mental health does impacts overall wellness. Yes, we’re talking about your emotions, food choices, fight versus flight responses, and consequently your hormones. They are all connected! In today's episode we have mental health therapist, Mathew Jean, LMFT, of Beach Stone Counseling, to answer all our questions about the connect between diet and mental health, how the lack of mental health therapy has impact our communities for generations, and what we can do to make a change and break the cycle.

We get it - diet culture sucks! It has created a hostile environment where fat phobia is stigmatized and thin privilege reigns supreme. This results in an overall dysfunctional relationship with food and it's no surprise society has now come to reject the 36"-24"-36" measurements of "beauty". Intuitive Eating (IE) rejects diet culture and promotes the love of self, and the love of all foods. While it is true we should respect our bodies and honor our health, social media has painted only a small fragment of what IE really is. Spoiler alert: it's not all about having a second helping of apple pie or eating a cake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. IE is a DEEP framework based on ten guiding principles that can be applied for someone who has diabetes, high cholesterol, and other metabolic diseases. In today's episode we have Ayana Habtemariam MSW, RDN, LD who is a Certified Intuitive Eating counselor here to answer all our burning questions about the truth behind IE.

Recently we discussed foods that we and others have heard described as “White People Food”. Although not referred to in the same manner, there are foods that people like to think of as "black people food". Truthfully these foods are more synonymous with the south than they are with a particular race. Southern states like Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama eat these so called "black people foods" and they are very popular among all races in those states. To take this a step further, is 'unhealthy' the appropriate term to describe these foods? While it is true that preparation is important when it comes to cooking and health management, do we have to remove all of the foods that black communities love and are traditions in their family? In today's episode we have a guest dietitian, Ladarius Madison, who was born and raised in Alabama. He’s going to discuss with us reasons why some foods are categorized as "black people food”, should we make changes to our cultural food favs, and how health professionals can help.

Question? Are there foods that you really don’t care to eat cause you categorize them as “white people food”? Do those so called “white people food” create an unattainable picture of health? Well, however you choose to answer this question this is the exact way the HuffPost presented this question in a 2018 article (see link below). Let's be real when you think about brussel sprouts, quinoa, and cauliflower rice versus sweet potato pie, collard greens, and black -eyed peas, is there a racial divide in your mind? In today's episode we have a guest dietitian, Lindsay Smith, who practices in East Harlem, who will share with us issues on food culture, gentrification, and answer the question, does white people food really exist? Oh, and for those of you wondering - Lindsay is a white dietitian.

Health and wellness trends we love to hate, fake food news and why PETA may come for us after listening to this episode (PETA please don't!). We both grew up watching our mothers wash their meats. No, not with soap and water, but with lemon juice, vinegar, sour orange, and other acidic substances. Recently, the USDA came out with an article stating people are putting themselves at risk when they wash or rinse raw poultry, or any meat for that matter. What do you think? Do you wash your meats? For us it’s very much a part of our cultures and to be honest with both us being ServSafe certified we are torn. It is our belief washing your meat is an integral component to the Afro-Carribean, Afro-American, and Latin cultures as well.
In today’s episode learn: -How to avoid food borne illness -Ideal pH for bacteria to grow on meat -If you should really should stop washing your meat

Men are psychologically and physiologically different from women. Think of one man in your life an answer these questions: are they intuned to their emotions? are they a risk taker? do they value their health? If you answered "no", "yes", "no" then congratulations --- you're most likely dealing with a typical man. Focusing a little more on health did you know males are the weaker sex throughout life in that aspect. When it comes to health, the health of black men ranks lowest across nearly all racial groups in the United States. The burning question is WHY? In todays episode we are going to go on an exploration by looking at the history of health as it relates to black men and a few case studies from our personal encounters with the men in our lives. Learn: -Why the Tuskegee Study and others similar to it have been detrimental to the health of black men even in 2019. -The top diseases which impact mens health.

Fact: Black teenagers are 50% more likely than white teenagers to display bulimic behaviors. Contrary to popular belief, eating disorders (ED) are not a “white girl” problem! The media has done a wonderful job portraying white thin women suffering from this psychological and physiological disorder when in reality ED impacts men and women of all ages, cultures, religions, and sexual orientation. In the western culture, the ideology of being “thin” gives a higher social status, an increase in power, persuasion, and privilege. People may not like the shape of their eyes, the color of their skin, nor the texture of their hair and think the only thing they can control is when and how much they eat. While we are now seeing a lot of movement for body positivity today, ED still exist.
In this episode learn about:
⚬ A brief history of ED
⚬ How eating disorders impacts the disabled community, athletes, LGBTQ+, the geriatric population, and other unique populations.

“Thin Privilege, Fatphobia, and the Snapback Culture” are 3 heterogeneous and complex ideologies impacting both men and women. Historically, Black and Latin women, who are genetically more voluptuous than their white counterparts, have been the victims of thin privilege…until recently! Furthermore, the categorization of overweight/obese is based on outdated standards where athletes such as Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and Lebron James can be categorized as “overweight” due to their height and weight ratio. While we are now seeing a lot of movement for body positivity today, thin privilege and fatphobia have not disappeared; it is ever-present and ever-evolving. In today's episode, we explore the origins of the body mass index (BMI), examples of thin privilege and fatphobia, and how fatphobia has impacted postpartum women.
In this episode learn about: * The origins and limitations of the body mass index (BMI) * Society's body frame restrictions and their racial implications * The reality in regards to the postpartum snapback culture

"Shawty had them Apple Bottom jeans (jeans); boots with the fur (fur); the whole club was lookin' at her...she got low, low, low, low, low".Who remembers this song? We do! The phrase that stuck out the most from the chorus is "apple bottom jeans". When this song came out, in our early 20s, we had the incorrect idea that we had to have wide hips and an apple bottom to be beautiful in the eyes men, other women, and of society periodt. Fast forwarding a decade nothing has changed. On top of having wide hips and an apple bottom, society has added big breasts and a wash board stomach to the equation. How can a girl keep up when society pressures her to hate her natural God-given physique? In today's episode, we have a heart to heart talk. We address the social pressures women face, the behavioral solutiona, and how to maintain a healthy diet in the midst of all this chaos. In this episode we’ll talk about: * Impact of social media on the societal definition of beauty. * Cross cultural definition of body positivity. * How to start a wellness journey towards body acceptance. * Practical diet related behavioral changes to enable you to love your body.

Let’s get a better understanding of the word ‘HOOD. ‘Hood is a not synonym for a gangster nor is it meant to racialize segments of society. The term ‘Hood, which is a shortened version of the word “neighborhood", is defined as an area or region where someone resides. In today's world, the reference is geared towards inner cities. The inner cities traditionally are home to low-income families that come from all racial, ethnic, and societal backgrounds. It is a common fact that people who live in the inner city have easier access to corner stores and fast-food restaurants that serve foods high in calories, sodium, and fat then they would grocery stores with fresh produce and healthier options. This can have deleterious consequences not only on an individuals health but also on the next generation. In today’s episode, we go beyond the financial and economic constraints of living in the inner city and teach you how to make healthier food choices by utilizing what is accessible to you.
