In January 2020, before taking a role as World Health Organisation special envoy on Covid-19, Dr David Nabarro visited the University of Edinburgh to lead a Food Systems Dialogue (FSD) hosted by the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the FRIED (Food Researchers in Edinburgh) network and the Centre for Security Research. Representatives of diverse agencies gathered to discuss food systems, including academics, NHS leaders, farmers, landowners, nutritionists, chefs, community leaders, NGO workers and civil servants.
In groups, they were asked to reflect on what progress would look like in relation to one of the following topics:
● No child in Scotland should suffer from under-nutrition or micro-nutrient deficiencies or ‘holiday
hunger’ as a result of food insecurity
● Farmers and food producers in Scotland should be able to make a living from producing
sustainable, nutritious and affordable food
● Supermarkets should play their part in tackling over-consumption, under-nutrition and the incidence of NCDs such as obesity
● Edinburgh should reduces her carbon footprint from food consumption as a city
● Food sector workers in Scotland should have decent work and can afford an
adequate standard of living.
Edinburgh University's Dr Kirsteen Shields convened the event and introduces this podcast.
