In today's episode... Allison and Emily get the chance to talk with Rebecca Gibboney about gamification. Rebecca used gamification and game-based learning to engage and motivate students for many years, and now has taken those same games to professional development - using it to inspire, build culture, and encourage risk taking in the educators she coaches. Rebecca shares with Allison and Emily her tips for incorporating gamification in simple ways. They discuss the challenges of engaging all students in the game, creating buy-in, and building relationships. Let the games begin!

Next Episode: January 21st - Gamification Follow Up

Quote of the Episode: As teachers we think gamification has to be this big drawn out thing, but it doesn't have to be. It can be as simple as a game of memory.

Resources Shared:

The Red Rubber Ball by Kevin Carroll - This book was shared by Rebecca as a resource. One of his theories is that work should be play. You shouldn't be able to tell when you are at work versus playing.

Goosechase - virtual scavenger hunt website. They have a free version and a paid version

Flipgrid - a free web based platform for teachers to create "grids". The grids are password protected, and students can then respond using audio/video to specific prompts posed by the teacher.

Danielson Connection: Gamification fits into Domain 1, Planning and Preparation of the Danielson rubric. Domain 1 is all about how the teacher designs instruction. Domain 1 has several sub-domains: knowledge of content & pedagogy, knowledge of students, setting instructional outcomes, knowledge of resources, designing instruction, and designing assessments.

In order to design an effective game for the students, teachers have to know about their students. They also need to think about the outcomes desired. Both the outcomes of the game, and the instructional outcomes. Then, they can start to pull resources to design their game. While the games may not necessarily be content based, they pull from the content. Both Allison and Emily are not currently planning on designing a game around content-specific information, but designing the game will require knowledge of students, pedagogy, resources and outcomes. For those reasons, gamification fits with Domain 1.

Check out Episode 5 and the show notes to see examples of this in action!

In today's episode... Allison and Emily reflect on their month of video-feedbacking! Emily responded to student text-dependent analysis questions or TDAs. Allison responded to her students' personal narrative essay. Each tried different tools and techniques along the way. Listen to the episode to hear what they tried and how they thought it worked on this week's episode.

Quote of the Episode: I felt like I was better able to explain myself as the teacher doing it this way.

Screencastify - Emily stuck with Screencastify. This is one of the tools Sarah suggested last episode. She got around the 50 videos issue by recording some at the end of one month, and the rest in the next. The videos went right into her Google Drive, so she was able to paste the link into the gradebook for the students.

Cyberlink Screen Recorder - This is what Allison used to record her feedback. You do need to purchase this, but she thinks it was a worthwhile investment!

In today's episode...

Allison and Emily get the chance to talk with Sarah Rivera about video feedback. Sarah teaches high school biology and intro to STEM at a STEM school in Ohio. She's also a Google Trainer and Nearpod PioNear. Together, Allison, Emily, and Sarah brainstorm ways to give personalized feedback using screencasting. Sarah gives an overview of various programs to use for video feedback, and they all talk about the advantages/disadvantages of teacher-to-student video feedback as well as student-to-student video feedback (peer review).

December 17th - Feedback Follow Up

Quote of the Episode:

"There's so many ingredients to the feedback soup that you have to consider when you are giving the feedback."

Educational Duct Tape Podcast - While Emily has known Sarah for about a year, she first heard her talk about screencasting feedback on the #EduDuctTape podcast. If you're looking for another podcast to listen to, check it out here!

Screencastify - It's free! They run a "freemium" model, so there is a free version and a paid version. With the free version, you do have a 10 minute limit on your videos, and can only make 50 videos a month. It also has the Screencastify watermark. The advantage with Screencastify is that you can annotate on your videos.

Loom - Also free! Loom also has a freemium model. With the free version, you can make as many videos as you would like, but you only have access to 25. Loom gives you videos of unlimited time, and you can trim them. Unlike Screencastify, you cannot annotate on your videos.

Danielson Connection:

Giving feedback to students fits into Domain 2 of the Danielson Framework. Domain 2 is all about the Classroom Environment. Using screencasting to give feedback fits into almost all of the subdomains. Domain 2 has subdomains: (A) Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport, (B) Establishing a Culture of Learning, (C) Managing Classroom Procedures, (D) Managing Student Behavior, and (E) Organizing Physical Space.

By using screencasting, the teacher is able to create a stronger interaction with the student. Since both Allison and Emily have over one hundred students, it's hard to interact with all of them when giving feedback. Screencasting allows the teacher to give students individual feedback when the teacher has time to give it, and the student can watch it (and rewatch it) when needed. Once Allison and Emily practice giving screencasted feedback, this will become part of the classroom procedures, and student expectations. The students will know where to look for their feedback, and how to use that feedback to improve.

Danielson Connection: Each of our podcasts will be connected to the Danielson Framework. As educators, we use the Danielson model to guide our lesson planning. There are four domains to the Danielson model. Domain 1 includes Planning and Preparation. This domain includes subcategories such as knowledge of students, setting instructional outcomes, and designing assessments. Domain 2 includes the classroom environment. This domain includes everything in a teacher's classroom culture. Domain 3 addresses the instruction. This is the "meat" of a teacher's day to day life. What happens in a lesson and following the lesson is included in Domain 3. Finally, Domain 4 has professional responsibilities. Both Allison and Emily regularly grow their professional practice by participating in communities and attending conferences. This falls under Domain 4. Each episode we will outline how our chosen strategy connects to the Danielson Framework.
