Crossing the Line is a timely and thought-provoking exploration of police corruption and criminality in South Africa, written to move the conversation beyond academic spaces and into the everyday public sphere. It unpacks how corruption operates within policing institutions, highlighting why it is crucial for ordinary citizens to understand these dynamics given their widespread impact.

It reveals the breadth of offences involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), including corruption, abuse of power, and serious violent crimes, while also examining the complex relationships between law enforcement officials and criminal networks.

Drawing on interviews with SAPS members, policing experts, and incarcerated offenders, the book combines firsthand accounts with media and academic sources to present a layered and compelling narrative. Beyond documenting wrongdoing, it also investigates the underlying individual and institutional risk factors that enable such behaviour, and critically explores possible interventions to address and prevent police corruption.

On this episode of The Podcast, we unpack the uncomfortable truths at the heart of the book and ask the questions many are afraid to confront: how deep does police corruption really go, who is holding the system accountable, and what does this mean for everyday citizens? Join us for the conversation with Liza Grobler, the author of Crossing the Line | When Cops Become Criminals.

"Since the Zuma presidency weakened crime intelligence, violent crime surged, with murder rates rising over 75%. South Africa faces severe femicide, and most murderers evade justice. Prisons fail by perpetuating crime; harsher sentences do not help. Edwin Cameron, after visiting prisons, advocates for reform. Along with colleagues, he suggests abolishing minimum sentences, cash bail, and decriminalizing drug use to improve safety and justice." Jonathan Ball Publishers

What happens when we stop speaking about incarceration and start listening to the lives shaped within it?

In this powerful episode of Nongcebo McKenzie: The Podcast, we sit with the story behind Behind Prison Walls: Unlocking a Safer South Africa with Edwin Cameron, Rebecca Gore and Sohela Surajpal; a book that confronts the realities of the criminal justice system through lived experience, memory, and truth-telling. This is not a sensational account of prison life. It is a careful, courageous exploration of humanity under confinement.

We unpack the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of life behind prison walls: the weight of isolation, the erosion and reconstruction of identity, the impact on families left on the outside, and the systems that continue to reproduce cycles of silence and stigma. At the heart of this conversation is a question that demands reflection: who do we allow to be seen as fully human, and who do we write off?

This episode invites listeners to sit with discomfort, challenge inherited narratives about crime and punishment, and consider what justice, rehabilitation, and accountability truly mean in a society still reckoning with inequality and exclusion.

Rooted in empathy, context, and clarity, this conversation speaks to readers, activists, policy thinkers, creatives, and anyone willing to engage with stories that are often hidden in plain sight.

Award-winning former television and radio news journalist and author , Vanessa Govender, is our guest on this episode of the podcast to talk about her newest book, The Village Indian.

Take one over-the-top, bolshie, city-slicker Indian woman.
One reticent and reserved white husband.
And their three children.

Add them all to a far-flung village in the South African countryside where mixed-race families are somewhat of a rarity, and you get front-row seats to a lifestyle that is both delightful and, at times, decidedly discombobulating. Told with generous dollops of that quirky, sometimes perplexing Indian lingo that is unique to South Africans of Indian origin, and garnished with hilarity and introspection, The Village Indian is a journey of the self and an authentic celebration of identity, culture and food – while not forgetting the confusion and chaos that often go with being a South African. From run-ins with deadly snakes, to everyday encounters with chickens, to sprinklings of small-town scams and skulduggery, mischievous point scoring and attempted coups d’état, this book provides the tea for endless titillation.

And in this village, far, far away, meshugas, there is the unmistakeable magic of a tight, caring community that knows how to display its humanity.

The Village Indian is a tale for all South Africans. SOURCE: www.jacana.co.za/

Jeffrey Rakabe explores his personal journey through his book 'Led by Shepherds' on this episode of The Podcast. The book blends memoir and social critique, reflecting on masculinity, culture, and healing, while sparking dialogue on tradition, identity, and change.

Led by Shepherds begins with twelve-year-old Jeffrey Rakabe leaving his village to attend an initiation ceremony, believing it to be the key to his manhood. But the weeks-long rite of passage in the mountains is a far cry from the adventure he’d imagined. Years later, as a student, Rakabe discovers the nurturing world of books and thrives within the hush of the Johannesburg Public Library. The presence of caring women in his life, from his concerned mother and supportive partner to a librarian who feeds his intellectual curiosity with a steady supply of literature, spur Rakabe to investigate the possible links between the koma ritual, awash with misogynistic language, and gender-based violence in SA.

Part memoir, part manifesto, Led by Shepherds is a moving, vital and controversial book and Jeffrey Rakabe a brave voice for a new generation.

On this episode of Nongcebo McKenzie: The Podcast, the guest is writer and journalist Gavin Evans, author of Son of a Preacher Man. In our conversation, Gavin shares the journey behind the book, the personal stories that inspired it, and the insights he’s gathered along the way. Join me as we explore themes of family, identity, and how those early experiences continue influenced the person he’s become.

Son of a Preacher Man is a story about a loving but fraught relationship between a father and son in apartheid South Africa.

The father was Bruce Evans, a Jewish-born, evangelical Anglican clergyman who became Bishop of Port Elizabeth. His children grew up in the 1960s and ’70s in a world awash with chapter-and-verse ‘born-again’ Christianity that included ‘talking-in-tongues’, ‘divine healings’ and exorcism.

Gavin, his middle son, who narrates the tale, eventually broke with the religious beliefs he’d inherited and threw himself into the ‘struggle’ for democracy while keeping his father at arms’ length. But they reconciled shortly before Bruce’s death from motor neuron disease in 1993.

The book delves into the psyches of both men and examines how it played out in the 33 years they had together. SOURCE: LOOT.CO.ZA

She joins us a guest on this episode of The Podcast to chat about her book, Manage Your Money Like a Fucking Grownup .

''In this clear and engaging basic guide to managing your finances, Sam Beckbessinger covers topics from compound interest and inflation to "Your brain on money", negotiating a raise, and particularly local South African phenomena like "black tax". The book includes exercises and "how-to's", doesn't shy away from the psychology of money, and is empowering, humorous and helpful. The book you wish you'd had at 25, but is never too late to read. Milton Schorr is on The Podcast to chat about his book 'Addict' where he chronicles his life journey and how he has come full circle through addiction and recovery.

About the book:

‘I wanted to be who I felt I was. Broken. A wreck. Unloveable.’

There’s a moment where life happens. It’s the moment just before making a good decision, or a bad one. For Milton Schorr, just such a moment took place at the age of seventeen, when he found himself squatting on his haunches in a Cape Town flat with a heroin needle in his arm.

A friend sat with him, his thumb on the plunger, and a decision was to be made. Let the heroin slip inside, and take the road the drug offered, or turn away, and find a new life not defined by the endless quest for oblivion.

For Milton, the path was already set, as it had been at his first taste of shoplifting, porn, cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, Mandrax, LSD, Ecstasy and crack. In this memoir he details the life that led him to addiction, the wild and dark years of his drug use, his struggles to return to normality, and the reckoning with the self that ultimately led to his recovery.

Addict is a courageously honest account of Milton's life in active addiction and recovery. Today, two decades sober, he relates the pivotal points in his journey toward death, and back to life. This book is essential reading for anyone touched by addiction.

A definition that is offered for psychosis is that it is a collection of symptoms that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality. But what are the causes? Well, Dr Wambua joins us on this episode of the Podcast to discuss her research on Psychosis Among Victims of Childhood Trauma.

About Dr Nduku Wambua

According to Dr Grace Nduku Wambua, a Kenyan Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Africa Health Research Institute who graduated with a PhD in Psychiatry from UKZN on 6 May 2024, levels of resilience might explain why although there is a high incidence of psychosis among victims of childhood trauma, not all individuals exposed to it develop mental health problems when they become adults.

Psychosis refers to a collection of symptoms that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality. A clinical psychologist by training, Wambua felt it was important to understand how the processes involved in child development interact with individuals to develop resilience. Her doctoral research thus aimed to add knowledge to the field of mental health research by exploring the role played by resilience in individuals exposed to childhood trauma by comparing patients with first-episode psychosis with healthy controls.

Co-supervised by UKZN’s Psychiatry Chief Specialist and Head of Department, Associate Professor Bonga Chiliza and clinical psychologist, Dr Sanja Kilian, 14 participants who had experienced adversity in their childhood were recruited to Wambua’s study using a multiple-case study design. They were interviewed to understand how they conceptualised trauma and how they coped during and after the traumatic experience. The data was analysed using Braun and Clark’s reflexive thematic approach, the findings providing a local portrait of childhood adverse events and coping strategies, providing a qualitative understanding of the role of early experiences and their subsequent impact on perception and adaptation.

‘This study concurred with previous literature, suggesting that resilience processes are complex and contextual. In addition, consistent with the literature, the study supported the notion that the negative sequelae of childhood trauma may be prevented or moderated if appropriate support through necessary prevention and interventions was put in place at all ecological levels and provided at the right time for those confronted with adversity, especially those in vulnerable environments.' Wambua said.

‘With most knowledge on the topic having been generated in the Global North, this study in sub-Saharan Africa (specifically Kenya) adds a unique addition to the field of resilience in psychosis. Our findings emphasised the multi

Mr. Fortune Magqabi, Port Engineer ( Strategy & Solar Power Project) at The Port of Richard's Bay, is our guest on this episode of The Podcast as we unpack the port's strategy and projects.
This conversation is part of a series of conversations on the Port of Richard's Bay's strategy, initiatives and CSI projects.

The Port of Richards Bay is divided into three precincts, namely: South Dunes, Bayview and Newark precincts, which focus on different services outlined below. Driven by the Port Development Framework Plan (PDFP), which is updated bi-annually, further expansion will be possible alongside the Mhlathuze River floodplain towards the N2 highway.

While numerous mining and other products move through the port, coal remains the single largest export commodity in terms of volumes and is the second largest foreign exchange earner for the South African economy after gold. Other commodities handled at the port include: Forest products, aluminium, bagged cargo, granite, minimum containers, heavy lifts, ferro alloys, andalusite, chrome, clay, copper concentrates, fertilizer, magnetite, rock phosphate, rutile, titanium slag, woodchips, zircon, alumina, coking coal, pet coke, potash, salt, sulphur, urea, phosphoric acid, chemical and chemical products, etc. the Port of Richards Bay is South Africa’s leading port in terms of cargo volumes handled. It is also the biggest port in size, covering an area of approximately 3 773 ha, a large portion of which is still available for further expansion.

Among Smart Port initiatives, the Port of Richards Bay has an Integrated Port Management System (IPMS) and Joint Operations Centre, both designed to create end-to-end visibility throughout the logistics chain, enabling port users to track their cargo from port of origin to destination. the IPMS is a holistic web-based system that integrates Marine Operations, Terminal Operations, Systems and Reporting on a single platform. This system provides users with access to a wide range of near real-time operational information that is accessed centrally 24/7, on which to base sound decisions that will improve port efficiency and performance.

Acclaimed author, social entrepreneur, and cultural activist Sikhumbuzo ‘Skhu’ Thabede announces his entrance into the music industry
with his debut album IMVUNGE YAKWANTU, which translates to "African Rhythmic Chants."
The album features 13 tracks and showcases collaborations with renowned artists like Dr. Tu Nokwe, soulful vocalists Qiniso Nsele, and Zitulele, among others. Notably, Thabede also features his father on one of the tracks. The album blends traditional African rhythms with modern melodies. To bring his vision to life, Thabede enlisted the talents of Themba Ndaba, a member of Mango Groove, and a skilled saxophonist, pianist, and penny whistle soloist.
Joining him were Zipho Sigcau, also known as DJ Teddy, and Celza “Inja Ka-Gogo,” who produced the album. All songs were written by Thabede, with contributions from the featured artists, creating an authentic narrative rooted in his upbringing and life experiences.
“The album is like an unknown journey—imagine walking on an endless road, but the music carries you forward, even though you don’t know the destination,” Thabede says.
Deeply rooted in his Zulu culture and the traditions of Mbaqanga, Thabede’s music fuses authentic African sounds with contemporary beats, focusing heavily on Afro-soul while incorporating elements of Maskandi, Amahubo, Incekeza, and Isicathamiya. His music showcases the rich tapestry of Zulu musical heritage.
Thabede’s African soul sound is deeply inspired by Mbaqanga, a traditional Zulu style that has been around for decades. His melodies reflect the vibrant rhythms of everyday life in rural South Africa, drawing inspiration from his upbringing in Thaleni, Nkandla. Raised in a musical household, where his parents were longstanding choir members and his uncles
enjoyed various musical genres, Thabede’s sound is imbued with familial and cultural influences.

The planned release date for the full album is 25 October 2024.

On this episode , Ntokozo Nkosi who is the Deputy Director Services to Older Persons at the Department of Social Development in KwaZulu Natal, shares insights on The Current Status on Elderly Abuse as we head to World Alzheimer's Day on 21 September 2024 .

This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation. Part 2 focuses on the Emotional Effects of Abuse on the Elderly.

Alzheimer's in the Elderly
Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia and usually affects people over the age of 65. Because of their memory impairment and inability to communicate, patients with Alzheimer's are especially vulnerable to abuse. Aggressors may also target these patients because they are more easily confused, and so may not even realize that they are being ridiculed or abused.

Remember in South Africa, elder abuse is a crime.

“The Hawks are South Africa’s elite crime-fighting force who have put some of our worst criminals behind bars. Investigative journalist, Graham Coetzer, gives us a rare glimpse into this world. Each chapter looks at a different case and explores what happened – and for once, it’s good news! This is a celebration of the Hawks’ most impressive successes.

From busting the crooks behind the biggest cash heist in South African history to ending the reign of terror by a zama zama kingpin who hijacked a whole mine. Among their chilling investigations recounted here is the hunt for ruthless human traffickers and a cross-country race to apprehend a serial killer. This is an ode to the hard work and dedication of the best of our police service.

Devi Sankaree Govender said of Hunting with the Hawks – “Rare insight into the committed minds of the many who are holding up our criminal justice system, proving that all is not lost.”

Graham Coetzer is an award-winning South African investigative journalist and television producer. His work has taken him on many adventures across Africa. He won the National Press Club Journalist of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the prestigious Taco Kuiper Award, as well as the Global Shining Light Award. He lives in Pretoria.”

Dr Nechama Brodie is a guest on this episode of the podcast with Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie , talking about her latest book 'Domestic Terror: Intimate partner violence in South Africa'.

'Domestic Terror is a powerful book that sheds light on the plight of women who face domestic violence and the harsh realities they encounter when trying to protect themselves. In South Africa, intimate partner violence is the leading cause of
female homicide and often, the warning signs are ignored. The book delves into the stories of women who took matters into their own hands, refusing to wait until they were attacked to defend themselves. Despite being driven to extreme measures, these women are met with a lack of empathy and understanding from the very institutions that are supposed to protect them. Through poignant case studies, the author exposes the limitations of our systems and challenges us to rethink our approach to domestic violence.' SOURCE: Exclusive Books

Dr Nechama Brodie has worked as a multi-media journalist, editor, producer and publisher for more than twenty-five years. During this time she has dodged the secret police in Burma, explored tunnels underneath Johannesburg, gotten dusty at rock festivals, and reported on the myth of ‘white genocide’ in South Africa.

The guest on this episode of The Podcast with Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie   is Moshitadi Lehlomela. She is the author of The Girl Who Survived Her Mother: Navigating and Healing the Mother Wound.

"There is a lot of talk in society about bad fathers. Fathers being neglectful or abusive or abandoning their families. Much less is spoken about mothers. There is a shroud of secrecy around mothers' parental failures and targeted abuse of their children. It is taboo to question a mother's love. Nonetheless, the mother wound has become a buzz phrase amongst millennials grappling with what to say on Mothers' Day on social media or how not to feel jealous of the nurture others enjoy from their mothers.

Moshitadi is a mother wound recovery coach. In The Girl Who Survived Her Mother, she details the years of her torturous relationship with her mother, maps the intergenerational nature of the trauma in her family, and reveals how she was finally able to begin her journey of healing. Today she helps clients around the world face their most shameful question -- how do I love myself when the person who carried me and gave birth to me cannot?" Source: NB Publishers

On this episode of The Podcast Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie is in conversation with Ndumi Hadebe.

"Ndumi is a published author of Handle Black Tax Like a Pro – Setting Boundaries,
Improving Relationships and Achieving Freedom, a book about how to strike a healthy balance of helping family or relatives while allowing space for personal financial goals - through the practice of healthy boundaries.
The more Time-Money-Energy she invested working on this book, the more she realised that boundaries are the basis of self-preservation and self-love; and concluded that it’s impossible to lead yourself in the direction of your vision or goals without a clear assertion of boundaries in the various areas of life. It finally clicked…
- Peace is impossible without boundaries,
- Productivity is impossible without boundaries,
- Potential cannot be realised without healthy boundaries,
And most importantly, authenticity and meaningful contribution to society cannot be achieved without boundaries.
She has more than a decade of corporate experience and another as an entrepreneur – consulting in as a capacity development expert for world renowned brands such Deloitte, Ernst &Young, Nordex SA, Sasfin Bank, University of Johannesburg and Bureau Veritas Zambia. On this episode of The Podcast Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie sits down with Dr Sipho Sithole ; the author of Maye! Maye! The History & Heritage of the Kwa Mai Mai Market.

"Kwa Mai Mai is the embodiment of everything Johannesburg is meant to be – the City of Gold, a place where dreams deferred come true. It is a constellation of people’s cultures, imbued with beautiful memories of life in villages left behind but cherished by those who refuse to forget.

The book explores how the keepers of cultural memory can use it not only to survive but to invoke the entrepreneurial and creative spirit buried deep within their souls. Moreover, it builds on the assumption that if cultural memory can be stored and retrieved through artefacts, sites, ceremonies, myths and rituals, then Kwa Mai Mai is the place where these elements converge in inspiring displays of craftsmanship, worship and healing.

Yet, Kwa Mai Mai has a darker side. It is a place of painful memories and ignored pleas – where its members are in a constant battle to be acknowledged by the city that created it.

This book reveals how the subversive, socio-economic order that epitomised Kwa Mai Mai turned class theory upside down. In an interesting reversal of roles, the Kwa Mai Mai community, who used to be a migrant working class, wrested the power and control over the means of production from the dominant class. Through their heightened cultural consciousness, this marginalised migrant community has reimagined new economic realities and possibilities, forever distancing themselves from the painful, repressive past." On this episode of The Podcast  Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie   is in conversation with poet Professor Evangeline Bonisiwe Zungu;  a respected author and academic.  Her recent book is entitled 'Zulu Names, Polygyny and Gender Politics in Traditional Societies'.

"This book provides illuminating insight into Zulu polygynous families. It examines how Zulu anthroponyms used in respect of the living-dead reflect social behaviour patterns within homesteads. Names become social outlets for sentiments of hostility and ill-feelings caused by quarrels between co-wives and in-laws. Zungu considers the challenge of plural marriages and the use of witchcraft to fight for the husband's love and affection. Names are also used to reflect and ward off evil spirits, which may cause illness and death. Despite the influence of globalisation and modernity, anthroponyms reflect mystical arts and occultism (whether real or imagined) in traditional societies, and they are effective oral strategies between family members and/or community members."  Source : Perlego

On this episode of The Podcast Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie is in conversation with Terry Angelos author of the book White Trash - My Year As A High-Class Call Girl .

"Raised during the Rhodesian bush war in the 1970s and then immigrating to South Africa at the age of 11, Terry is shaped by a white culture that is racist, unstable, privileged and deeply divided. Her childhood appears idyllic but it is tragically bizarre as the adults around her insist on living their version of normality while the world falls apart.
The first time Terry Angelos has sex with a black man, she's paid £300, working as a 19 year-old call girl in London. Back home it's 1989 and South Africa is being torn apart by political unrest. It's a year before Nelson Mandela is released and 5 years before the country's first democratic election.

White Trash is a remarkable memoir told in vivid detail, laced with dark humour and savage honesty as the narrator unravels what it means to be a white African and what draws her into the brutal world of teenage sex work. But ultimately it's a story about finding a shard of light in the darkness, in a heroic quest to reinvent the self."

Thando Pato is a guest on this episode of The Podcast.  She shares with   Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie   her journey to sobriety which is the subject of her book 'On the Rocks Memoir of a High- Functioning Alcoholic'

"Thirty-nine-year-old Thando is living in total denial about her drinking. On the surface her life looks aspirational – great job, apartment, snazzy car. But behind the façade she harbours a dark and shameful secret – she can’t control her drinking. To the outside world she looks like a woman who loves having fun, always with a glass of wine in her hand. But alone at home, she’s knocking back a bottle or two a night under the guise of ‘unwinding’. It’s not until she takes a year long break from booze, that she's forced to confront her crippling anxiety and  depression, which now have taken a toll on her high-powered career. She returns to drinking thinking that she can moderate until life takes a cruel twist and she’s diagnosed with breast cancer. For the next two years she chronicles her addiction as she spirals out of control before calling it quits just before lockdown in March 2020. The road to recovery is brutal as she appears to be the only one sober in the midst of a pandemic." NB Publishers

Author Brent Meersman is a guest on this episode of The Podcast. He shares with Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie his experience of growing up with a mother who has schizophrenia, which is the subject of his book 'A Childhood Made Up - Living With My Mother's Madness'.

"My mother's life was a constant battle with a tragic, debilitating mental condition, hardly understood in South Africa in the 1970s, even less so when she was first hospitalised in the 1950s in Valkenberg. She tried to have a normal life and, against her doctors' advice, proceeded to marry and have children, me being the youngest.

There are possibly over 250,000 people with schizophrenia in South Africa. The number of family members affected is a great multiple of these. Yet stigma and silence pervade.

A handful of people suffering from schizophrenia have penned their own stories, even fewer tell the story of growing up with a schizophrenic parent because of the difficulty of coming to terms with what is a very confusing experience for a child.

I was also motivated by my deep irritation with how schizophrenia is more often than not grossly misrepresented in books and films, even highly acclaimed ones. Having had long discussions with my mother in her later life, I was able to draw on this intimate account of her psychotic experiences. I also had her letters and diaries and her paintings. She was a talented artist.

Faced by such a daunting task, I first wrote A Childhood Made Up as a novel, referring to myself in the third person. It was an extremely fast-paced, almost manic book and darkly comic; someone compared its style to Kurt Vonnegut. I'm rather fond of it. Having completed the novel version, I was ready to confront my past more directly.

The role of a writer in society is to articulate things we have all felt and done but which we have not articulated yet for ourselves or would prefer not to own up to in public.

I learnt a great deal writing this book and I wish such a memoir had been available to me when I was growing up struggling to understand my mother and what was happening to our family.

We are all a little bit mad and there is much reason and truth in madness too. As psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas puts it: schizophrenia can be seen "as an understandable way of responding to our precariousness in a highly unpredictable world".

I hope this book does much more than entertain, move and sometimes amuse readers, but is a testament to a brave and talented and often misunderstood woman, my mother."

This episode of the podcast is a conversation with Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu, legendary musicians and lifelong friends.

"Johnny Clegg, (born June 7, 1953, Bacup, near Rochdale, England—died July 16, 2019, Johannesburg, South Africa), South African musician, popularly called the “White Zulu,” whose innovative, ethnically integrated musical collaborations in the late 20th century constituted a powerful statement against apartheid, the enforced separation of Black and white peoples and traditions in South Africa.

Clegg subsequently developed a friendship with Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu migrant worker and street musician in Johannesburg. From Mchunu, Clegg learned the Zulu language and traditional music, as well as the vibrant dance styles that later became a regular feature of his performances. Clegg and Mchunu performed as a duo for a few years before they assembled a band called Juluka (Zulu: “Sweat”). In 1979 Juluka released Universal Men, an album that spoke to the divided lives of the migrant workers who reside and work in the city, separated from their families and homes. Stylistically, the album was a fusion of Zulu music and various European traditions. Later albums were similarly blended. Ubuhle Bemvelo (1982), the group’s third album, was performed entirely in Zulu.

During the early 1980s Juluka gained not only a strong local audience but also an enthusiastic international following, particularly in France, where Clegg fondly was labeled “Le Zoulou Blanc” (“The White Zulu”). Juluka’s success was an especially significant achievement during the apartheid era, when music that was performed by mixed (Black and white) bands or that blended Black and white styles was barred from South African radio. Juluka’s music, then, circulated primarily through live performances, which, particularly in South Africa, often led to encounters with the police. The group’s appeal indeed lay as much in its innovative and engaging music as in the political statement—both explicit and implicit—it made against apartheid, a system that was increasingly condemned by the international community." The group recorded more than 40 successful albums that sold over four million copies. They also won numerous South African Music Awards (SAMA) in the category of best Mbhaqanga Album, as well as a Lifetime Achievement award. For this, among other reasons, it is fitting that they be hailed as the Kings of Mbhaqanga." *By Nancy Legodi, Acting Journalist, Department of Institutional Advancement UNISA

It's the biggest miracle on earth, the computer, the network that creates wars, ends wars and drives the world – and yet we pay it so little attention." Dr Lihle Qulu
