Sir Ronald Cohen is an Egyptian-born British businessman, who fled his birthplace with his family in 1957, following the Suez Crisis, with only £10 to their name. Despite his family’s economic struggles, Sir Ronald’s hard work saw him win a scholarship to Oxford and then attend Harvard Business School.
Referred to by the British press as ‘the father of British venture capital’ and ‘the father of social investment’, he is now leading the Impact Revolution – a movement seeking to achieve real social and environmental change. With an impressive background in management consulting, venture capitalism, and social investments, Sir Ronald has a compelling perspective on how to reshape capitalism.
We spoke about his Harvard Business School research into impact weighted accounts. This research measured the environmental impacts from the operations of 3,000 companies and found 450 of them create more damage than profit, 1,000 create damage equivalent to 25% of their profit, and 2/3 create damage less than 25% of their profit. Sir Ronald believes changing the world and making a profit go hand in hand. He says investors should put money into the hands of those who do good and do well at the same time.

"There are so many new platforms that are popping up these days. The newest brokers focus on US stocks. So now we've got a whole bunch of zero brokerage, US trading platforms out there. You might have seen eToro, we've got Stake, which launched a couple of years ago - that was the first in Australia to launch zero brokerage trading. So that's very low fees and you can invest smaller amounts with US stocks. They tend to be focused towards that kind of younger audience, that kind of Wall StreetBets audience that we see in the US. The Robin Hood investors where it's very minimalist design offering quick trades on your phone. They tend to be optimised for mobile, and that's the angle they tend to push. You want to trade GameStop or, or Facebook or whatever, you can make a quick trade so fast."

Ethical investing is becoming a key consideration for many investors. Claude Walker is the founder of A Rich Life and writes the Ethical Equities column for this publication. He had the good fortune of starting young as an investor, and was the Research Analyst and then Advisor of Motley Fool Hidden Gems from 2014 – 2018, during which period his recommendations more than doubled the market return. He considers the impact his investments have on society and the environment, not just the expected financial return. In the past few years he has enjoyed most success with medium-sized high-growth tech stocks on the ASX, but has continued to invest heavily in smaller, unloved and ignored micro-caps, because the market is much less efficient at the small end.We talk about his investing philosophy and shares a couple ideas about companies that he has invested in.IMPORTANT – Please remember these podcasts are produced to provide information and education and they are not designed to provide financial advice nor are they a recommendation to buy shares in the companies featured. Tony Kynaston is arguably one of Australia’s best private investors. Tony is a former senior executive of companies like Coles and Shell. He started investing in the stock market 30 years ago and developed a checklist methodology to become a professional investor. He's joined me in this episode to talk about Quality at Value and the podcast that he's created with his friend Cameron Reilly - the QAV PodcastOn this podcast Tony teaches Cameron how to use the checklist to become a successful investor. It’s like a weekly university class on value investing from a full-time investor with a private portfolio bigger than some funds (according to his stockbroker). Following are some questions that he believes that not only should be thought about, but written down before any share purchase:
Write down your thoughts when you’re researching a company and you will become a much better informed investor and you’ll have much higher levels of conviction. It will mean that when share prices inevitably fall you can judge whether something is fundamentally wrong with the business or the fall is due to other factors.

Steve Mabb is a successful businessman turned full-time investor and now an ASA company monitor. In this episode he talks about how he uses ASX-listed ETFs to gain exposure to companies that aren’t listed directly on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).
Our stock market is currently dominated by miners and banks. Great companies for sure — but unlikely to exceed the pace of growth of some of the “new economy” companies listed overseas in the years and decades ahead. As an Australian investor who wants exposure to international technology and real diversification, Steve describes the ETFs that he has invested in to widen his international exposure.

When we think of shares we generally think of single companies that are listed on the stock market. This is not always the case. Some shares allow you to access investments that are generally beyond the scope of individual investors. Such is the case with Bailador – ASX:BTI, a specialist investor in growth stage information technology businesses.
David Kirk is the former Chief Executive of ASX-listed Fairfax Media Ltd., where he led the successful investment into a number of internet businesses including Fairfax’s acquisition of Trade Me and Stayz. He has been a growth stage investor in technology-based businesses since 1999. He's Chairman of ASX-listed Trade Me Group Limited and Kathmandu Holdings Limited, Chairman of Forsyth Barr Limited, a privately-owned New Zealand investment firm, and a Director of each of DocsCorp, SMI, Viostream and Rezdy.
Prior to entering the corporate world, David enjoyed a highly successful rugby career, captaining the All Blacks to win the World Cup in 1987.
