On 28 October, the PCTC, in collaboration with EFAC Vic/Tas, hosted a webinar to consider how to re-open churches for physical gatherings, and what we might learn from the COVID-19 experience for church life into the future. The speakers were Phil Meulman (Senior Minister, Glen Waverley Anglican Church), Antony Barraclough (Senior Minister, St Matthew’s, West Pymble, Sydney), Megan Curlis-Gibson (Senior Minister, Deep Creek Anglican Church), John Forsyth (Vicar, St Jude’s Church, Carlton) and Peter Roennfeldt, author of ‘If your church is closed … be the church’. It was an insightful conversation and our prayer is that church leaders might continue this conversation together as restrictions continue to ease and we move into the future under God.

Andy Judd joined us in October 2020 to help us think through the challenging issue of Violence in the Old Testament. Whether you were able to join us then or not, we’re pleased to make the recording of the session available. The session goes for an hour, and includes some time for a few searching questions which we’re sure you’ll find helpful. Andy has also made available for us a 16 minute version of the same material if you’d like a shorter option.

Andy Judd from Ridley College goes through five approaches to the violence of the Old Testament in books like Joshua and Judges:

  1. Reject the violent texts
  2. Resign ourselves to mystery
  3. Re-interpret the violence as hyperbole
  4. Insist on God’s right to judge the world
  5. Re-contextualise the violence as part of the bigger story

Tracy Lauersen shares on the issues of evil and suffering.

It’s a fair question. How can God allow organisations like ISIS, who do such awful things, to go from success to success as they sweep across countries, bringing their violence, bloodshed, kidnappings, sexual enslavement and all manner of awful crimes?
