The tune known as ‘Weber’s last musical thought’ is not by Carl Maria von Weber, but it is a curious piece of cultural history. With visits to Kierkegaard, E.A. Poe, and Debussy, and a rendition of Erik Satie’s […]

In this short recital, I play the two works by Emanuel Bach that I discussed in episode 14 of the podcast Voorbij de oren: the fantasia Bachs Empfindungen and the rondo Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere. This music was originally intended for the clavichord – “this solitary, melancholy and inexpressibly sweet instrument”, according to the […]

Most of the subject matter is discussed also in the blog essays Bach on the piano and Arioso dolente. With spoken short introductions in Dutch. Not on Spotify. Bach’s […]

Muziek-/geluidsfragmenten:

  • Casablanca (film). Ingrid Bergman, Dooley Wilson, Max Steiner. Warner Brothers 1943.
  • O. Respighi, Impressioni brasiliane. Antal Dorati, London Symphony Orchestra. Fontana 1959?
  • J.S. Bach, Cantate BWV 158 Der Friede sei mit dir. Stephan MacLeod, Gli Angeli Genève. Cantatas for Bass. Claves 2022.

NEDERLANDS About Creating a Classical Music Podcast Listen to the audio version. With piano music by Lodewijk Muns. For a number of years, I have been posting blog essays on this website – the oldest on a musical topic dates back to 2014. Often, and increasingly, these turned out too long and too academic for […]

NEDERLANDS This is an excerpt from my article Purring and Whirring: Music of the Spinning Wheel. The subject suggested itself to me many years ago when I was sorting through a large quantity of 19th century music prints. It was the remains of the stock of a music shop, that had lain forgotten in an […]

ENGLISH Dit is een verkorte versie van mijn artikel Purring and Whirring: Music of the Spinning Wheel Het onderwerp kwam vele jaren geleden bij me op, toen ik als student-assistent een grote hoeveelheid 19e-eeuwse muziekdrukken moest sorteren.

Tell me what you think, frankly. A satirical operetta about the mad world in which we’re living. Title: Catastrophe, exclamation mark. – I’m intrigued by the incongruity of ‘catastrophe’ and ‘operetta’. Go on. There is such a lack of good satire. Particularly in the world of classical music. Classical-contemporary. Classical music culture is conservative, on […]

Playing the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue The odd beginning of Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903: scales up and down, brusque and brisk. Many pianists emphasize the brusqueness and briskness. Alternatively one may bring out the harmonic implications, the chords or arpeggio’s hidden in the scales. Every scale is an arpeggio, […]

Elitism Classical music has been considered the mainstay of ‘western’ musical culture from around 1770 till 1970. Its institutions – orchestras, opera houses, choirs, conservatoires – were mainly supported, albeit often poorly, by a culturally ambitious upper middle class, which since the late 18th century increasingly took over the role of cultural patronage from the […]

In 5,000,000,000 years, the sun will burn out. Considerably earlier, I suppose, our planet will have ceased to exist. It is still an unimaginable time span, and most likely beyond the existence of anything that we might recognize as ‘human’. So, no need to worry. Intuitively and irrationally, the thought sometimes does worry me. It’s […]

The Arioso dolente from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 110 (which I discussed earlier) is an example of instrumental music that imitates a vocal genre. It is the pianist’s task to conjure an imaginary vocal-dramatic, but wordless monologue, the expression of the thoughts and feelings of some nameless and otherwise unidentified human being. Presumably these thoughts […]

Music Representing Music The Arioso dolente (Klagender Gesang) from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 110 in A-flat major represents what the words written over it indicate: a mournful song, or vocal lament. The listener will easily recognize its quasi-vocal qualities without help from the score. (Many have noted the arioso’s similarity with Es ist vollbracht from […]

Notes on Music and Film (5) Silent Film and Soundtrack In 1932, two young and newlywed Polish artists produced a short silent film titled Europa. Music, particularly instrumental music, is “a speech in sounds (Klangrede) or language in tones (Tonsprache)”. With that often quoted, but somewhat ambiguous phrase, Johann Mattheson wanted to point out that music can make sense without a text; and particularly, it can and should evoke a particular emotion in the listeners. He elaborated this idea of […]

Music Remembered – in Music (4) Songs With Words About Songs Without Them The song without words (Lied ohne Worte), as I’ve written before, is a bit of a paradox.
