In this episode, Susan speaks with Dr. Nada Shabout, Professor of Art History in UNT's College of Visual Arts & Design. Their discussion of modern art focuses on the Arab world, beginning with a historical overview. Professor Shabout explains how 20th century artists started to express themselves in new ways as the colonial era gave way to postcolonialism. She also sheds some light on why audiences outside the Arab world (including art historians) have struggled to understand these artists in their proper context. Finally, Dr. Shabout describes her efforts to document the works that went missing from Iraq's Museum of Modern Art after the fall of Baghdad in 2003.
