We consider what the current landscape looks like, what this means for tech platforms operating in the market - and ask whether laws originally brought in to tackle terrorism, are now being exploited to stifle free speech in India.

We explore the controversy around a BBC Documentary deemed to be critical of the Indian Prime Minister and the subsequent removal orders sent by the Indian government to tech companies. Unpacking the piece of legislation used to justify these orders - the 2021 IT Rules - we highlight concerns among civil society actors around how these digital laws are impacting human rights such as freedom of speech and the right to privacy.
