The death of George Floyd lit a fire under the conversation about the health of the black community. She believes the history and understanding of what we know about health to be tied to the same narrative of these things have been made invisible. The AMA has been on the front lines of health equity since 1989. It's important to understand that equity is about the process and the things that happen in the process before the outcome. People have to be more aware of what equity is.
In this episode, you will learn:
1. Social determinants of health and health equity
2. The death of George Floyd and its impact on perceptions of health and health care
3. The AMA's work on anti-racism and health equity

Patient safety is a serious global public health concern. There is a 1 in a million chance of a person being harmed while traveling by plane. In comparison, there is a 1 in 300 chance of a patient being harmed during health care. Industries with a perceived higher risk such as the aviation and nuclear industries have a much better safety record than health care. (WHO)

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Allison Young. Dr. Young is a board-certified psychiatrist and works with people who have a wide range of mental health issues. She is also into lifestyle medicine and thinks that it's important to differentiate between anxiety that is clinical and anxiety that is not. Clinical anxiety is defined by a specific constellation of symptoms and it impacts your functioning for six months or more.
I see a lot of people in the wellness world who try to manage their anxiety on their own. Still, it's important to know if we're talking about subclinical anxiety or clinical anxiety.

Dr. Andrea Willis is the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee. I am a doctor, and I have seen firsthand the effects of systemic racism on people's health. It is a problem that we have to address as a system, and it starts with looking at the data and bringing in the right stakeholders. We need to be intentional about our message and make sure that we are representing the community in a way that is respectful and empowering. We also need to make sure that we are providing the right resources and support to people in order to level the playing field.

"I would say that as a doctor, nurse, or public health professional, you can use your powerful and trusted voice, get involved, and make sure this happens."Marisol Gonzalez is an environmental health researcher who has worked as a medical humanitarian aid worker. She is passionate about climate change and health and works to raise awareness about the health impacts of climate change.
About Marisol Yglesias-Gonzalez
I am an environmental health researcher and I study how climate change affects health. Climate change has direct and indirect effects on health, and these effects can be magnified by social factors like poverty, age, and gender. Climate change is the greatest global health threat of the 21st century.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. Climate change has direct effects on human health, including extreme weather events.
2. Climate change can indirectly impact health through changes in water quality, air pollution, and disease vectors.
3. Social determinants of health play a role in how vulnerable individuals and populations are to climate change.
Chapter Summaries:
1) Marisol Gonzalez, an environmental health researcher, is a guest on the Healthy Project podcast. Today, she's going to talk about a topic that's important within the public health field.
2) Before the talk on climate change and health, the speaker talks about her background in environmental health and her work experience as a medical humanitarian aid worker. She's introverted and she's not a morning person, but she loves the opportunity to speak about the topic. She believes there is a lot of pessimism around the topic and she wants to be able to bring the evidence and motivate people.
3) As a student ten years ago, he was trying to establish the connection between climate change and health. He found out that both direct and indirect effects of climate change have an impact on human health. For one person, it being hotter, sooner, or hotter than usual may be uncomfortable. But for someone else, that heat wave or that temperature change may be significant for their health.
4) The social dimension of climate change makes the difference between rich and poor countries. People living in poverty, marginalized groups, people with disabilities, older adults, women, and young children bear the greater burden of risk in all regions. Those who live in poverty have fewer opportunities generally in life and are vulnerable to basically everything.
5) Marisol is an environmental health researcher. She believes that climate change is affecting everyone and we need to take action to adapt to it and mitigate fueling the climate crisis. Health professionals need to educate their patients on the health impacts of climate change. Health systems have a big carbon footprint. The US committed to decarbonizing the health sector. Elberta was the first case to put a name to climate change on the death certificate. The more people speak up about it, the more we have a podcast about the subject. We need to start bridging the fields of environment and health and engage more clinicians.
6) Healthcare sector is creating a lot of greenhouse gases. Most of the emissions come from procurement and the supply chain.

A person's health literacy can be defined as their ability to access, understand, appraise, and apply health information. A high level of health literacy is positively correlated with better health outcomes. Despite this, nearly half of the American and European population has low health literacy. The health literacy levels of socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are the lowest, suggesting health disparities are partly due to differences in health literacy levels. In order to improve health-related outcomes among socioeconomically disadvantaged people, it is essential to understand what conditions health literacy interventions can be applied under.

You started the new year motivated to make a change in your life. Then some things changed. The motivation was gone and your goals were right behind it. Just because you didn't finish strong doesn't mean you can't finish at all. Maybe you just had the wrong motivation.
In this episode, I speak with Jake Trione, Coach and owner of TriFitness Gym. We talk about why most people don't reach the goals they set at the beginning of the year, intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, and what he has learned from 90-year-old clients about life and health.

"All you need is Love." Those may be popular lyrics to a Beatles song, but there is a lot of truth to it! A recent Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation survey of 1,327 front-line health care workers in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that medical burnout has reached epidemic proportions. An overwhelming 55% of front-line health care workers reported burnout (defined as mental and physical exhaustion from chronic workplace stress), with the highest rate (69%) among our youngest staff — those ages 18 to 29. That same age group also reported the highest negative impact of the pandemic on their mental health (75%), though a majority of all health care workers (62%) reported some mental health repercussions.
Sometimes healthcare workers become such devoted to their profession that they become lost in it. When something bad happens to that core, it has devastating consequences. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Naomi Jean-Baptiste MD, mother, wife, board-certified emergency medicine physician, frontline provider, and founder of Hope4Med a company the provides a convenient, private, and confidential outlet that passes no judgment and helps guide the healthcare worker through times of struggle.

There are many differences in health and wellness goals that exist between people of different socio-economic backgrounds. Health coaching is a process that supports someone's health and wellness goals, but not everyone gets the same amount of support due to varying levels of income, education, access to resources (e.g. healthy food), etc. And this lack of support can result in poorer health outcomes for those who are already disadvantaged.
In this episode, I speak with Melissa Arthur. We talk about her experience working as a health coach in a primary care setting.

The U.S. healthcare system is shifting to an incentive structure where healthcare providers are rewarded for better care, not more care. This transition from fee-for-service to value-based care is changing how patients are cared for and how providers are measured and compensated for performance. Health equity means assuring that everyone has the possibility to be as healthy as possible. Yet, factors outside of a person’s control, such as discrimination and lack of resources, can prevent them from achieving their best health. Working toward health equity is a way to correct or challenge these factors.
In this episode, I have a great talk with Dr. Yogesh Shah MD, Chief Medical Officer of Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Dr. Shah breaks down what health equity means and how Social Determinants of Health play a huge role, how people of color are affected, and what we can do to make sure we are going to where the people are to help them the best.

Health equity has been the topic of discussion lately. Recent data have focused on disparities through another lens, especially the correlation between where people live (i.e., ZIP code) and their quality and length of life. In many cities across America, average life expectancies in specific communities are 20-30 years shorter than those insignificant miles away. Health disparities are founded on a complicated interaction of racial, economic, educational, and other social factors. For example, breastfeeding rates in the United States vary significantly depending on the race and income of the mother.
On this episode of The Healthy Project Podcast, I have a great discussion with Pat Ford, Physical Therapist and founder of the nonprofit organization, Project Onyx we discuss, Social Determinant of Health and how your area code plays a role in access to quality care, Representation of black and brown healthcare professionals and the origins and mission of Project Onyx.
