It’s not just about who’s ready now — it’s about who’s building for what’s next.

This week on Krush Performance, Jeff kicks off the NHL season and breaks down what’s shaping up to be one of the most intriguing years in recent memory. From breakout players to defining storylines, the Krusher shares his top NHL picks and the performance factors that could shape the standings.

But hockey fans aren’t the only ones who need to be paying attention — baseball players, coaches, and parents, this episode is for you too.

As rinks fill up and diamonds quiet down, Jeff shifts gears to share his top three performance priorities for the baseball off-season — the time of year where real development happens.

On the Hockey Side

  • The Krusher’s Top 5 Players to Watch: Emerging stars, comeback stories, and veterans still pushing the edge of performance.
  • Storylines to Follow:
    • Can Edmonton finally finish what it started?
    • Which teams truly understand “recovery as a weapon?”
    • How off-ice science and training are redefining durability in a long season.
  • Performance Takeaway: What baseball can learn from how hockey players manage 82 games of chaos and recovery.

On the Baseball Side

As the season ends, the smart teams are just getting started. Jeff lays out the three biggest things baseball players, parents, and coaches need to focus on this off-season:

1. Understanding the Landscape

  • Here is what we know about the injury trends in the game & here’s why understanding this can be a weapon in your development.
  • Jeff breaks down MLB’s Report on Pitchers Injuries for you & he tells you why he is so proud of MLB’s latest move – the Very First Amateur Recovery Period & why this could be a game changer not just for baseball but for SPORT in General.

2. Rebuild Before You Reload

  • Take stock of movement quality, recovery, and nagging issues before jumping into heavy training.
  • The off-season isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing smarter.

3. Plan the Process

  • Map out a structured off-season program with clear priorities: strength, mobility, skill development, and rest.
  • Use this time to set up your in-season readiness.

The Krush Perspective
Whether it’s a puck drop or a training block, the same rules apply:

“Great seasons don’t start on the ice or the diamond — they start with preparation, recovery, and mindset.”

Its all part of the planning process when you are Creating Coachable Players.

Welcome to Season 20 of Krush Performance.

This season we will be tracking down some of the past Krush Guests to revisit some of our favorite conversations & to catch up on what they have been up to since being on the show.

And we’ll be paying tribute to the Krush Guests who are no longer with us revisiting our conversations and the knowledge they shared with us.

If you are a coach, parent, athlete or if you work in an organization you need to hear this conversation…

This week with the Passing of Hockey Legend, Ken Dryden I wanted to go back to one of my top Krush Conversations from 2019 as we spoke with Ken about his Book, “Scotty: A Hockey Life Like no Other.”

If you are a coach, parent, athlete or if you work in an organization you need to hear this conversation as Ken shares insights on how Scotty Bowman thought, operated and approached the game of Hockey. The winningest coach in Hockey history and one of the greatest coaches in all of sport with more games and more cups than anyone else there is SO much to learn.

I am very honoured to begin our 20th season with a tribute to the late and great Ken Dryden.

Jeff

KEN DRYDEN was a goalie for the Montreal Canadiens in the 1970s, during which time the team won six Stanley Cups. He also played for Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series. He has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. He is a former federal member of parliament and cabinet minister, and is the author of seven books, including The Game, Home Game (with Roy MacGregor), Game Change and Scotty: A Hockey Life Like no Other.”

What drives us to keep going? To keep putting in the hard time needed to getting better and even master a skill or conquer a goal and objective?

For decades researchers have been working to better understand:

· What motivates people to do what they do?

· How do top performers stay motivated?

· How can you motivate the people around you?

And why is there such a gap between what we know about motivation and how businesses, teams and organizations operate?

This week on the Krush Summer Series we go back to a great conversation with Author and Speaker, Dan Pink as we discuss his bestselling book “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”

There are a number of factors that drive motivation.

There is Internal drive that comes from within the individual and then there is External drive which is greatly driven by the people around you and the environment you are in.

Motivation and feeding motivation is a big piece of the performance puzzle when you are Creating Coachable Players.

Talent, our understanding of talent and how we apply it within the developmental pathways, from grassroots right up to our professional, both compels and limits athletic achievement.

Would we be better off ignoring talent all together?

This week, we wrap up our year long investigation into the incredible complexity of talent development and talent ID in sport with Krush Hall of Famer, Sport Scientist, Dr. Joe Baker.

How do genetics and environment influence what we become…how good we become, and I ask the question: “Is Talent Real?”

If we can get a clear idea of what talent really is, can we get better at developing talent and identifying future potential? Collectively, we are not all that good at predicting future talent and potential.

Could it be we looking at the wrong factors? The wrong variables? Is predicting talent simply too complex and unpredictable to be predictable?

What are the limitations involved in Early Specialization into a single sport & how can you overcome and/or manage the variables involved?

We find out as we discuss all of this and more on this week’s jam-packed episode of Krush Performance.

For athletes, navigating today’s developmental/High Performance pathways is more complicated than ever.

It is mid summer and that means Baseball’s Mid-Summer Classic.

Baseball is a great sport to watch – regardless of what sport you play. There is plenty to learn from watching what is happening in other sports and maybe more so today than at any time in sport.

Times are changing as are the pathways to the elite levels of the game for many reasons.

This week on Krush Performance we talk with Krush Hall of Famer, Greg Hamilton, Head Coach and Director of Men’s teams for Baseball Canada.

Greg has been around the game for years and has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the game of baseball and the development of players.

Awarded the Baseball America 2022 Tony Gwynn Award for Lifetime Achievement and Contributions to the Game joining names like Cal Ripken, Jerry Weinstein, Felipe Alou & others.

Early in 2025, Greg was also voted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

We discuss the ever-changing developmental pathways in the game and the new focus on collegiate sport as a major avenue for player development.

We’ll look at the influence of the Olympics and MLB’s World Baseball Classic on awareness and participation in the sport.

We will also discuss the injury issues in the sport and what you need to know as a parent, coach or player who is working to chase down the dream of playing at the next level.

Baseball is a data driven sport there are numbers for every aspect of player performance but what has not changed are the humans who are playing the game.

Understanding the concepts of long-term player & athlete development is more important than ever before and it is a critical component in the process of Creating More Coachable Players.

What are you looking at?

We need to know because what you see directly impacts your performance.

Perception has been one of the main Krush themes over the past few years and rightfully so.

How you perceive your environment directly impacts performance outcomes in both sport and in life.

Success in sport is greatly dependent on what you see, where you look what you focus on, your visual gaze.

What you see feeds the brain information needed for making decisions, reactions and for planning. But what you see is only a small piece of the Vision Performance puzzle.

How you process this information is also critical for decision making (the Krush Brain Game).

And here’s the thing, its all VERY TRAINABLE…If you know what to do and how to do it?

This week on the Krush Performance Summer Series we go back into the world of Sport & Performance Vision with Krush Favorite Dr. Daniel Laby of Sports Vision NYC.

Are you Looking OR are you Seeing?

We know that the visual strategies of top athletes are much different than those of near-elite or developing athletes.

What would happen if young developing athletes were taught vison strategies?

What would happen to your performance if you trained your vision and your vision processing?

Well I can tell you, It is a game changer and its one of the untapped areas wide open for anyone who is working to create more coachable players.

If you were to take a guess on what the greatest ability in sport is today, what would you say?

Strength, speed, power?

Game sense? Or a skill or a specific talent.

Could it be Grit, commitment, determination or complete levels?

There is one thing that above all else – one ability or trait that might be more valued in today’s sporting landscape than anything else.

And, if you can harness this particular trait/ability, as a player it may be the most powerful thing you could ever do to really find out just how far you can go in sport.

This week on Krush Performance we talk with my good friend and former colleague, Tommy Craig, former Head Athletic Trainer for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tommy was there as the Blue Jays built a team designed to win championships and that is exactly what they did, ’92-’93 back to back World Series Championship.

We will talk with Tommy about where sport is at, how baseball has changed, and we will discuss what we feel is the Greatest Ability an Athlete can have.

It is one of the most powerful things you can possibly do to beat out the competition and reach your true potential in sport and it is without question one of the most important aspects of development when you are Creating Coachable Players.

The Number One Priority in Maximizing Athlete and Player Performance is Recovery.

Athlete and Player development is all about problem solving.

Maximizing performance and future development relies on recovery.

Yes, you need quality training, you need quality technical and tactical preparation you need quality competition, but all of this is only as good as an Athlete’s/Player’s state of Recovery – their state of Readiness.

A few weeks back at our MLB European Spring Tournament where we had 90 players from 14 countries, age 15-20 years, come together in Spain to showcase their talents for Major League Teams a players asked me if I use ice with my athletes back home.

My answer – No we do not.

And I went on to explain why we don’t use ice to a group of players and coaches who were surprised, uncertain and even alarmed because they have been taught all their careers that ice is part of the process.

This week on Krush Performance we problem solve Recovery, Ice and Maximizing Readiness in sport as we talk with Krush Favorite: Gary Reinl, Researcher, Investigator and Educator.

How important is recovery…..The Most Important!

“Rather than figuring out how much training you can stand,

instead, figure out how little you need.”

We don’t know how good an athlete can be and if an athlete gives it everything they have and does not quite get there because they just were not good enough, that is 100% okay, I respect that.

BUT if an athlete does NOT get there because they have been mismanaged… well that is 100% UNACCETABLE!

If you want to maximize your performance, reduce your risk of injury and raise your ceiling of performance you MUST recalibrate you’re thinking and understand that recovery is the most important variable when you are Creating Coachable Players.

The high-performance pathway is changing right before our eyes.

Past players who had incredible careers might not even get a chance to play in todays sporting landscape.

If you are an athlete/player with goals of playing at the highest level of your sport, what does your pathway to the big leagues look like?

What should you be thinking about as you work your way through the system?

What traits are most valued by teams and organizations today?

We discuss all of this and much more with former Major League Player, Jeff Conine.

Jeff took a very interesting pathway to the big leagues and there is a lot we can learn from his experiences.

Sport is a commodities market and if you have a talent or skill, if you bring value to the table, you will have a shot at chasing down your dream.

Understanding the performance pathway and how it has changed is a very important part of the process when you are Creating Coachable Players.

The timing of this conversation could not be better and if you are involved in the game of baseball in anyway you are going totally appreciate this episode of Krush Performance.

Heck, if you are involved in any sport this is an important conversation with so many takeaways.

With the Major Legue Baseball season underway this is the perfect time to talk player development, injury prevention and organizational performance.

And this week on Krush Performance we do exactly that with Krush Favorite, Chris Woodward, 1st Base Coach for the LA Dodgers.

Woody has had an incredible journey through baseball and today he shares all of his insights, from his playing days to his first coaching job, to Managing the Texas Rangers right into his return to the Dodgers.

I have questions for Chris about player development, analytics, the use of technology and the inner workings of Major League Organizations.

What do they look for in players and how do they go about helping players get the VERY most out of themselves as players and as individuals.

I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the kick off the 2025 Major League Season as we all work to create more coachable players.

Staying injury-free might be the single most important thing baseball players can do to raise their value.

Last year MLB teams paid over $1B to players who could not play.

The majority of this was paid out to pitchers who could not throw due to injury.

The injury rates are at historical highs at every level of the game and it is literally changing how teams recruit players and especially pitchers.

Today we talk pitching, pitching performance & pitcher management with one of the games leading pitching coaches, Hector Barrios.

Hector and I go WAY back but the work he is now doing and his approach to pitching has helped some of baseball’s best pitchers get better and some of the greatest young talent exceed all expectations.

No matter what level of the game you are at or what position you play:

This is a conversation every baseball player, family and team should pay attention to.

Avoiding injury and maximise performance may seem overwhelming, but you might just be surprised at how simple it can actually be if you focus on the right things.

Once thing is certain, having a plan is a critical part of Creating Coachable Players and every performance plan must start with the fundamentals of performance, in this episode we narrow this down for you and explain exactly how and why the foundation of movement might be the key to it all.

What does it take to make the Big Leagues?

If it were only this simple.

There are countless variables, and the pathway may be different for each player but there are a couple of attributes that just might increase your odds of making it.

GRIT, determination, hardiness, resilience, coachability, fate and yes, some talent.

All of these play a roll in “making it” the interesting thing… you have great control over all of these.

As MLB spring training gets underway and as the snow begins to melt up north baseball players everywhere are gearing up for the season.

Today we kick off a series of shows looking into talent development, injury prevention and all out performance and we’ll use the game of baseball as our backdrop.

There is plenty to learn from the game of baseball – even if baseball is not your sport. Professional sport teams are constantly looking to other sports to learn and expand their thinking. This is why you will see executives from NHL teams visiting MLB teams or NBA teams traveling to Europe to visit the great soccer teams there is plenty to learn when you take a good look at how teams in different sports operate.

Over the next few episodes, we will be doing exactly this, looking into the game of baseball.

If baseball is your sport this will be a great place to be in order to get a better understanding of the baseball performance landscape.

If baseball is not your sport, you will gain insights, strategies and a glimpse into the issues facing this sport and how teams and organizations and players are working to thrive and push performance to new levels.

We begin our journey by looking at the Journey of making it to the Big Leagues as we talk with one of my former players, Bob File, former Major League Pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bob was drafted by the Jays in 1998 and quickly found his way to the big leagues. We came up the ranks together – I was the Head Minor League Strength and Conditioning coach at that time and a few years later both Bob and I found our selves in the Bigs Leagues.

We talk with Bob about his journey, his approach, what he learned and now in retrospect what advice does he have for up-and-coming players with the dream of playing Major League baseball.

One thing that is perfectly clear, no one does it alone when it comes to Creating Coachable Players.

In Sport, balancing training, practice and rest and recovery has quickly become one of the most powerful tools in maximizing sport performance.

Day to day, week to week, month by month micro and macro programming has changed how we manage our athletes.

However, at the developmental and youth levels of sport the concept of “Athlete Management’ is greatly non-existent.

With Great intentions we train year-round and pack the weekly schedule with all kinds of activity – could it be holding you back or even worse setting you up for failure?

This week on Krush Performance we talk with Ed Subel, Associate Head Strength and Conditioning for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

The NBA is on the forefront of athlete and player management and the league itself has made strategic changes to the schedule to help players avoid fatigue and ultimately injury.

We talk with Ed about his approach to working with the world’s best Basketball players, Effort is a big piece of the puzzle and we look at how we can apply this to players at every level of the game.

Focusing on effort and collaborating with your athletes in their programming is a BIG part of the process when you are Creating Coachable Players.

Sport is a commodities market and the #1 commodity in sport is Talent!

Its like the Wild West, Guns for Hire and its BIG BUSINESS.

You’ve probably hears all about it: The Largest Deal In Professional Sport History.

Juan Soto, $765 Million over 15 years. With signing bonus and incentives, he will earn close to $840,000,000 by the time its all done.

Soto is obviously a HOT commodity but how do you value Talent?

It’s a numbers game. A players performance numbers compared to all other players, it’s a market value system.

Its Cut and Dry, Black and White and it is Absolutely Unforgiving.

Either you have the numbers, or you do not.

However, what do you do as a young player with a dream of playing in the big leagues?

Or as a parent of an athlete who has that dream?

Or as a coach of a driven passionate kid who loves sport.

My best advice, for what its worth, is to get an understanding of the long game that is athlete development and read up on Talent.

This can really help you guide your athlete through the process and at the same time give you some great knowledge that you can use to make informed decisions.

That is exactly what we are going to do on this week’s episode of Krush Performance as we sum up all of our work looking into Talent and Talent ID.

Soto’s contract with bonuses and clauses can add up to more than $840 million over the15 years – he’ll be 41.

Its Great Work if you can get it and there is nothing like the thrill of the chase when you are creating coachable players.

One of the most important questions in sport today,

What to do over your off season?

The off season for me is one of the most important periods in an athlete’s annual plan.

This is where you train the athlete to be a more coachable player.

Annual Planning, it’s a cycle of Athlete & Player management that can be broken down into 4 phases:

· Off season

· Pre-Season

· In-Season

· Post-Season

Remember all programmed work MUST be built around our #1 Priority for program planning, Rest & Recovery.

And when it comes to an athlete’s daily performance, Sleep Rules all!!!!

When you are planning an athlete’s workload & recovery there are 4 factors you need to consider:

· Volume – the how much

· Intensity – the how hard

· Frequency – the how often

· Movement Efficiency – the how much stress/damage

Bottom line, take advantage of any downtime you can get!

As you head into your off-season ask yourself What is the benefit to year-round sport?

It takes time to master a sport and there are no truer words than MORE IS NOT BETTER when you’re Creating Coachable Players

Today, you can probably pick out the organizations with great cultures with great accuracy:

Kansas City Chiefs – The LA Dodgers – Vegas Knights -Celtics

Or Top Schools: Stanford, Penn State, University of California

Storied football Franchises: Liverpool, Barcelona FC Real Madrid, Chelea

They all have a Culture of Winning / Winning Cultures.

Coming off of last weeks show with Kevin Tyler, President of Altis the conversation with our listeners surprised me.

It was more about the environment and culture that Kevin and Altis has created and not so much the details that make up a performance program.

The talk was about the big picture of when an athlete or coach step into an environment like this – only good things can happen, and I really thought this takeaway was interesting.

There is no question, the idea of “culture” has been a focus in sport for a long, long time.

On this week’s Episode of Krush Performance we go back into our 2022 Theme: Organizational and Team Performance with my conversation with Joan Ryan, acclaimed journalist and author of 5 books, including “Intangibles: Unlocking the Science and Soul of Team Chemistry.”

Get set as we work to crack the code on organizational and team performance and the elusive concept of “Team Culture” is a perfect place to start.

“Culture Trumps Strategy Every Time.” Harvard Business Review

The Environment and Culture you create for your players is one of the most important things you can do when you are Creating Coachable Players.

Every athlete experiences doubt at some point.

· Doubt about whether they are playing as well as they could be playing or

· Whether they are progressing as fast as they feel they should be or

· Whether they are going to be good enough to achieve their goals and objectives.

The Good News – if you are or have experienced doubt you are not alone.

Even Better News – you can make doubt work to your advantage if you fame it up correctly.

Doubt is a natural part of the athlete and player development process and if you can learn to embrace it, it can be a very helpful tool.

Doubt can be an indicator that it might be time to take a step back and evaluate where you are at, what you have been doing and how you have been planning in relation to your goals and objectives.

In the process of athlete and player development we spend the majority of an athlete’s lifespan preparing for a few years of elite – top performance.

Years and years building the foundation that will eventually support performance outcomes at the highest levels of performance.

Unfortunately, most athletes, coaches, parents underestimate the demands at the highest levels of sport. And in turn, do not fully appreciate the importance of the building phases of development that must happen to support elite performance.

This week on Krush Performance we discuss that process and the importance of coaching development as we breakdown the lifespan of an athlete and everything that goes into creating top performance with Kevin Tyler, President of Altis.

There are no shortcuts in the process of Creating Coachable Players.

If you are working to compete at a higher level it is Critical that you understand what that higher level of competition looks like.

No, if you really want to know what the higher levels of performance look like – and you NEED TO know – you must understand the demands at that next level.

· The physical, mental and emotional demands.

· The travel, the schedule the time demands.

· The competitive demands – the incredible Skill & Talent level of elite/pro athletes.

· You also need to understand the Business side and the Ebb and Flow of elite sport.

It’s just like my analogy of planning a trip – you need to know the weather, terrain, food and social landscape of where you are going so you can prepare properly.

This week on Krush Performance we put Elite & Pro Sport into context in a roundtable discussion with three Krush Favorites from my TSN Sport Radio days: Craig Moonen (Former Krush Co-Host), and Sportscasters Corey Graham and Marc Majeau.

This week on Krush Performance an incredible journey of perseverance, survival, teamwork and problem solving all while performing at the highest levels of Sport and Business.

The Outcome: An Incredible Program that I personally believe will change how we work with, support and develop athletes.

In a truly inspirational story we talk with Jason Campeau, CEO of Elite Athlete Services, a program designed to help armature and professional athletes with all of their cognitive, mental and performance needs.

Today I will ask you to step into the lead roll and imagine yourself as a young hockey player leaving home to step into the turbulent and uncertain world of professional hockey.

Then with injuries and concussions forcing you out of sport, you step into the Tech Industry where you help build a great company.

The comes a big buyout and this allows you to step back into the world of sport this time however your teammates won’t be 20 or so other hockey players.

No, this time your team will be made up of 16 of the most loyal and dedicated teammates you could ever imagine.

Teammates that will take you thousands of miles across the arctic in one of the most brutal, difficult and challenging races on earth not just once or twice but 5 times.

On the fourth race, these teammates will save your life after a terrible fall helping you survive just long enough through a brutal blizzard and – 55 /-60-degree temperatures.

Just Long enough for some special people could safely arrive with an Blackhawk Helicopter to get you back to safety – a safety that would turn out to be a new kind of nightmare. The kind of nightmare that can come with a major brain injury/ concussion.

This is a story of dreams and goals, survival and perseverance that all come together in a new cutting-edge program that will change Sport Performance / Human Performance for all time.

I am so glad you are joining me here today and I’m very proud to share Jason’s incredible story on this week’s episode of Krush Performance: “From the Rink to the Boardroom: It’s Okay Not to Be Okay”.

What Does it Take to be Great

This week on Krush Performance we are going to take a good hard look at talent, the development of talent and ultimately what it really takes to get better at something.

It’s a massive discussion with multiple layers and many areas of grey so lets review what we know about talent and talent development so you can informed decisions and move forward with purpose.

Let me start with a question: Is Talent Overrated?

Does talent come first?

Does there need to be recognizable Talent – whatever that is – in order to have the chance to go on to success?

Are we born with Talent?

Or is Talent something that we develop?

There are so many questions revolving around talent – and one of the most important just might be – what exactly is talent in the first place?

This week we go to one of the very important early discussions that kick started the Krush our look into Talent and Talent Development with Krush Favorite: Geoff Colvin, Award-winning journalist for Fortune & CBS Radio, Bestselling author & renown speaker as we discussed his research and best-selling book and Krush MUST READ: “Talent is Overrated: What really separates World Class Performers from Everyone Else.

If you are working to get better at something or if you are a coach, teachers, boss or manager or even a parent of people with goals and objectives this could be one of the most important discussions you could hear when you are Creating Coachable Players.

How Athletes are the Sum of Their Experiences

You are a product of your Environment.

Your athletes & players are products of their environments.

So, what do we need to do to create a performance environment?

Provide Meaningful Experiences!

In essence you are the sum of your experiences.

You are also the sum of how you interpret, learn from and respond to each experience you have small or large.

This week on Krush Performance I share a great experience I had with three Krush listeners – it was a great 30-minute conversation in the lobby of a restaurant.

It was this conversation that set the tone for this weeks show and our trip back to one of the great Krush Conversations with David Epstein, author of the “Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance”.

Its a great look back as we move forward into the world of Perception and creating performance environments for our athletes, teams and organizations.

Creating performance environments rich with experiences designed to enhance learning and adaptation at any level of sport is a integral part of raising your players potential when you are Creating Coachable Players.

Are you ready for the change?

Are you prepared for new sports, the move from indoor to outdoor or transitioning from the snow & cold to the warm weather?

With the spring comes a time of transition and you had better be prepared.

Look at any of the major sports and you will see a training camp or preseason period that is specifically designed to progressively help players get ready to perform at their very best when the season starts. Top performance and injury prevention are the two main priorities here.

So, as we transition into spring doesn’t it make sense that you prepare as well?

Take the time to get ready for any indoor to outdoor transitions or as you get set for your spring and summer sports.

This week on Krush Performance I’d like to do exactly that, take some time to get set up for the spring & summer.

Here is what we are working on:

The Krush War on Sugar:

The World Health Organization just Announced the latest obesity data and its NOT GOOD!!!!

The analysis estimates that nearly 880 million adults and 159 million children lived with obesity in 2022.

Obesity rates among children and adolescents worldwide increased fourfold from 1990 to 2022, while obesity rates among adults more than doubled.

Coming this spring, we will break down the data, look at why human health is changing so rapidly and we discuss what you can do RIGHT Now to protect yourself & your kids.

Spring Baseball: Are you Ready?

As the Baseball season gets underway here is what I can promise you, once the throwing starts and games begin medical clinics across the nation will be flooded with shoulder and elbow issues!

Some of them will be minor some will be major but the VAST majority are preventable if you just take the time to properly prepare for the season.

To help you avoid falling victim to injury and to increase your performance we are going to talk to some of the top minds the Game.

Plus we’ll share the Krush Teams, players and stories we are following this season, there is so much going on in the game right now.

We’ll discuss.

Perception:

Perception is the Krush Theme for 2024 and I’m looking forward to continuing our deep dive into what I believe is one of the most influential aspects of sport performance.

Over the course of this entire 2024 Krush Season we will visit with some of the worlds top experts to get a full understanding of perception and its roll in Athlete & Player Development and in Human Performance at large.

Then as we roll into summer we’ll look at:

· The Paris Olympics
· The Hockey Off Season
· The NHL & NBA Post Season & Championships
· And we’ll continue to look into our “Creating Coachable Players Program”, I believe it is going to be a game changers for so many athletes and coaches out there. Super fun stuff.
If you have any topics you would like us to discuss let me know – info @ush performance.

We always say look back to Learn – look forward TO PLAN and right now – be in the Moment.

I challenge you to look back on your last season & learn a s much as you can, look forward to clearly see where you want to go and then put it all together. Write it out, get a calendar or a note book and map your performance plan.

Because Problem Solving and Decision Making are two of the most important skills you can have when you are Creating Coachable Player.

Just how long does it take to become a Top Performer?

There is an Ebb and Flow to Athlete Development, its a Long Game and there are No Short Cuts!

Where exactly do top performers come from?

What do they do differently from everyone else?

Is there a process for optimum development and if yes, what does that process look like?

Understanding the Long Game of Athlete & Player Development is crucial to reaching one’s potential and a vital part of Creating Coachable Players.

We discuss how sleep impacts brain function and learning, strategies for getting better sleep, and the pitfalls of using sleep aids over the counter or prescription. Also, we take a hard line when it comes to electronics and our sleep programs.

There are some powerful routines and strategies you can use right now to get a better sleep and get back to sleep when you wake up in the middle of the night.

An all-important episode of Krush Performance as we discuss strategies for better sleep.

Context is defined as: “the interrelated conditions in which something exists or occurs.”

I use the concept of context all the time in our performance programming and its very important for a number of reasons.

When building programs for our athletes I call it Player Context.

Player Context is a picture in time that tells us where an athlete/player is at in relationship to where they have come from and considering where they are going or want to go.

And when it comes to analytics, statistics and athlete testing in sport Context becomes a critical part of the process.

We rarely – if ever – show our athletes their testing numbers. We may, from time to time, sit down with an athlete and show them a critical number or result and explain why its so important – good or bad – but for the most part we only share recommendations that come out of the testing numbers.

If we do decide to share numbers with an athlete,

We give the numbers context… clear context… and this is important.

This week on Krush Performance I share our approach to establishing Context, why we feel it is one of the most important aspects of Creating Coachable Players.

It was predicted that over 110 million people were going to sit down to watch the Super Bowl LVIII.

It’s a staggering number – and the very reason companies are willing to pay $7 million to air a 30 second commercial…. probably money well spent in the big picture.

Today we dive back into the Krush Mail bag to answer questions from the Krusher’s.

There have been some great questions, comments, feedback and yes even smart remarks, which I love.

And with the spectacular wrap up to the NFL season we just witnessed we are going to kick this episode off with a football question BUT NOT before we quickly talk about the Super Bowl.

What is the greatest show in sport? We find out.

And, I share a great success story I just came across. It confirms once again that there no single path to the top.

Questions from the Krusher’s: I wanted to address some of the questions from our in-box and social media.

We discuss questions addressing:

· Individualization for athlete and player development and what it looks like.

· How your Focus can be derailing your performance & what you should be focusing on to performance at your best.

· The downside of Energy Drinks, Caffeine & Sugar, how they can derail your performance.

· Strategies for addressing Stress and Anxiety.

Our Goal has always been to get you thinking about things you might not be thinking about.

This week you get us thinking as we answer Questions from the Krusher’s.

In sport there is a fine line between pushing the limits of performance and managing the risks of fatigue, burnout and injury.

It’s a balancing act and one that requires short term adjustments and Long-Term planning.

Its like a dance, moving smoothly between the rhythms of training and competition between work, recovery, and regeneration.

Every sport has its unique demands, and each athlete has their own personal and unique Performance Range that they must understand and manage.

I’ll discuss the variables you need to consider when building your programs and managing your athletes.

Variables like, Intensity, Volume, Movement Efficiency, Age & Growth among others.

I also share with you a very special model that will help you understand sport stress and athlete recovery.

And, we’ll look at how and why different sports, drills and exercise require different recovery times.

No matter what sport you play, no matter what level you play at, athlete and player management strategies are a critical part of reducing the risk of injury and maximizing in game performance.

We explain work and recovery in sport on this weeks episode of Krush Performance.

The Krush Theme for 2024 is…Perception…..

Perception and our understanding of perception may be the next critical step in pushing human performance forward.

I think that perception might be the very fabric on which human performance is weaved.

It has implications that go to the very roots of who we are, who we will become and how we function within our world and within in sport.

Understanding Perception and using it to your advantage may very well be the thing that puts you over the top in terms of performance.

We know that there are a myriad of factors that influence how we perceive things.

Here’s a thought for you, if we have a pretty good idea of the factors that influence perception, should we not then, be able to use this knowledge to help ourselves and those around us perceive better or in a certain way?

I think so, and I also think that this could be one of the most powerful skills you could ever have. Imagine being able to control your perception or influence your perception or your athlete’s perception when it comes to development and performance.

Perception – it’s a monstrous topic but I feel we are ready for it.

And we kick it all off on this week’s episode of Krush Performance.

Is there a difference between Highly Successful People and Highly Competitive People?

When you look at the research & data there appears to a difference – a very interesting difference.

Highly successful people are …well…MUCH more successful than highly competitive people.

The Question then must be WHY.

Why is it that Highly competitive people don’t necessarily make the ranks of highly successful people?

And what do Highly Successful people do that is different from their Highly Competitive counterparts?

It turns out the major difference lies in how they think.

Highly Successful people think and operate much differently than highly competitive people.

And to be clear highly successful people can also be highly competitive, in fact the majority are its almost a prerequisite, a key trait for becoming highly successful.

BUT Big difference is an important one – Highly successful people have figured out how to tame and channel their competitiveness and turn it into an advantage rather than letting that competitive nature take over and derail their intentions.

This is a common theme seen among highly successful people.

Could this also be one of the common themes among highly successful teams and organizations?

How exactly do they do this?

Well, that is exactly the question we intend to answer on this episode of Krush Performance.

And to help us do this we spoke with one of the Krush Hall of Fame Guests, Performance Specialist Dr. Jacques Dallaire of Performance Prime.

Coach Belichick once said “Good Players can’t overcome bad coaching. Its impossible”

Great Quote and I agree 100%.

But just how much of a difference can good coaching make?

And then I guess we have to ask – what exactly IS good coaching?

The Great coaches and leaders clearly understand their strengths and they also know their weaknesses and they build a skilled team around them (assistant coaches, support staff and their players) so they are strong on all fronts. It’s a Trait/Skill of the great coaches.

And, just as it is important to understand how coaches really work, knowingly or unknowingly, there’s something called Coaching Bias and it’s happening everywhere all of the time whether you realize it or not.

This week on Krush performance we look at What Makes a Great Coach?

And, why changing coaches is Risky Business if you want to win Long Term.

The data and history tell us that the teams with fewer coaching changes are more successful PERIOD!!

The evidence is clear: Long-tenured head coaches have historically outperformed their shorter-tenured counterparts.

Analysis has shown that player performance, team performance, and coaching performance all improve as a coach’s tenure grows with a team.

The Smartest General Managers will seek to find the right coaches and let them stay put.

History has shown that even the most revered head coaches require a few years to settle in, but once they do, look out!

This stuff is VERY important to be aware of and not just for coaches – but for the athletes who are trying to make a team and the parents who are supporting their athletes through the developmental landscape.

No matter how you slice it the influence of a coach is SIGNIFICANT and the Longer you keep THE RIGHT COACH the more success you will have.

In a world where they say anything is possible you have to leave no stone unturned if you intend to make the unthinkable, the unlikely or the impossible…possible.

Sport Scientists proclaimed with all of their knowledge and might that humans would Never be able to run a 4-minute mile or a sub 2-hour marathon.

Done and Done.

There are many examples of things thought to be impossible that have been made possible.

But it takes something special to move the marker into uncharted waters, where no person has gone before.

And one of those special things is looking at things differently and looking everywhere you possibly can for inspiration, guidance and answers.

This week the final episode of our Three Part Looking Back to Learn Series we look to a very unlikely source for inspiration, guidance, and answers.

Would you ever think that a former mob boss could help us excel in the world of sport?

I’ll leave you to answer that question as I take you back to my incredible conversation with:

Michale Franzese former Mafia Boss for New York’s feared Columbo Crime FAMILY.

At his peak he was earning upwards of $8 million per week on illegal and legitimate business dealings.

He is ranked as one of the most powerful and wealthy mob bosses in history the biggest money earner since Al Capone.

This is an incredible conversation about crime, sport corruption and the unbelievable system the mafia used to generate, loyalty, fear, and money…lots and lots of money.

Sometimes you need to learn what not to do in order to nail down what you should do and this week we turn to a most unlikely and incredible source to learn more about human performance.

In sport there is real hardcore science that is shining light on areas of human performance and guiding us to a better understanding of athlete development and ultimately to new heights of achievement.

But the science is one thing. Knowing how to utilize it in the real world of athlete and player development and competition – well that’s a different thing.

This requires a `deep understanding of both the science and the ebb and flow of the sport performance world.

And that is an art.

Welcome to Episode Two of our Three part “Looking Back to Learn Series.”

This week we are looking back to a fantastic conversation with Investigative Reporter and Author David Epstein, as we discuss his New York Times #1 Bestseller and Krush Must Read Book,

“The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance”

We also talk with David about all his adventures and stories as he travelled the world collecting research and tracking down the content for this blockbuster book.

Get your Pen & Paper ready because if you are involved in sport at any capacity there is so much to learn.

We always say look back to learn – look forward to plan – and make sure that right now you are in the moment.

It is the only way to operate if you want to be a top performer.

There is no question you need to learn and learning how to learn from your experiences, both good and bad, may be one of the greatest skills you can posses.

You also have to plan.

Being able to understand where you are currently at and where you want to go is another invaluable skill and being able to lay out clear and concise strategy for getting from point a to point B is something that can set you apart.

We can get so caught up focusing on outcomes and the what ifs of performance that it is easy to lose sight what is really important in practice and competition – The Process.

It’s the process that will ultimately lead you to success.

This Week on Krush Performance, Episode One of our Three Part “Looking Back Series.”

We go back a couple of years to one of my favorites conversations.

This interview was part of our Organizational and Team performance series, and it simply rocks.

I am proud to share once again our talk with Award Winning Journalist and Author, Joan Ryan as we discussed her Krush Must Read Bestselling Book,

“Intangibles: Unlocking the Science & Soul of Team Chemistry”.

· Does team chemistry actually exist?

· Is there scientific or mathematical proof?

· Is team chemistry as real and relevant as on-base percentages and wins above replacement?

In this episode we discover that the answer to all of the above is a resounding yes.

If you want to know how successful teams and organizations operate, this is a MUST LISTEN Interview!

When it comes to athlete programming, we have three top priorities that guide our entire approach to athlete training and player development:

· Injury Prevention

· Longevity

· Performance

In sport however there’s a problem.

We get caught up on Performance and more times than not stuck there… it’s a dangerous game to play if you want to make it to the top in the world of sport.

And unfortunately, its number two that often gets overlooked… Longevity.

Setting you or your athletes up for the long haul should be a top priority in every program and you have more influence on this than you might think.

It all starts with planning, I’ll explain.

And our brain’s love patterns. Patterns help us do whatever it is we do and the most simple and powerful patterns come in Three’s.

There is something powerful about the number 3. It’s a human thing.

I’ll show you how we use the power of three’s to help our athlete’s achieve in sport.

And it is the End of an Era:

THE VERY LAST OF THE ‘70’s Kids in SPORT

There is a changing of the guard in professional sport we’ll have a look at the very last of the 70”s kids.

We’ll also break down:

· The average length of pro careers.

· The average player age in the major sports.

· And we’ll look at what we can learn from the seasoned veterans who have stood the test of time in a world where time is the greatest adversary.

Time is precious and this week on Krush Performance we look at Longevity in Sport.

At his top speed a certain National league hockey player would not be able to skate through a school zone without getting a speeding ticket…!

Hockey is the fastest show on ice, well the Fastest team show on ice anyway. I mean you have events like ice sailing, ice ski doo racing, even ice motor bike ice racing but in terms of human powered sport, hockey is fast & furious!!

The only other human powered ice sport that we might talk about is Speed Skating where the top competition speeds reach upwards of 34 mph /54.8kph.

This week on Krush Performance we look at performance in the game of Hockey and coming off our Tyranny of Talent show:

We take a quick look at how Late Developers

have become some of the Best Athletes to Ever Play Sports.

I share some great stories from the trenches as I worked with elite hockey players.

· We break down the hockey stride.

· Explain how Speed Skating and Sport Science impacted my approach to training Hockey Players.

· We look at the NHL’s top speeds and hardest shots.

· I share my game experience with some of hockey’s top players.

· And we’ll look at the NHL Krush Watch List as the hockey season gets underway.

Also, one of the conversations that has really taken off surrounds the area of talent ID and how literally terrible we are at predicting future performance and development.

We’ll look at late developers that went on to dominate their sports and why you just can’t quit if you really want to make it. It’s a long game.

This is a fun episode; I don’t usually get to share stories of working with my athletes, but they are so incredible and so many cool things have happened over the years I am glad I was able to share a few with you on this weeks episode of Krush Performance.

The Tyranny of Talent: How it Compels and Limits Athletic Achievement – AND Why We Should Ignore It.

Talent, it is the currency that drives the world of sport from the grassroot entry levels right up to professional and elite world class sport.

However, could it be that what we do not know and understand about Talent, Talent Identification and Talent Development is the very thing that is holding us back from achieving true top performance?

There is plenty of evidence indicating that this is indeed the case.

If we dig into the current research surrounding “TALENT” it is quite evident that our lack of understanding in the areas of talent ID, talent development and “TALENT” itself may be the very thing that is holding us back from achieving true Talent Development.

It is one of the Greatest Conundrums in Sport Today.

If we are going to move sport and human performance forward:

· We need to better understand what talent is and how to address it with in our sporting systems.

· We need to better understand Talent Identification and the powerful influence (both positive and negative) it has on the process of athlete and player development. During an athlete’s development when does talent ID even make sense. Currently we are horrific at predicting future performance based on current performance.

· And we need to better understand the process of athlete and player development. It’s a long game with countless variables.

And, I have a strong feeling it is not about what we should be doing, it is more about what we should stop doing.

This week on Krush Performance we discuss the Krush MUST READ Book, “The Tyranny of Talent: How It Compels and Limits Athletic Achievement…And Why You Should Ignore It” with Krush Hall of Famer Dr. Joe Baker.

Join us this week on Krush Performance as we address the issues, discuss our current knowledge and outline where we need to go when it comes to Talent, Talent Identification and Talent Development.

Environment is a big piece of the talent development puzzle and you have more control than you might realize – if you know what to look for.

What if I told you that more elite athletes come from a certain type of place than others?

What would you think of that.

And, if you think that may be true – what kind of place do you think produces more elite athletes than others??

· Could it be based on Socioeconomic Status?

· Or is it City Living vs Country Living?

· Small Town vs Huge Metropolis?

· Your proximity to facilities?

· All of the above?

This week on Krush Performance we look at the incredible influence your environment has on your development AND YOUR chances of Playing Professional/Elite Sport.

How do your parents and the people you have around you influence your development?

Could the size of the town you grow up in increase your odds of going pro?

And how does the location of where you grow up protect you from injury and improve your chances of playing elite sport?

Understanding the drawbacks and benefits of where you live is all part of sport when you think like an athlete.

And this week we break it all down on Krush Performance.

A few years back I was invited to lecture and teach coaches and work with athletes in New Zealand.

I had never been to New Zealand before, and I was very excited about this trip for a number of reasons.

I was fired up to check out some of the Lord of the Rings movie locations. I was also really looking forward to working with the coaches and athletes, sharing knowledge on athlete development and player performance but, to be honest with you, I was most excited about a possible visit with the All Blacks.

The All blacks are New Zealand’s National Rugby Union Team & they are touted as one of the most successful sporting organizations in the history of All of Sport and yes, I was lucky enough to spend time with them.

“Culture Trumps Strategy Every Time”

So, this week on Krush Performance:

  • In honour of the 2023 Rugby World Cup which is currently well underway in France
  • The game of Rugby
  • The All Blacks
  • And the power of Culture

We return to one of the top Krush Interviews ever recorded.

Early vs Late Developers – This is a very misunderstood part of athlete development.

In terms of athlete development and future performance:

Is it better to be an Early Developer OR is it better to be a Late Developer?

The athlete development data tells a very interesting story one group has an advantage and the numbers are massive.

We’ll discuss who makes it to the top levels of sport much more often and I speculate why these athletes wind up with a powerful advantage.

I also wanted to touch on another important topic that has been brought to the forefront of the sporting world by unfortunate circumstance – Aaron Rogers Achillies injury.

There is a lot of talk right now surrounding the Turf vs Natural Grass debate.

A debate that has been going on – well since the invent of artificial turf.

The NFL Players Association has been pushing for all grass fields for some time – their main platform…there are fewer injuries on grass.

Which surface is safer for athletes?

Who has the advantage Early or Late Developers and which surface is safer for sport Turf or Grass?

Fall is by far one of my favorite times of the year. Its my favorite season for a number of reasons.

And there is nothing quite like fall sports, there is so much going on.

So much to watch and so much to learn.

This is exactly why we watch sport with such great interest. There is plenty to learn from observing the highest levels of any game if you know what to look for.

This week I throw two questions your way:

First, I’d like to know what are you watching this fall and why? I share with you why I watch and what I’m watching for as fall sport gets underway.

And, my second question, do you think NFL players or professional athletes in general specialize early in their sports OR do you think they play multiple sports as they worked their way to the top of their game?

What do you think?

Is early specialization as bad as its made out to be or could it be the way to go?

Perception may very well be one of the most exciting areas for pushing human performance forward.

We have a great understanding of physical preparation for sport. There is not a lot we cannot train. If you want to get faster, stronger, or more powerful… done, done and done. If you want to improve bat speed or club head speed or improve your movement and agility…you got it.

We even have a good idea on how to train and improve your vision, gaze and tracking abilities.

What we do not do very well, what we are just starting to understand is how you perceive your environment and your place in that environment.

There is a new age of athlete development approaching, for too long have we relied on the age-old coach led approach to learning and performance. While there is a place for that style of development, we are about to time warp to new heights of development and performance, and it all lies within the concept of perception, vision and implicit learning.

This week on Krush Performance we explain it all as we are joined with Krush Favorite Tim Nicely, Founder of V-Flex Technologies Inc. and V-Flex Sports.

We’ll do our best to explain this exciting new approach to human performance and we’ll describe implicit training, how it actually works and why it may be the key to it all.

Its breakthrough sport science as we talk Perception and Vision on this week’s episode of Krush Performance.

Are you Coachable?

How do you go about helping yourself, your players and athletes become more coachable?

This week on Krush Performance we lay it all out for you.

We define what “Being Coachable” means and how we go about setting up our athletes and players to become more coachable.

It’s a true team effort and that team includes the athlete, the coach, the organization and the parents.

Every member of the team has to be on the same page, and they must understand the process of athlete and player development – this is often where the system breaks down.

So, in this episode we ask some important questions:
· If you are an athlete – are you coachable?
· If you are a coach – are your players coachable?
· If you are a parent – is your child as an athlete or player coachable?

And, I will share with you what I feel is the MOST Critical Question that needs to be asked and answered if you are going to have any hope of reaching your potential in sport…or anywhere for that matter.

The whole process is actually quite fascinating and this is where it all starts….are you coachable?

If you look at athlete or player development, no matter your sport or what level you compete at there are fundamentals of development that if addressed properly can push your performance to new heights.

And frankly it’s just NOT that complicated.

SO…. This week let’s have a look.

You are what you eat! I remember well the echoes of my Mother’s wisdom and she was right on the mark for the most part.

Nutrition is one of the top priorities for maximizing human performance and potential. It can be as complicated or as simple as you would like to make it but in the end if you don’t have the basics right you are fighting an up hill battle.

Nutrition is a bedrock of human performance and in this episode of Krush Performance we talk with performance dietitian Ricky Ng of Revive Wellness about the ins and outs of your diet.

We look at the basics you need to know about and some of the high performance feeding strategies that can help take your performance to new levels.

Also, we discuss diet for body composition, how the region you live in and your cultural heritage impacts how and what you eat, and we discuss supplements and how they fit into the big picture of performance nutrition.

What can you to do to get better? Better at your job, better at your sport, your music, your hobby? Better at anything? As a parent, teacher or coach, what do you need to know to set the stage so your students, athletes, and children can take a good run at chasing down their dreams?

The top organizations scour the landscape looking for new ideas and strategies for improving performance leaving no stone unturned and you should as well.

Some of the most important research on the development of talent and skill comes out of the Music world.

In this episode of Krush Performance, we are joined live in studio with the founding member’s one of my favorite bands, The Whale and the Wolf.

Ryan Maier (lead vocals), Brandon Yaggey (guitar), Lucas Holt (bassist) join us to talk about their development and their commitment to their music and we discuss what size of community produces the most top performers. Also, we discuss what makes a great performer great (the secret of practice – the right kind of practice!), and in the early 60’s, before they were a world wide sensation, the Beatles did something extraordinary and it may very well be THE reason for their success!!

It has been said that Luciano Pavarotti, one of the greatest opera singers of all time, once proclaimed, “If I don’t practice for a day, I know it. If I don’t practice for 2 days, my wife knows it. If I don’t practice for three days, the world knows it!”

What secrets can we learn from top performers in music and how can it help you get better at whatever it is you love to do? Let’s Find out on this week’s episode of Krush Performance.

In this ever changing world of technology and information, we are experiencing drastic changes in the demands for talent and skills, how we develop them, and where they are now needed. As we continue to expand our understanding of Human Development and Human Performance, we not only have to react to the shifting demands for specific skills and talents, we also now need to adjust how we are developing future talent to meet the new demands. We’ve already begun with new exciting approaches and there are more to come as knowledge and technology continue to push the human performance envelope.

This week on Krush Performance, we talk with Geoff Colvin, Sr. Editor at Large for Fortune Magazine and bestselling author of “Talent is Overrated” and Humans are Underrated,” to discuss the deep questions of:

 What talents and skills you need to develop for this new age?

 And, What does talent and skill development look like as we move forward?

Join us as we look at the future of Human Performance in the weeks episode of Krush Performance! Let us know and if you have any questions, comments, smart remarks, or a topic you would like us to investigate, let us know we may dedicate a segment or even an entire show to your topic.
