Most people think the hardest part of entrepreneurship is coming up with an idea. For a lot of founders today, that’s no longer the problem. The problem is deciding which ideas deserve your time.

In this solo episode of Black Tech Green Money, Will Lucas explores what happens when every opportunity feels like it could be the next big thing. From software startups and media ventures to hospitality, real estate, and AI-powered products, Will shares the reality of navigating a growing portfolio of ideas while trying to stay focused on what matters most.

Along the way, he examines the difference between ideas that excite you and ideas that align with your long-term vision, why AI has made starting projects easier than ever, and how judgment—not execution—may be becoming the most valuable skill in entrepreneurship.

This is a candid conversation about focus, opportunity, decision-making, and the hidden cost of chasing too many good ideas.

If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “Should I build this?” this episode is for you.

Everyone is talking about how AI can help you build a company. Few people are talking about what happens after the AI starts writing the code.

In this episode, Will Lucas takes you behind the scenes of building ICON, an on-demand photography marketplace, largely with the help of AI. From working in the wrong repository and rebuilding architecture, to broken app launches, failed notifications, customer-trust issues, and the constant cycle of two steps forward and four steps back, this is the honest version of what it looks like to build a real product in the age of AI. Along the way, Will shares what AI is genuinely great at, where it consistently falls short, why judgment may be the most valuable skill in the modern economy, and why the goal of a startup is never perfection, it’s getting to launch. If you’ve ever wondered whether AI is hype, opportunity, or something in between, this episode is for you.

Most aspiring entrepreneurs think their biggest challenge is finding the perfect startup idea. In this solo episode of Black Tech Green Money, Will Lucas argues that the real challenge isn’t generating ideas, it’s learning how to recognize problems worth solving. Drawing from his experiences building CommPartHS and ICON, Will explores how successful businesses often emerge from observing inefficiencies, unmet needs, and overlooked opportunities hiding in plain sight. He breaks down why AI is a powerful tool but not a substitute for insight, how your current job or industry may be revealing business opportunities every day, and why entrepreneurs who develop the skill of observation will have a lasting advantage in the AI era.

In this episode, Will Lucas discusses the importance of shifting from a service-oriented mindset to a platform-oriented approach in business. He emphasizes that building a platform allows for greater leverage, scalability, and the ability to create demand rather than just fulfilling it. Through personal anecdotes and examples, he illustrates how entrepreneurs can transform their businesses by thinking bigger and creating ecosystems that benefit not only themselves but also their communities. The conversation covers practical steps for building platforms, the rise of freelancers, and the types of platforms that can be developed to achieve success.

Takeaways

  • If you are building a service, you're probably thinking too small.
  • Service thinking is labor-centered; platform thinking is leverage-centered.
  • Platform thinking separates your income from your hours.
  • The power lies in controlling demand, not just talent.
  • Building a container allows for multiple opportunities to flourish.
  • Ecosystems compound and grow larger over time.
  • Freelancers are on the rise, creating a need for platforms to organize them.
  • You can build various types of platforms, including marketplaces and communities.
  • Positioning is more important than having a large budget to start.
  • Your small business doesn't have to stay small; it can evolve into a platform.

On this episode of Black Tech Green Money, we strip away the packaging to reveal the hard science and high-stakes finance powering the Black hair revolution. The days of "kitchen chemists" are evolving into an era of AI-driven diagnostics and nine-figure exits. Will Lucas sits down with the architects of this shift to answer the trillion-dollar question: Can you scale a culturally rooted brand without losing its soul?

We hear from industry titans Courtney Adeleye (The Mane Choice) and Monique Rodriguez (Mielle Organics) on navigating the controversial waters of acquisition and what it really takes to transition from a community favorite to a global powerhouse. Meanwhile, a new guard of tech-founders—Candace Mitchell (Myavana) and Dr. Tiffany St. Bernard (HairDays)—explain how they are training algorithms to diagnose scalp health and personalize care. And, Ciara Imani May (Rebundle) breaks down the chemistry of comfort, revealing how banana fiber is disrupting the toxic synthetic hair market. This is the business of beauty, engineered.

On this episode, we explore the collision of sports culture, high-stakes finance, and the digital frontier. We move past the scoreboard to look at the business of being an athlete in the modern era—from the "identity economy" where virtual skins hold as much weight as vintage sneakers, to the brutal reality of the "Jock Tax" and the pressure to save everyone back home. This conversation redefines what it means to build a legacy, shifting the focus from simply making money to mastering the systems that preserve it.

Features: Kai Bond (Courtside VC) explains the billion-dollar shift in how Gen Z defines ownership; NFL linebacker Jaylon Smith and business manager Michael Edo get real about financial literacy and overcoming the "Savior Complex"; Tyrre Burks (Player's Health) shares how he leveraged athletic resilience to disrupt the insurance industry; and NBA star Terance Mann joins Julian Aikens (W3 Sports) to discuss navigating the volatility of Web3. Tune in for a masterclass on how the discipline of sport translates into the language of equity and innovation.

Ep. 149 Permissionless often refers to public blockchains that allow anyone to participate in validating and mining transactions as well as using the system to buy, sell and trade assets.

Wealth and Success are also permissionless. You don't need anyone's approval to go after your dream, start your company, or invest in your future. Since you don't need it, don't wait for it. Just GO and figure things out along the way. There is no playbook for you to specifically find your success in advance. The playbook for your life reveals itself only when you're in motion.

Ep. 143 Your tech stack is the set of applications you use to operate your business. As you grow, your needs are certainly going to evolve, and what worked for you at one level, may not be the best fit for you at future levels. This episode offers a few categories and concepts you should consider as we approach the end of the year regarding the technology you use to run your business, no matter what industry you're in. In many cases, EOY is the best time of year to consider which software, apps, and processes you will keep as your business grows, and what you should transition. Doing it at the end of the year gives you the opportunity to make a clean break, hopefully reducing the frustration and issues should you do this mid-year.

This episode is about how you should, especially this time of year, evaluate your tech stack.

I hope you gain a lot of insights and inspiration from it!

We are living in the days where the people who beg for forgiveness vs. ask for permission are going to be in position to succeed. If you’re waiting for the perfect time to start your thing, you’ll be at a disadvantage.

There's a lot going on in AI as of late. The stuff happening, both in the actual tech as well as in the ecoystem of AI, is at a fever pitch. Things that used to play out over months are now happening in a matter of hours.

It's time to bust a move if you're 'bout it.

Jessica O. Matthews, CEO and founder of Uncharted, stopped by the AfroTech Executive conference in Seattle 2023 to discuss how we can have a sustainable future and harness the power of AI. She’s on the stage speaking with Jonnie Bradley who is the Responsible AI Official for the Department of Energy and Sr. Program Manager for the Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office.
