LM, Episode 1114, 1/4/23

As with most of America, this year we had a Christmas snowstorm in Cincinnati. That morning I woke Twyla with the opening of the WKRP episode where Johnny Fever is playing surf music, Jan and Dean, Beach Boys. He goes on air, saying “Surfs up babies and it’s a beautiful day here in Cincinnati where it’s a blistering 14 degrees outside and the wind is lofting down from the north at about a thousand miles an hour.”

Twyla and I love WKRP. We loved it when it was first on the air and we watched it in reruns over and over again. We say lines from it like, “More music and Les Nesman.” It is part of our shared history, it is part of the shared history of all Baby Boomers in America, but it is so funny it needs to be part of everyone’s life.

I’m doing a set at the comedy club in St. Louis when one of the younger comics sees my WKRP in Cincinnati t-shirt and he says “So, you work in radio?”

“Son, that’s sad. I want you to go home, not to your basement room, I want you to go upstairs and ask your parents about WKRP in Cincinnati. More than likely they have the DVD boxset and you will laugh out loud.”
