LM, Episode 1116, 1/6/23, Poor Kevin McCarthy
If there is someone in America who had a worse week than Republican Kevin McCarthy, I feel sorry for them. Bless his heart, three times this week he has taken a vote to be Speaker of the House of Representatives and, even though Republicans hold a slim majority, he didn’t win. That is the first time in over a hundred years the House didn’t elect a speaker on the one ballot. Heck, the new Democratic leader, Hakeem Jeffries, won more votes than McCarthey.
There seem to be 20 Republicans hell bent on stopping progress. The House can’t function until it elects a speaker, but we’ve seen this before. John Beohner had this problem when he was speaker. Paul Ryan had the same problem when he was speaker. They are letting less than 5 % of the House grind the business of the American government to a halt.
Maybe someone should take a page from the January 6th Committee, act like an adult, and offer to work in a non-partisan way. Either McCarthy or Jeffries could reach across the aisle and ask for a few people of the other party to vote for them with the promise that the House of Representatives could function properly by working on legislation that is important for Republicans, Democrats, and the American people. Sure Republicans won’t be able to endlessly investigate Hunter Biden’s laptop or vote to impeach a president who has not committed a crime, but they could actually do the job they were elected to do and that is govern.
Have a great weekend and always remember laughter matters.
