LM, Episode 1120, 1/10/23, Hee Haw

I grew up in a mixed family and never were the differences more evident than on Saturday night when Dad’s family watched Lawrence Welk and Mom’s watched Hee Haw. Bubbles versus Pickin’ and Grinnin’. It was the Lennon Sisters versus the Hager Twins, which, if it came to a real fight, my money would be on the Lennon Sisters. Sure, they were all smiles, but they had an air about them that said they shouldn’t be messed with.

I don’t know about you, but, growing up in a small town, I just knew one day Buck Owens would say, “Hee Haw salutes Richmond, MO, population 4007, SALUTE.” He never did, but hope springs eternal.

For my taste, I preferred the music on Hee Haw. Give me Buck Owens and Roy Clark any day over Lawrence Welk, but the humor was awful. What do you get when you cross a parrot and a cup of coffee? I don’t know, but it keeps me up all night talking.

Wives are like fishermen. They’re always bragging about the one that got away and complaining about the one they caught.

No wonder my uncles don’t think I’m funny.

As I was writing this, I asked my wife, Twyla, “What was the song they sang about the wife running away?”

Immediately she goes, “Where, oh, where are you tonight, why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and I thought I found true love, you met another and Pfft you was gone.”

And that is why Twyla is the woman for me. Because, her brain is saturated with songs from 1960’s TV shows. ‘

And, if you remember Hee Haw or Lawrence Welk, you are probably a Baby Boomer and may want to join me for my Baby Boomer Comedy Show this Saturday at the Fairfield, IA Arts and Convention Center, Tickets are available at www.fairfieldacc.com. Thank you for listening and always remember laughter matters.
