A former Toronto city councilor, Jack Layton would become the leader of the federal NDP in 2003. In every subsequent election, he helped the party gain more seats until it became the Official Opposition in 2011. Sadly, he would die only months later from cancer. He remains one of the most popular politicians in recent memory.
