The brother of actor Leslie Nielsen, Erik had quite the life of his own. For 30 years, from 1957 to 1987, he served under three Prime Ministers as a Member of Parliament and was the Leader of the Official Opposition for a few months in 1983.

After he left Parliament, the man known as Velcro Lips, wrote a tell-all book that set the standard for brutal honesty in political autobiographies.
