List of 5 things you should consider when making the jump
1- What gun is for you?
Guns are a personal choice, finding the right gun is like finding the right shoes or even underwear for that matter. Take the time talking to your friends, go to the range that allows you to rent a few different firearms and get a feel for what you like. There isn’t a “one gun for every person”.
2- Take more than just a basic handgun class, that’s just the basics.
Training is something we like to encourage here, it’s a life long journey.
3- Hit the range, and dry fire…a lot!
Take what you have learned and apply it on the range. Schedule a day and time if you can and make it a routine, just don’t make it a chore. You also can develop great trigger discipline with quality dry-fire practice in the privacy of your own home.
4- Find a quality holster and belt.
This is always a tricky one to figure out. This combination will change as your skills, clothing styles, and firearm choices do. Those of us that have played this game for a while always have a few combinations sitting in a box somewhere.
5- Commit to the lifestyle.
This is a hard one to conquer, making the decision to carry is a serious one. There is a lot to consider when we choose to carry life-saving equipment everyday. Understand the seriousness of using a firearm in defense (or any defensive tool for that matter). Know the laws in your city and state, ignorance is no excuse. Understand that in a lot of states, carrying is pretty normal, and many normal people carry guns as a defensive tool everyday.
