Learn how to teach your students to play in tune by taking advantage of the features of the Tonal Energy tuning app. In this episode, my colleague Ben Denne joins to talk about a comprehensive methodology for teaching your students how to play in tune using their ears, not their eyes.
In the episode, we overview the primary features of TE as they relate to playing with a beautiful tone and intonation. Features include: single and polyphonic tuning drones, modeling just intonation in chords and melody, visualizing pitch, and more!

Philosophy:
Prioritize these...
Tone
Intonation
Balance/Blend
Melodic Accuracy
Rhythmic Accuracy
Expression/Phrasing
Technique/Articulation
Sound Over Sight
If we are asking students to use their ears, then why are we having them use their eyes?
Natural Learning - think about how children learn to speak. Through modeling from parental figures, constant repetition, and encountering these repetitions in various contexts.
Electronic tuners can only tune intervals of unisons and octaves accurately.
We are used to hearing the piano in its slightly “out-of-tune” tempered state.
Interval Adjustment
Pure intervals have varying degrees of adjustment from tempered intonation to make them in tune.
Scale Degree | Adjustment
1 | 0
2 | +3.9
3 | -13.7
4 | -2.0
5 | +2.0
6 | -15.6
7 | -11.7
8 | 0
We must teach our students to HEAR when something is out of tune by listening for beats. But how?
Resonant intonation is the result of two other important features: superior tone and balance.
Good tone comes first.
Learning balance is difficult in a room by yourself.
Use of an electric drone helps.
Turn the drone up to a level that equals the student.
Song based learning that utilizes lots of simple melodies in standard keys teaches students to understand basic consonance and dissonance.
Lots of repetition!!!
Patients!
Reinforce that one success does not mean that everything will be in tune from here on out.
Don’t strive for a perfect intonation system. Resist teaching students the theory of intervals and focus on them hearing consonance and dissonance through listening to the relationships of intervals.
Once you know what a 5th sounds like, you can tune it anywhere.
Avoid technical talk unless something is absolutely in a students way.
Daniel Kohut - Musical Performance: Learning Theory and Pedagogy
Superior Concept
Relaxed Concentration
Focused Awareness
Reasons teachers give up on teaching intonation this way...
Fear of other areas of musical performance failing - wrong notes, rhythm, poor technique, inability to execute musically. The solution to this - pick easier music!!!
Abstract nature of these skills make them less concrete to student minds and harder to teach.
This is a long road. It takes time. But! - the end reward is ultimately better because students own their critical listening skills and now make musical adjustments themselves, even to features in the music that are not tone and intonation related. Each year will have an upswing towards the end. Independent musicianship is the result.
Features of Tonal Energy
Overview of each feature and setting - Live Demo
Strategies
Everything with drone
All music taught around tonal centers
Students tune down to the tonic most immediately beneath where the majority of their part sits
Students write tonal centers in their method books and concert music
Analyze mode - Students practice scale patterns and songs in this sequence...
Visual and aural feedback
Aural feedback only
No drone at all
Practice Guide
You can balance to the drone
Tell students to match the volume of the drone at various levels.
A midi keyboard like the Xkey https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DU2VKV8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 can play certain key areas in tune perfectly and can automatically tune chords to just intonation. Combined with an iPad, this is like owning a Yamaha Harmony Director.
In rehearsal: Have students buzz along and find their place in the chord

Craig returns to the show to talk about how we manage tasks, and the apps we use to manage them. There is a strong emphasis here on two of the premium task apps for Mac and iOS, Things and OmniFocus.
This episode isn't so much a showdown between Craig and I or one app and another. It is more a celebration of the great features of pro task apps that we depend on to manage our teaching careers. For me, there is an ongoing showdown between these apps in my mind, as I constantly contemplate which tools best help my brain to stay focused on the task at hand. It was fun to process that with Craig.

Music Technology Teacher Podcast - with Katie Wardrobe
In this weeks episode, I am joined by Paul Shimmons (band director, music tech in education blogger, and podcaster). We have a great time talking about our various workflows for reading, editing, annotating, and organizing our PDFs. This episode was recorded shortly after the announcement of iOS 11 which will bring a lot of new productivity features to the iPad. Naturally, we had to discuss these announcements and how they might reshape our PDF workflows next fall.
This episode has chapters!!!! Using your podcast app of choice, skip to any topic in the episode by taping on the title of that chapter.

In place of a formal introduction, Chris and I launched straight into a discussion about our recording setups and how to successfully record using iOS devices*. Then we jump into over an hour of action packed information on scanning. Scanning documents. Scanning music. Scanning with scanners. Scanning with phones. OCRing text. Automatic handwriting recognition. Automatic music notation recognition. Doing it all on PCs, tablets, phones, you name it.

*This discussion was eye opening for me and I am glad I tried recording into my iPad for this episode but I would like to note that ...
1) Ferrite's touch editing interface was cumbersome enough for me that I ended up just doing it all in Logic Pro
and
2) Something about this setup resulted in a bit of a distorted sound on my voice which I did my best to clean up but apologize for.
Show Notes: Back at it again, with another work colleague! Orchestra Director, Ben Denne, joins the show to talk about cloud drive services, specifically, the strengths and weaknesses of the primary offerings and how our music team uses them to be productive.

Crash Plan
Season 2 is back!!! After a series of technical difficulties and a busy concert/conference presenting season, Episode 3 is ready!
This week my choral colleague, Nick Dogas, joins the show to discuss basic productivity in the music classroom. Topics include: managing an active teaching schedule using calendar apps, staying on top of email responsibilities, where technology helps (and doesn’t help), the role of attention, and more.
This was a fun one to record. All of my other guests this season are experts on the topics of each episode. I was having trouble finding someone who wanted to talk about the not-so-glamorous topics of email and calendars. Nick joked with me that he could come on as a tech-NON-expert and I loved the idea. Considering how differently each of us approaches our work, this episode turned into an interesting counterpoint about focus, attention, the problems that technology solves for unorganized people, and when it is best to just turn off the computer screen and get work done.
Note: Due to some issues recording this episode on an iPad, there are a few awkward edits and audio issues.

In Episode 2 Jon Tippens is back to talk about what I thought we were going to talk about in Episode 1, PDF Management. We discuss all of our discontents with managing this ubiquitos document that is significantly flexible on PCs but severely limited on mobile devices. We discuss where we run into friction with PDFs in our own process and what workflows we have devised to settle this problem.
But that's not all! First, we have a meta discussion about the intro music to this show and then proceed to analyze the intro to season 2 of True Detective (No Spoilers... sort of).
