Deconstructing Power
The question we are hoping to answer is this: How does Jesus’ view of power inform the way that we live?
What is something you currently can’t do but wish you could? Why?
Read Genesis 1:27-31. What do you think it means to bear the image of God in the world? When do you think you are at your best in representing God? When do you think you are at your worst?
Have you ever been on the receiving end of someone abusing their authority (power)? What was that like? How did that make you feel? Or What power structure in the world frustrates you the most? Why?
Read Matthew 20:20-28. Make some general observations about this passage. What stands out to you?
Where do you find yourself wanting to be seen a certain way the most? (ex. Church, home, work, hobbies, friends, family)
This week we made a distinction between worldly power and the power of grace. Worldly power is pursued through Pride, Control, and Greed. Which one do you struggle with the most? The power of Grace is pursued through Humility, Risk, and Service. Which one appeals to you the most? The least?
Spend some time encouraging one another by telling them something you see in them that they might not see in themselves.
