The first JSR 164 is JAIN (Java Advanced Intelligent Networking) SIMPLE (precise acronym unknown at present, but a superset of SIP - Session Initiation Protocol) Presence, and the second is JSR 165 - SIMPLE Instant Messaging. The two combine to provide instant messaging and presence awareness between devices using either the SIP or SIMPLE protocol
