As protest and pandemic overwhelm our news feeds, the power of language, storytelling and narrative-shaping has never been more apparent — or more important. Christina Blacken of The New Quo, a narrative intelligence consultancy, joins The Breadwinners to talk about how she works with leaders to connect with the values, emotions and needs of their listeners to get them where they need them to go — and why it’s so important to match story and narrative with lived action. “The stories that they tell, no matter how true they are or not, become the dominant narrative in the lexicon. That’s why we need to have counter-narratives so that we can inform people and stop that and focus on the real issues.” — Christina Blacken Episode Links Sway Them in Color podcast https://open.spotify.com/show/0pB6p8cte9I3ckSVFfGH4u?si=mXHsVsqMQQOXrLgfU7xC3g How Being 'Different' Helped These 14 Female Entrepreneurs Find Their Niche and Made Them More Successful https://www.businessinsider.com/how-being-different-made-14-female-entrepreneurs-more-successful-2020-3 Understanding and Dismantling Racism: A Booklist for White Readers https://www.charisbooksandmore.com/understanding-and-dismantling-racism-booklist-white-readers 75 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice https://medium.com/equality-includes-you/what-white-people-can-do-for-racial-justice-f2d18b0e0234 Want more Jennifer? Men today spend an estimated 18 hours per week on housework and childcare. While lower than women’s hours of unpaid work, it’s still much, much more than our fathers or grandfathers did at home. In this episode, Jennifer + Rachael consider the workplace stresses that impact dads in particular — and how this ripples into our home and family life. Breadwinning and parenting as the kids get older. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t get easier — nor does the math. Take this equation: schools close an average of 29 days a year, not counting summer vacations, while the average private-sector worker with paid leave has 16 days off in paid holidays and vacation. In this episode, Jennifer and Rachael consider the history of affordable child care and highlight ways some school systems are helping working parents add it up. Studies find that men still don’t spend as much time on household chores as their breadwinning wives. Indeed, in female-breadwinner households, the greater the income disparity, the less housework the husband does.
Except when it comes to cooking. Between 2002 and 2010, men upped the amount of time spent cooking each day — and the more their wives earned, the more time the men spent in the kitchen.
Jennifer and Rachael consider why cooking is men's favorite chore — and how doing the laundry and vacuuming can follow suit.

Despite the fact that infertility was officially designated a disease by the American Medical Association in 2017, full fertility treatments still aren’t covered by most company health insurance plans. Meanwhile, 73,000 babies were born in 2015 using assisted reproductive technologies, a number that has doubled in the last decade.
Jennifer and Rachael talk about the costs of infertility treatments — financial, emotional, and time — and what many of us feel you can (and can’t) talk about at work when it comes to infertility and miscarriages.

What is the mental load — and why do we persist in carrying so much of it? Research finds that women not only serve as parent and caretaker for their families, but also as the “unofficial keepers of where the entire family needs to be and when, and perpetual guardians against anything falling through the cracks.”
Jennifer + Rachael consider the invisible weight that hides in plain sight and how to let go of at least a bit of it.
