Learn For 2 Podcast: Recent Episodes

Brandon DeVere

Here's the thing. After being in the Real Estate Industry for over a decade, I realized the OLD model was broken.

There was NO way out, NO end in sight.

So, I decided to ditch the masses and create my own opportunity.

One that would put myself and others, in a position to retire when WE want to.

This podcast, is my journey to help as many people as possible, do the same.

My name is Brandon DeVere and welcome to the Learn For 2 Podcast

After over a year hiatus, I learned that I love to continue sharing my knowledge with others.

So I decided to reboot the podcast and keep it simple while adding a couple of items to the show, including video and transcription.

I will likely update the intro and possibly the cover art.

But the mission will stay the same.

I will continue to learn with the intent to teach to others. I am just adding more ways to do so.

Looking forward to having you on this journey with me.

I was sitting here working in my office this morning and Wayne Purser calls.

He says, "start recording this conversation".

I said, "Uh... ok".

When we were rolling  he started in on an interview I was not prepared for.

A Tip of the hat to you Wayne.

What Can We Learn From From Sports

What can an unconventional double play in last night's Braves/Dodgers game can teach us about life and business?

I will be honest, I am not as much of a baseball fan as I used to be, the Mariners have kind of ruined for me.

If it weren't for living in Las Vegas and having the chance to bet on it, I'm not sure I'd still be watching.

But last's game was incredible and one play stood out to me that, in my opinion, is the epitome of teamwork, and the importance of aligning with the right individuals that make up your team.

A team that is ALL-IN when pursuing a collective goal.

A team that relies on the individual strengths of each other.

This one play was made up of 4 distinct criteria that I believe to be critical to function as one, instead of just a collection of individuals operating on their own terms and agendas.

These criteria are as follows and happened in this order on that play:

The Plan

The Execution

The Communication

The Trust

So let's break it down...

The Play - There were runners on second and third after the ball was hit, the runner on third got caught in a rundown (pickle).

The Plan - Just we were taught in Little League the catcher started chasing the runner back to 3rd base getting it to the 3rd basemen just in time to get the runner to start running in the opposite direction.

The Execution - With the ball in the 3rd basemen's glove he was able to dive forward toward home plate and tag the runner out. (Out #1)

The Communication - As the 3rd baseman (Turner) hits the ground, he instantly pops up, spins around to fire a dart to the shortstop (Seager) who was standing on 3rd base that happened to be at Turner's 6 O'clock. Basically directly behind him, away from where he was diving.

Turner could not see behind him. In all likelihood, Seager was yelling something like "3! 3! 3!" directing him where to throw it.

The Trust - Turner popped up, spun around, and fired the ball to 3rd base without hesitation where Seager applied the tag. (Out #2)

It started off with the PLAN they have in place for this type of situation, then they EXECUTED it perfectly by getting the first out.

this was followed by the COMMUNICATION, with Seager being the eyes for Turner as he's diving away from him, facing the opposite way.

The cherry on top was the TRUST by Turner that Seager was where he said he'd be, and also the trust of Seager that Turner could make that throw in the moment without it ending up in left field.

This single play has now gotten me back into enjoying baseball and how important it is when I'm building my real estate organization.

I don't want just ANY players.

I want the one the ones that are ALL-IN when it comes to the vision of the PLAN, are ready to EXECUTE and COMMUNICATE, and most importantly the ones that are willing to build the foundation on TRUST.

Many times we want to criticize athletes and be upset about the amount of money they make to play "just a game".

But, if we look close enough, we can find some incredible lessons being taught that can be applied to many facets of our lives.

The excitement I felt from this play had me thinking...

What Can We Learn From From Sports?

"I Couldn’t Get Caught Up In Everything That I Wasn't”

This is what Tanner Swanson, Catching Coach of the New York Yankees told me about his success.

Realizing that there were some “boxes" he knew he would never be able to check, regardless of how much effort he put into them.

Understanding this, he decided to focus on his strengths and become the best version of himself at every level.

This attitude led him directly to a seat at “The Show”, where he walks the clubhouse and smells the fresh cut grass on game day getting to watch some of the best athletes in the game.

He realizes he’s not only living his dreams but the dreams of others, and that is definitely not lost on him.

Not only has he earned his seat with the big boys he’s making quite a name for himself by challenging the traditions of Major League Baseball.

A sport that takes great pride in it’s stats and history, making the traditionalists not very eager to accept or even listen to ideas of change.

But when Tanner identified a flaw in the way catchers have been playing the game for decades, he couldn’t be ignored.

With the style and strategies being implemented by Tanner, the game, as far as catchers are concerned, has changed.

Last year there was only one catcher in the MLB that was using this new strategy, and that catcher reached out to Tanner directly to help fix his game.

Fast forward to today and almost half of the catchers in the league have adopted this style.

Although Tanner lacked experience on the field as a Major League player that was actually a benefit for him.

He didn’t carry any preconceptions or biases that could have come along with that experience.

This gave him a clean slate and the ability to look at the position with an open mind and ask himself, “maybe this could work”.

By not leaning on, “this is how we’ve always done it” and challenging tradition he has been able change the way the catcher position is being played at the highest level, and who knows, maybe the way it will be played forever.

What struck me most about this conversation with Tanner about him following his dreams, his quest for being the best at whatever it is he was doing at the time, and battling decades old traditions, was the humility, passion and pride that he possesses.

You can see it in his smile when he tells you that he coaches for the New York Yankees.

Once again, just by putting myself and my story out there, someone has shared an interest in what I'm doing.

2 days ago I had someone reach out to me on Linkedin to take a look at a service they were offering.

It turns out it has some similarities to what I was doing with my new podcast.

While this was technically a sales call, it didn't feel like it. It felt like a collaboration.

And by the end of the call, we were brainstorming how we could benefit each other.

I could have easily said, "no thanks, I don't have time".

But because I didn't, now a possibility that a new opportunity to present itself is possible.

If you are looking to grow, sometimes you need to just take the call.

Sometimes I end up over-committing to things.

I have been doing it all of my life.

I say yes to so many things that it causes me to be all over the place and my focus suffers.

To help with that, I started a 21 day Time Management challenge... and I missed the first day. How is that for irony.

I also hired a coach to help me with these struggles.

Now is the time to get better at my weaknesses.

This may sound ridiculous but sometimes plans are overrated.

Like when you spend all day planning and never get anything done, what's the point.

Today I sat down with an Investor builder that has heard the podcast and we are now going to be working together.

I never sat down and said, "I'm going to start this podcast to gain a relationship with an investor/builder".

I just showed up everyday and an opportunity presented itself.

The only plan I had in place was to show up and do a podcast 5 days a week.

And the opportunity presented itself in this form.

Is it worth it?

I often see people take unnecessary risks and I'm not sure why it is that they do it.

When I was a server at a restaurant at the Four Seasons hotel, we always had to write down the order.

We weren't taking a chance that we'd forget something in someone's order just to say that we were able to memorize.

Especially when you have a very simple tool in order to ensure that you got it right.

That exact thing happened to me today, someone took my order but wasn't writing it down.

I even thought to myself, "she isn't writing this down, is she going to forget something?".

Turns out, yep, she forgot something. The main ingredient that I went there for.

Happy Anniversary!

1 year ago today I launched the Learn For 2 podcast with 3 pillars and 1 goal in mind.

  1. To document my journey to build an international real estate team.
  2. To learn with the intent to teach to others
  3. To find my voice for those who need it

The 1 goal was to do it 5 days a week.

365 days later I have increased my team from a size of 45 to 180, I have taught people how to create their own podcast, and I have shared vulnerable stories that others needed to hear.

And by focusing on just 5 episodes a week, I sit here at episode #263 reflecting on what I’ve learned over the last year.

I’ve learned how important micro commitments are. I first heard this just over a year ago from Jon Cheplak.

By adopting this ideology I only focused on the next episode, instead of the entire 263.

I’ve learned that when you make something “non-negotiable” you find a way to do it.

I have recorded episodes in my home office, the skate park, my car at my daughter’s soccer practice, and even on the beach in Mexico to make sure that I got it done.

I’ve learned that I am still building a legacy and I am still a connector.

I've learned it is ok to tell people that everything is NOT perfect and it is ok to let my guard down.

I’ve learned that someone “out there” is waiting for you to be vulnerable and share something personal that they may be going through, so they don’t feel alone.

I’ve interviewed one of my best friend’s Nick McLean, and learned that even if we think our conversation will only be 25 minutes we will record for an hour and a half.

I've learned that depression is even deeper and darker than I thought from Scott Mendell.

I’ve learned from Clifford Duvernois that impacting 1 million people is an attainable goal, and I believe 100% that he will accomplish it.

I’ve learned that Eric Verdi is on a mission to pull a superhero skill out of each and every person he meets and shine their signal bright into the night sky for those who need it.

I’ve learned a ton of things this last year and I have grown both personally and professionally from this experience, but what I’ve learned most is that it is ok to be wrong.

It is ok to BE wrong but it is not ok to STAY wrong.

I’ve learned that I can change my ideologies and beliefs based on new information.

I’ve learned that I don’t need to “double-down” on what I once believed just to be right.

I’d rather get it right.

I’ve learned that this podcast will be a journal for my kids, grandkids, and really anyone who may need it for years to come.

Is it perfect?

Not even close, but it’s me and I’ve shared it with you, I’ve shared it with thousands.

One year later I’ve realized this…

I will continue to grow. I will continue to change. I will continue to be wrong. I will continue to evolve. I will continue to become.

Because when I stop continuing doing all of these things, I will not continue at all.

Ever notice when you see or learn something new it starts popping up all over?

That happened to me today.

While I read The Heart Of The Soul and learn how to understand myself more, I get reintroduced to the DISC profile.

Both of which help you understand others better.

But more importantly, they help you understand yourself better.

How you can learn more effectively, what situations you thrive in, and how you communicate with others.

It can be a little nerve-wracking but in the end, can be a major improvement on your life.

It is easy to say that we have the ability to control how we feel about the things that happen to us.

But it is another thing to actually be able to respond by putting that idea into action.

I have been reading the book The Heart Of The Soul recently and it talks about gaining control of your emotions.

It says to quit being a victim of your experiences and start being the creator of your experiences.

Yes... easier said than done.

But this is a skill that I would love to master.

I spoke with an agent today about how we run our businesses.

It was a great conversation, mainly because we do it differently.

But the most important thing is that we are doing what works well for "us".

She does things that I don't and I do things that she doesn't. It was an eye-opener to remind me that just because someone does something and is good at it, doesn't mean that it works for everyone.

Find what works for you and ask yourself this...

Do I like doing it? Is it getting a good return? Can I stay consistent doing it?

If the answer is yes to all of these, keep crushing it.

Today while recording videos for a course, I realized something.

Just because something is bigger, doesn't make it better.

We all have access to all of the information we could ever want.

But most of us, like myself, want that information packaged in a way that it can be useful.

I know there are courses that take days, weeks, and even months to complete.

No doubt there is a ton of information in them, but if you never end up completing it or implementing what is in them... then what is the point.

That is why I decided to create a results-based course.

One that can be easily digested, and even more easily implemented.

Today I received the first edit back from my book.

I read a couple of the comments and I was immediately defensive.

'What do you mean that doesn't make sense?"

The reality is, I chose someone not close to me to edit my book so they could give me accurate feedback.

Not someone that wanted to tell me how great it was so they didn't hurt my feelings.

Initially, I couldn't handle the truth but after I realized it was for my own good...

I understood I needed constructive criticism.

Quick update about the client who broke up with me.

As well as why we have the need to have explanations to unexplainable things.

When we don't know WHY something happens, we tend to build a narrative that will explain why it did.

Sometimes there is a perfect explanation for it but we can't wait to hear it before we start making up our own theories as to what happened.

And a successful trip to Salt Lake City.

Today was great!

I got a new agent to fill out an application to join the team and they are very excited to get rolling.

But yesterday was different.

I had a client, the day after showing the houses for the first time text me that they had found a new agent.

I had a couple of ways I could respond.

Get mad and try to talk them back into working with me, keep moving forward and focus on my growth, or pack up shop and quit.

You probably already know what I did.

Our #1 excuse is always, "I don't have time".

Can you spare 10 minutes a day for the next year?

If you can, that will give you 3,650 minutes, which equals  60 hours you can focus on what it is you want to accomplish.

Just that little amount of time can be a huge improvement on yourself.

When I first got into real estate I was so excited about the opportunity to collaborate with others that thought like me.

Unfortunately, that wasn't really the case.

Not until about 2 years ago did I get the real opportunity to collaborate.

Now I'm in the process of building something special that we will be able to provide to others to help them succeed.

Finally, I get to collaborate.

Today I was scheduled to do a training class, and although I prepared for it, things just didn't go as planned.

After a 15 minute late start due to technical difficulties, I was playing "catch up" and fell way behind.

Causing me to scramble to put the pieces back together.

I had 3 options:

1) Quit right there.

2) Make a ton of excuses

3) Absorb the hits and battle through, completing the class.

Although I wanted to quit, I didn't.

I did, however, make excuses unfortunately.

But ultimately, I stuck it out and finished the class.

Maybe not the best class ever, but I finished, and as we know...

Done is better than perfect.

Today as we celebrate our freedom here in the U.S. I think about the reason most of us got into the real estate industry.

Most of us got into the industry to have freedom.

Freedom in our careers.

Freedom in our personal lives.

Freedom to do what we want to do, when we want to do it.

Freedom to work on and in our business how we see fit.

Freedom to make as much money as we want.

But as we have worked so hard for this freedom, how many of us have actually found it.

Are you still bound to work with whatever clients you get because you can’t afford NOT to work with them?

Are you stuck at your brokerage because they provide you leads and you haven’t learned how to generate your own?

Are you stuck at your brokerage because you think you are getting 100% of your commissions?

Is your growth limited geographical by the chains of an OLD and OUTDATED model?

Think back to when you entered the real estate industry…

Was freedom a part of your business plan? Is it still?

If so, how close are you to achieving it?

If not, how come?

Last night when I received the contract for their services my name was misspelled not once, but twice.

I corrected the error and sent it back. I had edited the editor.

This morning the editor was so embarrassed but OWNED the mistake while providing solutions to prevent it from happening again.

After owning up to it and offering solutions, I was even more willing to use their services.

In Napoleon Hill's Think And Grow Rich, he states...

"General knowledge, no matter how great in quantity or variety it may be, is of but little use in the accumulation of money"

I was reminded of this over the past couple of days.

My computer went in to be fixed and the cost will be $430, even though the actual part being changed is only $130.

But because the man with the service repair company possesses a specialized knowledge in a certain field, being an "authorized" servicer, he has the ability to charge what he wants.

I have 4 choices...

1) Not have it fixed and just deal with it.

2) Buy a new computer.

3) Try to fix it myself and run the risk of ruining it.

4) Pay him to do the task for me and limit the risk of killing the computer.

I chose to suck it up and pay the man for his knowledge and skill set.

He spent the time to learn and acquire the skillset necessary to charge a certain price.

Recently I have had major issues with my internet and computers.

I'm not really sure how I have even been able to function with them until this point.

Now that I know what is available, I can't believe what I was actually able to accomplish with such a low level of tools to be used.

It reminds me of the NCAA tournament when young "no-name" teams end up beating some of the perennial big-name colleges, mainly because they don't know that they aren't supposed to be losing to these other teams.

Sometimes when you don't know your limits you can be greater than others believe you to be.

He wasn't very excited about it and told me that he didn't really want to get one.

He told me that it was going to take up a too munch mental real estate worrying about it.

He was excited that he'd be spending all of that time focused on worrying about a boat.

What I learned about myself today is that I don't operate in a single way.

On one hand, I want to know where we are going before I start following directions. I don't like just being told, "turn left", "turn right", I want to know the destination.

On the other hand, I love to start gathering tools I'll need just based on an idea.

Today I bought 6 domain names based solely on an idea that I have. I don't know the end destination.

The main point is this...

I am not "this" or "that", and I learn in that same way. Sometimes I learn better through words or video, other times I need to hear it.

Ultimately, it is ok to not be pigeonholed into one or the other.

You don't have to be one or the other.

Just be you.

A couple of weeks ago there were some very insensitive comments made by CrossFit Founder and Owner, Greg Glassman.

Being a CrossFit affiliate, James Stella was caught off guard and immediately was upset. And rightfully so.

He then reached out to me so that he could get his message out. This was not something that the CrossFit community found acceptable.

James wanted others to know where he and other members of the CrossFit community stood, and that value that they place on inclusivity.

This conversation is raw and came on the heels of the controversial statements.

Since then, there have been changes in the CrossFit world, including Glassman stepping down, and now putting the brand up for sale and possibly having already sold it.

I met with an agent friend today and we discussed business.

I believe she has an incredible talent and is somewhat undervalued for her unique skillset.

When we spoke about her broker, I realized that she is in an environment of scarcity. He is worried about people stealing her ideas.

He is burning calories and spending valuable energy focusing on NOT sharing ideas and the growth of others, instead of focusing on collaboration, and making others better.

This is very disappointing, especially coming from a person that should be most interested in the success of his agents.

A while ago I decided that I didn't need to read MORE books, I needed to read books MORE.

What I mean by that is that I would shuffle from book to book, just to say that I read them.

But what I really needed to do was get more out of the books I already have.

This is a paragraph from the book I am reading for the 3rd time while reinforcing the message with an audiobook.

This paragraph comes from "Building An Empire" by Brian Carruthers.

I knew many people who have time and no money, and they are unhappy. I knew many people who have money and no time, and they are unhappy. I knew few who have both time and money together, which creates true freedom. That was what I was after. In real estate, I felt like I would never be able to let up off the gas pedal to enjoy life without my income slowing down too. In the real estate business as a broker, I would be the only one getting to benefit from leverage when the agents made sales. I felt bad that the agents were all on perpetual treadmills, with one broker getting the chance to earn from other people's efforts. So if I recruited an agent to come work for us selling houses, I was simply helping them onto the treadmill. That didn't sit well with me, especially now that I knew of a better way.

The good news is that there is always room to improve.

That seemed to be very significant and was weighing on my mind.

That is... until I received a message from my neighbor asking if I could talk outside real quick.

As we started talking, she told me about an older man that was just outside that was apparently filming the kids on his phone.

Now my attention was changed.

Today I was on a chat with both Godaddy and Namecheap.

Both companies in which I have hosted domains.

Most everyone has heard of Godaddy, while I am sure not as many have heard of Namecheap.

This could be a David vs Goliath type situation.

Godaddy has no doubt been everywhere including NASCAR and The Superbowl.

It is a household name among anyone wanting to name their website.

How could anyone ever compete with them?

I will tell you how, by solving problems and treating people respectively.

This was a stark difference for me just a few hours ago.

Maybe Godaddy is "Top Dog" in their industry but they can be beaten.

Just as in your industry, whatever it is.

There are the ones that happen to close more deals, land more clients, and have a bigger budget.

But you can compete as well.

Start solving problems and treating people respectively and watch your business grow.

With a successful finance career in Israel, Eyal decided he'd like to move to the states.

Once here he and his partner started buying homes and flipping them.

When they first started, they were contracting the work out to other construction companies.

After realizing that they weren't satisfied with the quality of work that was being performed, they decided it was only appropriate for them to be in charge of the rehabs as well.

So they decided to create a construction company that would handle all of the repairs.

After 5 years and over 1,000 projects completed, some that were partial remodels, others that were new additions, and even some that had been burnt to the ground, they noticed a need from the public.

They would then form a company that could service individual clients in the residential arena, making their services available for all homeowners to take advantage of.

Their belief in quality work and their extensive experience is what sets them apart.

Multitasking is overrated and inefficient...

At least for me.

I have been lacking in productivity, mainly due to a lack of focus.

I'm not sure about you, but trying to multitask has left me further from my goals than I'd care to admit.

It is time to get laser focused.

Today I talk about the time my dad wouldn't let me take my swimsuit to my cousin's house and how I made my son take his with us yesterday, even though we weren't necessarily swimming.

I just wanted him to be able to go swimming if the opportunity should present itself.

It reminded me of why this podcast is for more than just me.

It is a platform for those who need to share their voice?

Today I spoke with a home inspector about his findings on a listing I just sold.

I asked him how he did a couple things and he was instantly on the defensive.

Keep in mind I wasn't questioning his quality of work, I was just looking for more information so that I could come to a more clear conclusion and do so quickly.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt because I did introduce myself as the "Other" agent on a house that he just inspected.

No one ever makes that call to say, "hey, how'ya doin", so I can understand why he wouldn't be so eager to talk.

But the point remains that the intent of the phone call was to get more information, not to call him out on his findings.

He said that his "tools" picked up a leak, but logistics and lack of water seemed to contradict those findings.

As of this time, there is no leak that we can find, the plumber will be going out to check, so I will keep you updated.

“This is why we created this brewery, to see families like yours enjoying themselves”

This is what Mark, a patron, with his family and dog heard while sitting on the patio.

Griff, one of the owners said this to him, explaining WHY he and Nate built Mojave Brewing Company this way.

After they had both ended their successful teaching careers, Nate and Griff decided it was time to pursue their passion.

So they had a vision of what the perfect brewery would be. One that could have families, dogs, and people spending the last hour of their workday enjoying a pint as a community…

As one, as a whole.

With their idea, vision, and determination, Mojave Brewing Company was born.

The amount of thought and care that has gone into making this destination a place where ALL can come together is amazing.

**From the decor, the layout, the widened bar tops for those looking for a place to set their computer, to the attention to detail within the recipes of their beer, you can tell they have poured their heart and soul into this project.

I was lucky enough to experience this from an up close perspective.**

Beer and Cider may be WHAT they do, but Community is WHY they do it.

Watch this interview and get a chance to know Nate and Griff like I did. Then go to Mojave Brewing Company grab a pint.

You won’t be disappointed.

As my videographer and I were putting in some final edits, we both got dizzy, looked at each other and said...

"Was that an earthquake?"

Short answer.

Sure was.

It brought me back to a time when I had experienced my first earthquake and had no idea what to do.

After we moved on from that slight delay we got back at creating value for an awesome local business.

The video is done and will be out soon.

What Were You Going To Do Today?

This is what my friend asked me today as we sat on his couch.

He asked me half-jokingly because he knew I wasn't getting anything done today.

He had called me a few hours earlier asking me to come to pick him up.

On that phone call he said...

"Can you come to my house, I might need a ride to the hospital too. I have blood on my forehead".

I told him I'd be on my way and hung up the phone.

As I approached his house, I saw the damage. His car stopped in the middle of the street, spun around, airbag deployed, and broken car pieces everywhere.

He was on his way to get a cup of coffee and someone pulled out right in front of him.

So, he called me to come help him and I spent the day with him. That is why he asked,

"What Were You Going To Do Today?

In Simon Sinek's book, "Start WIth Why" he explains that people don't buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.

He also says, "without WHY, any attempt at authenticity will almost always be inauthentic".

This explains that the WHAT is just the vehicle in which we deliver our WHY.

For real estate agents the WHAT is selling homes. The WHY might be to help families realize their dream of homeownership.

For someone going to the gym, the WHAT is the exercise. The WHY could be that their father died at 50 of a heart attack and they want to remain healthy.

Or in this case, when I interviewed Nate and Griff of Mojave Brewing Company, Their WHAT was brewing beer. Their WHY was creating a community feel where families and customers finishing their day could come in and enjoy the atmosphere while having a pint or 2.

I know we always want to keep it positive and say, "keep moving forward".

Well, sometimes just moving is good enough.

Didn't get to everything on your "to-do" list? If you got to some of it you can still consider yourself productive.

As long as you showed up and kept moving, you are still being productive.

This week was kind of blah for me.

I didn't get as much done as I wanted, but I got enough done to keep the momentum.

When you stop completely is when you have to worry.

So whether it is forward, backward, left, or right...

Just keep moving.

I'm not your hero...

Nor should I try to be.

Yet, we are constantly trying to be the hero for others, when the reality is, they are the hero.

We just need to be their guide.

My overall goal is to connect people with the things that I think will make them successful, regardless of what it is they are trying to do.

If they are looking for a good beer, I tell them about a brewery I like. If they want to join a gym, I tell them about one that I like.

It is that simple. I am a connector...

I am a guide.

One of the most common questions I get during my podcast class is this:

Should I order a mic to start my podcast?

My answer is always this…

Will not having a mic prevent you from starting your podcast?

If your answer is “yes”, then my answer is “no”.

Just get it started.

To prove that point, I went onto OfferUp and looked for a USB microphone.

There happened to be one for sale for $5, and it happened to say, “Disney” on it.

Perfect!

So I recorded this episode of my podcast on a Disney mic that I bought for $5.

Don’t overcomplicate things…

Just get started.

Many times we have certain intentions, but sometimes the way they are received is much different.

I had a conversation today that I received as negative, and I'm not sure it is. It was just how I received it.

In addition to how are comments perceived, we can also make snap judgments based on the information we have about someone.

This can be based on something as simple as a title they hold.

Just by knowing this, our conversation can be derailed and never get deep into conversation with an opportunity to learn.

Ego is a funny thing.

It's not always what we think it is.

Sometimes it comes in the form of bragging about ourselves, other times it comes in the form of the need to BE right, instead of getting it right.

In my case right now, it comes in the form of what someone thinks my intentions are.

I know we usually want to act tough and say, "I don't care what people think".

But that's a lie.

Human nature has us care what people think.

But I do believe there is a volume of our ego that we can control.

One of the best things about teaching people to do a podcast is when they actually launch their own.

But something else that is even more exciting to me, is when they decide they can be themselves.

They don't have to be this perfect version for everyone else to see.

One of the agents I taught to do a podcast, Julie Baker just launched her podcast called Positive Identity yesterday.

Although that made me very proud, there was something else that made me feel incredibly good.

After listening to one of my episodes, she said, "You gave me permission to be my authentic self".

That is an incredible feeling for me, and selfishly, it's part of what drives me to continue to teach these classes.

"Agility"

Just over 2 years ago I watched Glenn Sanford share his vision from the stage at the Shareholder Summit, here in Las Vegas.

When he finished, I patiently waited for him to emerge from backstage because I needed to pick his brain.

I had to ask him 2 questions:

  1. How many books a year do you read?

  2. What book are you reading right now?

The book he told me that he was reading was, “Agility”.

Or formally titled “Agility: How to Navigate the Unknown and Seize Opportunity in a World of Disruption"

As we approach the upcoming Shareholder Summit, it couldn’t be more fitting that this was the book he was reading when I asked.

You see, this event was supposed to take place in Orlando, but for obvious reasons it won’t be, we had to adjust.

But it wasn’t canceled either.

With his ability to “navigate the unknown”, Glen has positioned our company to seize opportunity in a world of disruption.

And even better, he has invited any agent of any brokerage to attend this event at no cost.

Most agents will read this and think they already “Know” what eXp Realty is about, and will never take the time to research it correctly because their ego will get in the way, and that is fine, they can continue to do what they are doing.

But if you are one of those agents that is constantly looking to improve and recognize that this man was studying about what to do in times like these over 2 years ago, so that his agents and company would be prepared to handle it the best possible way.

Then I encourage you to attend this free event that is open to ALL agents.

If you want to attend, and be educated, PM me and I will get you your pass.

If you decide to go or not, just remember we are in this together and I will be rooting for your success.

Good luck to ALL!

I thought it would be easier than this... I was wrong.

When I set out to interview local business owners. the idea was simple.

Get people to know who they are, through their own words. Then get that message out for the community to hear.

I capped the number of interviews to start with at 10 because I was a little hesitant about the logistics of getting an interview out for everyone that wanted one.

After the first interview, I was already a day behind on what I was trying to do. Now it is time to adjust and streamline the process.

I had a plan, then got punched in the face.

This post was in a Facebook Group I belong to this morning:

"Whats your (nice) response to realtors when they try to recruit you?r (nice) response to realtors when they try to recruit you?”

I was blown away by the majority of the responses that came in the comments.

The post couldn’t have been more timely.

I shared this story with you last week about the "3 main components of opportunity”.

The reason that I was so blown away, is because many of the comments were dismissing the message before it could even be presented.

Remember last week, when I said that the first step in receiving opportunity was for it to present itself.

Dismissing it before you even hear it just blocks the first step of opportunity.

For some reason, in this industry, we all want to believe we know it ALL.

Our ego has a way of getting in the way of our true potential.

I don’t know about you but, if your opportunity is better than where I’m at, I want to know about it. I don’t ever want my ego to get in the way of my growth.

I’ve done that before and it has cost me greatly.

Right now, in this very moment in time, we have an incredible opportunity to really look at, and research what others are doing.

How are they being successful?

What marketing are they doing? What models are they using? What Tools, Strategies, and Technology are they leveraging?

I guarantee you that there is someone doing something that you are not, and they are having great success.

Are you willing to restrict your growth and sacrifice your success because you aren’t willing to hear a different or new idea?

Just because things have always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean they are the most efficient or even relevant.

As Rick Warren said about the rapid growth in his new church, in his book “The Purpose-Driven Church”

“We’ve been able to experiment with far more Ideas than the average church - mostly due to the fact that we didn’t have decades of tradition to deal with”

So, next time an opportunity is trying to present itself, will you dismiss it at the expense of your growth…

Or…

Will you be open enough to see if it can support your growth, moving it to the 2nd stage of opportunity?

Recognizing it.

As we try to articulate our value to others, the message often gets blurred.

Not that our value proposition isn’t any good, it’s just that people get confused when we offer them “everything” at once.

As Russell Brunson says, “A confused mind always says no”

Try simplifying each message to focus on 1 aspect of your business at a time.

Yesterday, as I was talking about the car accidents that Eva and I had been in, in just over a year, my brother-in-law had just been run off the road and hit a tree.

His face would hit the windshield, and lucky for all of us, he would only suffer some stitches, bruises and a concussion.

I saw photos of the car...

It could have been way worse.

But after I heard about what happened, I started some self-reflection.

I started to ask myself, "if I went now, would I have accomplished what I've set out to.

The answer was a resounding, "No".

What I also realized was, I'm doing better than I think I am.

Although, I'm not where I want to be, with pretty much every aspect of my life, I understand that most people aren't.

And that's ok.

It is really hard to become who you are trying to become.

So to you I say,

"You are doing better than think you are"

After yesterday's episode with Brent Gove are started thinking about his comment about looking at the "model" instead of the "company".

There is no doubt that the company I work for  gets it's fair share of negativity, ant some of it is warranted.

The real challenge is that the people who could have benefited most from it, might be "passing" on the opportunity because of the way they were originally approached.

This, in my opinion is is the biggest downside.

For those that are worried about building a business that includes generating income from other agents production, I ask you this...

Would you turn down a referral fee to another agent because you simply provided them a lead? They will be doing all of the work, but will likely have no problem paying you 25% of their commission.

My prediction, is that you'd have no problem doing that. Probably because it is the norm.

So why is it such a concern to refer a company, and be compensated with a referral fee?

In this episode, I share 3 stories of how the model I looked at, and joined, has put me in position to create an additional revenue stream.

Here it is. Episode #200

“You Need To Start Coming From A Place Of Contribution”

While I sat in a crowd of 1,000+ people conference in Dallas in March of 2019, I felt as if I were the only one in the room.

As Brent Gove was speaking these words from the stage, I couldn’t help but feel that he was speaking directly to me.

It really couldn’t have come at a better time, this was something I needed to hear.

At the time, I was focused on building my International Real Estate team. It was going well, but there was one major flaw…

I was only focused on myself and “what’s in it for ME”.

How could I build MY organization?

How could “I” grow faster?

How could “I” benefit most?

But when Brent said those words, I felt like a spotlight was shining on me, telling me that is was time to contribute in some way.

Accepting that mission, I needed to figure out how I would contribute to others, in a positive way.

Then it hit me!

I love to learn, and I love to share what I’ve learned with others. Sometimes if they want to listen to me or not.

So I decided to create a podcast that I would record every Monday through Friday and consist of 3 pillars.

  1. Learn with the intent to teach to others.
  2. Document my journey to build an international real estate team.
  3. Find my voice for those needing to hear it.

With that in mind, the Learn For 2 podcast was born.

Combined with Brent’s inspiration to come from a place of contribution, and Jon Cheplak’s philosophy of micro-commitments, here I sit at 200 episodes.

200 was never the goal.

It is just a result of a micro-commitment that I made to myself, and a shift in mindset, to start…

Coming from a place of contribution.

Today I heard this quote by Brian Covey...

"Action Over Feelings"

What he was saying was that, regardless of how you are feeling, there is only one thing you need to do right now. And that is to...

Take Action.

In order for any other steps, tasks, or goals to be completed, it must first start with action

This reminded me of my first Ragnar Trail race I competed in.

When I decided that I would train for this run I was completely out of shape and didn't even know where to begin.

If you aren't familiar with this run, here's a breakdown.

You create your team of 8 runners, set up camp in the middle of the camping area, depending on the course you chose it may be different. The course we ran was in Zion Utah at Ponderosa Ranch.

Each runner has to complete 3 different loops, their length and difficulty are labeled Green (easy), Yellow (medium), Red (hard) totaling about 17 miles. You likely will not run them in that order.

Once your team starts, you do not stop until every team member completes each trail. So you will most likely be running in the middle of the woods, in the middle of the night, with nothing but a headlamp to guide your way through the trails.

You heard me say 17 miles right?

After not being able to even run 17 feet without being out of breath, how in the hell was I going to complete 17 miles?

Although I didn't know how I was going to do it, I just knew I was going to do it.

That was my first step to action.

The next would be how that one step to action led to a mindset that could not be stopped.

I got to a point, that even though I didn't feel like training on any given day, I would just take action.

As soon as my foot left the driveway, in my head that run was over.

Not saying that I stopped and didn't do it.

In my head it was complete. It took 1 step to complete a 1 mile run or a 10 mile run.

Both of those runs started with that single step, and had the same outcome.

Although I didn't feel like running on some of those days that I did, was because I took...

You've likely heard me say, "Done is better than Perfect".

While I do believe that 100%, I also don't believe that you just head into something blindly either.

Sure, having something complete is better than not having it complete, but I feel there is a point where you have to plan it out at least a little.

For instance, if I wanted to start a podcast and had no idea how to do it, I might think all I need is a microphone.

In reality, I will need a microphone, plus something to record it and a way to broadcast it.

The point is for others to hear it, whether it is perfect or not.

If I'm speaking into a microphone and it is not recording or broadcasting because I didn't know I needed those important aspects to it, then it's not even done, so it can't be perfect.

All I'm saying is that, even though we don't need perfection, we still need to plan... At least a little.

I'm still on a "Leadership High" after that interview with Nick McLean.

I have been constantly thinking of the ways that people have the ability to lead.

Some big, some small.

And the ability to lead can involve you leading yourself.

Today Eva, took a chance on something, something that is way out of her comfort zone.

But, she took a chance, one that she would typically not bother with.

To say that I am proud of her for this risk that she has taken on would be an understatement.

She is leading by letting others know that, they too, can take a risk.

lead·er·ship

/ˈlēdərˌSHip/

-the action of leading a group of people or an organization.

Nick McLean, Founder and Owner of the Nick McLean Real Estate Group sits down with me to discuss what leadership means to him.

What does leadership look like?

Many times we think leadership is about perfection, drive, motivation, and discipline.

Confusing actual leadership with some overwhelming concept that only few a have been chosen to undertake.

Believing it is some unreachable phenomenon, that you must be born with.

The reality is, it is something that is earned and must be maintained as your responsibilities increase.

Now, that can sound like it is a lot of work and at times can be overwhelming or scary.

But, not all leadership comes in the form of a motivational speech, a strong lecture, taking a bullet for the team, or appearing to be perfect or without flaws.

Sometimes, leadership is about getting someone back on track, reminding them to get back to their routine and act “As-If”

As-if, it were a normal day and you were going to the office.

“Do that and you’ll get back on track, and be ready for the next move"

Yes, leadership can absolutely come in the form of the most epic motivational speech you’ve ever heard, or showing your team that you can be strong during a tough time and be someone they can lean on.

But, it doesn’t always require the strongest person, with the most accolades, and the loudest voice.

Sometimes it is a simple nudge in the right direction or a small amount of responsibility to be placed on someone.

Leaders aren’t born, they are created.

You can be a leader too.

Today I was taught that leadership doesn't have to be a massive event.

It can be something as simple as reminding someone to stick to their routine.

It can be getting someone just to the next step, it doesn't have to be putting someone on a whole new path.

Also, I was notified by one of the agents that has taken my challenge to get a podcast up and running that she has her first episode up and live.

She told me by saying, "OMG! I've got a Podcast on Spotify!"

You have no idea how satisfying this is to me. And to say that I am proud would be an understatement.

“Cut the Cord"

I have been working on a goal for the last year and a half.

That goal, is to not be geographically tied to where and how I make a living.

I don’t want to be forced to move somewhere I don’t want to live in order to take a new job.

I don’t want to be forced to stay somewhere I don’t want to live to keep a job.

I want the freedom to choose both.

Where I work and where I live.

Lucky for me, I've found it.

But even better, I’ve found it for others as well.

Why is the 2nd part so important to me?

Because I see too many people not having the opportunity to live their life to the fullest because they are geographically tied to their work.

I have an agent on my team with a child that is extremely affected by allergies due to where they live.

Everyday, this little girl runs into her parent’s bedroom, grabbing her mom’s phone to open an app to check the “Air Quality” for the day.

“Can I go outside today mommy?”

“Not today sweetheart"

It's heartbreaking...

The doctor has told them that if they want to lessen the burden on their child and bring them relief, they will have to move.

But, it’s not as easy as it seems.

One parent has a real estate business that has been built mainly on referrals.

Moving to a new town to start over will be extremely challenging.

The other, has to wait for job openings in the areas the doctor suggested they move.

The challenge here is that they can’t take just any job.

The locations the doctor has suggested are more expensive than where they currently live, so they need the “perfectt” opportunity to present itself.

They need to be able to support their family financially in order to make such a move.

I hate seeing them be tied down when they desperately need to move.

I want to see them move.

I want to help them move.

I want their answer to be “Same thing I’m doing now”, when asked what they are going to do for work when they get there.

I don’t want them to have to worry about what jobs are available in whatever town or city they choose to live in.

Really, I don’t want anyone to have worry about that.

As I push toward this goal, I am bringing this family with me.

I’m bringing my family, my friends and whoever else wants to join, with me.

I want to bring as many people as I can along with me.

I want to bring people who believe it can be done, people who believe in me.

People who no longer want to be forced to live somewhere they don’t want to because of their job.

That is why, it’s time to…

“Cut the Cord"

Are you a sell-out?

Sometimes when we aren't getting the results we want, as fast as we want, we sometimes think of compromising our ethics, morals, or beliefs to expedite our success.

You'll have to ask yourself if you ok to trade that you believe in for quicker success.

I have been there before, and to be honest, I have been feeling that way a bit lately.

I am building something incredible, the problem is, it isn't being built as fast as I'd like it to be.

When I see that it isn't moving fast enough I start to question if I am good enough.

"Do I have enough to offer?"

"Do I deserve to have success in this way?"

It is during these times when you are really challenged.

You see others having success, but they are doing it in a way that doesn't align with your values. That doesn't make it wrong. It just makes it, "not you".

So you ask yourself, "Am I willing to trade what I believe in, for a quicker path to success?"

Maybe the answer is "yes", but for me, it is a "Hard NO"

Today I sit down with Author, Coach, Real Estate Agent, and Master of Multiple Revenue Services, Wayne Sutton.

He gives us some great insight on mindset and how duplication is everything when it comes to growing a business.

He also tells us about how vital his newest book, "Side Hustle" has been to his recent success.

What an incredible interview this was, with some incredible nuggets.

But the one that stands out most is... clarity.

We must become crystal clear on what your business's message is.

As he says in the interview, "If you can't explain it to your 7-year old son, you need to change it. Don't complicate it".

Hearing the word "publish" can be kind of intimidating.

When we think of it, it seems like this long drawn out process, but but publishing has never been easier.

It can be an article, video, podcast, post on a social media site, etc.

It is basically just getting your thoughts out there for someone to consume and get to know you.

I have 3 appointments today because I have focused on publishing, getting people to know who I am.

So start publishing and let people know who you are. You will gain credibility with them before they even meet you.

For the 2nd time this week, I'm getting poor productivity.

I'm not depressed, down, or angry... just kind of blah.

It is ok though, I will get through this, we all will.

Just a wave for now, and on the other side awaits a wave in a positive direction.

None of us are perfect and we don't have always have perfect days.

Understanding this is both humbling and helpful.

Although this week has been a struggle, all it takes to get restarted is a little motivation.

I didn't have the greatest day today and questioned what I am even doing. It reminded me of this story:

Just over 3 weeks ago I made a commitment to my family and myself.

After slowly “letting myself go”, AGAIN.

It was decided that I would commit for the next 7 weeks to a Crossfit challenge that would test my physical and mental limits and discipline.

During this challenge I head to the Kaizen Crossfit gym, or in Crossfit terms, the “box” 3 days a week to train in a small coach led class.

The workout of the day or WOD is released daily so I am never aware of what I’m walking into until I show up, I like it that way.

By not knowing what it is before hand it doesn’t allow me to dread a certain exercise or workout, better yet it doesn’t give me a reason to ditch a class.

Today this commitment was seriously put to the test. The temptation was real not to honor it.

After playing basketball yesterday for the first time in over a year, I woke up feeling sore, with my shoulders carrying most of the soreness.

Although I have been training for a Ragnar | Zion-UT and already in week 4 of this challenge, playing basketball for a couple hours came with it’s own soreness. Soreness I wasn’t prepared for.

That is when the excuses and justifications started.

“It’s ok, you’re sore”, “you should take today off and rest”, “you don’t want to hurt yourself”.

Excuse, after excuse, after excuse.

After playing the rest of the week out in my head, it was clear that if I didn’t go today then my schedule wouldn’t allow all 3 workouts. I can’t miss today, I need to make it happen.

“Suck it up DeVere”

Finally, after wasting so much time convincing myself I didn’t need to go, the noon class was the only option.

Wishful thinking had me hoping that we wouldn’t have a shoulder centric workout.

But hey it’s Crossfit that’s probably exactly what we’ll be doing.

Upon arrival, we as a team are sent on a mile run to warm up, when we return the workout is revealed.

AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible)

In 15 minutes (15)

400m Run

20 step-ups

15 thrusters (yep shoulders)

10 pull-ups (yep again, shoulders)

GO!

I get through the 400m run, knock out the step-ups, then come the thrusters, which are basically a front squat with a barbell combined with an overhead press. 1, 2, 3 sort of, I maybe get 2.5 before I drop the bar.

“It’s too heavy”, I tell coach Becca.

She steps over to help me remove some weight from the barbell, like a Nascar pit crew changing a tire so that I can resume quickly.

Reps 4-15 get knocked out as well. Now on to pull-ups, 1, 2, 3, each one getting harder than the previous one.

Stopping to catch my breath I think “just 5 more”.

But I can only do 3 at time, followed by a set of 2 and eventually I can only complete 1 pull-up in a row.

Time!

Looking down at the sweat-dripped floor, arms shaking, gasping for what felt like my last breath I realized that I was only able to complete 2 rounds in the entire 15 minutes.

Was it my best workout ever? Probably not, but it was still a workout.

Sometimes a bad workout is better than NO workout.

Sometimes the reason our message can be misconstrued is because, we don't share the same knowledge as the person we are speaking too.

When we can understand the Bank Of Prior Knowledge (BOPK) of the person we are delivering our message to we have an increasingly better ability to get our message across.

If you start at a point that they do not have any experience or knowledge in, how can you expect them to follow along and understand as you progress further.

So start by simplifying your message and understand the BOPK of your audience.

When my computer froze today during a podcast class, I had to do some damage control.

I was bound by the chains of the internet speed. It was too slow for me.

After it finally caught up, life went on as normal. Sometimes...

The more we do a certain thing the more comfortable we become.

The challenge is, the more comfortable we become. the more likely we are to overlook something and make an error.

Kind of seems strange doesn't it? The more you do something and the more comfortable you get, the more likely you are to make a mistake?

That is because we no longer take all of the precautions necessary.

This happened to me last week. During a very important and serious interview, I overlooked one of the essential parts of recording my podcast.

The result, the quality of the podcast suffered and I felt that I let the listeners and the guest down. Because, although his message got out and it was clear, the quality of my recording wasn't there.

All because I was comfortable in what I was doing.

Today's episode is part 2 of the interview that I had with Scott Mendell about depression and suicide. The first episode he got a little deep little dark where he was talking about how he suffered from depression and also how thoughts of suicide went through his head.

In this episode we're going to go a little bit more onto the ideas that he has and the, the tips and tricks that he's used to battle depression and overcome and dig himself out of those dark places as well as talking about how people should feel that aren't directly affected by depression but how they can help and how if maybe your friend is depressed, how can you help them or if they're suicidal, how can you help them?

Also, how you should feel as a person that maybe has lost someone to suicide and how you can cope with that as well. So hopefully this gets out to anybody who it can help if, if it's not you that needs to hear this, but you know, someone that needs to hear it, please pass it along. That is what this podcast is about. Learning for 2. We're wanting to learn things so we can pass along to others. And as we come upon some trying times here, pretty soon, and battle through people with job loss, things like that, people are gonna start turning to dark places. So, if this can help at least one person get out of that dark place or keep them from going to that dark place, then we feel that we've, we've accomplished what we set out to do. So if this isn't for you and it might be for somebody else, please share it with them and hopefully we can make it a little bit brighter for everybody. So here's Scott Mendell for part two of this interview.

“Depression”

It can be a dark, lonely place that isolates you from everything you have ever cared about, rendering you unrecognizable.

Making it feel like there is no way out, no end in sight.

It can leave you paralyzed on your couch, staring up at the rafters above, looking for the “strong points”.

The ones strong enough to support your rapidly falling body, without crashing in.

Because the last thing you want is to fail, and have the ceiling fall in.

Crushing you but not finishing the job, forcing you to live with the failure..

You can feel each fiber of the rope slide through your hands as you look up to contemplate where you will fasten it.

Then you hear a knock at the door…

“Hi Scott, will you come watch my game? We need some help learning how to play”.

Then you think to yourself…

“I guess it couldn’t kill me”

And just like that, you have another chance at life.

_______

During this time we felt it was important to share Scott’s story with as many as we could.

So I’m releasing a 2-part interview episode about his battle with depression and what he has done to battle it.

This is part 1 of his story.

This is an interesting thought I had while listening to Ryan Holiday's interview with Steven Pressfied, on The Daily Stoic podcast.

He was asked, "How can someone plan for adversity without being nervous or anxious".

His response really made me think about how affirmations and preparedness can be contradictory.

On one hand, you want to think nothing but positive thoughts.

On the other hand, you are setting up for failure without having a plan in place when adversity hits.

I was dizzy, I had trouble concentrating and finding the words I was trying to say.

While I kept thinking, "what could this be and how can I fix it?" I overlooked the first step.

Instead of realizing it was just sinus pressure and a simple over the counter medication would likely do the trick, I focused on what else it could be or could it be fixed with something else.

I was reminded in the business world about getting back to basics as well.

I am guilty of always wanting to make things better, many times to my detriment.

I was speaking with owner and creator of a real estate platform that I've been networking on and was reminded that this business... and every business is about relationships.

Maybe it is because we associate cost and risk with value.

If we are paying for something, we don't have the risk of losing anything.

Therefore the value is gone.

This thought came up when I was thinking about the classes and courses I offer for FREE.

Maybe I need to start charging for people to see the value in it.

“Unbreakable"

The last 4+ months have been the hardest as a parent that I have ever experienced.

I have questioned my ability to be a quality father.

I have questioned my ability to have control of "the situation".

I have questioned my ability to be there for my son in the way he needed it.

I have questioned... if I was even what he needed.

Since October 29th Eva and I have had an extremely tough time getting our 7-year old son Camden, to school.

In total, he has only been to 3 full days since that time.

He has been experiencing some major anxiety when we get to the gates of the school.

To the point where his body language physically changes and you can see he is experiencing pain.

We have been taking him almost every day, sometimes sitting in the office until 2:30 and he still won’t go to class.

At first, for Eva and I, it was mainly frustration.

“What is the problem?”

“You are making me late for work”

“Just go in like all of the other kids”

We tried a number of things to get him to go in.

Incentives, rewards, therapists, consequences, threats... you name it we tried it.

Yesterday, I got a call from the school nurse explaining that it might be a good idea to get him to be homeschooled for the rest of the year.

After the months of frustration we strongly considered it, we spoke with the therapist last night and she said, “let’s give it another 2 weeks”.

So today’s goal was to get him into the classroom for 15 minutes.

I know that doesn’t sound like much, but when you look into his eyes and see the pain, fear, and disappointment in them, you’d probably change your mind.

To him, this is a REAL fear.

It is the equivalent to me being told I have to go skydiving, it is just happening at a lower scale for him.

So to see him get to school and KNOW he has to face something that he is afraid of doing is an accomplishment in itself.

When we walked in today, we sat down and the counselor walked in and said, “Camden, it's time to go”.

He got up and walked with her to class.

17 minutes later, he came back with papers, Valentine’s cards, and a huge smile on his face and said, “I did it” and gave me a fist bump.

As soon as we stepped outside he yelled, “YEAH!, I’m Unbreakable!”

When we got in the car he asked to listen to the song “Unbreakable" by Anti-Flag: http://bit.ly/UnBreakable-AF

So we put it on and turned it up to 11.

He wanted to listen to this song because this is how he felt in that moment.

Unbreakable.

For obvious reasons, this is now currently my favorite song.

I have never been so proud of him.

It has nothing to do with him going to school for 15 minutes.

It has everything to do with him facing his fears, accepting a challenge, and coming out on top.

It has everything to do with him feeling that he is unbreakable.

I am proud of him for not giving up and trying each day.

I am proud of him for teaching me a new lesson over these last few months.

I am proud of him because he is my son.

But most importantly, I’m proud of him because he is…

“Unbreakable"

The opening Lyrics to “Unbreakable”

When I get knocked down I get back up again, yeah Backed by my family and my friends, yeah A vicious culture leaves us lost in life Fueled on anger, fueled on spite Watch the phoenix rising up This ain't no fucking joke

Unbreakable Unbreakable today Unbreakable In every single way

*If your worry is that my 7-year old heard the F-word, you’ve missed the message.

I've never wanted an award from my brokerage, just an opportunity to contribute.

Today that opportunity came.

I was able to share with 70+ real estate agents on how I have been able to partner with 116 agents and counting, to build an International Real Estate team.

I am very grateful for the agents that took their time today to listen to what I had to say.

And I am especially grateful to those who have already joined me, and those who are about to join me on this journey.

Today I learned that Huey Lewis is losing his hearing.

That is a pretty significant thing to lose when you are a musician.

What if you lost a major tool in your business?

Would you be able to survive?

This is exactly why I don't ever learn a skill that is specific to real estate.

I learn skills that transcend industries.

This will allow me to continue to have the versatility to move with the market.

Whichever way it may turn.

Growing up, my friend Tanner's dad Jim (Swannie) would always tell us stories about his baseball career.

He would tell us that he was the only left-handed catcher in pro baseball.

Recently my dad brought me a book that was written about him, confirming that.

What is incredible is that Swannie didn't let anyone else's ideas or beliefs stop him from pursuing his dreams.

"There aren't any left-handed catchers in baseball"

"Not Yet", thought Swannie.

This determination landed him on a team called the Portland Mavericks coached by actor Kurt Russell's dad, Bing.

It was Swannie's determination and persistence that led him to his success.

It is a great reminder to us all.

I never thought I'd be in the position I am now and I am absolutely grateful for the opportunity that I have been given.

In this episode, I had to let out my best Ric Flair impression and yell, "whoooo".

I haven't had this much fun in real estate since I first started.

I have been able to change the lives for quite a few clients and their families.

But the impact I'm able to have on agents and families now, blows that number out of the water.

I love listening to this episode myself because I can hear the genuine excitement in my voice.

This is just the beginning of the impact that our team will have.

Over the next 5 years, I don't doubt that it will be in the 1,000's or even 10's of 1,000's.

Keep joining me for the ride, and if you want to jump on this crazy train, be sure to reach out to me.

Yesterday I hosted a podcast class.

I really have 3 goals and 1 result in mind when I host these classes.

3 Goals:

1) To get you to realize that someone needs to hear your story

2) To demystify the level of difficulty of it.

3) To teach you how to do it for little to no cost

1 Result:

To share your story with others, because someone needs to hear it.

That goal was accomplished after yesterday's podcast class.

One of the attendees, Dan, text me an hour and a half after the class telling me he would have an episode up that night.

Honestly, I was a little hesitant to believe he'd actually do it.

But, sure enough, he did.

By 7 o'clock he had his episode published.

And the best part...

He shared his story of battling type-1 Diabetes so that he could help others.

A big shout out to you Dan for your contribution to others.

Lately, I have been experimenting with the cold shower challenge.

It is a program to essentially get you to slowly learn how to take cold showers in order to control your breathing.

I am on week 2 of the 4 week challenge.

Each week adds :15 seconds to your previous week.

So I am now ending my regular morning shower with :30 seconds of the coldest water setting available.

I have been having my son use my phone as a timer, so I know when I am finished.

Well... yesterday he decided to pull a prank on me.

He paused the timer and didn't tell me.

As I waited for him to tell me that I was done, I had actually stayed under longer than I had ever done before.

It was a great reminder from my 7-year old son, that I was only limited by my own thoughts.

When I told myself I could only do 30 seconds, that's all my mind would allow me to do.

But by taking that limitation out of the way...

I stayed in the cold shower long enough to beat my previous record.

What does it feel like when you meet those you look up to?

Hopefully it is a great experience for you, occasionally it doesn't go quite as planned.

But, sometimes...

Sometimes, it can be more than you could have ever imagined.

That happened to me this past week in Puerto Vallarta.

I had partnered with Author, Speaker, and Coach, Dean Philpott.

He brought amazing energy and lit a fire under me to be more for others.

I can't wait for the opportunity to collaborate more with him.

Plus, he even signed my book!

I've never been so sure that I am in the right group of people I need to be with.

Today was the opening session of our retreat/mastermind here in Puerto Vallarta and the common theme amongst speakers was, changing lives.

Yes, there was talk of growing your business and making money.

You know, the basic necessities of sustaining your business.

But every speaker talked about how they have been able to change lives.

This ability to change lives is the reason I know I'm surrounded by the right people.

Many times we protect our clients from having to worry about the things we deal with behind the scenes.

When we let those things out, that is when the anxiety can creep in.

Causing all kinds of problems and nervousness that maybe didn't need to be caused.

Today on our flight to LA, en route to Puerto Vallarta, we hit some significant turbulence and the flight attendant, visibly and audibly nervous said, "stay in your seats and flight attendants return your seats".

His reaction was scarier than the actual drop in elevation.

It reminded me of how we can get our clients worked up if we don't keep our game face on.

"If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want To Go Far, Go Together"

2 years ago I never thought it could be possible.

Sure, I thought of starting my own Real Estate brokerage and managing a team of agents.

But this many… no way, not a chance!

The main reason for thinking this was that I thought it was too much work for one person to manage.

You know when you are on a job interview and they ask you to list your strengths and weaknesses?

Well, this particular characteristic would definitely fall into the weakness category for me.

I am 100% guilty of wanting to do things on my own.

I want to learn anything, and try to do everything.

Let me tell you, this is in no way a strength.

And it has hindered my growth as a professional significantly.

As I mentioned, I had thought about becoming a broker and growing my own team, thinking that this was the only way to accomplish my goals.

But the more I looked into it, the more I realized that the amount of liability, risk, and financial investment wasn’t worth it to me.

So that dream eventually dried up.

But, I still had this thirst to want to help other agents build their businesses and maximize their careers.

And almost on cue, I was was approached by Matt Ashby who shared with me an incredible opportunity, one that I had never heard of and one that honestly sounded too good to be true.

Under normal circumstances I would have just dismissed this idea and passed on his proposal.

But something told me to remain open to the idea and dig a little deeper. There was something about this model that just felt different… it felt right.

After some careful reflection and consideration, along with a willingness to follow my gut.

I made the decision to “burn the boats” and embark on a journey that required me to bet on myself...

Or so I thought.

I had chosen to leave a 100% brokerage, offering to give up 20% of my commissions.

This may sound counterintuitive, but the idea was to focus on the “long game”. Sacrifice the 20% to make more later.

Which I did already, over 100% actually.

At this point the plan was simple.

Today's episode is based on one of my best friend and mentors posts today.

An incredible perspective on how we think..

Nick McLean's Post:I've discovered why we suck at taking action...

...We can't see it!

Did you know South Korean babies and children are taught names of actions versus American kids who are taught names of objects and people.

Check it out. An American baby would be asked to identify a dog and be asked what is this?

A Korean baby would be asked about the dog. What is the dog doing?

We become extremely good at identifying people, places, and things and putting them in categories.

The downside is we are terrible at identifying actions.

This inability to see actions creates a culture and parents that are constantly asking us 'Why'.

When we do something we are always asked, Why did we do or say something?

When condemnation puts people on the defensive when asked 'Why'.

We adapt to the question 'Why' by developing skills to withhold the truth and give an answer that justifies our actions.

Since we are bad at seeing actions we point to objects and people for the reasons why something did or did not happen.

When you see someone doing well, stop asking what things, objects they have that created their life and start asking what actions do they consistently take to achieve.

"If You Want t To Change Your Life, You Need To Change Your Environment”

A couple of weeks ago I went to a Grant Cardone 10x seminar.

If you aren’t familiar with him, he is the author of the "10x Rule", speaker, real estate investor, and sales trainer.

He can be a little intense and I understand that people can be turned off by his arrogance and choice language.

None of that bothers me.

After all, he’s had a ton of success and I was there to learn from him, not judge his delivery.

But one thing he said really resonated with me.

He said…

“If You Want To Change Your Life, You Need To Change Your Environment”

This was something that had be both excited and nervous at the same time.

I was exited about what I could become, what I could accomplish, and the places I could go.

But I was nervous about what and who I might have to give up to get it.

This sacrifice is a real fear that exists, not only in me but in many others as well.

We are at the time of year where many people have already forgotten that they made a vow to change their life just less than a month ago.

Mainly due to the fact that they wanted to change their life but never made an attempt to change their environment.

Changing your environment can be a simple tweak or a major change depending on what it is you hope to accomplish.

For example, when I’m trying to lose weight or eat healthier, I don’t buy any cookies, ice cream, or other types of food that would derail my success.

If it’s in the pantry I’m eating it, if I have to drive to the store for it, eh, I guess I don’t need it that bad.

That is a simple change of environment that can lead to a life change.

Some more significant life changes need more significant environmental changes.

Something like moving to a new house, or state, or even country. Switching jobs, relationship changes. Things like that.

3 friends of mine, who happen to be amazing real estate agents as well, decided it was time for them to change their lives.

When they took the chance to join me on a new, unproven journey, they changed their environment.

They changed their environment from what was comfortable and what was easy, to something that was unknown and could prove to be more difficult.

Why would they do that?

Because they wanted to be the best versions of themselves and the environment they were previously in couldn’t support the growth they desired.

Care to know what happened?

In less than 12 months Jeff & Lynn hit the coveted Icon status in our company, climbing into the top 500 real estate agents in the state of Utah out of 9,000 agents.

And Mindy was just announced as the Branch Manager in the Spokane region.

I couldn’t be happier for all of them, this is only the beginning of their accomplishments and I can’t wait to see how far they continue to grow.

Congratulations on your accomplishments Jeff, Lynn, and Mindy!

They are just a tiny portion of the success stories I have seen over the last 2 years.

They are a perfect reminder that…

"If You Want t To Change Your Life, You Need To Change Your Environment”

I am very excited to announce that I have added an interview series to my Learn For 2 podcast.

Originally, the idea was to share my own journey while sharing with others what I learned in the process.

But after 138 solo episodes I decided that I needed to help share the journeys of others, especially those who have impacted directly.

Like my good friend Clifford Duvernois, the host of the "Path To 1 Million” Podcast/Vlog.

When I decided to add interviews to my podcast, I knew Cliff had to be my first interview.

He has inspired me to keep up with my daily(M-F) podcast and has encouraged me along the way.

His willingness to share with others, not only the ups, but the downs as well.

He is true, authentic, and vulnerable.

Allowing the world to see who he is.

He has no doubt that his mission is to impact 1 million people through his stories.

And I have no doubt that he will.

Honestly, I think it will be many more.

I am very honored that Cliff agreed to do the very 1st interview for the Learn For 2 podcast.

So please enjoy the video or find the link to the podcast here:

Today I found myself in the meeting room of a title company scheduling out the next few months of podcast classes.

After that, I scheduled a meeting for tomorrow to discuss another class with an organizer that I have never met. I just decided to reach out to her and she wants to discuss it further.

As I sit her thinking about what this podcast class has turned into in such a short time, I kind of have to laugh at how it got started.

I was encouraged to start coming from a place of contribution, and this was one way I could contribute.

So I sent an email and reached out to a title rep at the company I do quite a bit of business at.

I told her I'd like to host a class on how to create a podcast.

Long story short. . .

We hashed out the details and I taught a class.

Then other people caught wind of it and started asking me to host classes for them.

Now, here I am looking into month 1 of 2020 with a goal to host 26 classes this year, averaging 1 every 2 weeks.

All because I decided to just get started.

My good friend Chad once told me that there is, "A new devil at every level".

I had never heard this before but it made complete sense.

Often we say to ourselves, "if I can just get to here, I' ll be done".

The reality is that when we get there, a whole new set of problems that we didn't know we'd have show up.

This just happened to me, I decided to add interviews to the podcast. Something I didn't do before.

On to a new level.

Well, at this level I lost the recording of the interview.

Something I didn't have to worry about before.

But here he is, a new devil at my new level.

It's easy for us to try and sell or convince someone that they need what we have.

But where we usually miss the mark is when we don't listen to their needs or take them into consideration while we try to pitch them on what they think they need or want.

I had 2 conversations today that hit each end of the spectrum.

1 was me trying to get an answer from an home appraiser that wasn't listening to me at all.

The other, was me talking to an associate at Home Depot that listened intently to what I needed and made an appropriate suggestion based on what I told him.

This experience was a great reminder of what it means to understand the needs of others, so that you can either offer them a relevant solution or direct them in a different direction in order to solve their problem.

Sometimes it's more than just about being paid for everything you do.

Today I had 2 podcast classes that I taught and the gratitude and the engagement expressed by the attendees was amazing.

It is times like these that remind me that coming from a place of contribution is never wrong.

This podcast was built on coming from a place of contribution and the podcast class is exactly the same.

Even though I didn't not get paid monetarily, I definitely was paid with gratitude, and it is well worth it for me.

"You Can Never Say The Wrong Thing To The Right Person or The Right Thing To The Wrong Person”

This was said to me just over a year ago and it couldn’t be any more true today.

Over the last year, I have tried to share an opportunity with those close to me, those I really want to succeed.

These people mean a lot to me and I want to do whatever I can to propel them on their journey.

But what I have learned to be a harsh reality is that, regardless of what I can see that I feel will be beneficial to them, they simply do not see, or choose not to see.

I’m not sure if it is just their ego shutting their minds off to a “different” way of doing things or their fear taking a chance.

Either way, nothing can be said to them to change their mind.

The same goes for those who I share the ideas with that are “all in”.

I could talk ad nauseam about this topic and whatever I say, wrong or right, they are all in.

The point is, if someone has already shut their mind off to something new, it is very difficult to open it up to a new idea. Regardless of how you present it.

On the flip side, if someone is open to new ideas, especially progressive ones, it will be hard to turn them off.

Regardless of how crazy they may seem.

So in essence, if people are naturally open to new ideas, they will be receptive, but if they want things to be done as they’ve always been done before they will automatically hate the idea.

Hence, why…

"You Can Never Say The Wrong Thing To The Right Person or The Right Thing To The Wrong Person”

I had something else planned today.

But after talking to a good friend of mine about 30 minutes before I recorded this espisode, I decided to change course.

As difficult as it is for us to see while we are in it, others are going through challenges of their own.

We have been struggling with my son and school and it has been draining on us.

However, it could be worse.

After this phone call, my problems were put into perspective.

Everyone has challenges, we are not unique in this aspect.

But during these moments, we have the opportunity to make them teachable.

By just finding a lesson lying within these challenges, we have the opportunity to change the course and outcome.

This past Saturday I went to a free seminar put on by Grant and Elena Cardone.

He is the 10x guy.

How to 10x your life.

Luckily for me, I was able to learn a ton during the 3 hours and even met someone local that was on the same page as me.

I realized that is what I need in my life, to surround myself with more like-minded individuals.

Ones that are looking to become more, just as I am.

They understand what it is that I am trying to do.

They are the ones that will support, encourage, and join me on my journey.

Also, there is a reminder to learn from those you loathe.

When people don't understand something or are having difficulty learning or grasping a concept, we often jump to the conclusion that they may have a learning disability.

But what if that wasn't the case?

What if they were fully capable of learning, but not the way we are trying to teach or lead them?

What if it's not a learning disability... but a teaching disability?

I've told in my adult life that I must have been a good student.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

I did enough to get by because my only interest was staying eligible to play sports, which was barely enough to graduate.

The truth was, I was a terrible student, learning didn't interest me.

But now, I love to learn at every opportunity that I can.

Because I wasn't a good student in high school, does that mean I had a learning disability?

And since I love to learn now, does that mean I outgrew it?

Or...

Does it mean that the way I was being taught wasn't registering with me personally, and now that I have the opportunity to seek out the ways in which I learn more efficiently, that I enjoy it more?

I don't know...

What I do know, is that people learn and want to be lead in different ways. These people can be labeled with "learning disabilities".

So next time you are trying to teach or lead someone and they aren't "getting it", it doesn't mean they are dumb or lazy.

Maybe it means that you have the inability to reach them, causing a teaching disability.

Unfortunately, the success rate of real estate agents is drastically low.

A couple of reasons are, the low barrier of entry to get into the industry, as well as the expectations of what to expect once you are in, are rarely what you were promised.

But one glaring issue is the fact that most agents continue to play the "short game" over and over, with no long term plan.

For example, an agent that left our brokerage because the 20% split was too much to spend, just offered his clients a portion of their commission when buying with them, as well as offering to sell their home for free if they purchased their next home with that agent.

Interesting I thought...

This is a short game play, a play to try and increase transactions by giving away their commissions.

The exact reason why they wanted to move brokerages.

It isn't necessarily the agent's fault though.

This industry preaches the short game mentality, that is why most agents just end up becoming employees in their real estate practice.

They don't play the "long game" and treat it like an actual career or business.

Sometimes I need to just stop and live in the moment.

With so much technology available to us, we sometime get into massive overwhelm.

For instance, as I build my international real estate team I am constantly looking for ways to share this incredible mission.

My mind actually never stops thinking about it.

The challenge with that is I feel like I have a million puzzle pieces, with no corner or border pieces.

I just don't know where to start.

But something that helps center me, is taking on projects that require me to use my hands and allow me to focus on just that step.

This allows ideas and thoughts to flow in and out of my mind without the pressures of needing an idea.

I just learned today that Henry Ford actually built a village called Greenfield for this is exact purpose.

He thought we were getting too involved in our home telephones and cars. Causing us to detach from the fundamentals.

“Becoming is Better Than Being”

Throughout my adult life I have been through many changes. Some big, some small.

The one thing that has remained constant is that I don’t have it all figured out.

Not even close.

I tried college out a few times because that’s what I thought I was supposed to do, but it wasn’t really for me.

I used to joke that if I only took classes that I was interested in, I would never graduate.

I’d be the real-life Van Wilder… Still in school with no degree on the horizon.

Needless to say, I never made it all the way through.

I’ve always had this chip on my shoulder when I’m told I need to do something a certain way.

I’m not very receptive.

The more you tell me it has to be done “this” way, the more I resist and search for other ways to do it.

When I was in the hospitality world as a food server and concierge the next natural move was to get into management and continue working my way up “the ladder”, but I looked into the future and that wasn’t for me either.

Same with real estate, “If you want to be successful you need to make cold calls, knock on doors and beg your sphere”, again… not me.

I hate when people knock on my door, call me out of the blue or try to sell me something at a friend’s barbeque.

So why would I do it to someone else?

Do unto others right?

So, in my quest to NOT do those things I stumbled upon the power of storytelling, and how stories can change lives.

Now, that’s me!

This has had such an impact on me, that above my computer is a sign that says…

“My Primary Profession IS A Storyteller”

That is how much I believe in it.

Although there is still plenty of improvement for me on this journey as I learn to become a better storyteller, I welcome the process, I even look forward to it actually.

After all, it is my primary profession.

I would love to say that I have already become a great storyteller but that wouldn’t be accurate and honestly I don’t know that I would want to be able to say that.

There is too much value in “becoming”.

As my good friend Ryan Sloper says,

“Becoming is Better Than Being”

Sometimes we need to look past the dressing of comments and focus on the message itself.

Marshawn Lynch just gave a message to young NFL players, his audience, and spoke to them in his terms.

Others who read, heard, or watched his comments were too caught up in his word choice to understand what he was really telling them.

Two things stuck out to me about this:

1) He knows his audience and he was speaking to them.

2) Don't let the delivery block you from learning the lesson.

Furthermore, you wouldn't want the best racquet until you learned how to use a beginner racquet anyway.

Here's an idea...

Just Do It!

Just like Nike says.

Start doing it and perfect your craft.

A trigger word among entrepreneurs is, "Hustle".

But I question, is it enough?

And more importantly, is it sustainable?

Don't get me wrong, I respect the hell out of hustle, but the challenge is that it is directly tied to energy.

What if you are having  a bad day, are sick, or are on vacation?

How can you guarantee that you can bring the same consistent hustle, day in and day out?

More importantly, when you are young, hustle is just second nature, but when you get older things change and so does your energy.

This is what has me asking...

Is HUSTLE enough.

I started The Learn For 2 Podcast for 3 main reasons:

1) To document my journey of building an international real estate team.

2) To learn with the intent to teach to others.

3) To find my voice for those who need to hear it.

I received this message over the weekend after a listener heard last Friday’s episode that resonated with them.

"Bro, you are such a good speaker. Just off that little podcast you motivated me"

It came as validation and motivation to continue with this micro-commitment that I have made.

This was the episode he was referring to: https://overcast.fm/+TL4P--vJ4

When I'm asked what kind of music I like, I typically say, "Everything".

But that isn't really true...

Although I listen to genres like punk rock, 80's, Blues, classical etc.

I don't like ALL music.

For instance, if you asked me if I liked country music, I'd tell you, "No".

The reality though, is that I do like some country songs, just not as a whole genre.

Mainly because I don't like most country songs.

But we should be careful throwing out blanket statements of things we don't like... that could prevent us from learning.

This was brought to my attention today when I was asked if I like "Scream-O" music, basically death metal with a background singer that just screams.

I said "no".

But when the song started to play, the lyrics caught me off guard and really spoke to where I am at in life and where I want to go.

Crazy right?

Had I said, "no, I don't like this music and I don't want to listen to it", I would have never learned this valuable lesson today.

Don't prevent yourself from learning because of your biases, you never know where you might come across...

An Unexpected Find.

“With a knife”

Sometimes I forget how literal children’s minds work.

I was reminded of this today with my son who is 5.

When his sister was about the same age nearly 6 years ago, I was just getting into authors and speakers such as Tony Robbins and Hal Elrod.

You know, the motivational guys.

I was really just starting to learn and study topics like self-reflection and self-improvement. Starting to think deeper about things.

Then one day I was driving her to school, at the time it was about a 30-minute drive.

During the drive, I decided to put this new knowledge to work.

My thought process was, “I’m 30 years old and I’m just starting to learn this, what if I had been thinking this way since i was 5?”.

So I thought I’d ask her a “deep” question…

“Sweetie”

“Yes, Daddy?”

“How do you see yourself?”

During her short pause, I could hardly handle myself.

“What would she say?” I thought.

Does she think of her self as a winner? Is she confident? Does she feel loved?

What is it? Blurt it out already!

Her response…

“With a mirror”

Although I was a little disappointed because I thought it was going to be an epic conversation that we shared, I cracked a smile and said, “you got me, honey”

Fast forward to today, my son asks me to make him a sandwich.

I usually ask him if he would like it cut in rectangles, squares or triangles.

After I finished making it, I said…

“Buddy"

"Yes, Daddy?"

"How do you want me to cut your sandwich?”

His response…

“With a knife"

First off Happy New Year!

I have a plan, a goal, a mission, a vision.

But since it's my vision, I can't expect others to see it.

In order to get them to see it, they may have to go through a different door. A door they are more familiar with.

In this case, I am trying to help agents build their real estate business like an actual business, with multiple revenue streams.

The challenge is that most agents haven't been taught to think like this so it is like I am speaking a foreign language to them.

So now I have realized that I must adjust and present things in a way that they are thinking.

In 2019 I decided to take my foot off the gas of selling homes and focus mainly on building an international team.

But after realizing that others don't share the same vision, I decided that I need to sell more homes and close more transactions so I am speaking their language.

The good news... I got a listing under contract today. On day 1 of the newest mission.

Well, 2019 is a wrap and this is the final episode of the year.

It has been a lot of fun and I have learned a ton over the past few months.

I hope a few of you have learned a couple of things too.

With the new year coming up tomorrow, I wanted to announce that there will be some slight changes to the show.

I will be sprinkling a few interviews into the mix as the year goes on.

Although I have a great time trying to spread my knowledge to those who are seeking it, I feel that I owe it to you guys to tap into some of the knowledge and experience of some of the people that I am learning from.

I can't wait to hear the journeys that they will be sharing with us.

Have a safe and happy New Year's Eve tonight.

🥂🥂I'll see you in 2020!! 🥂🥂

It's pretty easy to put in hard work when you know who's watching you.

But when you put in the work regardless of who, if anyone, is watching, can lead to great opportunities.

Last night I was reminded of this.

Eva and I went to our friends 18th-anniversary dinner.

While talking with our Uber driver we learned that he got a huge break in his career as a makeup artist when the right person walked in the door and saw what he was capable of.

That person offered him a job on the spot and now he has an amazing opportunity to springboard his career.

Keep your head down and work to your full potential, regardless of who's watching.

Even if you don't think anyone is watching...

You never know who might be.

I think that we get overcoming fears mixed up with getting rid of fears.

I don't believe one can simply get rid of a fear.

I believe that, even if you get over a fear, it will always reside in you.

You just become a master of that fear.

It can always creep in on you, but you, with a few tools, have the ability to control the amount of power it holds over you.

Today I watched a video from a business partner of mine, Heather Hughes, "The Linkedin Lady Boss".

Listen here: https://www.facebook.com/heather.h.page.9/videos/10217807274985893/

She shared that one of her fears is what other people think.

This seems strange considering how vulnerable she lets herself be on social media.

But just because she shares so much with the world, does not mean she doesn't have a fear of how it will be received.

Like I said, mastering a fear doesn't make it disappear, it just means that you have been able to overcome it in a way that it seems like it is no longer there.

Here are 3 tips for mastering your fears:

1) Practice - Whatever is causing you fear, go directly at it.

2) Understanding Your Journey - Know that this is your journey and that things will change as you make your way through. You will have to adjust occasionally but stay the cource.

3) Laser Focus - Know what your goal is and aim with precision.

Have you ever seen or read The Secret?

It is about the law of attraction.

What you put into the universe, you will receive back.

After being told that I should watch a movie that is a little older, I started looking for it.

For various reasons, I didn't stream it and never ordered it online.

It is old enough that it isn't really available at a typical brick and mortar store anymore.

So today while driving by a thrift store, I thought to myself, "hmm... I wonder if they might have it."

The chances were slim.

It's not like thrift stores put out an order for 15-year-old movies. They get what shows up by chance.

And even if it was there, it's not like it would be easy to find.

Have you ever been to a thrift store?

They don't exactly have a filing system in place. You really have to look for things.

But guess what?

It was there and it practically jumped out at me.

So, for $2.99 I bought Cinderella Man.

What made me stop there today, I don't know.

Why was exactly what I was looking for there, and why did I find it?

Was it meant to be? Was it the Law of Attraction? Or, was it simply coincidence?

I don't know the answer to those questions either.

What I do know is that this isn't the first time I've thought of something and it happened.

Maybe it was just dumb luck, but I prefer to think it was...

The Secret.

“3 feet from gold”

In the book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill states:

“One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by ‘temporary defeat”.

I like how he emphasizes “temporary”.

Because it is the “temporary” that we give in to that becomes the “permanent”.

He then shares a story of a family that was ready to take advantage of a gold vein they found during the gold-rush.

After discovering there wasn’t as much gold as they originally thought, they decided to quit and sold their machinery to a man who would later discover that the family quit drilling just 3 feet from the “motherload”.

We are all given multiple chances per day to quit.

Whether it’s a diet, workout plan, relationship or even learning a new skill. The opportunity to quit is always there.

I know I face this daily and have really started to be aware of MY opportunities to quit.

When I decided to learn how to become a storyteller, basically starting from scratch, I made a commitment to do so.

This commitment has required more discipline than I would have ever expected.

I have made it a point to schedule my day around honoring this commitment, carving out time to write them.

And over the last couple of months, I’ve completed my stories within a minute of my deadline, while changing my subject multiple times and in one case while I was in line for a ride at Knott’s Berry Farm.

It doesn’t stop there though and today is a perfect example.

I woke up a little earlier this morning to get a jump start on today’s story and ended up with some company. My son decided to get up early too and… he’s kind of a talker.

So I put it off a bit, thinking I’d fit it in during the day. I was wrong.

Then…

I got the kids to school, headed out with clients (which ran later than expected), picked the kids up from school, stopped to help a guy with a dead car battery, came home and right back out to my son’s school for his open house.

These were all “temporary defeats” that I could have easily chosen to accept and quit and no one would have noticed.

But that would have meant I would have quit on my overall commitment, not just the one for today.

One thing that I know about myself is that when I stop, it’s hard to get going again.

And I don’t want to stop…

3 feet from gold.

Since I've started this podcast, the focus was never on the downloads.

Especially the downloads of any specific episode.

The idea was to create content, let people know who I am, let them know what my character is and decide for themselves if they like me, or even want to listen to what I have to say.

The goal with this content is to have someone land on one of my episodes at 3am one night and get caught in the spider-web that is my story, or in this case my journey.

Ryan Fletcher, a mentor I once had would talk about this spider web philosophy, that is where it started for me.

I brought that idea to my podcast and what was a typical day of 10-15 downloads a day went to 118 overnight.

In less than 24 hours I had 118 downloads from yesterday's episode to today's.

All it took was consistency.

“Celebrate Yourself”

As an entrepreneur, one of the things that trips me up often is not allowing myself to enjoy or celebrate an accomplishment.

Always thinking, “I could have done that better”, “it’s not a big deal, I am supposed to be able to do that” or “that was nice, but what’s next?”

I believe that If you continue to accomplish goals and downplay their significance, you will eventually run out of desire and ambition to accomplish future goals.

There is no doubt that staying hungry is a huge part of success, but so is allowing yourself a moment to reflect on your greatness.

In an interview I watched today:

https://youtu.be/na7RfQ5NBC8

Ed Mylett said…

“You are perfect how you exist right now… but that version of you isn’t sufficient next year”

To me, this is giving us permission to celebrate ourselves for all that we have accomplished, while knowing there is much more ahead.

I believe we get too caught up in not allowing ourselves to celebrate our own accomplishments that we never truly accept our individual greatness.

In Brian Moran’s book “The 12 Week Year”. He suggests breaking your year down into 12 weeks by setting short term goals for superior long term results.

He also suggests celebrating each 12 week year as you would a full year.

If you meet your goals in those 12 weeks, he recommends taking a vacation or buying yourself that watch you have been wanting.

This enables you to celebrate your achievements as you get ready for the next round of goals.

It is not an ending point but a checkpoint, to remind you that you have been making progress.

As Mylett said, although your present version of yourself is just right, it is not as good as the future version of yourself will be.

So don’t be afraid to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small.

Celebrate yourself knowing that you are perfect where you are right now.

But…

Next year’s version will be that much better!

When you aren't sure what you are supposed to do to get your 7-year old son back on track, you tend to get worried.

Understanding that everyone learns in different ways... including children.

I have been extremely frustrated over the past month or so, trying to fit my son into a box that he doesn't feel he belongs in.

Yesterday he showed me why he doesn't want to be confined to just one learning style.

I came home to him writing the lyrics of entire songs by using Alexa and Youtube to fill out his notebook paper.

He explained his process and I was blown away.

I know we carry a standard of how we learn in this society, but he just reminded me that everyone has a different learning style.

Now, I will do my best to make sure I support him as we make progress.

As I've said before, I love to be positive but sometimes you have those days.

And that's ok. That is why I share them with you.

Of course, I could put an act on for 10-15 minutes to let you believe that everything is awesome.

I don't want to do that to you, this podcast is about the journey and there can be bad days on the journey.

This episode is about understanding that there is negative energy and that energy can be felt.

But the good news is, that positive energy can be felt as well.

This is why I believe if we continue to search for positive energy, the more positive energy we will find.

A long-time friend of mine called me today and we started talking about Gary V and side hustles.

He told me that he started selling socks as his side hustle.

Not necessarily because he's always had a dream to get rich.

But because he started to enjoy these particular socks that have helped him regain his individualism outside of his corporate 9-5 job.

So he wanted to share them with others and has had some pretty good success starting out.

Will it be enough to take over his existing job or build a retirement?

Who knows.

What it will do is allow him to enjoy his hobby and make a little spending money.

After all, when we look back on life, we never say, "I wish I would have done less"

I know it may seem counter-intuitive but sometimes working for free can be the springboard that your business needs.

I get it, we all want to be compensated for any job that we perform.

But focusing on getting paid for everything you do will only have you focusing on the small picture.

By offering people value upfront, instead of asking them for something right after you meet them will give you the opportunity to build an actual relationship, leaving them fulfilled.

I am by no means implying that you shouldn't be compensated for your time and services, I am simply suggesting that you don't need to be scared or feel like less of a business person if you decide to offer something of value at no cost every once and awhile.

One reason I feel that success eludes many people is that they allow others to control how they feel, or react to something.

Recently there has been a commercial by Peleton, the stationary bike company, that has people upset.

Some people have decided to dissect and pull out hidden meanings to become upset by.

This commercial has zero effect on the people that choose to not let it.

Those that do will continue to be affected by many other things that have nothing to do with them but they will allow it to consume their mind and mental real estate. Restricting their opportunity for growth

It's episode 100!

This is a huge milestone for me and one that is worth me celebrating.

When I started this podcast I didn't know if I could make it to 100 episodes, and honestly, I didn't know how many episodes that I was trying to get to.

I just made a micro-commitment to record an episode every Monday-Friday in an attempt to find my voice and the result, so far, is 100 episodes.

Had I focused on the result of 100 episodes it would have felt like forever and maybe I would have quit much sooner.

But by just focusing on the next day, the micro-commitment, the results followed.

And I'll argue, perspective.

Over the dinner table yesterday as I described a challenge that our immediate family is going through, I spoke with another family member.

When he told me what his family was facing, my own challenges seemed small.

Just as I said that I truly believe that everyone gets opportunities, I believe the same about setbacks...

I believe everyone gets their fair share of setbacks as well.

It just depends on what perspective we decide to view it from.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My business partner Brian, posted on Facebook today:

"I DECLARE... that I’ll never ever forget that I have enough right now to be thankful for an eternity!!!"

This made me stop and think about gratitude, and how easy it is to forget what we are grateful for as we continue onto the next goal.

It's ok for us to celebrate ourselves and be proud of what we have accomplished. While also not being ashamed to want to achieve more.

"Don’t forget, M has an orthodontist appointment today” a text read.

“Yeah… I know” I responded, almost irritated.

“My god, does she think I can’t remember anything”, I say to myself.

But then I think about it for a minute, “How can I blame her?”

If it happens enough times it eventually becomes reality, right?

“You remembered pasta sauce right?”

uh...

“Did you switch the laundry over?”

Shit!

No wonder Eva has to check up on me like a child to make sure I remember our daughter’s orthodontist appointment.

After all, I set my alarm 7 days a week so I don’t forget the kids at school. I don’t want to leave that to chance.

It seems like my mind is constantly running and if I get in a groove, I tend to lose track of time. I don’t trust myself to look at the clock, so I need the reminder.

It’s not even that I forget what’s being said to me, it’s more like I’m not even fully processing it.

Eva will tell me something and naturally I respond, “uh-huh”.

Eyes glossed over, only absorbing half of what she said.

How frustrating that must be, how can she deal with it?

She does, I just don’t know how.

Hopefully it’s because she knows I mean well, but really…

It’s got to be SO frustrating.

It’s not that I don’t care what she says, it’s just I can’t stop the chatter in my brain as I think of “what’s the next project?”.

I’m not doing it because I’m uninterested in what she has to say or to be disrespectful, I simply just can’t help it.

She certainly isn’t the only recipient of this aspect of my personality but definitely is the one who has to handle the majority of it.

For this I am grateful.

For her I am grateful.

I know that it takes someone special to be able go through life with me and handle my many quirks, especially this one.

I mean, I can barely do it.

I’ll admit, I do forget a lot of things, like pasta sauce and laundry.

But what I'll remember is, that regardless of how frustrating it must be, Eva is still by my side every step of the way giving me “friendly” reminders.

That…

“I’ll Never Forget"

It's easier said than done.

Certain things, like breathing, we are born with the ability to do.

But most everything else we do in life is learned.

Managing reactions and emotions are no different.

Most of us know that we have the ability to choose how things affect us. We may not be in control of what is happening to us, but we absolutely have control of how we react to it.

That doesn't mean we are good at it.

That is another learned skill that we aren't born with.

It takes practice.

Yet, for some reason, we have an unrealistic expectation of how quickly we should be able to master this skill.

We know that many times we need to, "get over it".

But sometimes it's not that simple, it's not something that comes naturally to us.

It is a learned skill and we should allow ourselves time to learn how to master it.

Today when I logged into the MLS I was notified of the association offering their condolences to a number of agent's families that had passed away.

It reminded me that most people never retire from real estate.

They either just quit, die while still an agent, or have retired from something else and have become a real estate agent for fun, or as something to do.

After that, I listened to Colin Cowherd talk today about how you will never become wealthy by being conservative.

He was talking about football, but it made so much sense.

He said if you play it conservative by staying at the same job and maxing out your 401k you will have a comfortable life.

But that won't create wealth.

In order to create wealth, you need to take a shot.

Well... here I am, taking my shot.

Several years ago I read a book called, "The Goal".

The main premise was to increase business by eliminating bottlenecks.

Not letting items that shouldn't pass through... pass through.

If they don't pass inspection, they do not move on.

I think this is a great outlook.

How many times in your real estate business have you generated a lead that you've nurtured for months, only to find out they cannot purchase.

Why wouldn't we lead with getting them financed, maybe with the help of a lender or loan officer and start from there.

In our industry we do a lot of backtracking and dealing with bottlenecks.

What bottlenecks are you currently facing?

Have you ever heard of free soloing?

If not, this is what Wikipedia defines it as,

"Free solo climbing or free soloing, is a form of technical ice or rock climbing where the climbers (or free soloists) climb alone without ropes, harnesses or other protective equipment, forcing them to rely entirely on their own individual strength and skill."

Otherwise known as... crazy!

I recently watched a documentary called Free Solo, which follows free soloist Alex Honnold on his quest to climb El Capitan in Yosemite, over 3,000 feet of granite without safety ropes or harnesses.

Although the idea is insane to people like me, I couldn't stop watching.

His preparation was just as insane, planning and practicing every move down to the last one.

It's the short game vs. the long game.

Many of us real estate agents are constantly playing the short game of, getting leads, showing homes, selling homes, and getting paid.

We don't have any plans to get off of this treadmill because we are focusing on URGENT tasks, not IMPORTANT ones.

Think of it this way, we are focused on what we can do today that gets us paid once tomorrow, rather than what can we do today that pays us multiple times in several years.

We are just trying to make money, not build a business.

This is in turn killing our business.

In entrepreneurship, ALL aspects of life tend to bleed into one and other.

At times it can be difficult to compartmentalize or draw clear lines for where is personal life starts and when your business stops.

When that happens it can be tough to be both the motivator and the motivated.

When you are your own boss and responsible for deciding what tasks need to be done and also making sure they get done, sometimes you lack the motivation to do either.

This has happened to me over the last 3 weeks.

I have struggled with my son wanted to go to school and it has been demanding, not only of my time, but it has consumed my mind as well.

These are the things we must face and overcome as entrepreneurs.

Has it been tough? Of course.

Has it been stressful? Absolutley!

Will we get through it? No doubt about it.

All you entrepreneurs out there... I am rooting for you!

Weather the storm and change the world with your vision

Today I share 3 pet peeves of mine.

1) Getting on the elevator before everyone gets off/Trying to get off the plane before those in front of you.

2) Not returning your shopping cart.

3) Not using your blinker.

Not using your blinker is one of the biggest ones for me because of 3 reasons.

1) It doesn't offer you any significant advantage.

2) In order to perform this, you actually have to "Un-Learn" how to do it.

3) You take away the main piece of communication you have with other cars.

Speaking about the lack of communication and tying it into Episode 072: "Listen To Learn, Not To Respond” I experienced a lack of communication with the doctor yesterday.

As I was trying to explain to him, the entirety of what was going on, I kept being cut-off mid-sentence.

Now, I love this Dr. but have noticed that this seems to be a common theme among doctors.

We are so eager to have an answer that we will form an opinion before we've gathered all of the facts.

That results in us treating the symptom, not the cause.

Finding our WHY is typically something that we are told to do in order to grow.

However, sometimes a WHY can be overwhelming, causing us to "shut-down" because we are not sure where to start with such a big task in front of us.

But if we started with micro-commitments, some small action that we can take now, we can move forward immediately,

This also allows us to detach from the outcome.

When we can attach to the process, we can ensure we are taking action.

First and foremost, Happy Veteran's Day and thank you to those who have served or are currently serving.

I wanted to highlight a couple of Veterans that have had an impact on my life.

David Goggins from the book Living With A Seal. Which I highly recommend.

Also, Jocko Willink.

I share an audio clip of Jocko that I come back to often for guidance.

We all want to know everything and do things on our own,

But really, we learn the most when we ask for help and make mistakes.

If we never make mistakes it means we aren't trying anything new.

In order to grow in any way, we need to try new things and figure out how to get them to work better.

This will automatically lead to mistakes.

And when we make them, we can ask for help as we fix them.

It's ok not to know everything, so get out there and make some mistakes while trying something new.

Motivation just isn’t enough if you don’t take action.

We can listen to all the motivational speeches, motivational quotes, and hang all the motivation posters we want.

But the fact is, if we don’t act and implement, it's all for nothing.

Motivation can only get us so far before we must act on it.

In order to create momentum, we must act as quickly as possible when we are feeling motivated.

Are you solving obstacles or problems?

Problems find us and wait for us to fix them. They are the challenges on the surface.

Obstacles are the reason for the problems. If you can solve the obstacle, you can reduce the problems.

Former NFL player Heath Evans dropped some bombs on me today.

Including ideas like, "master the little things and the big things will naturally be mastered"

He also taught me why I can't really hate the Patriots and Bill Belichick if I am a true fan of football or teamwork.

Amazing things can happen when you begin to come from a place of contribution.

When you start giving to others, you have the ability to receive from a perspective that isn't as individualistic.

Making more room for opportunity and possibilities to enter your life.

On my whiteboard calendar in my office, Eva has written, You're doing better than you think you are. I am PROUD of you! Keep going, you've got this!".

I typically use it for a daily reminder, but what my son wrote on it yesterday made me realize how young someone can be and still have a positive mindset.

My son co-hosts this episode with me.

As much as I want to be the perfect parent, sometimes that doesn't happen.

Today was a prime example.

I didn't listen to my own advice from yesterday and made my case based on just a few keywords.

Resulting in a failed attempt at being a good dad.

"Listen To Learn, Not To Respond”

This weekend, I was locked in battle with a social media giant.

Facebook and I were exchanging blows.

Actually… not really.

But the experience made me stop and think about how our minds work , in general.

I am hosting a class this Thursday for Real Estate agents, to teach them how to start their own podcast for no cost.

In order to get the word out to more agents I decided to run a Facebook ad that targeted… you guessed it, Real Estate Agents. The very people this class is for.

About an hour after I set up the ad I received a notification that my ad was rejected because I wasn’t following their rules for “housing opportunities”.

But…

This wasn’t a “housing opportunity”. This was an ad inviting real estate agents to a class I was offering for free.

No housing involved.

If you are familiar with Facebook ads for real estate, then you will know that they are very strict on how you choose your target audience to advertise to. The lines can sometimes be a bit blurred and they don’t want to take a chance that something can be considered discrimination.

Which I totally understand, but had their algorithm made a decision based on something other than a few keywords, they could have understood what the ad was actually about.

After being rejected, they gave me the opportunity to “request a review”. So I did.

I explained to them in 1 sentence that the ad was for an invite to a class, not for housing. Giving them the FULL story of what it was about.

Guess What?

YEP! It was approved this morning.

This isn’t just a Facebook thing though, this is how many of our minds work.

We tend to listen just long enough to find the keywords that we want to respond to, and make our case. Usually glossing over the rest of the information.

I hear it everyday when I’m talking with people about the company I’m associated with.

People say, “You guys do this”, “you guys do that”, “I know what you are about”, “What I don’t like about your company is...”, etc.

They hear one or 2 things that they remember and make up their mind based on those “facts".

And 9 out of 10 times, those “facts” were given as misinformation. Either by accident due to lack of information on the subject or given intentionally.

Again, not their fault. We are conditioned that to not know something, or to not have a response in a conversation, somehow makes us dumb or stupid. So our automatic response is, “I know”. Constructing a response, regardless of how much information we actually have.

But just like Facebook in this scenario, they were looking for their “keywords” to respond to, and made their initial decision based on just those.

But when presented the facts, they were able to learn what the entire picture was, allowing them to make a different decision. A decision that factored in everything, not just what they wanted to respond to.

This is an example of what happens when you…

Listen To Learn, Not To Respond.

If you have a sentence in your vocabulary that looks like this, "I'm not a (blank) person", then you have already lost.

I am a firm believer that everyone gets multiple opportunities presented to them throughout their lives, but most don't recognize them in order to take action.

I believe it takes 3 things for an opportunity to be executed, it needs to be:

1) Presented

2) Recognized

3) Acted on

When we tell ourselves, "I'm not a (blank) person", we have already lost that opportunity.

The more opportunities we miss out on because they "aren't us", the less opportunities we get to act on.

“I’m not that interesting”

I am lucky enough to know some amazing people that have lived incredible lives.

These people aren’t famous, they don’t live in mansions or drive Ferraris.

But their stories are much more inspiring than any of those things.

I’m talking about people that you’d make a movie about, people that inspire just by being themselves.

Yet, they don’t believe themselves to be inspirational, or even interesting for that matter.

One of those stories comes from a good friend of mine.

After knowing him for some time, we were having a casual conversation and we ended up on the topic of his football ‘injury”.

As we got deeper into the story I was in disbelief.

When he was 26 he was playing a pick-up game of tackle football. During a play he was tackled by the neck.

He didn’t think much about it at the time. But what he didn’t know, was that a blood clot would start forming.

This blood clot would eventually lead to a stroke which left him paralyzed for a year.

He was paralyzed from the face down, preventing him from even being able to speak.

He eventually had to re-teach himself motor skills, including how to walk again.

I can’t even imagine the frustration that must have caused.

Going from an athlete that spent multiple days in the gym to almost an infant at the age of 26.

If you see him know you would never know the adversity that he had to overcome and quite honestly, you probably wouldn’t believe it.

When he first told me about it I was in disbelief and after picking my jaw up off the floor I asked him if he would like to be on the podcast.

I knew this story needed to be shared.

His response, “Nah, I’m not that interesting”.

I beg to differ.

If he were to put his story in a book, I would own it, multiple copies probably.

I think one of our greatest curses is that we believe that we aren't interesting enough for others to be impacted by our stories.

But in reality, there is someone out there right now going through a similar struggle to what he went through that needs something to relate to, something to be motivated by.

Someone that needs to hear his story.

There is someone out there that needs to hear YOUR story.

So share it!

You might be surprised by who you help.

Is that it? Just 68 more times...

I saw a good friend of mine recently and he asked me if I had still been writing my stories. He hadn’t seen any on FaceBook lately and wanted to know what was going on.

Unfortunately, my answer was, “not really?".

Then a couple days later I got a text from my friend Cliff…

“Hey, brother! Happy New Year! I haven’t seen you post in a while. Just making sure everything is ok”.

I text him back right away, assuring that everything was ok.

It felt great, to 1, have people notice I hadn’t been sharing my stories, and 2, reach out to make sure I was ok.

I am grateful for both of these things.

Really there were a couple of reasons I have been lacking in the story-telling department lately.

The first is a little superficial I’ll admit.

I had a streak of 168 straight days of completing daily stories, and on day 169 I submitted the story too late...

Streak broken.

It took a little wind out of my sails, causing me to become a little more relaxed about my daily writing. I still wrote but not as often and nothing that made it further than my notebook.

The second reason has deeper meaning.

Just before the stories stopped my dad and I were on a road trip. Eventually, our conversation ended up discussing the lifespan of the males in our family.

After a quick discussion, it was decided that 85 was a good number.

I thought about that conversation over the next few days and started doing the math.

-Well, dad is 68, males in our family live until 85, that is 17 years-

Great! 17 years seems like a long time.

But then I broke it down.

Since we don’t live near each other, we only end up seeing each other about 4 times per year.

That's when it hit me…

17x4=68… 68 more times that I will see my dad.

That’s not enough!

Obviously this isn’t an exact figure, there are a number of variables to consider

But when it is presented this way, presented as a 2 digit number, reality hits hard.

So for the remainder of his visit, I focused more on him, paying more attention to his mannerisms, listening more closely to the stories he’d shared with me a dozen times before. I dedicated more of my time to him and less time to tell stories.

So if you have been wondering what happened to my stories, that is the gist of it. Well, that along with some other things I’m working on, but those I will save for another day.

For now, I need to figure out a way to double, triple or even quadruple that number.

Like I said, it's not enough. I have to have more, more than…

“Sixty-Eight"

Have you ever started the day with a plan, only to have it blow up in your face? That was me today. My dad has often said, "Man makes plans, God laughs". That is kind of what today felt like. I had everything planned out and I just hit snag, after snag all day. Never really getting into a groove. The good thing is that I know there will be times like these ahead of me and I will just need to navigate and push through. Especially when following something I believe in whole-heartedly. In his book "The War Of Art", Steven Pressfield said this... "The more resistance you experience, the more important your unmanifested art/ project/ enterprise is to you-and the more gratification you will feel when you finally do it" I know there is no growth without struggle, it is being prepared for the struggle and the willingness to get up after being knocked down that will determine the amount of success achieved.

I love sports and think they can play a huge part in who we become in life.

It isn't even the winning and losing that is most impactful.

But to learn how to communicate, lead and work as a team, I feel is the bigger lesson in sports.

Over the weekend Jose Altuve hit a walk-off homerun and his post-game interview, he proved that even though he only stands at 5 foot 6 inches...

He is the biggest leader in the clubhouse.

When we think about quitting, we usually think of it as a negative.

However, this is one of those things that I am not so "black & white" on. There is definitely a touch of grey.

When it comes to my kids giving up on something because they are frustrated they are not getting it right or just don't feel like it, then I don't like quitting.

For example, if they start a sport season, they have to finish out their commitment.

And if at the end of that season they decide they no longer want to play the next season, they can quit then.

But not until they fulfill their commitment they have made to us, their teammates, and themselves.

On the flip-side I think quitting can be a good thing.

Especially if what you are doing is holding you back from becoming something more.

That is how I feel about the day that I tossed the keys on the counter and told my boss, "I'm out"

If I hadn't quit that day, who knows where I would have ended up.

By quitting that day, I was able to pursue something more.

So is quitting a good or bad thing?

I believe it can be both.

Tomorrow I will be hosting a class that will show real estate agents how to create their very own podcast.

This class is to help agents add another tool to their toolbox.

It will be focused on how to build relationships by getting people to know, like, and trust them.

Unfortunately, we are taught in this industry to burst through the door, spamming and bugging people until they are too tired to fight back.

Including one strategy that has us telling homeowners that are trying to sell their own home, that we have a buyer that is interested in their home. Asking if we can come preview it.

The reality is, there is no buyer. There never was.

It is an opportunity for an agent to get in front of the seller and try to get a listing.

I hate this strategy.

I know that some agents do have success with it. I just don't like it, it goes against my core values.

When we know that people do business with those they know, like, and trust, then why are we starting our relationship off with a lie?

If you lied to them, they won't trust you, if they don't trust you, they probably won't like you. If they don't like or trust you, they'll probably wish they didn't know you.

In 2009 I packed up the family (Eva, Makaiylah and I at the time) and we headed back to Washington state. I had been with a company for about 4 years that had recently opened a location in downtown Seattle and applied for a transfer. I took the 1st job available because it was time to come back home to family and friends. Unfortunately, that job was an overnight shift that had me getting home at around 8am, walking in the door as my daughter was getting up for the day. As great as it was to see her first thing in when I got home, it was a struggle to get sleep as well as spend quality time with her. Both sleep and quality time were suffering, as was my health. Graveyard isn’t just a clever name. Anyone who has worked the shift knows the struggle, and if you currently work it… kudos to you. After about 3 months a position became available in another department, giving me an exit strategy from my current position. The trouble was, this company had a rule that you must work 6 months in your current position before applying for a transfer. Knowing there had been exceptions in the past I decided to pursue it, but it wasn't going to be easy. While sitting with the HR director, I began to make my case. Letting him know that I was willing to wait until I had a replacement and that I would train them before moving on to the new department. I followed up by explaining that I had been sleeping on the couch at my friend’s house when I got off work because I didn’t want my daughter to think I was ignoring her as I slept during the day. His response, “well, she just has to understand that it is time for Daddy to sleep”. In my head I screamed “she’s f*cking 3 years old! All she knows is that, "Daddy doesn’t want to play with me". By the way, he didn’t have kids. Though he didn’t have an issue serving up some unsolicited parenting advice. He continued to tell me that success takes sacrifices and he "understands" me because he and his girlfriend spent a few months apart when he got his promotion. “In order to get to this side of the desk, you’ll have to make some tough decisions”, he told me. The funny thing is, I had already made my decision. The only decision that remained, was what the title of my resignation letter would be. To be clear, I wasn’t resigning because I didn’t get the transfer. I knew instantly when he made those comments, that our ideology didn’t align. It wasn’t going to work for much longer, regardless. Although being on “that side of the desk” was important to him, it didn’t mean anything to me. I didn’t want to be on that side of the desk, that was his idea of success, not mine. My idea of success was watching my little girl grow up, not sleeping through it.

I'll be honest with you...

I have been working on my MINDSET for a few years now.

I have been studying different strategies and exercises as I try to find out what works best for me.

I was introduced to Stoicism a few weeks ago, and so far, so good.

Obviously I'm not an expert on the matter and honestly can't even tell you much about it.

But what I have learned so far I have already implemented.

Today I discuss, Amor Fati or The Love Of Fate.

Which basically means to not only be ok with the things that happen to us, but to love them and be better for them.

As Ryan Holiday of The Daily Stoic explains to us...

Marcus Aurelius would say: “A blazing fire makes flame and brightness out of everything that is thrown into it.”

So get out there, take your challenges, love them, and turn them into fuel for your fire!

I’m not perfect and I don’t claim to be, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t tried to be.

The older I get the more I realize that my quest for perfection has hurt me more than it has helped me.

I have seen many of my plans and ideas die as I’ve tried to perfect them before bringing them to fruition.

The challenge with “Perfect”, is that no one is perfect. Regardless of what they may project or what we may see.

The problem is that we are seeing a portion of the story. There are no “behind the scenes” or “Out-takes”.

We only see the edited, condensed version of what people want us to see.

After reading “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” I started to view social media as a highlight reel rather than a play-by-play account of someone's life.

We are seeing the “Best Of” everyone’s life, then comparing our life to theirs.

“Look, they’re in Hawaii. Ugh, it must be nice to have the perfect life like them.”

Meanwhile you just got back from vacation while having the time of your life and they were saying the same thing about you.

Social media has put “Keeping up with the Joneses” on a whole other level… the steroid level.

I get it though, I post when I’m on vacation and other things I think people will like as well.

Because honestly, I don’t think people would get that excited about a photo of me turning in a file titled “Hashtag Paperwork”.

But that is reality, I do that and so do others, it’s just not shared on the highlight reel of social media.

Again, nobody is perfect, regardless of what you may think.

And please, don’t let that illusion stop you from moving forward with your own plan or idea.

Me writing these Facebook posts for example.

They aren’t perfect but I have wanted to write for a long time but I never started.

I didn’t start because in my mind I didn’t have the proper training or qualifications.

I wanted to to have the perfect word, sentence, paragraph, chapter and book before I shared any of it.

Then one day I said to myself, “I have a pen, I have paper, I have my thoughts and I know how to spell. I’m qualified. So, f*ck it! Let’s write”.

So I did.

If I waited for “perfect” it likely would have never happened.

I know we ALL want to be perfect but sometimes…

PERFECT is the problem.

I'm going to share with you one of my biggest weaknesses.

I am a terrible compliment giver and receiver.

The reason I have such a tough time receiving compliments is that when I accomplish something, I expect that I was going to accomplish it. This makes me downplay my achievement.

Making me think it wasn't that difficult or important.

Which causes me to downplay it.

On the opposite side, I have trouble giving compliments because I get so wrapped up in what I'm doing, that I don't come up for air long enough to see what else is going on.

In my opinion, that makes me pretty selfish.

We all want to feel like we belong, are loved, and appreciated.

Yet it is difficult for some of us to express to others, and sometimes even ourselves, these things.

So if you do 1 thing today...

Reach out to someone and thank them, compliment them, or let them know they are appreciated.

It will go a long way.

I read an article today titled: "You’ll Need to Learn These Harsh Lessons Multiple Times Before You Will Experience a Breakthrough", By Tim Denning.

It couldn't have come at a better time.

He goes over these 6 things that you will go through on your way to success.

1) When you fall on your ass, it is good.

2) What you get comes down to what you help others get.

3) The answer is in what you did last night.

4) You want the good life too soon.

5) The workload is double what you think it is.

6) Your gut rarely makes a mistake.

This was something I needed to hear today as I experienced 5 of the 6 lessons just today.

Yes, I try and attract agents to our company, that is no secret.

But what happens when they don't want to join us.

Do we tell each other how great our business is over theirs?

I guess you could but what's the point?

Some people do things a little differently, and you know what?

That is ok.

I was reminded of that today when I was in a conversation with an agent that doesn't see a value for him in our company.

Who would know better if it would be a fit for him or not?

He would!

So instead of arguing with each other and trying to "one-up" each other, we had a quality and respectful conversation and I was able to learn something.

On the back end of this episode, you'll hear how I failed the very first drug test I ever took for a job.

Why do we limit ourselves geographically?

There has never been a better time than now to extend our businesses beyond our previous geographical limitations.

I have been working on this for some time and have successfully built a team of 65 agents that span across 5 states and 2 Canadian provinces.

Essentially, I decided to forego my ego to have my name on the sign outside of the building in order to grow an amazing team internationally.

I also today connected with someone in the UK to help him with his social media content.

The best part...

I was in Las Vegas, and he was in England.

Yet we were able to collaborate as if we were in the same room.

If we continue to limit ourselves to our geographical borders, we will continue to limit our growth.

During my time being sick over the last couple of days, I really haven't done much in the way of work, other than making sure I get this podcast out.

It is a double-edged sword in the fact that I get to catch up on some binge-watching of Netflix while I rest, but on the other hand, I fall behind on work stuff.

So while resting I watched "The Curse Of Oak Island".

A show that follows 2 brothers and their crew while they try to find lost treasure on an island in Nova Scotia, Canada.

It seems at every turn, they are running into problems that get thrown at them.

Even after all of the tests and trials, they have been through, at the end of the season they are happy with their progress.

They wanted more progress but they are happy with the progress that they had made.

It isn't any different for me and what I'm building.

Yes, I want it to grow faster, but I get things thrown at me daily that knock me off course.

But just like the brothers and their crew on Oak Island I move forward and I'm both happy and thankful for the progress that I have made.

“One-Handed”

Last weekend during our vacation in Anaheim, my friend Mario and I decided to shoot some baskets at the hotel’s outdoor basketball court.

On top of the 2nd floor and under the California sun, we grabbed a couple basketballs and made our way there.

As we approached the court there was a younger kid there, maybe late teens early 20’s.

All 3 of us had been shooting around for a bit before I decided to fire one off from half court.

After I did it the kid said "oh, we’re shooting from half court now?”

So he quickly followed with a half court shot of his own.

Obviously both of us with a competitive nature, continued to battle back and forth until he finally hit one. Sending me packing with my tail between my legs.

We continued to shoot around and as is shoot-around protocol, if someone else shoots and you get the rebound but already have a ball, you pass it back to them.

When this happened on one of his shots, I grabbed the ball around the 3 point line and he signaled to me to pass it to him near the basket for an easy lay-up.

As he started to run toward the basket, I led him with a pass just in front of the hoop.

When he reached up to grab it, he pinned it against his chest with his right arm and his left fist.

At the moment it thought, “that is a strange way to catch the ball”.

It wasn’t until a few minutes later that I noticed…

It wasn't his fist... He only had one hand!

We’d been playing basketball with this kid for 20 minutes and had no idea.

It took that long to notice because he didn’t draw any attention to it.

He didn’t ask for sympathy.

And more importantly, he didn’t fear being out there doing what he loved in front of people he didn’t know.

He was truly inspiring.

It reminded me of a video I watched recently. Tom Bilyeu of the Impact Theory podcast interviewed a guy by the name Ed Mylett. (I highly recommend watching it and paying full attention)

Mylett made a comment that took me back a bit, and this kid solidified it. He said...

“The most inspirational person, is the person overcoming the fear of doing something, NOT the person who is excellent at it”

This made me think, “what if LeBron James was out here right now? Who would inspire me more in this moment?

I gotta go with the young kid.

Flag football, soccer, and a Quinceanera.

Culture can be a crazy thing when you don't understand it.

I grew up in a very non-diverse community, ethnically speaking.

So most of us did everything the same or at least similar.

I had a chance to go to a Quinceanera this weekend and experience a different culture.

I was reminded very quickly that our perceptions can create our values.

After learning how much it cost, I was blown away and immediately thought that was too much.

But someone with a view, not factoring the cost but a celebration in culture would believe it to be a value.

This shows the importance of culture and what it is that your culture values.

The same can be said for businesses.

All companies have different cultures, it doesn't make them right or wrong.

It just highlights the different values.

A good friend of mine and host of the "Path To 1 Million", Clifford DuVernois, Posted the question in his VLOG today, What If?

He tells a story about how "What if" can be both a positive and a negative, depending on how you look at it.

His story today sparked me to talk about it as well.

My son is always asking what if in the negative sense. This drives me crazy.

When he started flag football a few weeks ago he said: "what if the ball hits me in the face?".

He is looking in the negative, so I asked him, "What if it doesn't, and you end up loving it?"

"What if?" can take you anywhere you want it to. so choose wisely.

I am currently in a 30-day challenge to improve my business that involves implementing newer strategies to help differentiate yourself.

Today in that challenge, I was asked to write down the reasons why I have yet to take action on something I believe in.

I wrote these 3 words.

Fear. Embarrassment. Ego.

I immediately realized that the FEAR of being EMBARRASSED would lead to a hurt EGO.

And honestly, even admitting this out loud and on paper has me feeling a little embarrassed right now.

But, what I have also realized is that I’m not the only one to feel this way.

I mean, who am I to think that I am some special unicorn that is the only one that carries these limiting beliefs?

I remember a couple years ago sitting in the crowd of a packed Tony Robbins event and hearing him repeat over and over…"Real Original” when someone would explain their “unique” situation. He did as a way to show everyone that “we were not alone”.

I was reminded of this recently when I started reading Think Like A Freak.

A book written by the authors and hosts of the Freakonomics book and podcast.

In the book, they lay out a scenario where you are a soccer player lining up for a penalty kick that will win you and your country the World Cup.

As you make your approach, you analyze the data to decide which way to kick your shot.

You think, “should I go left or right?” Then you notice you have a 7% higher chance of conversion over either side, if you just shoot it straight at the goalie.

Statistics show that 98% of the time the goalie will dive one way or the other, only remaining in the center of the goal 2% of the time.

What is interesting though is that only 17% of penalty kicks at the elite level are aimed at the center.

Now, why if it is statically the highest percentage shot, aren’t more shots going there?

Simple…

Fear. Embarrassment. Ego.

If you shoot to either the right or left and it is blocked or misses wide, no one will fault you. That is what you’re supposed to do.

But if you shoot it directly at the goalie and he doesn’t move and blocks it with minimal effort…

You look like an idiot and you suck at soccer. The fans will be sure to let you know.

Even though, statically speaking, it is a higher percentage shot, it is the public perception that it is a terrible idea.

So, you are more likely to sacrifice an increase in probability to make it, in order to reduce the chance of embarrassment for trying something unconventional.

The same goes for business as well.

I am in an industry that touts practicing very low converting strategies and tactics that haven’t changed much in decades.

And if you fail at these then that is ok, you will be told it is a "numbers game" and you get right back out there and knock on another door.

But, if you travel outside of the road that has been paved for you and try something new, you’ll have opened yourself up for ridicule if it doesn’t work.

The result is, you settle for the road with minimal risks for judgement.

While it feels like a much safer road, the rewards also become minimal.

When you handcuff yourself with that mentality, you do reduce your risk of failure, but also, significantly reduce your opportunity of eXponential success.

Whenever a new opportunity presents itself to you, refuse to pay the F.E.E.

The costs are high when you give into…

Fear. Embarrassment. Ego.

A few months back I was challenged to start sharing video on Facebook.

I did a handful and then stopped.

I don't know why I stopped... it was working.

I was building a presence and people liked to watch them.

They would comment and also send me messages.

So why if it was working, did I stop?

I wish I had the answer, but I don't.

Last weekend I was called out for it.

So I make a couple of announcements in this episode as we move forward into the future of the podcast.

"Paralysis By Analysis”

Have you ever researched something so much that you were overwhelmed?

I did that to myself this weekend and it almost cost me an amazing experience.

After getting as much info as possible, and watching youtube videos on the Angel's Landing hike in Zion National Park, I almost talked myself out of doing it.

In the end, I did it. I completed the hike.

If I would have talked myself out of it, I would have completely regretted it.

This happens to us in business as well.

We breakdown, dissect and pick apart opportunities until they have passed us by.

Sometimes, using a minimal amount of information can be some of the best decisions we've ever made.

We all want to be a part of something...

Why is that?

Why are we so worried about being different.

Today was pajama day for my son's classroom.

In the car on the way to school, he said, "I'm scared".

I asked him why and he told me, "what if I'm the only one in pajamas?"

I told him, "then you're the only one in pajamas".

isn't it interesting that even at 6 years old we have a need to "fit in"

Many times, we don't want to share our ideas with others because we think they will steal them. But the reality is that collaboration can lead to the growth of our ideas.

Share your ideas with someone and you may be surprised at what they can teach you, as you are teaching them.

Today, I have a meeting with a real estate agent to do just that.

He is curious about starting a podcast and wants my help.

He is in my market and he is not on my team. So, technically he is my competition, right?

Only if I chose to think of what I am building as a short term plan.

But I'm in it for the long game, so I don't see him as my competition.

I see him as a colleague and collaborator, someone that can benefit from what I have to share.

Someone that I can share my ideas with and learn from at the same time.

In today's episode, I recap this week's episodes that were based on why traditions can limit our growth. Keeping our minds closed and blocking us from thinking big.

I also share an alternative reason that I am recording this podcast.

Tradition can be a good thing, and usually is.

Your family probably has a few of their own traditions.

Hank Williams Jr. even wrote a song about traditions . Listen here: https://youtu.be/IHjaW9sXl7s

But just because we have them, doesn’t automatically make them right.

As we evolve, some traditions no longer apply yet we try to force them to work.

“That’s how we’ve always done it.”

The challenge with “Traditions” is that they can significantly hinder your growth.

For example, you might not try something different for fear of going against tradition.

And if it doesn’t work…

Forget about it. You’ll never hear the end of it.

“I told you it wouldn’t work.”

Now, I’m not a religious person but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn something from a religious book.

I just started reading The Purpose Driven Church by Pastor Rick Warren.

He had this to say about growing a new church.

“We’ve been able to experiment with far more ideas than the average church - mostly due to the fact that we didn’t have decades of tradition to deal with.”

To me, he is saying that there can be a big advantage of not having tradition in the way.

There is no, “this is how we have to do it.”

Think of Major League Baseball…

The stands are empty every night and the purists want to preserve the game and care too much about stats and records and the interest level continues to drop.

Opposite of that is the NFL. It is constantly changing and adapting, and has never been more popular.

When you are limited in the ways you can do something, the amount of possible growth shrinks significantly.

But when you aren’t bound by those limitations, you can experiment with infinite ways to grow.

Your potential is increased exponentially.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes tradition can be good, especially when it comes to family.

But…

In business and personal development it can interfere with our goals.

We must keep experimenting, and not let ourselves be limited by the chains of…

"Tradition"

"Vinegar & Honey”

Each summer my daughter gets the opportunity to spend a week with her cousins up in WA during her vacation.

A couple years ago, I booked her flight and in the process I declined “Trip Protection”.

Who needs that?

I had everything under control, trip protection would be a waste of money.

…or so I thought.

About a week later I find out that her 6th grade orientation was scheduled during the last 2 days of her vacation. So now, I needed change her flight.

I call the airline and tell the agent that I need to switch her flight. The agent immediately tells me that it will be $75 to change it, plus the difference in flight which was about $50.

Flight protection for $20 didn’t seem so bad at this point.

“Are you kidding me?”

I yelled into the phone.

“It would be cheaper just to buy a new flight”

My immediate reaction was to be pissed off. I didn’t let up, I kept digging at her telling her what a joke it was.

I finally hung up, accomplishing nothing but an increase in my blood pressure.

And the worst part was that it wasn’t even the agents fault. I knew better.

I let myself cool down over the next couple days and gave the airline a call back.

Thankfully, I got a different agent. I was embarrassed that she’d remember me.

With the new agent I led in with a story about how my daughter gets to see her cousins every summer but unfortunately this trip needed to be cut short.

“We found out after we booked the flight that her 6th grade orientation was scheduled at the same time”

I then proceeded to tell her how important I thought it was for her to be there.

“It’s going to be her first year in middle school, I can imagine what a difficult time in a young girl’s life this can be and I just want to make sure that the transition is as smooth as possible”.

She agreed with me and responded,

“Sir, I am going to waive the $75 change fee, you’ll just need to pay the difference of the flight”

I didn’t even ask her to remove it.

This is the power of story.

The 1st agent, I just yelled at like a jerk. I didn’t inspire her or make her feel any emotion other than hating me.

The 2nd agent likely remembered a time when she was entering something new for the first time, maybe even middle school and knew the struggle.

She felt emotion and was inspired to help a little girl during a stressful time.

Plus, we’ve all heard the saying, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar”.

Mix a little honey with a good story and you can inspire anyone.

Whether you are building your business by attracting clients or other industry professionals, there are many ways to do it.

Most of them aren’t right or wrong, but rather a preference of the individual using the strategies.

Sure, some can be more effective than others, but most can work to a degree.

One that I would say that doesn’t work well…

Is trashing someone else in order to get someone to see your value.

In my opinion, if you have to do that, you have no value to offer.1

"Positive World”

I was about 14 when I first realized she didn’t know who I was anymore.

She could no longer care for herself and what words she could speak were rarely structured in a way that made sense to anyone else.

She would forget things here and there, and in some cases would see things that weren’t even there.

She was physically in our world, but mentally she was living in a world of her own.

It wasn’t until a few a few years later that I realized that the only difference between my mom’s world and OUR world was…

Her brain.

Her brain was sick, and was creating her own alternate world.

A negative world.

Things made sense to her but when she tried to explain, all that would come out was “Deh, Deh, Deh”.

I watched as my mom’s brain slowly chipped away at her life until it was no more.

As I grew older, I started to think that if your brain be so powerful that it could create a negative world, couldn’t the opposite be true?

Why couldn’t our brain be so powerful, that it could create a positive world?

Where one thing happens to us and instead of reacting negatively, we choose to respond positively.

I started thinking about this again today after reading a comment on my post from yesterday from my good friend Tiffany.

She said:

“And your positive attitude about life is one of the many reasons why we love you”

This was in response to a comment I made in regards to the car accident I was in last night.

I had 2 directions to go after that accident.

A) I could have said “why is this happening” and continued to create a negative world for me.

Or

B) Accept what happened and be grateful that I, as well as the others involved were able to walk away and go home to their loved ones.

Either way, the choice was mine, and since I believe that LIKE energy attracts LIKE energy, I chose option 2.

Why?

Because I am in the process of building my…

"The Big Snooze Part II”

Staring at the cold, dim-lit sidewalk with my hands on my knees, I slowly look up to see the 2 stalled cars in the middle of the busy street, cars passing by.

I look to my friend and say…

“The F@cking Big Snooze”

If you aren’t familiar with The Big Snooze, it is what Jen Sincero writes about in her book "You are a Badass" to describe ego and how it can prevent you from achieving your goals.

I’ve written about it before, you can read that post here: http://bit.ly/2BTWr8A

She describes that the closer you get to your goal or transformation the more likely the Big Snooze is to show up, just to knock you off of your path.

She states:

“The Big Snooze will do everything it can to stop you from changing and growing”.

She then follows with,

“Sometimes the Big Snooze sets up emotional blocks to try and stop us, other times she gets physical”

In this case it was definitely a physical block, but I’m not ruling out some mind games to follow.

I’ve recently experienced what could quite possibly be the biggest mental growth spurt I’ve ever had, especially over the last few months.

The opportunities that I have been setting myself up for are crystal clear and within reach. Things couldn’t be going any better.

Then all of the sudden…

BOOM!

I get into a car accident.

Although I wasn’t hurt badly in the accident, there will definitely be pieces to pick up, at the same time challenging me to stay the course.

I will be tempted with every excuse there is to "take a day off”, slowly working my way off the path I have been traveling without even realizing it.

Possibly not realizing it until it’s too late.

Although this is a brief setback that will take my attention away from other things, I will embrace this experience and learn all I can from it.

Coming out a better person than I was before.

It’s not bad luck, it’s just…

“The Big Snooze”

“Hello”

“I’ve been in an accident” {Barely Audible}

“What?! Is everyone okay? Where are you?...

“I’m on my way”

As I approach the scene, I see the flashing lights up ahead. I know I can’t drive all the way up so I pull into the parking lot about a block ahead.

I throw the car into “park”, jump out and start running toward the flashing lights.

As I get closer I see the fire truck, firefighters and two smashed cars in the middle of the street that weren’t going anywhere.

I see Eva still sitting in her car, which was one of the two, and she is visibly shaken.

She had just been T-boned… car totaled.

After checking that everyone was going to be fine and no major injuries, I went back to get my car to bring it closer.

When I got back, Eva and I got into the car to wait for the tow truck to take the car away.

This was accident #2 of 3 that would happen over a 5 month period. Including being rear-ended twice while at a stoplight.

This could have been a perfect spot in our lives to say “why us” or “It’s just my luck”.

But as my luck would have it, that exact morning I just read chapter 4 of the book “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero.

This chapter is titled “The Big Snooze”.

The “Big Snooze” or “BS”, is the idea that when you try to make major changes to your life and progress, random things will happen.

Things trying to derail you and throw you off of your path.

As we sat in that car talking about what happened all I could think about was…

This is BS. This is the Big Snooze.

I have written previously about the fact that we CAN’T always control what happens to us, but we CAN always control how we react to it.

Keeping that in mind along with just reading the “Big Snooze” chapter and knowing that everyone was going to walk away from this accident with only minor scrapes and bruises, I made a comment.

A comment that, depending on how well you know me will decide how surprised you are by it.

To lighten the mood and bring everything back into perspective, I looked to Eva and said…

“Should I give them my card”. Referring to the other couple involved in the accident.

She said “What?!”. Probably wondering what is wrong with me.

I told her, “well, I’m sure they are looking for a house with a 1-car garage now”.

She then, in full eye-roll motion let me know know what a stupid idea that was. (Possibly a Joe “Dad" Joke)

Shitty things happen to all of us, but just know that we get to choose the path that we go down after they happen.

Is it the “woe is me” path or the “I will come back stronger” path?

That day changed my perspective.

Instead of thinking, “why is this happening?”

I started thinking, “this is happening because I’m getting closer, just another challenge to overcome”.

It’s just BS.

It’s just...

“The Big Snooze”.

“What if failure didn’t matter…”

Would you be likely to take more risk or simply continue what you’re doing?

This “F” word is quite possibly more powerful than the real one. This word has the ability to build up, break down, inspire and discourage.

Some welcome it, some learn from it, and some fear it.

The funny thing is, it is not in our nature to assign any value to failure. It is something we are taught and have to learn.

Think about it…

When we are babies, we don’t take our first step, fall down, call it quits and decide we will never walk. We get up, do it over and over again until we get it right

Actually, for pretty much the first decade of life we are colossal failures, many times over.

What is the result of those failures?

We learn, adjust, recalibrate. We find a way to make it work because we haven’t been taught yet that we “can’t” do something.

A study that I read awhile back stated that we learn more by the time we are 12 years old than we will for the rest of our lives.

The reason…

Experiment. Fail. Learn.

When we are young we are experimenting daily, almost everything we do is an experiment. The older we get the more we think we know so the less we experiment due to the fact we think we already know the outcome or that we might fail.

I was listening to well-known astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on the Joe Rogan podcast when he explained this further.

He told a story of a mother walking with her daughter through a parking lot after it had rained.

As he watched they approached a puddle and thought to himself, “please let her jump in that puddle, don’t rob this experiment from her”. Just before they reached the puddle the mother pulled her away from the puddle so that she didn’t get wet.

Tyson explained his disappointment that the little girl didn’t get to experience for herself why she shouldn’t have jumped in the puddle.

Should she had been able to conduct her experiment she would be able to decide herself if the ride home in wet clothes was worth it. She “knows” now that she shouldn't have done it but wasn’t given the opportunity to know WHY.

This can be applied to my 5 year-old son Camden last week.

He is so eager to help especially when we come home from the grocery store that he wants to bring everything in.

I came home with a 5-gallon jug of water that he wanted to bring in the house for me.

I knew he wouldn’t be able to lift it but I thought about what Tyson said and let him have his experiment. After several unsuccessful attempts he finally said “you can take it daddy, maybe I’ll do it when I get stronger”.

At 5 years old he just failed, for probably the 100th time that day but it didn’t faze him. He assessed that he needed more strength and figured at some point he would get it, enabling him to lift it.

Failure didn’t matter to him.

So what would you do if failure didn’t matter?

Would you decide to try out for “The Voice”?

Or

Write that screenplay you’ve always wanted to?

Or maybe even…

Quit your lucrative job in sales, become an urban farmer and eventually move to the “country” because your success has outgrown your facility like my good friend Roman.

If you operated as if failure didn’t matter, you might surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.

About a month ago weeks ago I decided to start this podcast.

Yesterday I noticed today that after 19 episodes I have 101 total downloads, minus how many times I downloaded my own episodes to hear how they sound.

Not bad right?

Well, if you are an avid podcast listener, you will know that statistically speaking, not only is this NOT good, it’s borderline pathetic.

For example Joe Rogan averages about 3 Million downloads per episode.

So that should put me around 57 Million downloads for my 19 episodes.

Unfortunately I have come up just short, only missing the mark by 56,999,899 downloads.

So close!

Compared to Joe Rogan I am garbage and I should probably quit now before I continue to embarrass myself.

This is true… only if I am solely interested in downloads.

But that isn’t the case, my goal is to share stories and ideas that inspire others to become they best version of themselves possible.

As I look at the very, very low number of 101 downloads, I am reminded of and focus on the number 1.

The 1 message I woke up to this morning.

“Hi Brandon Just reaching out to tell you how your consistent posts of positivity and support of the intimate topics so many are hesitant to touch on, that you have brought so much power and strength to, is so amazing. I am so proud of you Brandon. Keep doing what your'e doing.”

This is what matters to me, not the downloads.

It’s ALL about…

“The Connection"

How quickly it can ALL change…

I have to admit, yesterday I was in a “funk”. Things weren't going as planned and while little things started to stack on each other, I became less and less optimistic.

Needless to say, I didn’t have a very productive day and it was nobody’s fault but my own.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying…

“Life is 10% what happens to us, and 90% how we react to it”

Yesterday was a perfect example of that statement.

But like I said, it is funny how quickly things can change.

After coming off a down day, a day that for the lack of a better term, sucked.

This morning I ended up on a video share meeting with my real estate agent partners in Utah, and just like that, I was back on top, ready to go.

There is something about teamwork and collaboration that gets me fired up.

I don’t know if it is from the years of playing team sports or what, but when I see a group of people come together, it just fires me up.

Especially when I get to be a part of it.

As we sat there sharing thoughts and ideas on how we could continue to get our strategies in front of agents who are ready to start treating their real estate business, like an actual business rather than just “selling homes”, we started coming up with some amazing ideas.

Some were brand new and others have been in the works for a while.

Either way, it was able to get me out of my “funk” and validate how important the system I am creating is.

The earlier agents start to realize that they’re going to need to add to their existing arsenal when it comes to ways to generate revenue streams the better off they will be.

And the longer they will be able to last in the industry.

That is why I am planning for it now. So when they make the transition, I can help make it as easy as possible for them.

It is kind of unusual that I am building something that agents don’t even realize that they need yet.

But knowing that it will be something that can help them in a way they never thought possible before, now that, is…

Why I’m Excited For The Future"

“Frustration"

Why are we always sold on how great everything is?

Rarely ever does anyone share the struggles of what it takes to get where you want to go.

It is always a before and after photo.

Either after losing 30lbs or a rags to riches, “how I went from selling 1 home per year to this photo of me standing next to a private jet”

I get that everyone loves an underdog story, I’m no different. I love seeing people overcome obstacles too.

But the disservice to those watching is that they are filled with false hope and beliefs that it happens overnight.

It doesn’t prepare them for the true struggle they are about to embark on.

That is why I started the “Learn For 2” podcast.

To document the journey I am on to help real estate agents transition into the next stage of their career, and do it comfortably.

Part of the process for me to do this is to create a system that can be duplicated by any agent that is ready to come onboard.

As I have seen it used in other industries, I have yet to see it in the real estate industry.

That means I have a limited amount of people that I can emulate, also meaning, I will have to take the brunt of the trial and error.

But, this is something that I signed up for.

I know there are going to be ups and downs during the process and I’m ready for them.

The past few weeks have been mostly filled with “ups”. Since starting the podcast I’ve gone from 45 partners to partnering with 57 agents from around the country and Canada.

And… it has been awesome!

But as I continue to grow the team and put the processes in place to get this system as perfect and duplicatable as possible, I’m bound to run into some down days.

Today is one of those days.

Nothing seems to be going as planned.

One of the major pieces to the system went down and I have been dealing with it, trying to get it fixed or I can’t efficiently communicate with other agents the way the system is designed.

Then, an email comes across my phone that makes me feel like it is just taking too long, “Am I really that far behind?"

“I want to move faster”

Then the self-doubt kicks in, “Am I even good enough to make this work?”, putting me into a funk. Making it even harder to get anything done.

In most cases I would have waited until I overcame this to share with others.

Joking about how it wasn’t that bad and say, “Hey! everything is great now"

But that goes against what this podcast is all about.

If I only shared the highlights of the journey it wouldn’t be real, it wouldn’t be authentic. The struggles are just as important as successes when it comes to the growth throughout the process.

Even though I’ve had a great few weeks in a row, every now and again I’m going to face a “down” day or 2.

The important part is to keep going, and to not give in to the…

Frustration

“Community"

Well… I’m back from a charity softball tournament from last weekend. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t play that great but it was still an awesome experience.

This tournament started 16 years ago for a woman we called "Mouse" that I played with many years ago that was diagnosed with cancer, to help her live out her final days as comfortably as possible.

The tournament has been named “The Mouseabout"

Now, each year the money is raised to give to other recipients.

This year there were two recipients that split over $15k in donations raised.

I thought about this community that I grew up in and how amazing it is.

It reminds me why I want to surround myself with people just like it, in both business and personal life.

I want to have a community of people that have heart, drive, and vision.

A community that is filled with people who want to lift each other up when they are down, and express gratitude when they are up.

This community, my hometown, is the same one I spoke about when I spoke about my mother in episode 5.

They are special.

At one point while watching another game I saw one of the recipients talking to one of the players, Angela, who I also played with when playing with Mouse.

The recipient looked at her and told her how grateful she was to be receiving these donations that we were raising.

Angela then hugged her and said, “it was an honor to play for you”.

I got chills when she said that, and have them as I write this.

I too was honored to be a part of this and playing for her.

Although we played a softball tournament, it was about more than that.

It was much bigger than just a game.

Yeah, our team struggled and were eliminated early, but just by being there we came out as winners.

Experiencing this is a reminder that solidifies that I know I am on the right path as I build my own community.

A community of builders and givers, that not only want success for themselves but also want to contribute to their tribe as we grow this thing together.

I will never downplay the importance of…

Community

“Karma”

One thing I know is that I believe in karma.

But to what extent and how it works is something I am still a little unclear on.

I’m not sure if it is some outside force maintaining the balance of the world, or just a sum of our actions.

Meaning that, if I am constantly treating people like garbage and always “taking” while never “giving”, enough people will notice this and treat me as I treat others. Therefore, never offer me a helping hand or opportunity.

On the flip side, if people notice that I am always doing things for others and treating them respectfully, chances are, they will treat me the same and want good things for me.

I tend to believe it has more to do with the latter.

Another thing I know is, that if you have listened to me for any amount of time, you will know that I have a goal to attract the RIGHT people to my team.

That is why when I see people “making their own luck” I can’t help but get excited.

Recently, a former colleague of mine Brian Wiltshire, was laid-off during the MGM layoffs a couple months ago that affected over 1,000 families.

It wasn’t that Brian got laid-off that had me rooting for him. It was how he responded to it.

As long as I have known Brian, he has always found himself in a good mood, regardless of the situation. Always singing, dancing, and telling jokes.

Making it impossible for those around him to be in anything BUT a good mood.

When he learned that he was being “let go”, it was no different.

Immediately after he found out that he didn’t have a job anymore, he posted a quote on social media that sums up his attitude. He said…

“There are no tough times, only tough people”.

Meaning, regardless of the situation, he was going to come out on top, and it was in HIS control.

This right here, is a special mindset.

A mindset of someone that I am rooting for.

There was no “why me?” Or the use of the acronym FML.

He took a punch, shook it off, and went to work solving the problem.

As I watched through social media over the next few weeks, he kept us up to date on any job fairs or interviews he was going on and was eventually rewarded for his efforts by landing a new position

He didn’t say anything negative about his former employer, in fact, he thanked them publicly for the opportunity. And when he started his new job, he shared his gratitude for the new opportunity.

Congrats Brian on the new job.

I have been rooting for you and will continue to do so.

I would love to have 100 of you on my team.

In terms of success, the question isn’t "will he succeed?” It is "how much will he succeed?”

It’s stories like this that make me believe that you can create your own luck, create your own success, and create your own…

Karma

“The Red X”

A friend of mine and I had a conversation recently about the more options we have, the harder it is to make decisions.

Which, on the surface, seems strange to me.

You’d think that with more options available to you, the more likely it would be that you would find exactly what you were looking for.

But it doesn’t happen that way. We get information overload and start an internal debate about “why this one is better than that one but that one is better than this one”, and so on.

Like today for instance, my friend Mario and I had taken our families on vacation for the weekend and while at Downton Disney we went for a churro.

Always a fine choice.

However, they had more than just the traditional cinnamon and sugar churro.

They had salted caramel, Oreo, watermelon and about 4 other flavors.

How are you supposed to make that decision and not regret it?

My simple decision to have a churro just became more complex, just by adding more “options”.

This isn’t the only time I’ve been overwhelmed with options.

About 10 years ago, when once again, I was trying to get myself back into shape.

I would rifle through the newest workouts in Men’s Health magazine trying to decide what program would work best.

I’d try one for a week, then switch to another for a week, then another and another.

Constantly changing the plan and never really getting results.

Then I stumbled across a book called "Body For Life" by Bill Phillips.

In this book there was a 12-week plan. 84 days of exactly what I was supposed to do.

I did have to choose the exercises from a list provided but it limited my options, causing me to focus on just getting it done.

Inside the book was an 84 day calendar with the blueprint…

Day 1 - Upper Body

Day 2 - Cardio

Day 3 - Lower Body

Day 4 - Cardio

Day 5 - Upper Body

Day 6 - Cardio

Day 7 - Rest

This would repeat for 12 weeks, alternating from 2 upper body workouts to 2 lower body workouts each week.

I printed this calendar off and put it on my fridge.

After I would finish the workout for the day I would put a big “red X”, marking that day complete.

After about 2 weeks something interesting happened. My original goal of getting in shape was secondary.

My new mission?

No missed ”X’s”

After seeing 14+ “red X’s” on the fridge I became obsessed with them, there was no way I was going have a gap in this calendar.

The workout plan became simplified.

Instead of focusing on the actual workout itself, I just knew I needed that “red X”.

84 “red X’s” later, that simplification led to the biggest gains… or losses, I had ever had to date.

I was down 25lbs and 8% body fat.

All due to a “red X”.

“Collaboration"

So many times in my life, I was always so concerned about being 100% original and ideas had to be mine.

I was such a "lone wolf”.

Then I realized how many pizza restaurants are out there, and new ones popping up every day.

No one is inventing pizza anymore.

They are just putting their “spin” on it.

I am bold enough to say that there are no original Ideas, only ideas that have evolved from something that already existed.

Take social media for instance…

You might say that is an original idea, but the reality is that it existed in a more personal, in-person form.

We used to have people over and share physical photos of our vacations with them. Have face to face conversations and mail letters.

It is still the same thing, just moved to an online community where our reach has expanded exponentially.

This is the same with the company I work for.

We still handle real estate transactions as they have been handled before, but we have moved it to a platform that is much more efficient, cost-effective, and allows us to collaborate without the limitations of geographical borders.

The amount of collaboration I have been a part of for the last 20 months or so is completely staggering.

Just last night for instance, I was on a text message thread involving agents that spanned across 4 states.

We had an agent send a text that read, “URGENT”.

She needed help and 7 agents jumped at the chance to provide value, right then and there.

The best part, we were all working toward one goal, working as one team.

All moving in the same direction.

No ego, just solutions.

Although I used to be such a lone wolf and loved working by myself, this group has changed me.

I am forever grateful for each and every one of them that I have met and have had the chance to collaborate with so far.

I look forward to all the others that choose to join us in the future, as we build our team without ego, and build with…

Collaboration.

"Vacation Intimidation”

As real estate agents, we work hard with the hope that we will get to play hard.

The challenge is, when is it time to play?

For the most part, agents have a tough time “turning it off”.

Knowing that we typically work with a single input to single output business model, meaning that we work with a client to buy or sell a home, we get paid solely on that home sale and just that one time.

When working with that particular model, it can be scary, and even intimidating to go “play” or take a vacation.

We know that if we are not working at all times, we are not generating any income.

So while we are on vacation we find ourselves checking our phones, stepping away from family and friends to take a call while at dinner. How can we really relax while on vacation?

I had this exact thing happen last year while my family and another family spent the day at Knott’s Berry Farm.

While everyone else was having a great time and enjoying each other’s company. I was stepping out of lines for rides and stuck on the phone, putting out fires and trying to respond to new leads.

It isn't what I wanted to do, but the way my business was built at that time, it was what I needed to do in order to survive.

No wonder so many agents worry about taking vacation. For most it’s a double edged sword.

On one hand, you may lose out on business because you are gone, but when you get there, you lose out on family. Running away frequently to answer calls, texts, and emails.

That is why I have been implementing, a single input to multiple output model into my business.

This type of model allows me to step away from my business and have it continue to run, giving me my life and time back to spend with my family. Allowing me to not be afraid of vacation.

By replacing the 1 to 1 strategy that I and way too many other agents had been stuck in, with a 1 to many approach, a whole new world emerged for me.

One that eliminated the threat of…

Vacation Intimidation.

I know. I know. I know.

Stop Learning?

That seems counterintuitive, especially from a guy that hosts a podcast called “Learn for 2”.

But hear me out, what I have learned recently has changed my original thinking on the topic.

It is no question that I am a big believer in educating yourself, but when is it too much?

I used to think that in order to be successful, you needed to read… a lot!

While I still believe that to be true, you must also execute what you’ve learned in order for it to make any significant level of impact.

Recently, I was listening to a podcast by Steve Larsen. He was saying that he was in the execution phase and not the learning phase.

And during this phase, he would only be reading things that solve the current problem he was having. Allowing him to focus on executing the next step, instead of focusing on the next 30 steps.

He learned this “Low Information Diet” from Tim Ferris and attributes his success to it.

This strategy prevents him from overwhelming himself, trying to get too many things done, instead of just focusing on the NEXT step.

This of course made me feel better about my bookshelf that is littered with half-read books.

I have learned more over the last 3 years than I have my entire life from these books, but I didn’t consider myself much of a reader because there so many books that I started but didn’t finish.

On top of that, I belonged to a storytelling group that would make great recommendations almost daily. I couldn’t keep up with them, sometimes ordering 2 or 3 books at a time.

The challenge was, I’m not a fast reader, so I felt like I was falling behind.

Although, I didn’t stop learning I kept jumping from book to book, without implementing.

So the things I would learn, I’d forget about because I never put them into action. Therefore wasting the knowledge I had acquired.

With this idea to stop learning when the time is right, has really opened my eyes as a way to get more things accomplished.

Now that I am also in the execution phase, I need to focus on executing, until a problem arises that is when I will start to learn to solve that immediate problem.

I used to be so much more of a “Thinker” than a “Doer”. But with this strategy, I can force myself to take action immediately without adding more distractions.

Besides, I can’t take step 22, without completing the 1st step.

So if you are working on something and in the “execution phase”…

Stop it!

Stop Learning.

“Opportunity”

I am lucky enough to have my dad in town for the week as we end our summer vacation and get ready to send the kids back to school.

As we were driving around today I asked him what were some reasons that he thought might keep people from achieving their own success.

One of his answers was opportunity.

Interesting, I thought. Did he mean the lack of opportunity?

So we started discussing what we though opportunity was.

Was it simply something that happens by chance?

You know, right place at the right time type of thing.

But we agreed that there was more to it than just that.

We decided that there were 3 basic elements to opportunity with chance being one of them.

These were our 3 elements:

  1. The opportunity presenting itself (chance).

  2. Recognizing the opportunity presented.

  3. Being prepared to act on that opportunity.

I believe these are all of equal importance.

Obviously you need the opportunity to present itself but if you don’t recognize it, it might as well have never been there.

The same goes for being prepared for it.

If it presents itself, you recognize it but are not prepared for it, you can’t act on it.

That would be a missed opportunity.

For example, about a year and a half ago I sat in the same room and even at the same table as a friend of mine at one of the most amazing charitable events I have ever witnessed.

Since then, he has hosted multiple of these same events. Bringing in 10’s of $1,000s in donations to his local community.

We both saw and recognized that same opportunity at exactly the same time. The difference was…

He was prepared for it and I wasn’t.

By possessing ALL 3 elements of opportunity he was able to take advantage of it.

I know we all have different upbringings, journeys and life paths.

And no, I am not that naive to believe that everyone will get the same opportunities or even the same amount of them.

Some may get better opportunities than others and some more frequent.

But I do believe we all get them.

It just depends on if we can recognize them and are prepared to act on them.

“The Fire-Walker”

There I stood, barefoot. Just the bottoms of my feet touching the pavement below me.

I had just made my way through the arena to find myself standing in line.

Drums echoed through the parking lot and the smell of burning coals filled the air.

Slowly, I inched forward and the sound of drums grew louder.

Now it was my turn and a voice yelled…

“Make Your Move!”

With my right hand clenched into a fist I pound my left chest 3 times, arch my back while looking straight into the sky and yell as loud as I can.

I take one step forward and without hesitation continue walking on.

I just did it!

I just walked on fire!

This was almost 3 years ago at a Tony Robbins seminar in San Jose.

I would be lying if I said didn’t suffer from anxiety pretty much the entire day in anticipation for this.

I really didn’t know what to expect, the only thing I knew was that I had to do it.

Not for anyone else, but for myself.

As Tony instructed us on how we were about to walk on fire he put an emphasis on the metaphor behind it.

He explained that the once we started walking, the only way to get burned was if we stopped or tried to turn back.

At the time I didn’t really grasp the concept.

It wasn’t until quite a bit later that I fully understood what he meant and how it applied in real life.

A few months after this event, I started training for my first trail race.

I downloaded an app that set up a training schedule for the next 4 months to get me from where I was to where I needed to be.

About 6 weeks in I was scheduled to run 5 miles, something I don’t ever remember doing before that.

But as I left my driveway something incredible happened…

Just as soon as it started, my workout was over.

Not physically, but mentally.

Yes I still had to physically run the route but the mental challenge of finishing it was already complete.

All the dragging myself to get started, the “I don’t want to do this” or “I don’t know if I can do this” was gone.

All it took was that first step, and in my mind, I was already done with the run.

This is when I first understood what he meant that day.

"The only way I could get burned was to stop(quit) or turn back(retreat)."

But the momentum of that first step carried me the rest of the way.

I was reminded of this again this yesterday when Jessica wrote on her Facebook page, sharing her goal to go from not running at all, to completing a marathon.

All she has to do, is just take that first step.

After all, she can’t run a whole marathon without it.

"Finding The Right People”

In the real estate industry it is common to think, “The more, the better”.

Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t necessarily true.

Right now you can walk down the street and ask any broker to work for them, and their answer will likely be… “Yes”. Without even knowing much about you.

The idea is just to grow numbers. Which could be a short-term solution.

But the challenge with just taking anyone, is that you won’t find out if they are a “fit” for your overall plan until they start and it becomes too late.

Now you are spending your time putting out fires and dealing with turnover, as your business becomes a revolving door of agents coming and going.

Not good for a sustainable long-term solution.

For instance, I am looking for problem-solvers, go-getters, and do-ers.

I’m looking for people that will at least “Google it”, before they come and ask me.

This is not saying that I don’t want to teach people, it is quite the opposite.

I want to teach people that they can’t learn on their own because they don’t know where to look. I want to expand on what they already know.

I don’t want to spend time showing them how to make a “landing page”. You can literally go to YouTube and learn how to make one in 20 minutes.

I want to teach them How to use that landing page effectively.

Since I am passionate about finding the right people, I have implemented an application process, so that only those who are committed to growth, will make it to the next round.

This is something I learned from what I believe to be the top hospitality company in the world, The Four Seasons.

Years ago I worked for them, and I will never forget the day I dropped off my application. (Yes, it was back before online applications)

When I dropped it off at HR, they asked me to wait in the lobby for a moment.

This struck me odd, as most places I had ever dropped an application off at, I just left.

A few minutes later they called my name and brought me to a room, where the conducted an interview on the spot.

When that was done, they asked me to take a seat in the lobby again.

They took me back again for another interview, this time, with a different person.

I believe I had one more interview that day before they scheduled me for the following week for a final interview, in which I was offered the job.

They wanted to “catch me off-guard” and see how I reacted to it.

  1. I wasn’t prepared for an interview so I didn’t have a chance to rehearse any answers.
  2. I interviewed with multiple people so they could tell how I interacted with different personalities.

Their philosophy is that they can teach a skill to anyone with the right attitude, but they can’t teach an attitude to someone with the right skill.

And again, that is why I have an application process in place.

Just the process of going through the application will start to sort out those that are just interested from those that are committed.

And… I’m looking for those that are committed.

I believe that in order to survive the “Long Game”, you’ll need more that “just anyone. You’ll need to surround yourself with…

The RIGHT People.

Just 1 week in, and I am Super excited.

I know yesterday's episode was a little heavy, but the reason I wanted to share that with you is because it is a huge part of who I am. And, in order for you to understand who I am and where I am coming from, you need to know that part of me.

With that being said, after just one week, I can already see the impact it is having.

That is why I encourage you to start publishing, like... right now!

I don't care which vehicle you choose... video, vlogs, blogs, posts or articles. It doesn't matter.

Just start letting other people know who you are..

The right people will GET IT and want to be a part of what you are doing.

For example: I had 2 people who listened to the podcast, reach out to me. Keep in mind the podcast was less than 5 days old at the time.

Those online conversations moved into phone conversations, and we are currently trying to seek avenues that would be mutually beneficial for us to forge a partnership.

It took less than 5 episodes to accomplish this type of a connection.

So, if you have taken just 1 thing from this podcast so far, and one that you can implement immediately, it's this...

Just publish!

It doesn't have to be perfect, but it has to be done.

So I encourage you to put yourself "out there" and get "real" with people. They will thank you!

Updated stats for the team

We added a 9 agent team from Canada to the organization, putting me at a team total of 55.

"To Me, Legacy Is Paramount"

Its October 23rd 1999 just before 11am and the sun is out, yet still cold enough in my hometown of Cle Elum, WA. that we can see our breath.

I had just turned 18 a couple months before and graduated high school the previous June.

I find myself with my sister and father as we make our way through a parking lot full of cars into the church.

It was packed to capacity, standing room only, and we are directed to the front row.

After the service we are the first to exit the church, as we walk out slowly, arm in arm, I see the faces of an entire community, the community I grew up in.

They shared grief and sadness for us.

There are aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Even teachers that my older sister and I both had. As well as colleagues of my father’s that are there.

This crowd is made up of generations of people that have known my family for what seems like forever.

As we turn left to finally exit the church, I look up and see Mike, his son Ericis one of my best friends to this day and has been since we were 6.

Mike looked at me but didn’t say a word...

He just reached out with his right hand to shake my right hand then covered it with his left as a comforting gesture.

He then nodded and had a look in his eyes that said,

“We Got You”.

My sister, father, and I continued to go outside, and now the parking lot is not only full of cars but people too.

There were people who couldn’t get in because the church couldn’t hold them.

As strange is this may sound, I cannot help but smile when I think of this day…

If you haven’t figured it out yet, this was the day of my mother Cheri’s funeral.

You are probably asking yourself,

“Why is this a day that makes him smile?”

I will tell you why. But first, a little about my mom…

“Instant Gratification vs. Delayed Gratification”

Whenever we start something, looking for change or new results, it seems that we are usually wired to expect immediate results.

I wouldn’t say that is entirely our fault though.

With the abundance of items marketed to us with “instant” results on a daily basis, we are kind of conditioned to think that everything happens overnight.

“I took this pill and lost 30lbs”

“I took this course and make $100k/month”

The reality is…

It all takes work. Work that is done every day, with decisions and effort.

I belong to a Facebook page called “Keto For Beginners”.

This page is dedicated for people that are interested in the Ketogenic lifestyle. Keto is designed to lose weight and increase energy through a high fat and low carb diet.

At least once a week I see someone post, “I have only lost 15lbs in 20 days, what am I doing wrong?’.

15lbs in 20 days? What are you doing wrong? That is amazing in my opinion!

But again, we have been conditioned to crave that instant gratification, thinking it should have been more.

Could you imagine being at the gym and whatever muscle you were exercising at the time grew instantly?

Yeah, that’d be awesome… but that’s not how it works.

The group I belong to has recently been discussing the importance of getting 1% better each day.

You see, we are all playing the “long game”.

Delayed gratification if you will.

We understand that anything of substance will not happen overnight. It is the daily grind that we must uphold in order to achieve our results.

We just want to get 1% better each day, accumulating our progress.

I recently started going back to crossfit to increase my functional strength and health.

It doesn’t take just 1 class to do this, its the culmination of many classes that will yield the highest results.

I can’t go to 1 class and expect to be at the same level that a guy that’s been going there for 5 years is at.

I must trust the process.

Even though I live in a city built on instant gratification.

Get what you want, when you want 24 hours a day or put $20 in a machine and walkout 10 minutes later with $500.

I have recently learned that delayed gratification and the willingness to put the time into what your goals are is much more substantial than the instant gratification of an overnight success.

"Imperfect Action”

A few weeks ago I decided to change our flooring. The original floors were tile and were likely there from when the house was originally built, so it was time for a change.

I didn’t think it would be a huge deal because I would be laying down laminate wood flooring which I have done before.

Plus, I had some help on the way.

I figured, demo on Saturday and lay the laminate on Sunday, "should be quick and easy”…

Or so I thought.

There is a saying my dad has told me on occasion, “Man makes plans, God laughs”.

I found that saying to be pretty accurate.

My help ended up getting hurt at work and wasn’t able to make it. “No big deal”, I thought. “Get some rest and heal up”.

I decided to continue…

The demo started out great, the tiles were popping up without hardly any resistance, at one point there were about 8 tiles that came up at once.

“This is so easy”

Then I got to a spot on the floor where the tiles were just stuck to.

This was just small portion of the floor, about 40 square feet, but it took me just as long here as it did to rip up the other 700 feet.

So now, my Saturday project had just moved into Sunday. Causing me to not lay a single piece of flooring until 5pm Sunday night.

Like I said earlier, I have laid laminate flooring before, so I was still confident I could finish it rather quickly.

That was before I realized that this particular flooring was multi-width/multi-length planks.

Typically they are all the same size and you can just lay them in place and cut when you get to the wall.

Not this stuff.

I had to layout 3+ rows prior to installation to make sure that the planks would line up correctly when I got to the point that they’d meet.

I just stepped into a different realm of flooring that I had zero experience with.

By Tuesday I was done with the kitchen and before you know it, that 2 day weekend project I had planned, took me 9 days to complete.

It was frustrating, I wanted to quit no less than 30 times.

I looked at the bare floor thinking to myself, "this will never get done”.

But I still continued.

I made hundreds of cuts, none of them perfect.

I made plenty of mistakes, but didn’t let any of them stop me.

It reminded me of what being a business owner, entrepreneur, and creator is all about.

It is not about building something perfect before it is shared with others.

It is about a collection of mistakes and imperfections that lead to a desired result.

And, that result can become an incredible transformation.

Was it easy? Nope.

Was it Fun? Kinda.

Did I learn something from it? 100%.

Am I Craftsman now? Not even close.

So how did I transform this ugly tile floor into something beautiful?

I did it the same way you can transform yourself in any area of your life.

By taking action. By taking…

"Imperfect Action"

“The Maven. The Connector. The Salespeople.”

In Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point”, he describes 3 types of people.

The Maven - Creates change through information & ideas.

The Connector - Creates change through people.

The Salespeople - Creates change through persuasion.

Now, you might argue that me working in sales as a Realtor® would automatically put me in the “Salespeople” category.

Even though being in sales is my job, it’s not “what I do”.

There is much more to all of us than the moniker we get assigned from the jobs we have.

So, while on the surface, “Salespeople” might be the logical category for me based on my job, I have realized that probably isn’t the correct placement for me.

Underneath the sales aspect of my job lies a life of connecting.

I connect buyers and sellers.

I connect experts and their advice with listeners that need to hear it on the podcast I used to host.

I was actually just reminded recently of an episode about depression and addiction when someone thanked me because they reached out to my guest Kristine for her advice after reading this post and listening to the episode.

-Side note: How awesome is that?!?!

And just recently I have been lucky enough to be put in a position to connect others in my industry with opportunities they weren’t even aware existed.

Even on a personal level, when I know someone is looking for something and I know another person that has an answer, I feel it’s my duty to connect them.

So while sales may be my job, it's not “what I do”.

What do I do?

I connect.

Hey guys, thank you so much for joining me in this very first podcast of the learn for two podcasts. I'm very excited, uh, to get this thing started for one and very excited, uh, to go on this journey with all of you. And that's, that's what it is. It's going to be a journey. Um, I'm not a professional podcaster, so you know, hopefully that you're not, you're not looking for that cause it's definitely not. But, um, but what it is is it's a chance for all of us to grow together and learn some things. Um, the podcast is called [inaudible] for two reason being is that, uh, I've really taken the approach of learning for too, every time I learned something, I take it with the idea that I'm going to teach it to someone else so I can learn for myself and learn for one other.

Uh, and that's been a great, great thing for me as far as being able to retain a lot of the, a lot of the stuff that I learned. So basically what we're going to get down to is the real estate model is broken. Uh, the real estate industry is changing whether or not you want to believe it is or not, how we're, how we're approaching it. Um, I may be moving a little bit faster and bigger cities and then there's smaller cities and uh, you know, smaller towns and things like that. But there's definitely changes on the horizon and it's up to you. Do you want to be on the tracks when that train comes through or do you want to be able to adapt and get out in front of it? And my choice was to go ahead and adapt and get out in front of it.

Um, so my goal through this podcast is, uh, to create something that, that can be duplicated, uh, that I can pass along to others and put them in position to continue to strive, uh, and be successful far beyond the stretch of the current real estate model. So back up a little bit to the traditional real estate, you know, cycle of, of a, a real estate agent. Um, and in actually let me back up for a second. One of the reasons that I'm really passionate about this. Um, just to kind of get out the, on the get go. I had an epiphany, you know, a few months back where I was sitting at open house and I w I didn't really have anybody come through and I was sitting there wondering, you know, I'm 37 years old right now. Is this something that I'm going to have to do when I am 60 years old?

Not, not that I want to, but then I'm going to have to do. And that really scared me. Um, so, you know, I, I started thinking a little bit more about, okay, so what happens if as a real estate agent right now, if I don't have anything in the hopper or you know, anything in escrow or what's in escrow, once that closes, as soon as I stop, I'm done. I'm done with any income that's coming in. And so that, that also scared me. So I needed to figure out a way to where I could go ahead and build additional revenue streams and treat my business like a business. And I'll, I'll get to that in a few minutes about, um, what also got me thinking on, on that level. But right now we're sitting here with a natural progression of a real estate agent. Okay. You'll get your license, you come in, you're likely joining a team or you have a mentor or trainer or something, and then maybe you become that trainer.
