229 – Our third to the last episode! In this installment of Downers, we answer listeners' emails and hear about Kate's big vacation! Kate's in quarantine, in Hong Kong, and has much to report about it. Also, along the way, we learn all about Jack's sofa grandfather (#sofagrandfather). Finally a look back: Jack's Composting Bin. For people who are just listening to Downers for the first time, Downers is a podcast about sadness and sometimes Korean food!

228 – As Kate and Hao pack up parts of, or all of, their lives in preparation for the next month of their lives, we check in with them to see how they pack and what they pack. Along the way, they hit on big-issue topics like wet clothes and ransom.

As a brief aside, many of you who read the episode descriptions over these past four years may think that they are written by one of the hosts; but, in fact, they are written by me, Loam Quigley. I haven't always written podcast episode descriptions—no, I started my life as a street food vendor, selling seasoned slices of agave on the streets of Hyderabad. When dial-up internet became commonplace, I joined an internet forum of likeminded people, who were interested in writing pithy, concise descriptions of audio files. We didn't know it yet, but we were all honing our skills for the rise of podcasting, which would eventually take over our lives and rend our friendships apart. With Downers coming to an end, I'm not sure where the winds will take me next. The Summer Olympics is ending in Tokyo this week. Most athletes will go home, but some, a select few, will fall in love with the city and stay behind to forge new lives and loves. That community of expats will need well-traveled guides to aid them: someone to clean the house, someone to make spiced agave nectar. Someone to describe their podcast episodes. In the meantime, I bid you farewell, dear reader. I have trained a blockchain-based artificial intelligence agent on all 228 of my episode descriptions, and it will be taking over my duties. I hope we will meet again on some other RSS feed some other day. It's been a pleasure to serve you. My name is Loam Quigley, and I love Wednesdays and midnights.

227 – With the U.S. government wholeheartedly endorsing the concept of unidentified flying objects, we thought it would be GREAT (content-wise) to, once again, turn our attention to these mysterious objects in the sky. Are they visitors from a distant civilization, and why haven't we tried shooting a missile at them? Then, in the second half, we talk about thought-terminating clichés (Lies of the devil, Now is not the time) and how they might lead to sudden divorce. Also, at the end, a Special Announcement about the future of Downers.

Back in the heyday of the internet, there was only one place you could go to get answers like these — Yahoo! Answers. On this episode, we hop into the wayback machine and sincerely answer these questions, long after they've been 404'd from the internet. Also: The Sims! Holes!

Well, you might have APHANTASIA, the topic of this week's episode. Aphantasia is the inability to voluntarily create mental images in one's mind, and it's not to be confused with Mort Garson's seminal album PLANTASIA. 222 – Way back in the episode #000000000001, Hao and Jack (with Kate relegated to a feature segment) delved into PARAMETERS, as we figured out what the podcast should be back when we had no idea what the show would be like—as opposed to now, when we have a really strong conception of what the show should be like. It's really important to know the parameters of something when you start doing something. This time around, Hao and Jack (with Kate relegated to her cool, busy life) ask: What's the podcast like now? And are we going bald?

216 – Special guest host Ian, formerly contentman, joins Kate and Hao this week to talk about a topic we brought up on a previous episode and completely forgot: separating the art from the artist. As new allegations emerge for artists in almost every type of media, we often have to find a way to recontextualize our fandom in light of awful behavior. Sometimes it's a visceral disgust that just can't be overcome, and other times it's weirder because you've been hearing stories about that person since 2013, when you were doing improv comedy until 2 AM on a weeknight. Also: What's it like in Scandinavia? And: Ian's disastrous movie night.

We here on Downers, being nothing more than old curmudgeons, love the rule. Note: in this episode, we talk, briefly, glancingly, about 9/11, but not in the obnoxious way people sometimes do when they reminisce about 9/11; we also discuss questions we would ask of /r/AskHistorians, and now more of our lives could be like /r/AskHistorians.

186 – If you sell glass bottles, you should be forced to take them back, just like in the old days. This, and other topics, come under the microscope that is this podcast, Downers. Hao's calling in from Vermont, Kate's recording from an active construction site, and we. are. pulling through. My apartment smells like olive oil because I cooked with it tonight. We have a returning guest this week! We check in with Michelle's life, which now includes foods that are both sweet and savory. Check out Michelle's new Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/u/michelleartbear

183 – Jobs: some of them are good, some of them are evil, and some of them shouldn't exist. It's onto the third category that we aim our sights in this episode of Downers, as we devote a special BOOK CLUB to anthropologist David Graeber's critique of useless societal work. What is it about us that leads us to create jobs that might not need to exist, and what does it mean for the common assertion of an efficient market? We don't know! That's why it's a podcast.

176 – Sombra: what kind of pants does she wear? These, and other questions, we gamely tackle in this hour of DOWNERS THE ONLY PODCAST ABOUT SADNESS AND KOREAN FOOD. Jack and Hao read out descriptions of Overwatch characters; Kate tries to figure out which one she would most likely "main," which is a gaming term for devoting most of your time to playing one character for the purposes of getting a higher rank in competitive play. But we mostly end up talking about gender representation in video games, and the ethics of a cartoon video game resorting to visual stereotypes.

175 – Jack has never read Bill Watterson's CALVIN AND HOBBES, if you can believe it, so, in this episode, we tie him down and subject him to some Content from the Past™. 132 – As corporate interests and so-called "influencers" have co-opted Burning Man, a once-idealistic experiment in constructing a vast, temporary city over the course of nine days, to their own gains, we here at Downers can't help but shake our heads and wonder – can we do it better? After all, city planning and dystopic utopias are our bread and butter. In this episode, an alternative gathering event is constructed IN THE CLOUDS, and we call it Downers Meat Substitute Effigy.

We have covered similar ground previously when we talked about apocalypses (twice) but this time we tackle something more realistic: What if you woke up one day and couldn't be who you currently are any more? This premise was very unclear and we didn't do a great job getting on the same page and now you have to listen to the end result. You gotta keep making content!!!

Plugs this week: Night in the Woods (Jack), Tooth and Nail (Hao), and Overwatch (Kate).

EPISODE 20

This episode is our return to form. We dedicate this entire hour to KOREAN FOOD, a small but nonetheless important part of this podcast's premise we've long ignored. A handful of Korean restaurants are reviewed and then assigned white cabbage leaves. In Mail Corner we pore over news of Beatrice and corners. We also talk about cartography, extensively.

EPISODE 19

In this episode we abandon the traditional format of the show to play a mini-tabletop RPG called MECHANICAL ORYX (by one Grant Howitt), winner of the 2017 200-Word RPG Challenge. Join Oxy (Kate) and Gilgamesh (Jack; no relation to the actual Gilgamesh) and Omniscient Impartial Narrator (Hao) as they journey through the ruins of a once-great Earth.

This episode of Downers is brought to you by random.org. Warning: This episode contains a light amount of body-shaming humor, but it is done in character and the emotional reactions it provokes are both sincere and honest. Also, at one point Kate reference-snipes Beyonce's Lemonade; it's great and it's my fault I didn't pick up on it.

In this action-packed episode we take a trip down memory lane in Update Corner, where we revisit hashtag dad couplets and Fermi's paradox. Then we spent the rest of the hour tackling the heady controversial world of FAKE NEWS. What is fake news? Where does it come from? Does it necessarily involve babies? These are but just a few of the questions we never get around to answering.

Jack and Hao structure an episode around, like, a half-pun? We talk Neutral Milk Hotel and tell stories about ... mold ... from our lives. At the end we pitch ideas for a THEME SONG.

Editor's Note: when we come back from the break we make a reference to talk of suicide in Act I. We did in fact talk about 13 Reasons Why in the original recording, that Netflix show about suicide, but neither one of us could come up with the correct title of that show so Hao cut all of it out. Hao, for the record, hates the show.
