On this show, we talk all about Decaffeinated Coffee. This is a subject which is often met with derision in the world of coffee for a variety of reasons - because why drink coffee when it doesn't have caffeine, because decaf is gross, etc.
We discover that much of the reason we rarely drink Decaf - which can be quite delicious - is that most of the time quality decaf is limited to very few coffees. We want to explore the wondrous taste of coffee and all it has to offer, and much of the time the coffee we personally enjoy just isn't available in decaf form. That is until now. Our guest on this show is Andy Liu, founder and creator of Decafino, a product that can completely decaffeinate any cup of brewed coffee in minutes.

Being people who are passionate about the craft of coffee, we're naturally going to be hand brewing quite frequently. But the question stands, why should you (perhaps an average drinker of coffee at home) brew your coffee by hand?

In this episode, we attempt to address the myth that you don't want to brew with water that is too hot - that you can 'burn' your coffee. In order to test the water temperature myth, we also brew coffee at a lower temp so we can share just how important a high water temperature is in your brew.
We brew 3 V60s, one at 190F, one at 200F, and one at ~210F (just off boiling). Is brewing just off boiling going to ruin your brew?
Will it be better/worse? On the flip side, what happens when you brew below 200?

Coffee is HUGE - it's bigger throughout the world than you can really imagine, even given that you can find it on every single corner. All of our individual experiences with coffee is through single cups. Just a bit of beans at a time, consuming a pound or two here and there. In this episode we explore one of the critical roles in getting coffee to you...
We visit The Green Room, a massive coffee storage warehouse in Auburn Washington - in this space (which turns out to be half the size of an Ikea, approx), the folks at The Green Room climate control store around 100k bags of green coffee at any given time (translating to some 10-15 million pounds). This is an important waypoint between import of coffee and the roaster, a place for coffee to stay safe, secure, and stable, before it's final destination.
On the show we take you on a tour, and try to give you an impression of this important step in the coffee supply chain.

Espresso is one of those coffee brewing methods which looks awesome, and is delicious, but turns out to be a crazy amount of effort. Most of the time, we'll just go to a cafe to get our espresso, because the coffee will be freshest, and the trained baristas will prepare it the best. But on the other hand, there are ways to make pretty darn good espresso drinks at home - and that is one of the most satisfying feelings...
I made an error in my price statement of the Barista Touch during the show - it's actually $1200, not $2100 - making it an incredibly good deal.

One standard rule when it comes to brewing pour over coffee is to let it bloom for 30 seconds. The bloom is the releasing of gasses at the beginning of the brew.
Typically you would add 1:1 or 2:1 water to grounds, let the gasses release for 30-45 seconds, and then brew with the rest of your water.
Well a happy accident one day revealed a delicious result by significantly extending the brew...
So on this show, Jesse and I compare a 4 minute bloom and 30 second bloom.
Is there a difference? Find out...

Though hand-brewing coffee is an amazing (and for us on the show here preferred) way of making our coffee, most people prefer and auto drip machine for ease of use and amount of brew made. In this show, Jesse and I tackle the question 'is a single origin coffee better than a blend?' With the surge in 'single origin' popularity, there's this impression with many that blends are inferior. We want to help you understand that there's a place in your mug for both, and both can bring fantastic experiences. Oh, this show is also the debut of Coffee Lovers Radio Opera.... maybe? We all run into a bad brew here and there - part of the joy of coffee is in the exploration of it, and that means from time to time you will make a brew that isn't right, and sometimes even downright bad. What you do next is important - how do you know that it is bad, and what does that mean? what questions do you ask? How do you do the right thing so that your next brew is better? We tackle all these ideas in this week's show. Hosts: Joseph Robertson - Coffee Lovers Magazine - http://www.coffeeloversmag.com Jesse Nelson - Conduit Coffee - http://www.conduitcoffee.com

The Complexity of Coffee, Part 3 of 3. In this episode, Joseph and Jesse are rejoined by Shawn ‘Coffeesmith’ Leib, as we discuss the complexity of coffee in itself, and as it compares to wine, in the final stage of production - the brewing and drinking of coffee. This show was recorded in December 2015, and features some coffee which is no longer available (we also bring up some references which will sound out of place). The Complexity of Coffee, Part 2 of 3 - Jesse and I continue our exploration on coffee complexity. Last episode we explored the complex nature of green coffee, from the simple aroma to everything involved in the production of coffee, getting it to the roaster. This series will be interspersed, as we produce them, amongst other episodes. You will have noticed a little bit of a gap between this show and the last one - the holidays took us for a bit of a spin. We are also working on a new series for next year, which I won’t spoil. In support of The Aeropress Down event - a local Aeropress brewing competition happening in Seattle at Morsel & Bean in Ballard on Nov 5th - we are sharing our favorite Aeropress recipes. I've included a short little bonus at the beginning of the show - this past week (after we recorded the show) I had the pleasure of interviewing Alan Adler, inventor of the Aeropress. He will be on the cover of the next issue of Coffee Lovers Magazine. Our conversation lead me to reconsider my approach with the Aeropress, and now I am experimenting with lower water temperature, finer grind, and shorter brew times. The recipe we use still produces a very fine cup of coffee - however this illustrates the extreme diversity of options available in brewing with the Aeropress. Today we are joined by Neil Oney, Director of Coffee for Cloud City Coffee and El Diablo in Seattle - he is a wonderful person, and very knowledgable and skilled in the tasting of coffee. Cupping is a topic we have touched on a number of times - it is a tool we use frequently for discovery in coffee. We felt it important to dig in and talk about this process specifically. This show we perhaps travel a bit down some tangents, and maybe get a little into the weeds - I encourage you, if you have any interest in tasting coffee, to listen through to the end. There are some real gems here. As always the show is supported by Coffee Lovers Magazine and Conduit Coffee. On the show this week, its hosts Joseph Robertson and Jesse Nelson with friend and guest, Francis. One ever present challenge in coffee is the drive and the search to reproduce experiences that we have had in the past. Following the Megacupping at Conduit after SCAA, we were interested in trying to reproduce a particular experience found in one of the cups. A natural Geisha, which gave the flavors and aromas of sweet basil. In an effort to recreate that experience, we experiment with a different French Press method in a new show style - a brew along! So join us on the show this week as we brew this new style of French Press, going over the steps, and describing our experience. This style of French Press method is taken from Tim Wendelboe, and the steps can be found here: https://timwendelboe.no/resources/brewing-guide/french-press/ We would love to hear your thoughts on the show - theshow @ coffeeloversradio.com Hosts: Joseph Robertson - Coffee Lovers Magazine - http://www.coffeeloversmag.com Jesse Nelson - Conduit Coffee - http://www.conduitcoffee.com Guest: Francis!

On this week's episode, Jesse and I sit down to dig in and explore some ideas around what drives people's desires and choices in their coffee. This conversation specifically came about after musing over the popularity of single serving pod machines. We also both work in positions where we try to open the doors of the world of coffee to people, and that means finding ways in which we can help others be more open to trying new things. It's all about desire and routine - and what you can do to influence your own experiences for the better. Oh, and there's a bit on our April Fool's shenanigans. This week we sat down with Val and Matt Quest, of Quest Coffee. This couple is on a mission to help the underrepresented small coffee farmers around the world. They start with one farmer, on one farm in Brazil - import the coffee themselves, sort it by their own hands, roast it through Conduit Coffee, and then sell it themselves. This is probably the purest form of direct trade you can find, and demonstrates the rapidly evolving coffee industry where anyone can step up and play a major role in the entire chain. On the day of the show, we cupped three roast versions of the single origin Mundanova that Quest Coffee is importing from this farm - we hear about their story, the story of the farmer, and talk a bit about the coffee itself. Following the publication of Coffee Lovers Magazine Issue 26 (http://www.coffeeloversmag.com/jan2015) - where we feature an interview with Mokhtar Alkhanshali (Mocha Mill Coffee - http://www.mochamill.com) - we decided to explore the nature of global politics and their effect on coffee production. Mostly though, we wanted to demonstrate, through a few different examples, why you should care about where your coffee comes from and what it means to other people. It's easy to become disassociated in terms of the coffee we drink simply because on our end it's "just a drink," while on the other end it can be an entire culture's livelihood. So sit back and explore some fascinating - if serious - aspects of the world of coffee. This episode of Coffee Lovers Radio is a bit of a special episode - we by happenstance debut the 'Coffee Lovers Test Kitchen,' following up on a test we did just prior to the show. The notion that you should grind your coffee right before brewing is one which is commonly accepted - however, no one can tell you exactly why, or what happens if you grind an hour, a day, or a week in advance. Does the coffee really go bad? How much are you missing out by grinding in advance? Or, did we find contrary evidence to suggest that you can you save yourself the trouble of grinding right before brewing? Find out on this special episode... Mentioned on this episode is our very first 'Coffee Lovers Test Kitchen' test, the storage test, which we conducted last year. We had the esteemed pleasure to have Cortney Kern - Barista Maniac - as our guest on this show. Cortney has been working up a storm in the specialty coffee field with impeccable coffee tasting and descriptive skills. Following his work at Coffeefest St Louis earlier this year, Cortney was invited to Coffeefest Portland, where he mentored judges for the America's Best Espresso competition (and himself judged as well). We chatted about his experiences, his skills tasting coffee, and other delightful coffee things. In a spout of nostalgia, and after a week of pondering how everyone's perception of coffee is heavily influenced by parents, media, and friends, throughout our lives (even if we don't drink coffee), we spent the day talking about our past, and how we came into coffee. http://www.coffeeloversmag.com http://thaihighcompanies.com/ I took a trip to the mountains, north of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand to explore coffee farming with Ray Beurger - owner of Thai High Coffee Companies. After bumping around muddy mountain roads, standing in breathtaking thunderous valleys, we decided to have a chat in the truck on the way back to Chiang Mai. See my story on exploring Thailand Coffee in this month's Coffee Lovers Magazine - http://www.coffeeloversmag.com

We enjoyed the last of a bottle of Macallan 12, chatted about things that go well with coffee, and listened to The Coffeesmith serenade us with tales of his adventure through coffee.
