When we think about the 1936 Olympics, the first memory for many black Americans is Jessie Owens winning four gold medals in Berlin and embarrassing Nazi Germany and Adolph Hitler, and destroying their master race theory. But what Deborah Riley Draper does as co-author of the new book OLYMPIC PRIDE, AMERICAN PREJUDICE, is tell the story of all 18 African Americans whom competed in the 1936 Olympics. This contingent of black athletes won 14 medals including 8 gold, but save for Jessie Owens, were largely unheralded. The book is based on her 2016 documentary of the same name that she wrote, directed and produced.
