Mike Taylor is a Prompt Engineer, Educator, CEO and Co-Founder of Vexpower. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss the evolving landscape of search.
Is it worth ranking things anymore? For users to decide on the best ones? This means spending more time doing research before arriving at wisdom. Social media platforms don't focus on rankings. Chatbots don't focus on rankings. Why should search engines?
Is it worth ranking results anymore?
The expectations of search results have changed. They've changed to users expecting answers to their queries, not results.
The use cases of search have fuelled this change. Someone searching for something whilst driving isn't really interested in scrolling through a list of sites to find the answer to their question. They want the answer. They expect the answer.
AI chatbots provide answers. These platforms seem to be growing in popularity and are further fuelling the expectations that users have of search platforms.
The way users search is also changing. Prompting for answers (not results) is becoming the norm. If one isn't satisfied with the answer they seek, they optimise their prompts and/or use a different platform. The collective intelligence of searchers has grown. So why should search platforms rank results rather than provide a satisfactory answer? THE satisfactory answer?

Cameron Gibbs is an Ontologist and a Knowledge Graph Engineer. He joins me to discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to have a conversation about the success metrics Knowledge Engineers consider when engineering.
A knowledge graph helps with the organisation of data, making it simpler and easier to access its information. When an Engineer builds a Knowledge Graph, what metrics do they consider?
This question intrigued me and led me to invite Cameron on the podcast to discuss.
In our conversation, Cameron and I talk about the evolution of search - from mere result lists to delivering precise answers at lightning speed.
As search continues to evolve, businesses must stay agile and adapt to changing user behaviours. There is a personalised nature of search experiences, which is fuelling searchers to use social media platforms for discoverability. Search visibility is going to further expand. So what metrics should businesses be considering to determine how much search visibility they have gained because of their inclusion in knowledge graphs?
Cameron Gibbs, Knowledge Graph Engineer, joins me to discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Paulo Andraus is a Lead Tech SEO Manager with over 15 years experience. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss How SEOs Can Better Work with Google Search.
Paulo and I discuss the evolving landscape of SEO and its relationship with Google. A common mistake some SEOs make is trying to manipulate Google. This is often due to the pressure of attaining quick results.
In SEO, there's a necessity to have a marketing mindset, putting business goals ahead of SEO best practices.

Delve into the realm of knowledge graphs, reasoning, and semantic search with a Knowledge Graph Engineer, Valerio Cocchi.
We explore the intricacies of semantic search and the hurdles in implementing it effectively. Machines have impressive data processing capabilities. However, there is still the need to integrate reasoning with probabilistic approaches for more nuanced understanding.
We also discuss how semantic search has the potential to revolutionize information retrieval by boosting productivity, but we note the necessity for user-friendly tools to drive widespread adoption.

Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia. When used by marketers (SEOs), there is a tendency to attempt to use it as a marketing platform - a big no-no in the Wikipedia community.
Creating a Wikipedia page for your brand is not impossible. However, you need to understand what the community is looking for, as well as the correct, acceptable way of having an entry accepted.

Matthias Sesboüé is a 3rd year PhD Student who's designing a Knowledge Graph based search engine for traceparts.com. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss what it'll look like to design a search engine today.
Google's web index is powerful. Google's web index is humongous. Google's web index is out of date.
It's based on an information-seeking system. The web is crawled, for information to be sought-after. Compare this to Google Business Profile, which has an inbuilt information retrieval system, where businesses provide their information.
Social Media platforms also have an inbuilt information retrieval system. Users willingly provide their details, which can be, and is, searched for. One could say these platforms have a more up-to-date search engine, albeit, less extensive than Google's.
If Big Tech are to stay the most relevant to their users, they must have new ways of thinking in place. They must have the newest, brightest minds, researching and utilising new technologies to make search a better product. This is why they have a strong academia presence.
If one were to design a search engine today, what new technologies would it use? Are these technologies what established search engines are incorporating into their products? Matthias Sesboüé, a 3rd year PhD Student, joins me to discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Alan Morrison is a Freelance Advisor, Writer, Speaker and Podcaster. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss the role of knowledge graphs for FAIR DTs.
Organising the world's information is FAIR. It requires a Digital Twin (DT) of the real world. An SEO could consider a DT an entity.
If entities are essentially people, places and things, and the latter two were the starting points of the world's information being transposed into digital, one could suggest that people are the latest phase in the quest to organise the world's information, having information as a FAIR DT.
If search is the delivery product for a FAIR DT, what role does a knowledge graph play in organising the world's information?

Thomas Mitrevski is the Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we talk about the influence tech giants have on search.
Tech giants have big bets on their search systems. They all build their knowledge graphs to meet and exceed the expectations of their users.
The knowledge tech giants have generates the wisdom they require to serve their users with the knowledge they seek when they search. Users expect tech giants to have this wisdom and to be able to deliver them knowledge.
To deliver knowledge, wisdom is required in two folds: knowing users; knowing entities. How is this achieved, maintained and continually updated?

The ranking signals Google considers are well publicised. These tend to be online signals.
Google's goals are to replicate what's happening in the real world. If this is the case, they couldn't just rely on online signals. They have to consider real-world, offline, data into their algorithms, or alongside their algorithm - or perhaps, as a separate set of algorithms.

Pedro Dias is an SEO Consultant, ex-Googler and Founder of Visively. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss Search Engines of Tomorrow.
The one thing search engines, social media platforms and AI chatbots have in common is the user. They acquire the same users. They share the same users. They serve the same users.
Their algorithms, as such, are engineered to cater to the same users.
Search engines, social media platforms, AI-bots, are influenced by each other to meet, exceed and anticipate the expectations of the same user-base.
As marketers, as businesses, our audience are a subset of the users of these platforms. They all have a search-and-deliver function for their users, which is core to their business.
Gathering insights into the influential changes these platforms are making (for their users) will shed light into the way we attract an audience from (and on) these platforms.

Ravi Bajracharya is a Knowledge Graph Engineer at Datum.bio. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss why businesses build their knowledge graphs.
In a world where users spend more time searching on the websites of brands they love, the need to satisfy their queries becomes a high priority for businesses.
Internal search on websites is still in its infancy. This, however, is certain to change. It is only a matter of time.
So, how can queries be satisfied? With the use and development of knowledge graphs.
Understanding how your website satisfies internal queries will shed a light on how Google is seeking to do so with their knowledge base, for their users - who are, in-part, the audience you seek.
Why are businesses building their knowledge graphs? Is having one essential or a nice-to-have? At what point does a business need a knowledge graph? Deevo Tindall is the CEO (Chief Experience Officer) at Fusion Creative Branding. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss branding and search.
Why does Google favour popular brands in their organic search results? Perhaps they consider the emotional connection brands have with their customers. Perhaps they understand the storytelling brand focus on to connect with their audience. Perhaps SEOs can learn a thing or two from the experts behind the brands. Brand Specialists, perhaps, may have a unique way of understanding organic search to the way SEOs do.

Kaspar Szymanski is an SEO Consultant and Co-Founder of SearchBrothers, as well as an ex-Googler. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss search quality.
When it comes to search results, users expect relevance and accuracy. They want the search engine to understand their query and provide them with the most relevant and accurate information.
In addition to speed, relevance, and accuracy, users also value a clean and user-friendly interface.
For Google to meet user expectations, they must continuously evolve to better understand user intent and deliver high-quality results.
If a brand is meeting users' expectations, is it reasonable to say Google will organically recommend it to its users? Prominently? Consistently? Kerstin Reichert is the Head of Marketing at SeedLegals. She joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss scaling up SEO in the legal space.
It takes more than SEOs to make SEO a success. Client-side SEOs know this very well, indeed. Client-side SEOs in the legal and finance space possibly know this the best. Why? Because carrying out SEO in these industries requires cooperation from in-house expertise.
If content is (still) king and SEOs in the legal space know SEO and not legalise, they must rely on the expertise of Legal professionals to create the content that would be king. Consistently. This, surely, requires more than a one-off collaboration between SEO and Legal.
This, surely, requires the business's 'ways of working' to consider SEO. This, surely, requires the business to realise, at a cultural level, that it takes more than SEOs to make SEO a success. This, in the Legal space...?

Barry Adams is an independent SEO Consultant for news publishers. He is the Founder of Polemic Digital, a specialist SEO consultancy for news publishers. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss keyword research for news publishers.
News publishing is fast-paced. It's an industry where content optimisation needs to be perfect before publication. You don't get a second chance to optimise a piece of content, post-launch.
To maximise on your traffic potential, content optimisation requires alignment with the various teams, pre-launch. There are no do-overs if you miss the current news cycle. You simply need better preparation for the next one.
How do SEOs contend with this preparation when it comes to keyword research? How far ahead does an SEO need to make adequate preparations? Is it even worth doing keyword research - in the traditional sense...? Barry Adams and I discuss on episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Client-side SEO is very different to agency-side SEO. Client-side, you're marketing for the business, with SEO. Agency-side, you're selling SEO - either as a service, a product, or both!
If you've carried out SEO at both sides, you're aware there are differences between the two. The buy-in is different. The management is different. The implementation is different.

Gus Pelogia is the SEO Product Manager at Indeed. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss the reality of marketing with SEO.
How valuable is an SEO strategy when it will not be executed?
The end-goal of SEO isn't to do 'good SEO'. It's to improve a business's website so it generates revenue. An SEO strategy, beautified with slides, doesn't drive this goal forward if it will not be realised by the business.
Why should non-SEOs at a business give a damn about SEO when they are not SEOs? This is a complex question to solve because 'non-SEOs' - those that have the ability to impact the business's website's organic performance - are literally every single person that has a touch-point with the website.
The reality of marketing with the SEO channel is you MUST improve the internal operations - with a discipline that is still foreign to non-practitioners. And as improvement has no end, this internal goal is forever. Gus Pelogia, a client-side SEO, and I, discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Chris Spann is the Senior Technical SEO at Lumar (formerly Deepcrawl). He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss communicating technical challenges to business leadership.
SEOs have a habit of 'speaking SEO' to business leadership. The result of this is an unwillingness, from business leaders, to be familiar with the channel. You can sympathise, can't you...?
Why spend precious time learning to comprehend something that's seemingly so minute to the business, especially when there are other options (channels) - that are easier to grasp?
If the option is to make a decision with the familiar, or to make one with the unfamiliar, surely the route via the known, known is better than the unknown? Yet, to key decision-makers, we often speak in SEO terms and expect them to be onside with the unfamiliar - regardless of the frustrations they experience.
Surely, there's a better way. Surely, we can minimise (or remove) the frustrations? Surely, when it comes to communicating with key decision-makers, there's an alternative to 'speaking SEO'. On this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs), Chris Spann and I discuss some of the more effective ways of communicating technical challenges to business leaders.

David Iwanow is an SEO professional of 17+ years. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss the value of rankings.
Over the years, we've seen major changes in rankings. Universal results, Position-0, Knowledge Panels, all changed the way rankings are valued.
Some SEOs stick with valuing each ranking position, focusing on 1-3. Some consider zones, instead. Others only use GSC for 'true' CTRs.
There's no denying SGE will impact rankings once more. If the SERP changes we're going to see will be the biggest in the history of search, rankings - and the way they're valued - will be revolutionised.
What changes should we be preparing to make on our rankings reports? Will there be a 'top spot' in the SERPs when Google releases SGE? How will ranking tools adapt to these upcoming SERP changes? David Iwanow and I discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Organic Search is acquisition-based. However, it doesn't have to be used only as a reactive channel.
The better you have SEO integrated with other areas of your business, the more you'll be able to influence your target audience to search for your brand, through your various marketing activities. You can grow the search demand of your brand - the way you want it searched for.
You're already marketing your brand. To increase the search for it, you simply need an adjustment to have search better synergized with traditional marketing activities.

It takes more than SEOs to make SEO a success. When you're an in-house SEO, you get to see, first-hand, why this is a true statement.
Along with consulting business leadership to help them make decisions that will affect SEO performance, you're also galvanising heads of departments to have them 'on-side' with SEO. Operationally, you're also influencing individuals to give a damn about SEO when they don't give a damn about SEO.
On this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs), Sophie Brannon shares her experience of what it's like being an SEO, in-house.

Jane Hunt is the Founder & CEO of JBH, a Digital PR and SEO agency for consumer brands. She joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss what influences journalists to cover a story.
Journalists are interested in stories. Brands, SEOs and PRs are interested in pitching stories as part of their marketing campaigns.
There is never a guarantee a story will take off, let alone be picked up by Journalists. Yet some do. Yet sone are.
If the million dollar question is "why do some stories get picked up and others don't?", the billion dollar question is "what can brands, SEOs and PRs do to influence Journalists to cover a story?" Heck, what can they do to get a response from Journalists in the first place? Jane Hunt and I discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Every website, every publisher knows what a link is these days. They know when a Digital PR person is seeking to acquire a backlink to a specific page, for specific (SEO benefit) reasons.
So why do publishers still give a link these days? What influences them to WANT to link to a specific page, as requested? What motivates a publisher to even respond to a Digital PR in the first place? Jo O'Reilly and I discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Jake Gauntley is the Senior SEO Account Director at Reprise Digital UK. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss E-E-A-T.
Marketers relate E-E-A-T to SEO. However, it isn't related to just SEO. It is no coincidence that Google added the extra 'E' as AI came into the public consciousness.
The extra 'E' should serve as a reminder that we (SEOs) optimise websites for users - real human beings who want their search satisfied with human-lived experiences.
From a certain point of view, you could say E-E-A-T acts as a guide (with reward systems behind it) for businesses to remain connected with people in a digital ecosystem that will rapidly become consumed by artificial intelligence. Ash Liddell is an SEO Content Strategist. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) where we discuss what TikTok has to do with SEO.
TikTok is at the centre of pop culture. As well as being the fastest growing social platform, it has already amassed its own lexicon - FilmTok, BookTok, and yes, SearchTok. Chances are your audience are on TikTok - as are your competitors.
Have you noticed the platform influences its users to search? It's a subtle CTA but they suggest search terms in every video watched. It is only a matter of time before SEOTok takes off.
Why does this matter?
It matters because TikTok is more than a Social platform. It is also a Search platform - one that's a legit threat to Google Search, perhaps...
Why should SEOs - and wider marketing teams - take TikTok, as a search engine, seriously? Ash Liddell and I discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Hannah Smith is a Creative Content Consultant and Director at Worderist. She joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss the common misconceptions about Digital PR performance.
Marketers really should avoid setting goals like: Every Digital PR piece should generate a minimum of 10 pieces of linked coverage.
There are widespread misconceptions about how individual Digital PR pieces actually perform, which has led to unrealistic goals like the one above being set. In order to try to correct this, Hannah Smith has collated data from a range of agencies and inhouse teams in order to provide more realistic benchmarks.
Hannah and I will discuss how we got here; her learnings from the study; the pros and cons of "Hero" (or asset-led Digital PR) versus "Reactive" Digital PR; and what more realistic Digital PR goals might look like in this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Ash Nallawalla is an Enterprise Senior SEO Specialist. He joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss the topic of 'Why Do You Deserve Organic Traffic From Google?'.
The organic channel is so powerful, you receive traffic from it even BEFORE you actively begin to EARN your traffic.
Have you ever pondered if you're deserving of the natural traffic you receive from Google?
As businesses, we almost expect to receive sessions from Google as though we're entitled to them. The cold, hard truth is our users are Google's users. If we want to be recommended by Google (to their audience), we must be deserving of their recommendations. We must earn their trust. We must earn their confidence. Yet, some businesses do not have SEO as an active channel.
When you are not deserving of Google's users, why should they continue to recommend you, and recommend you so highly? This is the topic Ash Nallawalla and I discuss on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Marco Giordano is an SEO Specialist who joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss 'What's Your SEO Process Using Data?'.
Data is a huge area for SEO. It's so huge, some SEOs consider it to be a pillar in itself. Indeed, data is a solution for making the 'right' SEO decisions. But where should this solution fit within the SEO process?
Brands find the 'ways of working with SEO' a challenge. Surely, adding data into the mix only complicates this challenge. Where should SEO data sit? Who is responsible for it? If SEOs, doesn't this mean SEOs are 'marking their own homework'?

Achieving and maintaining success in SEO is highly influenced by your optimisation process. The channel cannot, must not, function in a silo.

SEO is a wide and vast channel. It requires ongoing SEO training for SEOs. Additionally, non-SEOs also require upskilling. This isn't ideal, it's necessary. It's needed. It's required. It's required when you want to improve your SEO. It's required when you want to prevent regression in your SEO. It's required when you want to grow and maintain your online business. John-Paul Drake and I delve into this topic on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs).

Sara Taher is an SEO Consultant and Speaker based in Ontario, Canada. She joins me on this episode of Talks with SEOs (#TwSEOs) to discuss 'Getting Your Business Ready for SEO'.
For many business leaders, SEO is a channel they believe they must invest in. The need to 'tick the box' as a business that invests in SEO overshadows a set of important considerations: is the business ready to incorporate SEO? Is the current infrastructure suitable for SEO? Is there a company-wide commitment to actively manage their SEO?
SEO is a great channel for generating revenue. However, a business has to be readied for the channel. What should a business consider before taking the leap and investing in the SEO channel? Sara and I discuss on this episode.
