Juneteenth, also known as “Emancipation Day” or “Freedom Day”, commemorates the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to spread the word that enslaved African Americans were free, more than two years after the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1980, Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas, and in 2021 Juneteenth was made a federal holiday. Did you know Juneteenth is also celebrated outside the U.S.?
