Shari Corbitt returns to the show to discuss ongoing research into the dangers of chronic long-term use of Marijuana. With the legalization of recreational and medical cannabis, and the positive impact that it can have, some have leaned into chronic or daily use of high concentrate THC. In some cases individuals with high levels of long-term overuse are experiencing a psychotic break from reality, even those who have never had psychosis before. This alarming correlation needs further research, but is already observable in patients. Shari describes how this information is used in her work with patients with chronic pain and long-term medical needs.

Addiction is a problem that has historically been left to law enforcement professionals. Criminal charge diversion is a growing approach to giving individuals struggling with addiction the chance to opt for treatment rather than legal punishment. This has been shown to be effective in reducing recidivism and overdose death.

Thresholds is one of the oldest mental health clinics in Illinois, and Jeff Gilbert & Ann Brekke are Directors of a groundbreaking program that helps those who have been arrested to be given the option of treatment in lieu of receiving a criminal charge. An individual treatment plan is then designed, within a Harm Reduction approach. Learn more about their program at https://www.thresholds.org.

Peter Strong is a psychologist, therapist, and mindfulness coach. He has been doing online mindfulness work for 15 years.

A mindful approach to healing differs from other forms of therapy in that clients are encouraged to focus and meditate ON their negative feelings instead of distracting away from them. Purposeful focus on disturbing thoughts, feelings, or patterns can lead to acceptance and new reactions. You can learn more about Peter's work at www.pdmstrong.wordpress.com.

At the end of the episode there is a brief message about the ethics of online sessions.

The animated film Song of the Sea is super cool. That's good enough reason to talk about it, but it also effectively showcases the effects of complicated grief and loss. And who better to have this conversation with than Podcaster, Pop Culture Expert, and founder of the Core Temp Arts Podcast Network, Karly Beaumont.

Focusing on a dual story that intertwines real life and a fairy tale, this story demonstrates the options of lashing out at others, shutting down, or embracing feelings of loss and beginning the difficult path to healing.

While we'd suggest watching the film, this episode starts out with a quick synopsis of the movie by friend of the show Bri Poe.

The history of how we diagnose psychological issues is long, interesting, and several kinds of messed up. We begin to take that apart today. I was joined for this conversation by Tehya Fencik (TK), creator & host of "For The Love Of History Podcast." As a historian, TK found incredible information about therapeutic communities in the early 1900s.

"The Statistical Manual for Use of Institutions for the Insane" is a text written in 1918 and an early attempt at categorizing mental health disorders. While it never caught on, it represents an experiment in the type of thinking that led to modern diagnostic practice.
