Last week, the Wirangu and Nauo peoples celebrated the Federal Court's recognition of their shared native title rights and interests on the western Eyre Peninsula – ending a 25-year fight for native title recognition.

Justice O'Bryan formally handed the groups an overlapping Consent Determination for native title claims, including Wirangu No.2 Part B, No.3 Part B, Sea Claim No.2 Part B, and Nauo No.3.

In July 2021, the Wirangu and Nauo peoples came together for meditation with the state and federal governments to avoid a native title trial, which would have seen Wirangu and Nauo fighting against each other for exclusive native title recognition. The mediation was successful – Wirangu and Nauo agreed on shared interests in their respective claims.
