Mercy is often understood as a lack of Judgement and in most circumstances that makes total sense. However, when we look at the example of God's mercy for those in Christ is this still the case? It seems to me that when it comes to our choice to follow Christ there is an act of judgement from one party and mercy from another. Pride is always bad!! Right?...
Scripture seems fairly clear that pride is the first step to disgrace. "The proud will be made low, and the lowly in spirit will be brought up", seems cut and dry to me. However, there seems to be a use of pride that is not only permissible but encouraged. Paul tells the Roman church that he has pride in his work, and the question that leads me to ask is this... It appears that the first 9 chapters of Paul's letter to the Romans sets the foundation for theology and worldview. Many people get turned off by Christianity because of the common notion that God sends people to hell, but is that really the case? Is God this moral monster who throws people into the pits of fire against their will? Or have we misunderstood this fundamental principle of eternity? Another notion that turns people away from God is the notion that Faith requires you to abandon Logic and Reason. Many people, believers included, have spread this narrative that Faith is believing without evidence, that's where we get the phrase "blind faith". Paul is a perfect example of why evidence, logic, and reason and foundational to our faith and he exemplifies this in his letter to the Roman people.

If you have been reading the bible for some time you are bound to face criticism of the Bible's reliability. There have been many skeptics, non-believers, and textual critics that try to cast doubt on the Gospel's reliability. The Gospel of Christ teaches that we will be hated, persecuted, and face suffering for our allegiance to Jesus Christ. How then do we get the Prosperity Gospel? One of the most easily missed archetypes in the Torah is the similarities between the Patriarchs and their descendants. The narratives of Abraham for example foreshadow the actions of the Israelites in Egypt. Oddly enough Adam's descendants carry out his actions to this day (sin). Paul is reminding the Roman church about this human truth in his effort to guide them towards trust in Jesus and not the Law. Without Jesus can there be life? Can we live to indulge our flesh and still be saved? These questions are in need of answers, especially for the Roman Church.

I'm willing to bet money that you have been told that Noah's Flood covered the entire globe! That's obviously true, right? If you were like me I was confused and unsure what to believe when I was told that scientific evidence implies that a Global Flood was impossible. We live in the freest most prosperous generation in human history and we are still enslaved. How can this be? We have prioritized individual freedom to its most extreme points, and by doing this we have obtained the wrong freedom. Culture leads us to believe that true freedom means we are to live our lives without restriction or judgement, unfortunately, we have extended these parameters to God as well. I submit to you that we have been searching for the wrong freedom, a freedom that never sets you free. The right freedom can only be found in God's perfect moral law, and in the word become flesh Jesus Christ.

Remember that time Jesus called a woman a dog? Throughout the Bible, some things can confuse you and sometimes test your faith. I can understand how reading about Jesus calling a woman a dog can be problematic but is our understanding of this interaction correct? Do we really have value? In the eyes of God of course! But what about for other people? Do we have inherent value or are we worthless? The parable of The Pearl of Great Value actually gives us insight to God's view on our worth. Although we sin and fall short we are still created in Gods Image. This truth gives us a duty we may not be aware of. Because we hold value we have the obligation to treat others with love even at our own expense. With this parable Jesus challenges our comfort and calls us to a higher standard.

Jude is one of those books that can easily be overlooked. It's short, rather unknown, and just so happens to be right before Revelations. To my surprise this Scripture Study on the book of Jude has been the most insightful study I have done in a very long time. Although this book is short it does NOT lack substance. Jesus was not a novice to the age old art of roasting. The Good Samaritan is good right? Here is a shocker... In the eyes of Jesus' original audience Samaritans were never good, and evil at best. Have we accidentally turned this originally disquieting parable into a feel good story? Many of us ask "How can I hear God?" But, how can we expect to hear God if we don't know what God sounds like? In 1 Samuel 3 we come across an interesting story where God is calling out to Samuel, but Samuel has no idea who is calling his name! Throughout this passage we find interesting details that can get missed in certain translations of the Bible.
