A Slick Talk listener wanted to know about the Gen 3 Prius, noting concern about EGR issues that lead to a head gasket replacement being necessary, and if our samples could indicate if something needed to be done. If there's a problem with the head gasket, coolant contamination is a telltale sign in our testing. Blackstone Joe went to the data to see how many instances of coolant there are in the 2ZR-FXE samples we've tested, and the data might surprise you!

Communication is the name of the game here at Blackstone Labs. Oil analysis is a complicated topic, and it's natural for customers to have questions or misunderstandings about what's expected in an oil report. In this instance, a question regarding a sample's viscosity becomes a valuable teaching moment.

The pandemic, inflation, and shortages haven't made maintenance easy over the past three years. Customers can't find their usual oil or their usual choice of filter in some cases. This week Blackstone Joe digs into a few situations where oil analysis can help customers sleep easier at night when trying to make do with their engines. Plus, Joe answers a question from friend of the pod, Crazy Dave, about Unit IDs on Blackstone Labs reports.

Bonus: Blackstone Joe's recipe for the Greatest Chicken Salad In the World - recipe below

4-6 chicken thighs, boneless/skinless, marinaded in italian salad dressing and grilled over charcoal (or propane if you must, but c'mon)

2 poblano peppers, charred and cleaned before dicing

1 jalapeno, diced (can substitute pickles if you don't want spice)

1/2 red onion, diced

Juice of one 1 lemon, add zest if desired

Add mayonnaise to desired consistency

Finish with fresh chopped dill (as much as you like)

Season with salt and pepper (ideally Crazy Jane's Hamburger seasoning, if you can find it)

We know our customers are interested in learning all they can about the data, but what about the analyst themselves? Hard-hitting questions like, "Are you a cat or dog person," "coffee or tea," "what superpowers did you acquire during quarantine," the list goes on. Blackstone Joe sat down with senior analyst Miranda Beck to break down these very same questions, and much, much more. After getting to know Miranda, we wrap things up with a breakdown of an aircraft sample where the oil held crucial evidence of a cylinder-area problem, and we also break down a sample where the container may have skewed the results, finally wrapping things up with tales of oil analysis circa 1966. Great talk!

The eye test for oil is good for many things, but determining the exact viscosity, additive package, and severity of contamination is a bridge too far even for the far-sighted among us. The Blackstone Labs standard analysis will break down the viscosity range the oil falls in, additive elements, and the presence of contaminants such as fuel or coolant. Episode 84 is all about how you'll be better equipped in finding out -- whose oil is this anyway?

What was it that Matthew McConaughey said about looking back to move forward? Well, Blackstone Joe must have watched one too many of those commercials, because the start of 2023 finds our host looking back on 2022, fondly of course, with a few different highlights in mind. First, we revisit a past episode and dig a little deeper into low and no-oil situations (2:18).  Next, Blackstone Joe answers Slick Talk's very first caller question (9:00) about a faulty MAP sensor and whether or not fuel dilution in a used oil sample might be related. Third, Joe shares his first experience in an RV-12 aircraft (13:20) - footage from this very same flight can be found on our instagram - check out the reel posted on Nov. 4th 2022. Finally, we wrap up with a voicemail shoutout from collaborator Matt B a.k.a. Garage Engineer (16:25).

'Tis the Pod before Christmas and Blackstone Joe is back with a triple-header of oil analysis topics. Do high wear levels go hand in hand with a high-mileage motor? A Toyota Tacoma and its 1GR-FE hitting 400,000 miles provide insight into our expectations from an aging engine (01:54). Then, Joe tackles an email question about what's the right time to sample a freshly rebuilt Lycoming IO-540 is. Hint: it's sooner than you'd expect (05:25). Thirdly, Joe breaks down the latest sample from an MB SL500, the first since we found high levels right after the new owner had completed the purchase. If you think engines can't improve their wear profile as they age, you might want to think again.

Plus! An announcement! The Slick Talk phone lines are open. Leave a message, question, or shoutout for Blackstone Joe at 614-407-6169 to be featured on an upcoming episode.

A customer recently emailed and had the question: is there a magic number somewhere on this report? They were asking if in any particular area, one number or result could tell them about the overall condition of their engine. Blackstone Joe thought this was an ideal time to break down the lack of an overall score/grade on our oil report, and why we instead opt for a much more comprehensive approach, breaking down the sample in its entirety and explaining why the results are high are low, and the reason why a high/low result may be indicative of a good result or a possible problem.

A podcast listener wrote in with an interesting question: how do we ensure consistency in the results, no matter who the analyst is? At Blackstone, there is a multi-layered review process that starts with the login process and carries through to the final report. Blackstone Joe is here to break down that approach, as well as give a special s/o to an engine with results that he just couldn't help but share with listeners of the show.

It's a common scenario in our line of work: engine runs dangerously low on oil and the owner is left to wonder what's the damage. Are repairs, replacement, or a rebuild inevitable? Or, did the engine escape without any obvious issues showing up in the used oil? Blackstone Joe is here to break down two scenarios with very different outcomes, detailing why it's important to not to jump to conclusions and go straight to the data.

View Details

The oil you buy probably has a recommended amount of mileage on it, "Good for xxx miles!" the text will usually read. When sending in a sample of the used oil, though, we often find ourselves recommending an interval that contradicts whatever is promised on the label, and some owners (rightfully so) want to know, "What gives?" In episode 76, Blackstone Joe is here to break down one of those very same instances, where the results, one in particular, really, called for a careful approach before extending the interval. The oil you run can certainly make a difference in some results, though, and that's why Blackstone Joe breaks down another example of how high levels of one particular metal can be directly related, and harmlessly so, to the oil the owner used. Enjoy!

Should I sample the first oil change? The short answer: yes. But you'll want to listen as Blackstone Joe breaks down the reason why sampling the first oil change is valuable, even if there is likely to be excess metal and silicon from wear-in and sealer washing outShould I wait to sample until I suspect a problem? It's always a good idea to check on your engine when you think something is wrong, but starting with oil analysis before you suspect a problem is even more valuable. Blackstone Joe digs into the benefits of sampling from the get-go and how you can use oil analysis to your advantage even after discovering a problem.

View Details

Picture this: the engine you own is facing either certain contamination or the possibility thereof, and you're now faced with deciding how to proceed with the maintenance plan. You might be wondering whether you should use an additive, if recent work might have impacted the results, or how you can go about looking for symptoms of a problem on your end. In this episode, Blackstone Joe is here to break down the do's and don'ts when it comes to addressing coolant, fuel, or excess dirt in the engine oil.

Today's questions include:

What's the difference between gas/diesel and aircraft engine oils?

Does it matter if I'm using a filter magnet?

Will residual additive skew results?

How much oil do I need to sample?

What information slip to use?

Is oil analysis worthwhile before buying?

No matter the reason for a customer's initial sample, there tends to be a familiar follow-up question: When do I check back? Listen as Blackstone Joe unpacks the question, and how it's important to send in a follow-up sample, especially when harder use is part of the equation.

It's never a good idea to jump to conclusions, especially when it comes to vehicle maintenance. In this episode, Blackstone Joe breaks down an example where an owner noticed low oil pressure, which can be evidence of a bearing problem, but not always. Enter the value of used oil analysis, where the owner was able to find out if the bearings were in fact wearing poorly, or if there might have been another explanation for the engine suddenly having low oil pressure.

It's the age old question. "Do I need to change my oil?"

Act 2: A Lycoming owner switches to 15W/50 and we find a noticeable change in the trends, one element in particular. Was it a problem or not? Listen and you'll hear Blackstone Joe unpack the outcome.

Act 3: Seawater can reach the engine oil, but will it always show up the same way? It's all about how severe the situation is. Blackstone Joe explains why there may or may not be water left in the oil, and how we can find evidence of seawater even when there is no actual moisture left in the used oil.

Act 4: An update on Slick Talk media

An O-300 had a problem and it wasn't obvious on the operator's end, but luckily they sent an oil sample along. The problem was clear as day in the used oil, helping the owner keep the engine up in the air and keeping the repairs far less costly than they would be otherwise. You can reference the report data on our Insta, FB, and Twitter pages. The drama doesn't end there, though. Listen as Blackstone Joe details a series of mysterious packages being sent to his office, the contents, and where the situation currently stands.

You want an engine to make good power, but making oil? Not so much. If you notice a rising oil level on the dipstick or that you drain more oil than you put in, there's a couple of contaminants that could be in play. Listen as Blackstone Joe details what sort of contaminants are likely to cause an increase in the oil level, how we find them in testing, and what to do next if you have a problem.

Whether it's an actor onstage or an engine, a break in character can speak to a problem, but not always do increases in wear or indicators of contamination result in a problem. Instead, a break in character (or trends) can be the result of wear-in from repairs, or a newly-installed part. In this episode, Blackstone Joe unpacks exactly this type of shift where an engine that had built a reputation for wearing well and not struggling with contaminants suddenly took a turn in another direction, with high levels that had more than one possible explanation. Listen as Blackstone Joe details the findings, what they could mean, and how communication with the owner helped solve the mystery

Every result has an explanation - sometimes that's high wear due to a problem, or elements that make clear the presence of contamination, the wrong oil being in use, and the list goes on. It's also true, though, that a less-than-ideal result doesn't always amount to a problem. High metals from wear-in, or elements that can be harmless additive as opposed to contamination are just a couple scenarios we come across daily. In order to present an accurate report and not just a page of elements with levels marked as "high" or "low" with no additional explanation, we offer an analysis that factors in all of the variables we can account for, and help you work through what's clearly an issue versus what isn't. A tale as old as the industry itself - metals are high in a used oil sample and the next question is: Is this too much? Or, maybe the question will go more like "Is my engine finished?" In some cases the data will be clear, and offer a definitive yes/no to these questions. But what about situations where we have to wait and see if metals don't improve from a sample with high levels? This episode is here to detail the process in determining high levels, the various sources (e.g. poor wear, additives, wear-in) and how it's important to contextualize a high level before writing it off as the good, the bad, and the ugly.

It's a common scenario: a vehicle's OLM (oil life monitor) says it's time for an oil change, but our results don't say the same thing; in fact it's rare to find the customer couldn't have gone even longer on the oil, regardless of what the OLM % was. Why? Listen along as our host Joe dissects what goes into an OLM calculation, and why used our oil analysis  is going to take things a step further in gauging the oil's condition and health of the engine. We pulled interesting customer questions from the email files, many of them falling under the FAQ category, so what better place to provide the answers then on a podcast that is easy to find and reference when you're getting ready to send a sample in. Join Joe, our host and senior analyst as he tackles the following: I'm going to send in my second sample and want to make sure its compared to the first, what do I need to do? Does make-up oil affect your test? How about additives such as Lucas, Restore, or Sea Foam?

Will an engine flush mess with my results? How new or old should an oil sample be prior to sending it in? And more!

For those not familiar with used oil analysis, there can be some skepticism about what a 3.5 oz. sample of engine oil can really tell folks about their engine and the shape its in. The truth is: you can learn a lot about the engine such as how it's wearing, if the oil is holding up well, and if there is any harmful contamination. One of our customers happened to send along a narrative detailing her Subaru's UOA (used oil analysis) history and how the data matched up perfectly with the engine issues she was having. Join our host, Joe, as he digs into the car's sample history and how the car's engine oil was in fact telling the tale.

Bearing wear tends to be a common concern for many M3 and M5 owners we know, and oil analysis is an essential tool for monitoring bearing wear without having to take an engine apart (and of course, for catching poor bearing wear before it turns into a serious problem or failure). But what many customers don't know is just what goes into our evaluation of bearing wear and whether or not it looks concerning for M-owners. Even if you're not a BMW owner or enthusiast, don't worry, this episode still packs plenty of worthwhile info when it comes to bearing wear and how poor wear or a problem shows up in testing. Join senior analysts Joe and Chris as they talk through the analyst's process in gauging bearing wear and how testing can be so essential in catching a problem early.
