This week, The Supreme Court decided a case of first impression in a case addressing whether a Uber driver is considered self employed for purposes of unemployment compensation benefits. The Synthes tax case was interesting in that the Department of Revenue which is responsible for collecting taxes argued for taxes to be calculated in a way that reduced that tax burden of Synthes when ordinarily you would see the department seeking increased taxes. In a family law case, the court evaluates what action constitutes criminally negligent behavior for purposes of an indicated child abuse report.
