“Suffering strips us of everything but Christ.”
If this quote is true, then could we then we willing to set aside our comfort for the allowance of suffering in our lives? Could suffering be a good thing?
From chapters 3 – 37, in the original text, the word for God is El Shaddai while in this chapter God’s name is Yahweh.
The reasoning is that El Shaddai means God almighty, but at the same time, illustrating that God was distant and detached. While Yahweh is the covenant name. Which is used when we first are introduced to Job and when God Himself speaks. Hence Yahweh refers to how the relationship is restored between God and Job.
We find that the Lord spoke out of a storm or whirlwind as some translations read.
2 Kings 2:1-11 Elijah is taken up in a whirlwind.
“As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.”
Psalm 77:18 and Nahum 1:3 A whirlwind can be a sign of God’s presence.
Psalm 77:18 “Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.”
We are also told of that great day when Jesus returns, Isaiah 66:15
“See, the Lord is coming with fire, and his chariots are like a whirlwind; he will bring down his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.”
God appears to Ezekiel in Ezekiel 1:4 “I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light.” Many translations interpret the windstorm as whirlwind…
Interestingly enough, it was a windstorm that killed all Jobs children as we read in Job 1:9.
Job 38:1-3
the questions for Job as we will see, were unanswerable and were not meant to be answered by Job, but to show Job that it was not his place to demand a response when he would ask them of God.
Job 38:4-7
Gods asking the question to bring awareness to Job of His amazing power, strength, and wisdom. Did you witness the angels when they shouted for joy? God did.
Job 38:8-11
reference to the second day of creation, when God spoke and separated the waters.
In the ancient world, a symbol of power and authority, was to be able to control the raging seas. Therefore God revealed His power and authority by reminding Job of the creation before him.
Job 38:12-13
Job, have you ever made the day light rise by you hand? Where does the darkness go when the light is turned on? It must be around here somewhere. For when the light is turned off the darkness returns…
Job 38:19-21
Job, where does light come from? Surely you know where light resides, where it is kept. You must know its nature and its source. Perhaps you know Job, for you have been around for so many years.
Job 38:22-23
Hail is often used as a tool for judgement. It almost seems as though God considers snow and hail as a treasure, the same way we would see gold and other precious metals. We have come to understand that hail is a part of our weather pattern. And yet, can be explained away with modern science. And yet, is man in control?

“Jesus Christ is indeed a blessed interpreter. An interpreter must understand two languages. Our Lord Jesus understands the language of God. Whatever are the great truths of divine intelligence and infinite wisdom, too high and mysterious for us to comprehend or even to discern, Christ fully understands them all… Moreover, Jesus understands our language, for he is a man like ourselves, touched with a feeling of our infirmities, and smarting under our sicknesses. He can read whatever is in the heart of man, and so he can tell to God the language of man, and speak to man in the language of man what God would say to him.” (Spurgeon)
Job 34:5-9
Job 7:21
Elihu in chapter 34:10 says, God is too Holy of a God to be unjust or to do anything wrong.
“Far be it from God to do evil, from the almighty to do wrong.” He deals with people fairly we find in verses 11-12.
God is all powerful. We find in verses 13-14.
God is almighty.
Without Him everything would fall apart and die. Verses 14-15.
13 Who appointed him over the earth? Who put him in charge of the whole world? 14 If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath, 15 all humanity would perish together and mankind would return to the dust.
God is just and fair-minded. Verses 16-18.
16 “If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say. 17 Can someone who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One? 18 Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’.
God is impartial. Verses 19-20.
19 “Who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands? 20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night; the people are shaken and they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand.”
God is omniscient. Verses 21-22.
21 “His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step. 22 There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide.”
God is the All knowing Judge, and judge of all. Verse 23.
23 God has no need to examine people further, that they should come before him for judgment.
God can do what He wants, without being held accountable to anyone …verse 24
24 Without inquiry he shatters the mighty and sets up others in their place.
God is sovereign. Verses 25-30…
25 “Because he takes note of their deeds, he overthrows them in the night and they are crushed.
26 He punishes them for their wickedness where everyone can see them, 27 because they turned from following him and had no regard for any of his ways. 28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before him, so that he heard the cry of the needy. 29 But if he remains silent, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he is over individual and nation alike,
30to keep the godless from ruling, from laying snares for the people.”

Here are nine characteristics of a "frenemy":
- They talk about you behind your back.
- They’re always asking for favors.
- Their emotionally needy and belittle your emotions.
- They only want to talk about themselves.
- They are jealous of your achievements.
- They resist and avoid you till they need something.
- They offer cruel criticism as good advice.
- Their joking around can be hurtful.
- They are always out to pick a fight with you.
When you offer comfort to those suffering:
1) Remember to pray ahead of time and with them if they allow it. Prayer is most critical in times like this.
2) Don’t let yourself butt in the conversation. Wait till you are given the go ahead.
3) Be ok with not having all the answers. And when you don’t know, be willing to admit it… It can save a lot of hurt feelings and offering of bad advice.
4) Try not to justify God’s actions. You are not God.
5) Be willing to listen and not just show up to give advice.
6) Try not to judge them. This is not the time to judge. Help them work through the pain, the circumstance. But don’t judge. Don’t condemn.
7) Do not let your insecurities get in the way.
8) Be sure not to let your personal feelings get in the way of offering comfort.

Scripture passages that speak to suffering.
1)Suffering to show us His strength and power and that He supports us.
Exodus 14:13-14 As the Israelites flee the hand of the Egyptians, Pharaoh is closing in, the Israelites are beginning to panic…
“Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
2)Suffering gives God opportunity to draw near.
Psalm 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
3)Suffering allows God to be at His work.
Psalm 34:19 – “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all;”
4)Suffering teaches us about God.
Psalm 119:71 – “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.”
5)Suffering Allows God’s Promises to be revealed and affirmed
Isaiah 43:2- “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
6)Christ suffered for our example. In Christ’s suffering, He revealed how deep His love for us was. He continued to love us despite it not being reciprocated always.
Isaiah 53:3- “He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.”
7)Suffering offers opportunity for later reward.
James 1:12 - “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
8)Suffering brings us to the point of trust. In Christ who conquers all we may have peace even though there will be trials.
John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
9)Suffering gives opportunity to live and strive to be more like Christ.
Philippians 3:10 – “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death…”
10)Through suffering, Christ accomplished our salvation
Hebrews 2:10 – “In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.”
11)Suffering is given, to fulfil the Law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 – “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
12)Suffering for Christ, is a part of the completion in following Christ.
Colossians 1:24 – “Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.”
13)Suffering is a part of what it means to follow Christ.

Make room in your life by letting go of the past, so that you can receive God's richest blessings.
Luke 1:67-80
- God forgave Zacharias for his disobedience, for his unbelief of what God would do.
- In the same way God forgave Zacharias, He will forgive you.
- We don’t have to hold on to our guilt, for God is willing to forgive us. We don’t have to let it influence our daily lives in a negative way.
- Satan does not have to have that hold on us.
- No matter how big. No matter how cruel, or distasteful, or selfish, God is willing to forgive you. But only if we repent of our sins.

The word "redeem" is derived from the Latin root meaning “to buy back”. This context would include buying back such things as any possession, object, or person, by some form of payment.
If we consider the Greek root word, it means to loose, in other words to set free. Examples of this is to be set free from chains, from slavery, from a prison sentence, from having been tied to something.
The redeemer would free from slavery of sin, to set free the prisoner, not physical prisoner but spiritual prisoner, imprisoned by their own sinful desires.
Of which is indicated in the Gospels, He is the redeemer who paid the price to set God's people free.
Christ came to give His life as a ransom for many, of which we can read about in Matthew 20:28, and Mark 10:45.
So Christ is the redeemer come to set His people free…

Winter in the Hebrew language is “setav," which means the season of hiding or the time of darkness. The winter, is the cold, crisp, season of darkness, unfruitfulness, bareness, infertility, and death. We see it in the signs of nature.
Spring offers hope, new life, fertility, fruitfulness, a time of refreshing. A time to take action. A time to get out and move around. The animals come out of hiding all winter.
The time that follows or breaks the winter is called in Hebrew language “nisan”.
Jesus was born in “setav”, in the darkness in the winter. But, He went to the cross in "nisan."
Jesus chose to bring redemption in the month of Nisan, the month of spring, the month of new beginnings.
God wants us to look to what could be. Not to concentrate on what we had, but on what could be.

Series: 5 Conversations Leading to Christmas
Sermon Title: Mary the mother of Jesus
Luke 1:26-38
3 steps to a Bible times marriage:
1) The engagement, this meant that the fathers would meet to come to a formal agreement regarding the plans the couple had.
2) After the agreement between father of groom and father of bride, there was a ceremony that took place where mutual promises were made.
3) Took place approximately one year after the time of the agreement and ceremony, the bridegroom would come and take his bride at an unexpected time.
-In the pledge, to be married, both bride to be and the groom to be,were under strict obligation to be faithful to their soon to be spouse.
-No physical intimacy between the two at this point.
10 things to consider as we look at this conversation:
1)This birth that will take place will be like no other birth on earth.
2) Mary, means “exalted."
3) Jesus means to deliver, to rescue, saviour.
4) The kingdom that Jesus was going to establish was going to be for all eternity. For all time.
5) Mary, no better example of being human than a virgin.
6) The “power of the most high” explains to us that there is no other that is stronger than God.
7) Jesus would be “called the Son of God. “In this definition we find that Jesus was the most divine.
8) Verse 36 we read of the baby to be the “Holy One”. This baby would be the most righteous, perfect, pure child — a child of God.
9) God was confirming His message through the angel.
10) “For nothing is impossible with God” ... The angel offered Mary, such sweet comfort in those five words.
