Rise of Emergent Leaders
Author: Dr. Dave Cornelius Throughout my experience coaching product development teams I have witnessed individuals who risked being denied by others to lead when there was an opportunity. These individuals are referred to as emergent leaders. Emergent leaders are individuals who assume a leadership role without being assigned by their manager. These informal leaders help to bring the best ideas directly from their lived experiences and work contexts. When a situation presents itself, the emergent leader is open to serving in that moment. My observation of the emergent leader is the demonstrated attributes that include: 1) servant leadership, 2) courage and 3) pursuit of craft mastery. These three attributes help the informal leaders to serve without seeking reward, take on tough activities, and build their craft mastery. In the season of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are leading in their community without assigned roles. You observe leadership in the social justice movement, parents becoming organizers for community learning for the neighborhood children, and athletes representing a cause with conviction. You may wonder, how are distributed knowledge workers demonstrating emergent leadership. The reality is they will need help and partnership with assigned leaders (managers, directors, etc.) to bring their whole self to work. Assigned leaders have an incredible opportunity to create nurturing environments that enable innovation freedom and emotional safety to give birth to people willing to walk into the uncomfortable emergent leadership role. The leaders with assigned authority must cultivate a space where these informal leaders can emerge, bring energy, and actionable outcomes throughout the organization. People celebrate high performing teams and they are often given the best assignments and admired for the outcomes achieved. High performing teams are known for being self-organizing, collaborative, and domain masters. Emergent leaders are the cornerstone of high performing teams, which are the desired team dynamics of any leader in the organization. This is the moment to practice the emergent leader behaviors in your organization. As we are dispersed and sequestered in our homes, there are opportunities to find ways lean into serving team members. There is no need to strive for perfection, but you can be helpful in leading team members toward becoming a high performing team by practicing emergent leadership.

I'm feeling hopeful because there are lots of things that we couldn't talk about before for fear of being told we'd be playing the race card. But now being taken seriously and being heard. Not by everyone, but by more people than before. Therefore, I'm hopeful that we can grow the number of people willing to hear so that we can start the process of reach an understanding, and I'm in. E76: Social Justice - Business Disruptor or Hype Cycle?
We are currently living through a period of intense social upheaval. People are taking to the streets in every major city across the country, protesting injustice towards BIPOC, women, and the LGBT+ community – committed by their own federal and local governments. It’s the kind of upheaval that can change a society forever, and in some places the protests are seeing results; 13 U.S. cities have cut funding from their police departments in light of the protests, and the Supreme Court just ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 offers protection to LGBT+ individuals, marking a new era in trans rights. Things appear to be moving in an inclusive and progressive direction, but there’s just one problem: we’ve seen and heard all this before. What will make this time different? I am both hopeful and skeptical that the Black Lives Matter movement and other protests will change the hearts and minds of business leaders to implement diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their culture. I believe that DEI is essential for every business, simple because of what I learned in business school: maximize the value for shareholders. Companies that have one-sided workforces (all white, all male, etc.) will likely have a limited perception of the world. This can limit the way a workforce views a problem, keeping them from true innovation that disrupts their industries. If existing business leaders truly want to maximize the value of their business for their stakeholders, they will need to shift their culture and embrace DEI. If business leaders approach social justice with an innovation lens, perhaps we can take an innovative view of this season of disruption. The leaders would fit into one of the following groups:
- Innovators: These individuals seek out novelty; it’s like a hobby for them. They are limited in numbers. Other people see them use new things and feel braver themselves about trying them.
- Early Adopters (visionaries): Early adopters look for breakthrough opportunities, and they are willing to pay well to be first with the new approaches. This group relies on its own intuition and vision to make buying decisions.
- Early Majority: These are practical minded consumers. If an opportunity seems useful, this group will try it. The early majority are cautious of fads.
- Late Early Majority: These people wait for something to become well established. They don’t feel confident in their ability to deal with change and often buy from big companies.
- Laggards: For personal and/or economic reasons, laggards are not looking to buy into new change.
As businesses embrace DEI, their worldview will expand, and innovation will become easier. However, this doesn’t mean that growth will be a constant upward slope. As workforces become more diverse and innovation increases, the five innovation hype cycles may influence the behaviors of business leaders. The Innovation Hype Cycles are:
- Innovation Trigger:A potential humanity breakthrough that kicks things off. Early proof-of-concept stories and media interest trigger significant publicity. Often no real outcomes exist, and viability is unproven.
- Trough of Disillusionment: Interest wanes as experiments and implementations fail to deliver.
COVID-19, You Ruined My 2020 Plans
By Dave “Dr. Dave” Cornelius, DM On Wednesday, March 3, 2020, I drove from meeting with a client in Phoenix to my home in Tucson. I had planned to attend an entrepreneur event at the University of Arizona, but I did not feel well so I decided not to attend. That night I got the chills, body aches, fever, the works: the flu. This can’t be the flu, I thought. I took the flu shot. When I take the flu shot, I never get the flu. I called my client the next day. I let them know that I would be out for the rest of the week and would return to work on Monday. By Sunday the chills and body aches had gone away, but I had a cough that took my breath away. My client kindly offered to have me to work remotely for the rest of the week… The following week, they told me that everyone would be working remotely. The Phoenix office would be temporarily closed due to COVID-19. I had big plans for 2020. I was going to pay off some debt and experience financial freedom, all while launching a startup company. I know this may sound like an oxymoron – how does someone get out of debt AND launch a startup? But it was possible for me; I was about to sign a contract with my client that would have kept revenue flowing through Q1 of 2021. But now? That contract, along with just about everything else in the world, is in uncertain territory. Perhaps you can relate! We are currently in a Turbulent, Uncertain, Novel, and Ambiguous (TUNA) season. I’m sure most of us are feeling some emotional distress during these times – I certainly am (I enjoy fresh tuna, but not when it is turning my world upside down)! The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented event in our lifetime, and it has created turbulence, uncertainty, and ambiguity for our lives and businesses. We have a health crisis, social justice challenges, financial crisis, and political chaos in the United States and around the world. As the chaos has persisted this past 5 months, I have found myself asking one big question: “How will I survive this TUNA mess and get back to my 2020 plans?” I am sure many others are having the same conversations and worries. Lately, I’ve been researching ways to navigate this TUNA dilemma, as my plans prior to COVID-19 have now been nuked. In my research, I found a few articles on scenario-based planning that may help, and I’ve turned to the agile concept and practice of Design Thinking Strategy to help me visualize my choices in this new world. How does Design Thinking Strategy work? There are seven main steps:
- Identify the strategic problem (what is blocking us from achieving our aspirations?)
- Frame a question (turn the problem into a question; “How might we…”)
- Generate strategic possibilities
- Ask, what would have to be true to make these possibilities a reality?
- Identify barriers (what is the greatest challenge?)
- Test to learn (research, create prototypes, run design tests)
- Make a choice
Use the strategic choice cascade:
- Winning aspiration
- Where to play?
- How to win?
- What are the capabilities?
- Management systems
If I use the Design Thinking Strategy framework, I can define a path forward for my current situation. Let’s break it down: My Strategic Problem: COVID-19 disrupted economic flow for trainers and coaches My Question: How can I train and coach clients virtually and retain a competitive rate? Possibilities: Use Zoom meeting with PowerPoint; Create on-demand, stand-alone courses What would have to be true: Clients are open to virtual training and coaching. Identify barriers: It may be tough to connect with decision makers; I’ll have to develop a digital course ...
Dr. Dave: Hello, and welcome to the KnolShare with Dr. Dave podcast. I am Dr. Dave, your host. My conversation today is with April Jefferson, the Soul Crafts Woman, and we're going to discuss growing equity in Black lives and the agile community and beyond. Dr. Dave: I met April a few years ago at the Agile Alliance conference. What I can remember is that she walked up to me and a few African-American men and called us endangered species. Endangered species. And we're like, "Wow." I believe it was right after the death of Trayvon Martin or one of those other senseless death of Black men in the United States. We laughed about it at the time, but it sent a shock to my soul that I could be part of that statistics and it would be a reality. I just want to say that I'm super excited for this conversation today with April, and really look forward to the work we will be doing together, now and into the future. This is an important conversation for us to have, and I am just so grateful that we have the opportunity to do so. Dr. Dave: Let me start off with a ... I'm being very festive for you today. I want you to notice that I'm wearing a Hawaiian shirt because it's you, April Jefferson, the Soul Crafts Woman. How are you today? April: Oh, beautiful. Oh, I already know it's going to be fun. We're beginning right, with laughter Dr. Dave: You have to begin with some laughter and some fun, right? Well, that's what we're about, right? We're happy people, I would think. April: Yeah. Dr. Dave: So, hey, let's just jump into some questions. I have a few questions, and I know you're going to have great responses. I know you are. I don't have to worry about that. So I know you're leading this Growing Equity in the Agile Community for Black Lives initiative. What has surprised you most about the response and the participation by people? April: That people have put their guard down and stepped into vulnerability. And something that's quite polarizing, globally, that this is a global conversation, and that what I would I say, that the global Black community, we have been silent for a long time. And that there was no psychological safety to be completely forthright with what's going on within us. I felt that other people had the freedom to do so and that people gave space to listen. To listen to us. That we had a platform. Because oftentimes, that it involves us always listening first and not having the space or not it being reciprocal, right? To listen, and get curious. And that is about us accommodating versus people figuring out that taking time to be uncomfortable, and that's a big thing, is that it's a lot of work to be uncomfortable and say, "I'm going to sit here and figure out some tough things in that uncomfortability." The fact that people did that authentically. April: And what I've been hearing out of it, which is probably one of the most important things, is that authentic relationships have been formed from it. Some people have honestly articulated like, "Yeah, I don't have Black people in my life, any people of color in my life, personally." People have shared that. And it's not that there was any hate there. Just, "I've never had that." Maybe they're from communities where there's not a lot of diversity. Dr. Dave: Yeah. April: And to seek that out.

Today, the conversation is what my guest Kemmy Raji on the Agile for Humanity Social Justice and Impact Series. Kemmy and I recently connected to collaborate on the 5 Saturdays STEAM (https://5Saturdays.org) program that provides 21st century skills to high school students. The 21st century skills include design thinking, software development or coding, Agile delivery practices, entrepreneurship and job readiness on effective communications. I am super excited about this collaboration. Let’s begin the real talk with Kemmy Raji.
Dr. Dave: Hey, Kemmy, thank you for spending some time with us today. I want to learn more about you. We’re doing the Agile for Humanity Social Justice Series, and thank you for agreeing.
Kemmy Raji: Thank you for having me, doc. It’s great to be here. It’s just a pleasure.
Dr. Dave: Yeah, and I hear rumors that potentially, or maybe a reality, that you’re going to be joining the board for the Agile Alliance. I voted for you, just to let you know.
Kemmy Raji: Oh, thank you so much for voting for me. Yes, I guess we can say it’s a rumor, but I was nominated and I’m hoping that come next year it will become a reality.
Dr. Dave: Okay. Cheering you on. I’m going to be a big cheerleader for that.
Kemmy Raji: Thank you.
Dr. Dave: Yeah. So, here’s the thing. Let’s jump in and let me ask you a few questions, and we’re going to talk about an elevator pitch. I want an elevator pitch about you. I know about you a little bit, but I think you know more about yourself, so why don’t you go ahead and give us an elevator pitch about who you are and what do you do?
Kemmy Raji: Oh, wow. I hope I can turn that into an elevator pitch. I’m still trying to learn how to do that.
Dr. Dave: 30 seconds.
Kemmy Raji: My name is Kemmy. I go by Kemmy, but my official name is Oluwakemi and it’s an urban name in Nigeria and it means God has been good to me. And I’m currently based in Canada, although I see myself as a global citizen. So, wherever I find myself is where I belong. So, right now I’m a Canadian. I am an adjunct coach. I coach our enterprise team organizations. And equally, I’m a professional coach, which means that I am not just an Agile coach, but I coach individuals around their career, life and all as well. I am involved in my community in Canada and I have been in the US as well, volunteering for Scrum Alliance or speaking webinars and conferences as well. So, I have got three boys, actually, ranging from 18 to three year old. And when I’m not doing Agile, that’s what keeps me busy.
Dr. Dave: Good. You forgot one very important thing that you’re involved with. You just started, what is that?
Kemmy Raji: Ah, that’s right. I missed it all because it’s still new to me, and that is the 5 Saturdays. It’s very close to my heart.

Dr. Dave: Hello, this is Dr. Dave Cornelius, AKA Dr. Dave. And I’m hosting the Agile for Humanity podcast series in partnership with the Agile Alliance. The goal is to have real talk with people in the Agile community that are black, indigenous, and people of color, as well as people that are white. The conversations will not be limited to people in the United States, so I’m going to do a virtual walk about globally to get different experiences about social injustice for black, indigenous, and people of color in the Agile community. In the Agile community we talk about changing the way we work, but do we change our hearts and humanity to love? Meaning being patient and kind people that look different than us. Today, I’m having a real talk with my friend Stuart McCalla and the Agile for Humanity podcast series. So hey, Stuart McCalla, my brother. How are you and your family? How are you guys doing during this season of COVID-19?
Stuart McCalla: Dr. Dave, we are doing okay. We’re inside. That’s like my dad joke. Everybody asks us, what’s going on? I’m like, “Oh, we’re inside.”
Dr. Dave: We’re inside. Things are good?
Stuart McCalla: Things are good.
Dr. Dave: Good.
Stuart McCalla: Can’t complain. And in this day and age there’s a lot to complain about, but we’re going steady.
Dr. Dave: That’s great, man. So look, I’m grateful that you’re gracious to give us your time, to discuss our humanity and what it means in our lives and to people in the Agile community. When we talk, I know sometimes we go really deep about our experiences and we share some intimate moments and just what it’s like to be black men. We’re Caribbean roots, no doubt, living in the space that we do. And so before we jump into the interview, tell me, what have you been up to lately as a coach, an entrepreneur, husband, a dad, what’s been going on with you?
Stuart McCalla: So right now I’m a managing partner for a group called Evolution Services. We’re based out of LA. And so we coach primarily high-growth startups and then also larger systems as well too. We do a lot of depth work for our leaders that we coach. We do diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability work. We have an amazing leader that helps us with that named Rudy Nickens, and who we all support. As you can imagine right now he’s super busy and we get to support him as well. And you know, I think a little bit about sort of the Agile space and how does diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability… How has it manifested in the Agile space and how will it manifest in the Agile space, and certainly within business as well too.
Dr. Dave: Okay, that’s good.

Dr. Dave: So, hello, Aaron. Thank you for hooking up for another session or for your session with the KnolShare with Dr. Dave podcast. How are you doing today?
Aaron Eden: It’s been great. Just another Monday even though it’s Tuesday.
Dr. Dave: Yeah. Just another Monday everyday somewhere. So let’s talk about, we’re going to talk about the Startup Weekend that you’re planning for in the Phoenix. And so, as you’re planning that, this statewide thing, what is this event all about anyway? What is the Startup Weekend? What does it mean? What’s the purpose? Why don’t you give us some insights about this program that you’re doing.
Aaron Eden: Whoops. Startup Weekend has been around for years. I don’t know how many years but years, probably at least 10, I guess. And it’s a global event really intended to ignite local entrepreneurial ecosystem. So getting entrepreneurs connected together, even if they don’t have a lot of experience, but they’re considering maybe starting a business, whatever the case may be. But really trying to get those entrepreneurs connected with each other and launching new businesses. Take that to Startup Weekend Arizona, what we’re really trying to do in that case is taking it up to a whole another level by having it being fully virtual across the State of Arizona. Number one, of course, connecting entrepreneurs and hopefully helping them launch successful businesses. But then one of the key opportunity areas that we see with entrepreneurs across the state is really diving deep with their customers and making sure that they’re solving real problems for real customers.
Aaron Eden: I can speak as a technologist, we love building stuff, and we love driving in those ways. And so really it’s important to know that we’re building stuff that customers actually need and care about and solves a problem for them. So what’s different about this Startup Weekend, we’re going to focus 100% over the course of this weekend on market research and understanding customers, and interviewing customers, and observing customers, and applying that to the business model and doing that with mentors. So it’s an exciting opportunity for our state.
Dr. Dave: That’s really cool, man. So this is really an ecosystem for people who are starting a business. Starting up some type of entrepreneurial venture, is really what we’re doing. And we’re bringing everyone together and you’re doing it in a virtual way as opposed to people coming together physically, otherwise we’ll have to have mask and so on and so forth, right?
Aaron Eden: Yeah. We’re only a month away and we’ve got regional representative… We’re trying to have regional representatives from every County in the state. So that it really is an Arizona thing, not a Tucson thing, but an Arizona thing. And we’ll see. Similarly on the mentoring side, make sure we’ve got mentors from all over the place. So lots of diversity.
Dr. Dave: Nice. So how long have you been involved with the Startup Weekends? Not just the Arizona one, but in general, how long have you been involved?
Aaron Eden: Man, eight years, nine years, something like that.

Interview with Zaira
Dr. Dave: I’m really stoked that we got this opportunity to connect, to talk about your achievements, as one thing, but also really important, I’m really excited about the fact that we got to meet when you first came through the 5 Saturdays STEAM program three years ago, and just looking to see where you are today. So let’s start by talking about being one of the 5 Saturdays 2020 scholarship recipient. How does that make you feel? You think about it, for the very first time we met you, I think you just finished your freshman year or you were a sophomore and… How does it make you feel?
Zaira: Well, I was somewhat shocked, but extremely grateful for the opportunity because I had gone to the workshop every summer while in high school and I learned so much from it and ate a lot. So I really thought that I benefited all I could have from it. But then you guys blessed me with a scholarship and I was like, “Oh, they just keep on giving.”
Dr. Dave: That’s what we do. That’s what we do. So graduated from high school, which is awesome. Where are you going to go to college?
Zaira: To the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Dave: Wow. You’re going to be a Cal person.
Zaira:
Yeah.
Dr. Dave: That’s amazing. What made you choose Cal?
Zaira: I think their social justice programs and their involvement with the community and because I also want to major in sociology and minor in policy analysis to pursue a career in social work, specifically social welfare. It just seemed like overall fit.
Dr. Dave: Well, that sounds wonderful, especially with what’s going on today. The challenges. So talk to me about the skills that you got from 5 Saturdays. You started it somewhere after your freshman year, and then you came back during your sophomore year, and then you came back in 2019 as a learning facilitator, which is… You got to change t-shirts, you got to be at the front of the room. What leadership skills did you learn?
Zaira: Well, when I was a student, the end of my freshman year and the end of my sophomore year, I learned new strategies for brainstorming and bouncing off ideas off of different people. I learned how to work within a group while also being able to within my group work with other groups and brainstorm with them. There’s so many skills, it’s just hard off the top of my head, but as a learning facilitator, I think all those skills as a student carried on, because I knew what it was like to be a student and as a learning facilitator, I was like, “Okay, you don’t know blank, so let’s start from point zero and work up.” It just helped with process of brainstorming and creating businesses and expressing ideas.
Dr. Dave: I thought it was fun. I always enjoyed the projects that you and your team came up with. It was really so much fun. So how will these leadership skills help you as you move to the next level in college?
Zaira: Well, I know how to be a team player. I know how to lead within a team. And now I also know how to coach a team. So in college I can work as a student alongside my peers while also working as a tutor or a teacher’s assistant to help the people outside of my own learning circle.

Dr. Dave: Okay, awesome. Let’s just get started. Hey, just welcome to the KnolShare with Dr. Dave podcast. I’m just really excited to have you on today. We’ve been having conversations back and forth via LinkedIn and through the Project Management Institute. I’m so excited to be able to talk to you about leadership. Do us a favor and just give us a one minute pitch about yourself so the audience can learn more about you. So whenever you’re ready, just jump on in and we’ll go from there.
Earl: Yep. Very good. Yeah. The one minute pitch that I have formulated and that I give now most of the time is that when they say, who is Earl Cobb? I say, well, Earl Cobb currently is a very satisfied retired technology executive, 34 years. Most of that was with Motorola and at various levels. I ran venture companies. I was the CEO of a startup back in the late 90s called MedContrax. And my last corporate task, before I retired, I ran all of the critical data centers for Wells Fargo Bank, right before the Wachovia merger.
After that merger, that’s when I got a chance to almost 10 years ago now to the corporate shield and just having a ball as a small business owner, entrepreneur, author, grandfather, loving husband, taking care of a wife who still is employed and traveling the world.
Dr. Dave: Hey, all good stuff?
Earl: He’s a blessed guy, put it that way. Yes.
Dr. Dave: Man, that is so good to hear that you’re a blessed guy. Today we’re going to talk about leaderless leaders. A very interesting way of talking about leaders in a different way. So for you, how would you define a leaderless leader in your words, your experience?
Earl: That’s a very interesting way to qualify leaders in terms of leaderless. What I’ve found, having studied and written about and talked about leadership specifically for the past 10 years, of course, 20 years before that actually having the responsibilities of an executive and leading large companies and initiatives. The idea of a leader, the way you would describe it within an organization is normally someone, supervisor, manager, team leader, VP executive, okay, who has a responsibility and finds out that a lot of other skills, a lot of other capabilities, but they run short on having the leadership skills and the leadership acumen that they need to do and be successful at the thing that they’re being asked to do right now. That’s how I would define a leaderless leader.
Dr. Dave: Earl, if you think about the traits or attributes that you would expect out of a leaderless leader, what are some of those traits that you would think of?
Earl: That’s interesting because when you think of leadership traits and for those who are somewhat of students of leadership, it’s normally classically defined in terms of traits and attributes and those types of things. But think about this, a trait, an attribute, whether it’s presence and vision, clarity, persistence they’re all nouns. From an experience standpoint, I mean when you actually are out there, when you’re actually faced with the need to elevate your level of leadership, you quickly find out that leadership is really a verb. Or this is how you describe an action.
Earl: And when you think of all the traits out there, you can Google and go through all the research, dozens of traits. And most of the traits that you think about fall into the category of that one challenge that a particular individual had at that time. Dr. Dave Cornelius: Okay. Let’s start off with your name.
Justin Williams: My name is Justin Williams
Dr. Dave Cornelius: Okay. And what organization that you belong to or that you lead?
Justin Williams: Several, but I think the most relevant one would be CIVX.
Dr. Dave Cornelius: Okay. And that’s CIVX?
Justin Williams: Correct.
Dr. Dave Cornelius: Okay. So what led you to your current position in your journey?
Justin Williams: So with CIVX, it’s sort of the intersection of two threads of my world, that of an entrepreneur and an educator supporting the entrepreneurial innovation community here in Tucson, which is built on a paradigm of lean startup, and agile thinking, and customer value creation as a generalized set of principles and tools to help aspiring entrepreneurs build by creating high growth, often technology-enabled startup companies.
Justin Williams: I created an organization in 2011 around that space called Startup Tucson. It was built to be a framework for catalyzing the startup ecosystem here in Tucson. And so we built and launched and ran a variety of programs through Startup Tucson focused on things ranging from networking mixers, Startup Drinks, to pitch feedback meetups like 1 Million Cups, to growth incubator or we called it a venture development program called Thrive, and large scale multi thousand person innovation festival called TENWEST, along with a variety of other initiatives like a coworking space, colab workspace. Startup Tucson was an entrepreneur support organization and an incubator of initiatives to grow the ecosystem.
Justin Williams: Prior to that I had taken over the remnants of three nonprofits and merged them to become a local technology trade association called AMIT, Aerospace Manufacturing and IT. After running that for several years as the largest technology trade association in Tucson, we merged it with an organization called the Arizona Technology Council out of Phoenix and ran it for another three years before I left that organization. As part of leaving it, I also launched Startup Tucson at that point.
Justin Williams: The origin of this shift from the technology company, business economic development landscape to the more action-oriented individual work would actually be launching the event TEDx Tucson here in Tucson in 2010. So that was another key piece of this. And all of this is sort of the intersections of people who think about the future, who are willing to take actions, and feel empowered that they have the right to do something, that they have wisdom to contribute to making their community better.
Justin Williams: There’s an activist culture around leadership in a community, and so I began generalizing all of that work. The work in terms of building community through a trade association or a startup support organization using the values of having the empowerment or the permission structures that entrepreneurs and founders have to go implement some sort of change that they’d love to see instead of just feeling helpless, or feeling unable to, or without permission, or wisdom to be able to do something.
Justin Williams: That’s all one growth. From managing its trade association through and their vision to improve the world through their startup ideas.

The future of 21st century education will be affected by the Age of Agility, Software, & Digital. We will meet with a few high school student educators to learn about their context, plans, and actions to help high students be prepared to survive in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguity (VUCA) world.
In a recent article by PWC titled the “ The talent challenge: Harnessing the power of human skills in the machine age”, CEO’s top business priorities are: 1) innovation (23%), 2) Human capital (15%), and 3) Digital and technology capabilities (15%).
77% of CEOs struggle to find the creativity and innovation skills they need.
Question 1: What are the biggest challenge students will face to be ready to work in the 21st century workplace, where there is a digital and soft skills requirement?
Question 2: What is the big idea that will shape the level of readiness for high school students to complete in a 21st century workplace?
Question 3: What are a few tangible steps we can take now that will help the high school students’ readiness?

Stephanie is actively working with startups across the Arizona-Sonora by implementing Startup Unidos; most recently Startup Unidos Youth VozFrontera in Nogales, AZ and Pascua Yaqui in Tucson, AZ, Latinx In Tech Startup Weekend in Tucson, AZ and Emprende Amigo in Phoenix area. In March 2019 she was recognized Minority Business Owner of the Year at Inside Tucson Businesswomen of Impact.
In October 2018 she was recognized at Idea Funding for initial and future efforts to build the entrepreneurial community in Tucson and received the Larry Hecker and Sherry Hoskinson Bright Futures Award. In December 2016 she was recognized by Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as 40 under 40 Woman of the Year.
Blaine Young Bio
Blaine Young is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Tucson Unified School District, the largest k-12 school district in southern Arizona. As the school district’s cabinet level representative responsible for Information Technology, Mr. Young must ensure IT strategy, planning and operations are fully aligned with the superintendent’s vision and the school district’s priority focus on student achievement and student preparation for college and career readiness.
Mr. Young has over 30 years’ experience in all aspects of Information Technology.
Dr. Dave: 00:17 Yeah, I think so. So we’re going to talk about Alchemy Code Lab. Where did Alchemy Code Lab come from?
Marty: 00:25 Well it really was a bit of serendipity. I’ve been in software development for a little over two decades now. Most of it as either a developer or a leader within a development organization. I left a company. I was working remotely for about six, seven years and September of 2013 they wanted either me to move to San Diego or we were going to go separate ways. I had family, kids here and I was like, thanks no thanks. Good amicable break. I had one of those moments when you have a bit of a pause where you’re like, huh, what’s next? I had as a developer had gotten really into JavaScript and this was really about 2000, 2013 is really the current ibex or the modern era of technology that we’re in. Cloud based services and HTML5 and web apps are taking off.
Marty: 01:19 I decided to try startup stuff. I’d always been in midsize companies or enterprise environments. So I did some dumb consulting freelance, find some entrepreneurs, help them out and was doing that. One of those moments, I think we have in our life where I saw someone posted something about teaching and it was just like, you get that draw ever, you’re like I got to go check that out. You don’t know why, but you’re just interested. There’s a code school out of Seattle called Code Fellows. They were the first code school in Seattle in 2013. There’s like 19 or 20 now.

Shifting Legacies
We often think of legacies as being that of which belong to athletes, musicians, politicians, actors, and those in the spotlight. I can remember statistics of Michael Jordan, Reggie Jackson, The Jackson Five albums, cyclist Lance Armstrong, Whitney Houston, President Barack Obama, and many others. These trend setters left an impression on certain aspects of my life. I never think about my own legacy!
I wonder how many of you think about your own legacy? How will your family, friends, and community reflect upon you now and in the future?
Parents, family members, and community leaders have played the role of helping loved ones to shift legacy by sharing encouraging words, creating safe spaces, and being available as mentors. Some have paved the way by paying for college and opening doors to careers that are only available through the familial connection. We see the benefits reaped by those individuals in favor and how the possibility of their legacy is shifted because of good fortune.
And then there are those who by no fault of their own, do not have anyone to be their advocate or ally. They do not have a roadmap to follow. No doors are open for them and favors are often expected to be repaid in ways that are inhumane. I think of the kids without parents in the gap years (16 to 18 years old) and they are no longer protected by the foster care system. I ask myself, what can I do to help them with a roadmap or open a few doors that may shift their legacy?
The bigger question is do we want to stick with the status quo or make changes that can shift legacies?
In 2007, the 44th President of the United States during the democratic primary season began with this talk of hope and change, peppered with statements of “yes we can – si se puede”. After Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States, something that seemed so foreign and unbelievable to me, I said “yes I can and yes I must”. My goal was resolute, and my intentions were clear. As written, “To whom much is given, much is expected”.
In 2009 I started to ponder what if I used the talents that I have been given to help high school students learn vocational skills that would potentially shift their legacy even if it was for one generation. High school in my opinion is the scary time before reality sets in and we have to be responsible for our own survival. You have to find your way by getting a job, going to college, joining the military, or you know, figure something out. The goal was to introduce people marginalized by economic limitations to a career in technology and business, that was powered by agile practices. The goal was also to provide skills in job readiness and effective communications, filling skills gap to be prepared for the job market with resumes and the ability to communicate effectively.

This is a special episode on Diversity and Inclusion in the agile community that was kick started at the AgileTonight event during the Agile Alliance Agile2018 conference in San Diego, CA. At the AgileTonight event on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, four Agile Alliance members shared stories about the direct effect of Diversity and Inclusion on their lives with a room full of other members. It was a first and I am very appreciative to be a part of that experience. It was a beginning of a conversation that was long overdue. Thank you Agile Alliance members for demonstrating courage to create space for this conversation to take place. I was one of the members sharing stories about inclusion. Many people came up to me and said thank you for being courageous for sharing your story, putting yourself out there meant a lot to me. Others felt the conversation was too light and did not go far enough, because they wanted a deeper dive into the Diversity and Inclusion topic. A few, who were transparent enough said, it was too sad and heavy. I will assume positive intent for those who felt the subject was too heavy. Four brave people decided to join me for this podcast at the Agile2018 conference in San Diego, CA. They were Alex Harms, Jenny Tarwater, Cara Turner, and Steve Holyer. They requested that we use the title “Looking Forward: What we can do”. We used Lean Coffee to create topics for the Diversity and Inclusion discussion.
