We are back from our summer break! This summer has been busy and fun and has left us needing a bit more of intentional connection with our children. Although so many ways to connect come intuitively, there are also some less obvious ways our children ask for our attention. This week’s episode is all about keeping (or maybe finding) your identity in motherhood. Having children is such a fulfilling and busy part of our lives. Often as mothers we naturally let any hobbies or passions fall to the wayside that don’t fit right in with our family routine and lifestyle. We are believers that investing in yourself, your values, and your passions, is healthy and fulfilling for both you as a parent and also for your children. How do you show your children what you value? By modeling it. We hope you enjoy this episode of Kindred Conversations. You can join in the conversation @kindred_conversations on Instagram.

We’ve just added another must-read to our collection! How to Raise an Adult presents us with the over-parenting dilemma and the hard-to-face consequences that have come with it. As the freshman dean at Stanford University, the author of this book had her eyes opened to the problems of over reaching parents (which are much greater than you might initially think). We loved the principles taught in this book about connecting meaningfully with your children while stepping back and allowing them to take charge and responsibility of their own life. Julie presents a number of thought provoking chapters that coach parents in how to raise an adult. We hope you enjoyed this episode of Kindred Conversations! Submission Episode! The fall season seems to bring with it a sense of self reflection. Instead of the constant (fun) chaos and noise of summer, we start to look inward to fill our cups. Into our homes and into our hearts. If we aren’t practiced in appreciating what is before us, this transition inward can feel a bit empty. Rather than chasing contentment with the next thing, the next phase, or the next finale, we would like to argue that contentment is often found by staying put and being present. And although this principle is an important lesson for life, it feels particularly poignant at this time. This episode was inspired by the first of four "pillars of shared meaning" from The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman. The pillar is titled "rituals of connection" and is all about creating consistent opportunities that all parties depend on and enjoy to enhance your feeling of "togetherness".

We both took a moment to reflect on our personal family cultures and rituals and also the opportunities where we could enhance the feeling of connection or create a more meaningful tradition. We encourage everyone who listens to take a few minutes to make your own lists as well and to incorporate at least one new tradition or ritual into your family culture.

Rest and renewal can feel like an impossible goal at times, but they are necessary if we are going to show up in the ways we want for all the people we love. Of course, being a mother is a fulfilling and love-filled role, but without meaningful breaks we can easily lose our purpose and motivation.

The need to have regular moments of recharge has felt especially important to us recently. In this episode we discuss the ways that we are currently finding rest and renewal. We reflect on our habits and how a personal check-in can help us avoid falling into routines that don't currently serve us. We would love to hear from you on this topic as well!

In a culture that overemphasizes size and appearance it can feel confusing and difficult to navigate a time in which your body seems to change with as many phases as the moon. How do you learn to love every phase? How do you trust your body while encouraging healthy habits? How do you teach your child to have a healthy body image and positive relationship with food?

We were so happy to bring Kimberly onto the podcast this week to answer our questions all about body image and intuitive eating! Kimberly is an eating disorder therapist who is currently in her fourth year of her clinical psychology doctorate. We couldn't be more grateful to have had her on this week's episode! We finally got around to recording a discussion on one of our most requested topics: Navigating those first few weeks postpartum! This phase can be so blissfully beautiful but can often bring with it a level of sadness, exhaustion, discomfort in our more... fragile... areas, and just a whole lot of hormonal dysfunction.

We are both well acquainted with the idea of childhood (and especially the newborn phase) passing all too quickly. Unfortunately, that well-intentioned commentary can add to the pressure in those first few days and weeks. We want to take some of that pressure off of new moms (whether for the first time, or the sixth) by giving you the permission you need to feel all of your feelings and navigate this phase as you see fit. That may mean quickly or slowly, with a full calendar or an empty one, in your bed or on your walking trail, with a bottle in tow or a full breast, and hopefully it can always be full of patience and grace toward yourself and your baby.

Connection with our children is so often in the spotlight that it can be so easy to forget to invest in our connection with our spouse. Creating and streamlining regular routines of connection with our partner can make the efforts to invest in our relationship easier and more frequent.

In this episode we discuss the submissions from our listeners of rituals of connection within your marriage. A big theme were rituals at a certain time of day- some in the morning, some at night. Some rituals are daily, some are weekly, some are quarterly, and a few are yearly. As always, we are so grateful for all that we learned from you!

This weeks episode has been requested by a number of listeners and we are so excited to share it with you! Now that working from home has become such a widespread option, working at all has become an option for so many stay-at-home moms who previously didn't think they had the choice. But when it comes to balancing work and parenting, the question of "HOW?" quickly follows.

We sat down with Olivia Gochnour to get her insight on time management, the difficulties of being a working mom, the benefits of having a professional outlet, and how to find balance in the chaos.

We expect so much of our bodies and sometimes it feels like they can let us down. We expect to have regular cycles, get pregnant, carry a child to full term, deliver them, nurse them, and then care for those babies and ourselves and everyone else around us! As women, we also can be ten different sizes in a year and be healthy at every one but learning to appreciate your body at every shape and stage can be more difficult. Rather than focus on the difficulties our bodies face, we want to practice gratitude for all that they do for us and for others.

Practicing gratitude for our bodies can lead to healthier eating, happier mindsets, and more intentional movement in our lifestyles. Brittany shares what she learned from The Gratitude Diaries and Paris talks about her experience postpartum. We truly are so grateful for all that our bodies do for us and we want to give back to them.  We hope that this episode inspires you to recognize the gifts you receive daily from your body.

This week's episode is special to us because it is not only a tribute to being intentional in your mothering, but it's also a tribute to our mothers. We each chose three things that we learned from our moms to discuss. From fostering positive relationships with your children to setting aside time to put your marriage first, we are grateful for the examples that were modeled to us. Regardless of what your relationship looks like with your mom, thinking about what three things you want to pass on to your children is a great thought or journal prompt that we would encourage everyone to reflect on!

Minimalism can feel like a buzzword that only the most committed can attain. Our guest today, Rachel Bright, made living a more simplified lifestyle seem like both a worthy goal and also a realistic one. Paris and I are both feeling inspired to clear out our excess in order to make room for calm, clean, and intentional time in our homes.

Recommended Books:

  • Outer Order Inner Calm by Gretchen Rubin

  • The Joy of Less by Francine Jay

  • The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up & Spark Joy by Marie

  • Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne and Lisa Ross

  • The Montessori Toddler by Simone Davies

Other tips not mentioned:

  • Rent or borrow when you can before you buy something! (Ex: power tools, library books, even clothing rental )

  • It is easiest to do my closet after I’ve gotten something new that I loooove—this helps because I can compare all my other things to the new item

-On Holidays start with your focus on the other senses first before you buy decor! Holiday candles/oils, food menu, music, etc.

  • One-in-one out! If I get a new toaster I’ll donate the old one

  • It is important once you’ve finished to put systems in place so that others can maintain what you’ve done—like labels and clear categories

This has been one of our favorite episodes to date! Mostly because we KNOW that mom's are notorious for multitasking and spending every waking second being as efficient as possible. This efficiency is so helpful... until it isn't. We often find our efforts to make life perfect get in the way of being present and enjoying the messy and mundane moments that make up a lifetime.

In this episode we discuss the book Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist (which you should read!). We talk about being intentional in our commitments and building a life that we love through connection, vulnerability, and reflection.

We all know that life doesn’t always go as planned, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In motherhood, both in the day-to-day and in the long term, life can throw surprises at us. These can often turn into our greatest joys when we fully embrace them.

As mothers, we feel passionate about capturing and documenting memories of our children! They seem to grow so quickly that we can't keep up with every new word, phase, or talent. We know that this is can feel like such a daunting task with quickly growing littles (and big kids too!) so we wanted to share some of the ways we have found to make documenting feel simplified and more realistic.

Paris mentions some of the apps and photo books she uses to make documenting easier. Brittany shares a new tradition her family is starting to record memories on a yearly basis. We discuss regular schedules we use for journaling.

Finally, Paris (our in-house photography expert) shares some easy tips for taking better pictures. These tips are for all moms snapping quick photos on their phones! We hope you feel encouraged to document your memories and be more thoughtful about when it is worth the extra time and effort for a picture and when to just enjoy the moment.

We are thrilled to invite our first guest onto Kindred Conversations: Kiley De Visser. Kiley is an amazing friend and it is a skill that she continually works on. We interview Kiley about what a good friend means to her and how to become that to others.  Cultivating good friendships is valuable in motherhood. Great friends can help you better enjoy your role as a mother, and even help you to be a better mother by offering insight, lending a hand or listening ear, and relieving some of the emotional burdens we carry.

In this episode we discuss what it means to be a good friend, tips for being intentional in friendships, and ways we’ve found to make new friends. This is our first ever official episode in Kindred Conversations! Thank you so much for listening! Holiday traditions can bring so much joy for the whole family but can also be the cause of stress for many mothers this time of year. How do you find a meaningful balance between blank space and scheduled activities?

We talk all about our favorite traditions that we had growing up and those we are looking forward to implementing in our own homes, as well as some things we are leaving behind. We discuss the things that we feel are "worth it" and the things we want to leave behind.

Giving yourself permission to leave behind traditions that are no longer serving your family is an important aspect of creating meaningful memories this time of year. We are hopeful this conversation will allow you to feel more present with your family this December as well as the many months to come.

In this episode we introduce ourselves and the purpose behind Kindred Conversations. Paris is mom to Miles (20 months) and married to Pierce Tews. Brittany is married to John Frye and they have two sons, Brooks and Wells (23 months and 3 months).

We decided to start this podcast because the sense of community we have felt as mothers has made all the difference in how we enjoy motherhood. Conversations with other moms not only encourage us to be better but also help support us in the difficulties we face. We want to add to your mothering community by providing a setting for you to feel like you are sitting in on a conversation with friends and fellow mothers. Our hope is that this podcast helps you to better enjoy your role and that it provides support during the hard moments as well!
