Acts 17:1-9

  1. Opposition to the Gospel in Thessalonica was not a fleeting problem.

  2. Opposition to the Gospel is expected, but we must be sure it is for the Gospel we are opposed, not for our own sinful behaviors or attitudes.

  3. Keep first things first. If you are a Christian, you have:

i.  1-2 people who don’t yet know Christ, whom God has uniquely placed in your life for YOU to encourage them, build them up, and show them what the Kingdom of God is like.

ii.  1-2 Christians whom God has uniquely put into your life for you to actively mentor and disciple them. It’s very possible that God wants them to mentor you right back, so don’t think you have to somehow know all the answers in those relationships.

iii.  And somewhere around half a dozen Christians with whom God is calling you to a ministry that is somewhat less intense, but no less important, a ministry of encouragement and fellowship.

Four questions every person must answer.

  1. What is real?

  2. Who is well off?

  3. Who is a good person?

  4. How do you become a good person?

They way we respond to life's challenges shows us our true answers to these questions. We must continually renew our minds with Scripture to align our answers to those of Jesus.

Test your reactions: are you acting out your earthly culture, or the culture of the Kingdom of the Heavens?

Interim Pastor Isaac Bickford

  1. The Story of Redemptive History

  2. Main themes of Acts: God's sovereignty, the Holy Spirit, Salvation

  3. Speaking in Tongues, the Last Days

  4. Jesus is Messiah: his miracles and resurrection

Followup Questions:

  1. Write down your “elevator speech” for Christ. This should be something you should be able to say smoothly and clearly in about 15 seconds. You should have this memorized verbatim. Peter’s Example: Acts 2:32 “This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.” Modern Example: I used to be selfish and full of anger. God healed me of that and gave me peace. I know Jesus is the Savior because he saved me from my sin of selfishness.

  2. Write down a fuller explanation of your witness of Christ as Savior. This is a follow-up to the elevator speech, if someone expresses interest in hearing more. You should be able to talk for a couple minutes (half a page written single spaced) about what God has done in your life that proves Jesus is Savior. Peter’s example: Acts 2:14-41.

2020-10-18

Interim Pastor Isaac Bickford

Key Points:

  1. There are different roles and levels of authority in the church. We need to clearly understand those roles in order to avoid being ensnared by false leaders.

  2. God is sovereign over all things. That is a primary theme of Acts, and is particularly evident in this passage. But God’s sovereignty does not provide any excuse for sin or reprieve of personal responsibility.

  3. The Holy Spirit is essential. He is the main character in the story of Acts, and he must be the main character in our church story as well.

Followup questions:

  1. Is there a particular person or thing that I have given greater importance to than I should, elevating it above the Bible?

  2. Am I making excuses for my sin?

  3. How can I be filled by the Holy Spirit in each activity of the week?

The Angry Prayer

Psalm 140

Isaac Bickford

How to pray an angry prayer:

  1. State briefly what you want God to do: almost always a prayer for deliverance from evil people.

  2. Understand and state clearly what those people do that is evil.

a.  What are their characteristics and impacts on society as a whole?

b.  What are their impacts on me?

  1. Specify your request for justice. It’s ok to vent your emotions in a real way.

  2. Remember God’s Holiness and that He is the source of deliverance.

  3. Turn your attention from anger about the evil of others; instead focus on what you can do to protect others from those evil people. Vs. 12 – David would have understood that he, as King of Israel, had a special responsibility to carry out God’s justice and protection of the needy.

  4. Give thanks, dwell in his presence. David doesn’t end with anger – he ends with praise and resting in God.
