The hardest part of hydroplane racing isn’t always the speed. Sometimes it’s deciding, in real time, what actually happened when eight boats hit the start, rooster tails erase sightlines, and a championship can swing on a single judgment call. In part 2 of the interview we sit down with Jonathan Abbott to get a clear, practical look at H1 Unlimited officiating from the chief referee’s chair and why “just call it on the water” is rarely as simple as it sounds.
If you care about H1 Unlimited hydroplane racing, boat racing rules, and how modern officiating balances fairness with speed, this conversation delivers. Subscribe, share this with a racing friend, and leave a review.

We pick up our conversation with Sam Cole as he explains how unlimited hydroplane racing broke onto national television and why that single shift changed sponsorship leverage for decades. We also get candid about the messy reality of exclusivity rules, hard business lessons from the Miller era, and the larger-than-life people who shaped the sport. A sport can look loud and effortless from the shoreline, but unlimited hydroplane racing only survives because someone is always doing the quiet work: calling cities, lining up sponsors, writing press releases, and convincing communities that a weekend on the water matters. That’s why this conversation with Sam Cole hits so hard. Sam isn’t just a longtime insider. He’s a former H1 Unlimited leader who has spent decades helping the sport find race sites, build partnerships, and recover when the future felt shaky.

If you care about hydroplane history, H1 Unlimited, sports promotion, and how sponsorship occurs, hit play. Don't forger to return next week for part two, share this with a racing friend, and leave a review so more people can find Roostertail Talk!

Spray hangs in the air, engines hammer the river, and a championship teeters on a half‑boat‑length margin. We crack open a restored broadcast from the 1964 APBA Gold Cup in Detroit and ride every surge, swerve, and split‑second decision that made this one of the most dramatic finishes in unlimited hydroplane history. This is all in thanks to Bob Van Den Akker who donated audio footage to the podcast!

Unfortunately, the first set of heats were not recorded, so we drop into Heat 2A with Chuck Thompson’s Tahoe Miss carving through rough water while Notre Dame’s Bill Muncey chases in hot pursuit!

From the Squire Shop highs and a path toward a championship to the uneasy birth of a Miller-backed program, the story tracks the shift from piston power to turbines. What ties everything together is the human calculus. Owners with leverage, marketers with favorites, crew chiefs who can translate risk into speed, each choice nudges fate. Tom talks retirement in ’86, but it wasn’t surrender; it was a clear-eyed call to stop making a boat do what it hates. And yet, when the phone rang, he returned on his terms, navigated fear in a capsule he never wanted but pushed through to a rivalry that still gives the sport goosebumps. If this ride grabbed you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more fans can find it.

A phone connection to Detroit’s past opens into a story of risk, grit, and craft. I sit down with legendary hydroplane driver Tom D’Eath to trace the path from a kid on a bike chasing the sound of engines to a champion whose name echoes on the Detroit River. Tom walks us through the early pull of the sport, including family boatyard days, outboard marathons, and the intoxicating feel of 135 hydros that smelled like alcohol and danger. If you love racing history, high-performance mindset, and the decisions that define a career, you’ll find plenty to savor here.

Charlie Grigg takes us behind the scenes of hydroplane racing sponsorship, revealing how what began as financial support for the U3 team evolved into profound friendships and becoming part of the racing family. The conversation with Charlie and co-host Mike Hall explores the human side of boat racing that fans rarely glimpse. Charlie shares how simple comforts like providing chairs and shade for the team created what they jokingly called their "palatial estate" at race sites. Through these small gestures and his growing curiosity about the technical aspects of the boats, Charlie transformed from sponsor to integral team member. Charlie's story reminds us that beyond the roostertails and racing, it's the relationships that make this sport truly extraordinary.

Welcome to episode 90! Fifty-six years ago the inaugural unlimited hydroplane Atomic Cup was held in Tri-Cities, Wa.  With a week and a half to the 2022 Columbia Cup we look back to the first race held on the Columbia River through the voices of Jim Latimer and Mick Shutt.  Straight out of High School Jim and Mick worked as radio correspondents to the Wenatchee radio station KMEL in 66/67/68. Listen to their experiences of those first Atomic Cups (Columbia Cups) while we swap memories of favorite Columbia Cups of yesteryear. Enjoy!

Welcome to episode eighty of Roostertail Talk.  Shortly after the Columbia Cup I talked with 2 brothers that do a lot of behind the scene work for H1, Jared and Tait Meyer.  These brothers have worked very hard at brining us a bigger and better streaming service for H1.  We ended up talking close to 2 hours, so once again I am splitting the interview up into 3 parts (trilogy!). In part 3 Jared and Tait talk a bit about what goes on in H1 during the offseason as well as the unparallel level of competition that is currently in the sport.  Enjoy!

Missing hydroplane racing this summer? Yeah, us too! For us at Roostertail Talk it isn't quite summer without hydroplane racing.  Due to the covid-19 crisis in the world most (just about all) racing has been cancelled this summer.  For those of us in the Pacific Northwest, the height of summer always fell in that magical week between the Columbia Cup and Seafair.  With both of those races cancelled there is a big void in the summer in the state of Washington.  Join us as we share some favorite moments in Columbia Cups and Seafair Regattas in years past.  I share submissions from fans, my personal favorite memories, and break down the top 5 iconic moments at each race.

Welcome to the nineteenth episode of "Roostertail Talk".  Last December the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum rented out the Cinerama in Seattle to host a private showing of the Madison Movie.  2019 marked 20 years since production ended on the movie. A lot of people came together from around the country to get the boats on the water for the months of filming; needless to say this was not an easy feat. The hundreds of people at the theater got a chance to see the movie one last time on the big screen, then afterwards a panel of David Williams, Ken Muscatel, Mitch and Mark Evans, Jerry Hopp, Don Mock, Karen Senior as well as a few more talked to the crowd and took questions at the end. Luckily I had my recorder on hand and am now able to share their stories with you.  Enjoy!

I get a chance to sit down and talk with Jeff Bernard as he rejoins the Unlimited field after a few years absence.  We talk about his racing career and his addition to the Oberto team.  I also go into more details of the Columbia Cup and preview the 10 boat field.  Do your predictions of the race line up with mine? Tune in to find out.  Enjoy!

Welcome to the third episode of "Roostertail Talk". In this episode I talk with Larry Oberto about hydroplanes, his family, the Oberto legacy, car racing and much more.  Larry is a Seattle native and with his family and the "Oberto Company", they have made huge contributions to hydroplane racing for over 44 years.  His family is helping to keep the tradition alive as the "Oberto Specialty Meats Company" is sponsoring Miss Madison's #2 hull this year for the western portion of the H1 series. Enjoy!

Welcome to the second episode of "Roostertail Talk". This is a bonus minisode (mini podcast episode) in which I will answer some listener questions, feature stories of hydroplane past from different listeners and define a hydroplane terminology. This is a bonus episode, so it will be shorter then a normal length episode. Enjoy!
