Lord Dannatt, former head of the British Army, says there are a number of both regional and wider global concerns surrounding Iran's possible retaliation against Israel. He suggests that although it isn't in Tehran's interests to get into a "major spat" with Israel, Iran does sponsor Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthi rebels in Yemen, "they can dial it up, or dial it down."
Russia, Germany and Britain on Thursday urged countries in the Middle East to show restraint and Israel said it was preparing to "meet all its security needs" in a region on edge over an Iranian threat to strike Israel.
The German airline Lufthansa, one of only two Western carriers flying to Tehran, extended a suspension of its flights to the Iranian capital and Russia warned against travel to the Middle East.
Iran has vowed revenge for the April 1 airstrike on its embassy compound in Damascus that killed a top Iranian general and six other Iranian military officers, ratcheting up tension in a region already strained by the Gaza war.

It comes after a review said children have been let down by a lack of research and "remarkably weak" evidence on medical interventions in gender care.
The Cass Review, published on Wednesday by paediatrician Dr Hilary Cass, calls for gender services for young people to match the standards of other NHS care.
She says the "toxicity" of the debate around gender meant professionals were "afraid" to openly discuss their views.
NHS England says it has already made significant progress in making changes.
The Cass Review, which looked at gender identity services for under-18s, was commissioned by NHS England in 2020 after a sharp rise in the number of patients referred to the NHS who were questioning their gender.

The Government has come under increased pressure in recent days to publish the advice it has been given following an attack which killed seven aid workers in Gaza, including three Britons.

Three former Supreme Court justices, including Lady Hale and Lord Sumption, have joined more than 600 legal experts in urging the UK government to halt weapons sales to Israel. They argue that continuing to sell weapons would make the UK complicit in grave breaches of international law, including potential violations of the genocide convention.
In a heated discussion Steve Hedley and Julia Hartley-Brewer clash over the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the accusations of genocide. Faith leaders including the Archbishop of Canterbury have backed proposals for a major shake-up of Britain’s “broken” asylum system, on the same day the Government’s Rwanda Bill returns to the Lords for a parliamentary showdown.
Migrants would be eligible to work in the UK after six months of waiting for an asylum decision and given free English language education on day one after arrival in the country under the recommendations.
The proposals are made in a report by the independent Commission on the Integration of Refugees, which also calls for the reinstatement of a refugees minister in Government.
The Most Rev Justin Welby, who in Parliament’s upper chamber has been a leading critic of Government legislation aimed at deporting some asylum seekers to Rwanda, is among religious figures supporting the recommendations.

Rishi Sunak is facing calls to publicly address the fallout from remarks made by MP Lee Anderson after an Islamophobia row deepened on Sunday.
The former deputy chairman lost the Conservative whip after failing to apologise for claiming “Islamists” had “got control” of Sadiq Khan.
But critics including the London mayor and Tory peer Baroness Warsi have hit out at the Prime Minister for failing to explicitly condemn the comments.
Oliver Dowden earlier declined to say whether Mr Anderson’s words were racist and left the door open for a possible return to the party, prompting accusations that the remarks were not being taken seriously enough.

Former Armed Forces Minister Lord Robathan says Britain’s military capabilities are “pathetic”.
It comes as the head of the Army said Britain should “train and equip” a “citizen army” to ready the country for a potential land war.
But General Sir Patrick Sanders, the outgoing Chief of the General Staff (CGS), said even that would be “not enough” as he pointed to allies in eastern and northern Europe “laying the foundations for national mobilisation”.
In a speech on Wednesday, the military top brass said increasing Army numbers in preparation for a potential conflict would need to be a “whole-of-nation undertaking”.
The comments are being read as a warning that British men and women should be ready for a call-up to the armed forces if NATO goes to war with Russia.

Home Secretary James Cleverly told the Commons: “We will stop immigration undercutting the salary of British workers. We will increase the skilled worker earnings threshold by a third, to £38,700 from next spring in line with the median full-term wage for those kinds of jobs.
“Those coming on health and social care visa routes will be exempt so we can continue to bring in the healthcare workers on which our care sector and NHS rely.
“Thirdly, we will scrap cut-price shortage labour from overseas by ending the 20% going-rate salary discount for shortage occupations and reforming the shortage occupation list.
“I have asked the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the occupations on this list because of our new higher-skilled worker salary thresholds, and we will create a new immigration salary list with a reduced number of occupations in co-ordination with the MAC.”

Journalist Douglas Murray has entered Gaza with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) along the same route used by Hamas when it invaded Israel on October 7th.
He was able to get to within one kilometre of the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where Israeli forces continue to search for tunnels that Hamas fighters may have withdrawn to, perhaps with Israeli hostages.
This hospital has been described as the command centre of Hamas operations, making it a focus of Israel's military offensive.
Speaking to TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer, he said: "It is one of the main centres of the fighting and you can see that everywhere. The minute you get past the fence, you can see the villages, there's one place called Zeitoun where there's very considerable firefights and explosions.

The Supreme Court ruled Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda asylum policy is unlawful.
President of the Supreme Court Lord Reed said there would be a risk of genuine asylum seekers being returned by Rwanda to the home country they fled from.
Previously, the policy was ruled unlawful in a court of appeal because the east African nation was deemed unsafe, leading the government to push the policy to the highest court in the UK.
