Corey, who had developed a close friendship with Darvin , who was also featured on episode 21 of The Foundation, and decided that the legacy that Darvin started should not die with him. Corey kept the legacy running as he was able to generate enough money through the selling of Darvin's Playmakers' brand and donating 100% of the proceeds into a scholarship fund for kids involved with the Playmaker Athletics. The Book Scholarship event will be held on June 11th, 2022 at Caldwater Park from 2pm-5pm! Peace Family! Welcome back to another episode of The Foundation Podcast! This episode features a conversation with owner of Basketball Spotlight LLC, Mike Melton as he shares an incredible story of how he built a Foundation in sobriety by conquering an alcohol addiction that nearly claimed his life. Melton is a product of Trenton, NJ and a graduate of Kean University who began an early career teaching shortly after graduation. Melton begins the interview by explaining how he was introduced to alcohol during his freshman year of college and how his alcoholism began to progress in his early years of teaching unbeknownst to him. Melton even shares a story about flipping his vehicle in a car crash and how he took it as a sign that he was invincible and should keep drinking.  Melton then shifts the conversation referring to the discovery of his wife's murder as "the day my life turned upside down". Melton's story is also incredibly compounded not only by the fact that his wife was murdered and he was the one who found her, but to add insult to injury he was named as the number one suspect! During years of suspicion not only from the police and prosecutors but from family, friends, employers, and just about anyone else who came in contact with Melton around this time. Melton was even forced to resign from his teaching position as the school diagnosed him with PTSD which precluded him from continuing his educational career. These circumstances combined to exacerbate Melton's alcoholism as he leaned on the bottle for a crutch, understandably so in a very tough time in life. The first part of the two part episode ends with Melton sharing a story of how his drinking got so progressive after the trial for his wife, that on one occasion Melton was so inebriated, he thought his friend was an actual demon. Melton even discusses the complications of rehab as he shares a story about how upon leaving rehab to go to a strip club and have a drink the same night. This is when Melton drops to his knees and begs God to help him find a way out, and vows to change his life. On part two of this episode, we learn how Melton navigated the journey back to sobriety. Melton was incredibly open and candid about his experience which we thank him immensely for. We all may need a helping hand at some point without judgement or sympathy, but sometimes empathy can do the trick. See if there is any way you may be able to relate to Melton's story of if there are some building blocks you can take to help you along your journey as well. As always, Keep Building Family!

Welcome back to the Foundation Podcast! This week, we have the first episode of a two part series that will cover the life of Red Bank, New Jersey native, and International Basketball star, Taqwa Pinero (Formely known as Taquan Dean. Pinero played over 13 years overseas, enjoying an incredibly successful career following his legendary career at the University of Louisville where he led his team to the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2003 and finished as the school's all time three point scoring champion. This interview was conducted in May, but due to this being one of the most overwhemingly powerful story of perseverance I have personally heard. With the current pandemic and the explosion of depresssion and desperation due to Co-Vid and the extreme unpredictability of 2020, this story couldn't have been released at a better time as Pinero lays out a roadmap on how to overcome some of the most traumatic experiences we could only imagine.

Pinero's journey starts off with the story of how his mother died in his arms when he was 6. This was followed by his grandmother, who then died of cancer a year after his mother when he was 7. Then his grandfather died a year after that when he was 8. Which left him with his sister who ran away from home when he was 9 years old. This left a young Pinero with a ton of emotions to process without any guidance or assistance on how to do it. Pinero then goes on to chronicle the challenges he had growing up young in Red Bank which included his aunt refusing to support his career aspirations, even going as far as to hinder his progress by refusing to let him play sports, or transfer schools in order to play.

Pinero then talks about the challenges he had in high school, including pretty much being benched his freshman year even though he was ranked as one of the top 5 players in his class in the nation. This actually caused him to transfer to another high school where he was not accepted despite his talent and character. Pinero then goes in to the experiences he had playing ball in high school which includes becoming good friends with NBA greats such as Carmelo at basketball camps, and challenging veterans like JJ Redick. P Pinero also emphasizes the role other people such as mentors and prinicpals helped him along the way. He always periodically reminds listeners of how his childhood affected everything throughout his life. This interview is perfect for anyone feeling depressed or unsure of there life's purpose or how to overcome in credibly painful loss. This is only part one as the next part will cover his career at louisville, experiencing a entire different world overseas, and finding out two HUGE SECRETS that had been kept from him his entire life. Stay tuned for part two and see if there are any tools you can take from part 1 of Taqwa's journey to help build to your foundation. Until next time, keep building family! Peace!

Peace Family! On episode 15 of the Foundation Podcast, we catch up with Ulysses Youngblood who is currently a Professor teaching Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as Cannabis Education at Clark University, located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Ulysses provides us first, with a little background about himself and then how he built his professional and business career in the cannabis industry. Ulysses' story is packed with instances where he had to overcome adversity beginning early as a child in school with multiple learning disabilities such as dyslexia, selective hearing, and ADHD.  The struggles didn't end there as Ulysses graduated from high school with a 6th Grade reading level. Ulysses did make it to college, but unfortunately was kicked out of school after school police detected "an aroma" of marijuana in his dorm. This began a tumultuous 7 college journey (yes, he actually attended 7 different colleges) ultimately culminating in him achieving a MBA in Business from Northeastern University in Boston. Ulysses at the same time, also co-founded a social impact Cannabis company called Major Bloom which is an organization focused on introducing more economic empowerment of minorities in the Cannabis industry. Ulysses provides detailed instructions on how to overcome both the educational and social challenges many young people face everyday and how to give back. He also lays out the blueprints for becoming a professor as well as getting involved in the Cannabis industry and  provides a lot of information about the Cannabis industry you may not be aware of. My favorite theme of the interview was the unrelenting spirit of Ulysses evidenced by all the adversity he overcame and the fact that he is so positive and genuinely empathic today. Listen to Ulysses' story and see if there are any told you could use to build your foundation. As always, until next time, Keep Building Family! Peace!

Evans is a chef who has over a decade of experience in the kitchen which includes creating his very own signature spice brand called "Majik Dust",  appearing on food various shows, spending nearly two years gaining experience  at The Food Network, and also meeting the likes of world renowned Chef Bobby Flay. Evans uses his superior culinary expertise supplemented by his business acumen to give listeners a map on how to build in the food industry as well as life in general. Evans did a great job of connecting the concepts he was talking about to real life applications such as displaying how he attracts more customers by choosing to incorporate more cuisine styles as opposed to specialization. This is just one example but see if there is any way you may be able to add any of tools dropped by Evans to your toolbox in order to keep building your foundation. Peace Family, This week on the foundation we sit down with the founder of the U.G.L.Y. (Unity Gathers the Lost Youth) which is one of the fastest growing and most popular brands in New Jersey. His clothes have been worn by stars such as the A$AP Mob and featured in the world famous XXL magazine. Tajh begins the interview with a description of his childhood which included him moving around a lot as a young man which Tajh used to his advantage creating an expansive network which would come in handy later. Tajh then shares with us the challenges he faced as a young African American student in predominantly white school. Tajh then talks about his battle against conformity which included listening to rock music, skateboarding, and wearing skinny jeans well before they were socially acceptable. This struggle with conformity eventually led Tajh to starting his first clothing line in college which he explains fell through because of a sour business relationship. Tajh then explains to us how he came up with the concept of his current clothing line U.G.L.Y (Unity Gathers the Lost Youth) and the toughest challenges to face when running a business. This was one of my favorite interviews because of the authenticity of Tajh as he shares stories of personal battles like his lifelong battle to preserve his autonomy and uniqueness while also being connected to so many people. Tajh also provides us the blue print of starting and successfully managing a business from the way he releases products, to creating an expansive network, and staying true too yourself. See if there is anything you may be able to use to build a foundation for you as well! Lets build family. Peace!
