Comparison has been said to be the thief of joy. So WHY do we keep doing it?

In this day and age of the perfectly curated Instagram feed, it’s hard to turn off our need to compare ourselves. In fact, it’s normal to want to know where we fit in the world. However, it can quickly turn into toxic behaviour that leaves us feeling like we’re massively flawed…when in fact we’re simply human.

In this bite-sized episode, we’re sharing our own real-life experiences with “Comparison-itis”; how it made us feel, and how you can check yourself before you wreck yourself.

You know that mean voice inside your head that says “You suck. You never do it right. Why can’t you do things more like so and so down the street?!"?

Yeah, that’s your inner critic and it can make some painful statements and make you feel pretty crappy on the daily.

But what if there was a way to work with your inner critic rather than against it?

I sat down with Sarah Houy, licensed professional counselor to talk about why our inner critic comes out to play and the strategies we can use to transform it from harmful to helpful. Stick with us here….you’ll see how it all comes together.

Here’s what we’re talking about in this episode: -The current issues that Sarah is seeing in her therapy practice after the pandemic.

-What the inner critic voice can actually sound like in real life.

-The model of therapy that Sarah uses and teaches (Internal Family Systems or IFS) and how it shapes the way she views her own inner critic.

-How Sarah recommends we nurture and really listen to this inner voice in order to move through the discomfort.

-You’ll hear me (Kim) go through this exercise in real-time with Sarah as well. I get pretty real about some of the things that I’m going through.

-The specific tools and strategies that you can use to work through a difficult moment.

Guest Bio Sarah Houy, Co-Founder & CEO of Sentur

‍M.A., L.P.C., R.Y.T., B.C.N. Certified EMDR Clinician | Certified IFS Practitioner

A Colorado-native licensed professional counselor, Sarah has been working for over a decade with people who have experienced trauma across the lifespan, opening the doors for them to heal and to create a life that’s exciting to get up for every day.

Having had a challenging journey herself, she’s a strong believer that while many traumas are not our fault, healing is our responsibility.

Sarah loves thinking about how to bring things together to impact the rate at which healing happens and help people keep the momentum they get during therapy sessions.

I (Kim) have wanted to share the topic of Intuitive Eating since we started the show.

Intuitive Eating was a huge part of my Eating disorder recovery and I feel compelled to share it with anyone and everyone who will listen. It just makes so much sense and it has allowed me to finally feel free from the grips of food obsession and calorie counting. It needs to be shared.

I knew Suzanne Dietrich would be the perfect person to help me bring this conversation to you since she’s devoted her career to helping people heal from weight stigma in our “thin obsessed world. She is continuously learning about intuitive eating, eating disorder recovery, gut health, and how the social determinants of health intermingle with these areas.

How it started and the tools that she used to recover. * What does an Intuitive Eater look like? * The 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating * What it means to reject the diet mentality * Intuitive eating is not an overnight process and it’s ok if it’s not a linear one too.

Resources we talk about: * The 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating * Intuitive Eating 4th Edition, Evelyne Tribole & Elyse Resch * Intuitive Eating Workbook, Evelyne Tribole & Elyse Resch * National Eating Disorders Information Centre * Anti-Diet, Christy Harrison * Food Psych Podcast - Christy Harrison * Kristen Neff’s work on Self-compassion

While we jump into a new season, everyone and their dog is itching to get back into fitness. As a trainer...I am a big fan!

And since spring is the season of change, perhaps it’s time to consider tweaking a few things in your fitness routine.

Sometimes something that worked for you 5 years ago may not be working for you anymore. Or perhaps you’re getting injured and need to make some changes to protect your bod.

Either way, change can be good. Here are a few ways to shake up your Spring Fitness Routine so YOU can feel stronger and fitter right now.

Here’s what we’re talking about in this episode:

-The simple tweaks you can make to your fitness routine to help you increase your strength and decrease injury.

-Why building and maintaining muscle is SOOOOO important (and also awesome.)

-The Muscle group that I (Kim) really really really wants you to remember in your workout routine.

-How to make sure your Home Workout routine is balanced and that you’re not overtraining.

  • Why I went to physio for my foot and ended up with breathing exercises and butt exercises. The body is all so connected!

-While I get super excited about talking about HOW to train your body in a balanced way, there is a tremendous amount of value in simply moving your body. It’s ok to stray from the routine and shake it up OR even take time off.

Move in a way that feels good to you! If you’re feeling burnt out, find a way to make it fun again.

We're coming close to a year of living through a global pandemic, and we don't know about you but things are starting to feel heavy again. We feel tired... tired of saying I miss you... and tired of saying, "when things go back to normal".

This is our new normal in this season. And we need to honor that.

So for today Kim and Andrea sit down to talk about creating bliss when times get tough. We share some of the strategies we’ve been using, what we’re planning and how we’re prioritizing celebrating, and daydreaming again.

It doesn't have to be big, but it is important to have something to look forward to and to celebrate the small things.

Here’s what we’re talking about in this episode:

  • We’re feeling a lot of sadness and grief over the things we’ve missed out on. It’s normal to feel this way and it sucks. Let’s just be real.
  • We can still create some really great moments of joy or celebration even though it may look very different.
  • It can feel really good to have something on the calendar to look forward to. Make plans even if they’re small
  • Dreaming about vacations...it's good for the soul. We go down a bit of a vacation dreaming rabbit hole.

After working through several years of post-concussion syndrome, I feel compelled to share my story and the resources that helped me recover. Honestly, it was HARD, and if I can help anyone lighten the load of their recovery...I’m gonna do that.

Molly Parker is one of those incredible resources and sources of inspiration that helped me get through.

I found Molly Parker’s Instagram account and it made me feel so incredibly seen and validated. Molly shares her own incredible story of overcoming a concussion as well as simple tools and resources for anyone who is struggling. Seriously, this woman is a warrior!

Whether you’ve been there, are going through this, or know someone who is, this show will help you understand how to help yourself or your loved one to work through a challenging time.

What we cover:

  • Both Kim and Molly share their own concussion stories and experiences. The physical symptoms, all the emotions, you name it, they cover it.
  • MRI’s do NOT show concussions.
  • The current treatment protocol for Concussions (it is no longer “just go to bed”)
  • How recovery can vary from one individual to the next.
  • What to say and what NOT to say to someone who is struggling with a concussion.
  • The importance of validation with an injury that is invisible. We all just want to be seen.

5 Ways to Navigate the Holiday Stress with Kim

Show Description:

The holidays...man they can be stressful!

Add in a little global pandemic and what may likely be a virtual celebration for so many of us and you’ve got a recipe for awkward.

Kim gets the awkward like no other human being and has 5 simple tips to help you move through the holiday season feeling pretty awesome...even in 2020!

Here’s what we’re talking about in this episode:

  • 5 tips to feel your absolute best during the holidays
  • Kim talks about a few holiday seasons where she absolutely did NOT feel her best and reveals some of the practices she uses to turn it around.
  • It’s not perfect but when you continue to practice these habits, it will come together.
  • The importance of finding joy every day...even the smallest things matter.
  • Home Alone 2 never gets old. It brought my family a ton of joy on a gloomy day.
  • The pressure that you may be feeling at the holidays may have to do with some unrealistic expectations. Who decided the Elf needs to move every night? Or that you even need to have an elf? Seriously...re-think what really matters to you!
  • Stay in your lane. If you love to make handmade gifts, do it. If you hate it and it stresses you out, maybe you shop online and support a local biz instead.
  • Boundaries. Set some. That is all. But seriously, I’m covering what that actually looks like in the 2020 Holiday season.
  • Self-care, even the smallest things is always a good idea.
  • The 5th tip is probably the best one yet it’s the hardest for me. It may surprise you but I think it’s worth trying (for you and ME ) this year.

Resources we talk about:

The Gift of Lights at Bingemans- it brought me so much joy in a year where the holidays are anything but normal.

Guys...I’m 40! What up?

In this episode, I’m sitting down with my good pal Steph to dish about what it really feels like to turn 40. Honestly, getting older is strange, especially when you still feel 24...but you’re not.

We poured a glass of cheap rose and hit record on this super REAL chat between friends about the confidence that comes with getting older, observations on aging in the media (when you’re somewhere between Taylor Swift and Diane Keaton), and re framing our thoughts around aging. It can actually be pretty awesome.

Here’s what we’re talking about in this episode:

  • The moment where Steph had a mild freak out about her 40 year old metabolism
  • The beautiful thing about getting older (confidence man...so much more confidence)
  • What’s up with the media representation of women? We’re not Taylor Swift but we’re also not Diane Keaton. Someone please see us!
  • What to do when it’s time to stop shopping in the youth department but you’re not ready for pantsuits.
  • Things you think about when you’re 40 that you never thought about when you’re 20 (ie. longevity, good shoes, skincare, and sun hats.)
  • Steph’s very in-depth research study on 40 year old women (Thank you to those 3 friends that helped out!)
  • Getting older is NOT a death sentence. In fact, it’s the opposite. It gets better every year.

Resources we talk about:

Steph LOVES Cocoon Apothecary Skin care and they’re a local biz in our community. Check them out! https://cocoonapothecary.ca/
