Activist Ryan Dowling lost his life to Ryan Carson in New York City, and the political right jumped in with obvious political hypocrisy to use this tragedy to forward their false narrative about crime statistics in New York City.
At that time, murd*r rate in NYC was down 11% from last year, and overall crime was down 5%.
Facts and statistics show that the 25 "Red States" that voted for Donald Trump in the last Presidential Election have higher crime rates than the 25 "Blue States" that voted for President Joe Biden.

An internal investigation of Kenosha, Wisconsin police officers is underway. Activists in Kenosha, Wisconsin are speaking out after a video that was shared on social media appears to show a Kenosha police officer repeatedly striking a black man the officer wrongly thought was involved in a serious hit-and-run crash.
Police were told that the suspects of the hit-and-run crash were in a nearby restaurant. When officers entered the premises, police say a staff member told them that 'suspicious people' with a baby were dining in the restaurant.
The gentleman who was viciously victimized by these officers was sitting in the restaurant while peacefully eating with his wife and infant child.
In the video, we see officers mobbing the man while he is holding his baby. The baby falls out of his arms or is taken out of his arms, and an officer appears to immediately punch the innocent victim in or about the head eight times. When I play the video, you will hear the thud of each punch.
Police would later find their suspects inside a bathroom of a restaurant. Not only did they attack an innocent man, but they also enhanced their mistake and charged the man and his wife with obstruction, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

We returned from our family vacation a few days ago. I have lived here in Norway for 21 years now, and I don't get home to my home State of Ohio often enough. Every time I go back, I am made aware of how much things have changed in the USA. There is always a little more construction that has taken away some of the beautiful local nature, for example. The political landscape has changed and moved into an existence that is uglier, more paranoid, more aggressive, and more exclusionary.
The other side of that coin, though, is this: I also saw many reminders of what is still beautiful about the people and places in America, and more specifically, all the beauty of the places and people back home in my area of rural and suburban Ohio. For example, I was often charmed by the laughter-filled, short conversations with strangers while shopping or while walking around. The wildlife was just as amazing as I remember it to have been during my childhood.
Of course, my family is still there back home. I enjoyed sitting back and watching my kids get to know family members with whom they previously had only known through telephone conversations.
Beautiful...

How do you mentor your sons? There are many ways. I want to share one form of mentoring with you.
As I have experienced for over forty years, physical training is an excellent path to improved physical, emotional, and mental health.
The process of properly training my body has brought me
- self-discipline
- humility
- an inspiration to erase limitations
- awareness of how important it is to set realistic goals
Of course, all that gym time and all of the accomplishments while competing in bodybuilding and powerlifting have given me above-average physical strength.
More importantly, I have incorporated those physical accomplishments into mental and emotional strengthening that I readily apply to my day-to-day life.
The process has made me a better father, husband, artist, and friend, and I want a similar opportunity for my son as well.
He is ready, and so we have been training together for these past two weeks.
For my son, the lessons flow as his sweat flows. When we train, I facilitate the presentation of lessons about goals, limits, fortitude, expectations, humility, and much more.
Training with my son has put me on my game like I haven’t been in a while. I’m his example, and as I teach him in my gym, I am reinforcing things for myself.

When it comes to taxes, did you know that American citizens who live abroad have to file taxes in their country of residence AND the IRS wants them to also file taxes in the USA? This is called CITIZEN-BASED TAXATION, and the USA is one of only two nations that tax their citizens in this way. Many of these American Citizens who live abroad own no property or assets in the United States, and have no connection to the USA other than their citizenship.
How about RESIDENCY-BASED TAXATION?
The non-profit organization American Citizens Abroad has done some research on this taxation issue, and Marylouise Serrato speaks with me about it in this episode.

Now that we have Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday in the United States, I present the following question: Do black Americans suffer from a so-called Victim Mentality, or does American history show that black Americans are capable navigators of what I call a "Victim Reality". Which is the most true and relevant representation of black America today?
I say "Happy Juneteenth" to you all, but I talk about how, in the recognition of Juneteenth as an official Federal Holiday, America seems to have just stepped over or walked past other important issues that America needs to take care of in the interest of true equality for black Americans.
I saw a video from The Glenn Show where Glenn Loury and John McWhorter were discussing the "Infantilization of Blackness" and their opinions that black Americans suffer from a victim mentality. My pushback to that is made clear in this episode. I point out a few facts:

Black American success in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1865-1921 (and many other locations/areas of the United States at that time) shows the resilience of the former slaves and free black Americans, and their refusal to be burdened with a victim mentality.

Black American resilience during the Jim Crow years is yet another example of a broad refusal of the social policies of the time, and is hardly an example of a universal victim mentality for those black Americans.

Current impressive advances in the level of education among black Americans also points toward a free-thinking and positive mindset. (Sources are cited in the podcast episode)
A victim mentality INCAPACITATES and SUBJUGATES. I see EMPOWERMENT and INNOVATION in the greater Black Community in the USA. Of course we have institutional/systemic racism and policies such as redlining that are suppressing advancement, freedom and liberty for a large portion of black Americans, and I discuss this and its influence in this episode.

Everyone sees the heated exchanges that occur daily on social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook. There is often very little actual learning through sharing of ideas that occurs during those "discussions", and most often, people are misunderstood or their ideas are misinterpreted. We also see that legitimate, non-hostile disagreement is met with harshness, sarcasm and even threats of violence.
Robert Gillan and I had a few discussions on social media a few years back, and for the most part, we disagreed on the topics at hand. We recently talked about those disagreements after I became aware of some interesting discussions that Robert was having on YouTube, and I came to find out that Robert had a different recollection than I did concerning those disagreements. "No problem", I thought. "Let's talk about it." We did just that over the phone right before this episode, and here is the tail end of it all. I feel that if we had had a face to face/eye to eye conversation back then like we have on this episode of The Comin' Home Podcast With John Alan, then the misunderstandings would have been much less than they were. Robert and I still disagree on a few things, such as my credentials or "worthiness" to be profiled in the media, and that becomes apparent in our discussion here, as you will see.
In spite of any disagreements that Robert and I have, I believe that our discussion during this episode displays the positive point that black American men are not all the same. We can have the same goals, but our backgrounds and skill sets can and do differ, and we do not have to agree on the methods that are used to succeed on the path to reaching our goals.

Is it possible to be a successful farmer in an urban environment, (in this case Indianapolis, Indiana)? You bet it is! Mario Vitalis is living proof of that. I truly enjoyed this conversation in which Mario tells the story of his family's rise from their struggles as sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South, and forward in time to when his grandfather inspired him to not give up on his dream of becoming an urban farmer. Mario's story of his requirement to go "above and beyond" what should have been necessary in order to get financing from the USDA Farm Services Agency will inspire anyone who knows what it is like to dream and put in the work that one must do in order to live that dream and be successful.

Military service, religious faith, mental fortitude, physical and mental strength are the keys to Major Donny Bigham's success over the past three decades. In this episode, I talk with him about our shared experiences as champion powerlifters, our brotherhood as United States Marines, his service in the Afghanistan and Iraq and how he has dealt with trauma. Donny Bigham is a retired Major after 27 years of Service. He served as the first ever Strength and Conditioning Coach in the Uniform for the US Army, was instrumental in changing the US Army Physical Fitness test after almost 40 years to the Army Combat Fitness test, and led the effort designing the Occupational Performance Assessment Test (OPAT) for initial screening of potential recruits. He also designed the Tactical Athlete Performance Center at Fort Jackson and re-wrote the Master Fitness Trainer curriculum to ensure all Warriors are successful in all Tactical Tasks! Donny served as the Head Strength Coach for the Tactical Athlete Performance Center (TAP-C) and Chief of Human Performance office at Fort Benning, GA.
The TAP-C is the first ever Performance Center that trains over 600 Soldiers daily within a Combat Battalion that was designed under Major Bigham’s tenure. He also designed the Tactical Athlete Performance Assessment (TAP-A) at the Army Wellness Center to truly test baseline strength for the tactical athlete necessary to move under loads over 30% of their body weights.
Major Donny Bigham was the Army Male Athlete of the Year in 2016 and 2017 NSCA TSAC-F facilitator (Strength Coach) of the Year, and he is also a two-time raw world master’s powerlifting champion with the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and (IOC), had the Squat WR in the IPF and has the WR Squat, Deadlift and Total in the IPL. Major Bigham is a 4x national champion and a 5x member of Team USA Powerlifting.
He served in every position in an Infantry Rifle Company (Enlisted and Officer) and deployed to Bosnia, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Yemen (45 months). Military Awards and Schools: Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Ranger, Airborne, Air Assault, Combat Infantry Badge and Expert infantryman Badge.
Here are some other areas where Major Donny Bigham has served outside of the uniform: Youth Pastor, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, High School Teacher (Math & Science), Head Varsity Baseball Coach and Owner of OneTimePowerlifting L.L.C.

Are you following the trial concerning the death of George Floyd? Many people all over the world are following this case, and Snoopy and I share a few thoughts. No matter where you stand on the case concerning the death of George Floyd, can we agree that nine minutes and twenty nine seconds is way too long for an officer to restrict a man's breathing?
It's been a tough and different kind of life these past thirteen months, and today Snoopy and I talk about the ways in which people have struggled in different ways over this difficult past year, and what the respective governments in the USA and Norway can and should do for their citizens. Is Norway really as good as the image that they portray? Is the USA as bad off as what people outside of the nation's borders think?
I always have the most fun with my podcast when I have Snoopy here as my guest. I had a great time doing this episode today, even though her Norwegian practicality make it very hard for me to make jokes at her expense. I tried. She did compliment me on my coolness as I rock a cowboy hat and the beginnings of a western goatee in the studio today. I wore it in tribute to Bass Reeves, the original and only true Lone Ranger. I also give a nod to American standup comedian Godfrey, who has created a very interesting black cowboy character and features that character regularly on his Instagram page. People who have been incarcerated are very few and far between, and those who have been incarcerated in both the USA and Norway are even fewer. Watch and listen as Thomas Erik Olsen tells me his story of dual citizenship (USA and Norway), issues with violence and temper control which led to his first incarceration in Florida, and on to his return to Norway and eventual incarceration and freedom in Norway.

I take at least ten minutes of my day and reserve it for myself. It’s my time for silence, meditation, prayer and non-thinking.
Having so many thoughts and ideas can be overwhelming and frustrating.
I suggest using a journal or other method of documentation so that your ideas and plans don’t fade into nothingness. If you've thought about something for more than a fleeting moment, then it’s likely an idea that is worth seeing the light of day. Document these thought and inspirations, and put them into actionable development when the time is right.
I’m still physically messed up since neck surgery two weeks ago, and incapable of much. I am, however capable of planning and documentation, so that’s what I’m doing. Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, I have a few projects that are coming to life now in these days of almost no physical activity on my part. I'll get more into these projects with you on upcoming podcast episodes.

Well, after a hasty surgery on my neck, I am far from on my feet, but I did manage to drag myself to the mic and check in with you good people. I talk about my hospital experience, and the last thing that I heard the anesthesiologist say before I was knocked out.
I am battered, but not broken. I am down but not out. For me, it is very important to remember that setting and achieving goals teaches perseverance through adversity. I will "get my life back", as I put it in this episode.

In late February 2020, Snoopy wanted us to buy a home in the same coastal Georgia neighborhood where Ahmaud Arbery was murdered. It was a bitter taste of the reality of racism in the USA, and it was heartbreaking to think over the fact that parts of my own country are not safe for my family. It also worried me that, after almost twenty years of living in Norway, I could unwittingly move my family to a home in the middle of "Klan Country". Recently, we found another potential home in coastal North Carolina. I asked my contacts about the "racial situation" in that area, and I talk about their responses during this episode. Black Americans had the Green Book from 1936 until 1966, which mapped out the areas where they were safe or unsafe when traveling. Today, I have Snoopy on the mic as my guest, and she's pulled up to my studio desk with some fake Norwegian Gløgg. The one hundred year old sheepskin that she wants to use for our bedsheet, however, is quite real. True story!

We talk about Snoopy's rather rough introduction to American job life back in the day when she was a new Norwegian immigrant to the USA. For her first job there, she worked at a health clinic in a Chicago-area ghetto. She quit after about a week. Her her next job was at a funeral home. Listen to her story about how these jobs challenged her usage of the Metric System and the English language, and led her to being escorted out of a Chicago ghetto by the police.

She told me how it all made sense, in a way, and how autism, ADD, ADHD, PTSD, depression and anxiety can be related. Doctor Les Jones has an inspiring life story. We talk about how he rose from a 1.9 grade point average to a 3.8 average, as he became the first in his family to ever go to college. The road was not paved in silk for Les in any way, either. His childhood was influenced by abuse, neglect and drug abuse in his household, and he was sent away from home at the age of fifteen to go to school alone and basically raise himself.

Bradley Staubes is a busy and multi-faceted musician frequently performing all around Oslo and beyond. As a keyboard player, he is the Music Director and Organist at The American Lutheran Church in Frogner. Bradley is one of the busiest freelance organists in the city, and plays over 100 different weddings, funerals, special services and concerts every year. He was director and accompanist for the Yuletide Chorale (Oslo’s English-language Christmas festival choir), and is currently accompanist for Ullern kammerkor and Vestre Aker kammerkor where he has also sung as a soloist.
He was the baritone in the men’s quartet ‘The Barbershop Avengers,’ with performances on the main stage at The Norwegian Opera & Ballet. As a cellist he has played with the Oslo Kammerorkester.
Painting in oils is a passion Bradley has returned to during current lockdowns, after a 25 year break. He is also a lifelong lover of interior design, and the apartment he and his husband Trond share in Oslo was profiled in Maison Interiør Magazine.

His book "Ginger Kid" was a top 5 pick on Amazon. Steve has also appeared on CBS' "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson", Showtime's "White Boyz in the Hood", VH1's "Countdown", Sundance's "On the Road in America", and ABC's "Barbara Walter's Special". He is executive producer of "Laughs" on Fox networks.
Steve was driving from Phoenix, Arizona and was on his way to Los Angeles, California when he and I spoke for this episode. We talked about standup comedy, of course, but we also discussed his journalism background, mentorship, dealing with hecklers when on stage, and how politics and comedy juxtapose. I asked Steve about the "Nowhere Comedy Club", which was founded by Steve and comedian Ben Gleib.
Steve also told me a very interesting and revealing story about an incident with Michael Richards, which caused me to reevaluate my judgement of Richards in relation to his 2006 standup performance at the Laugh Factory comedy club in late 2006. The world saw what it saw when an iPhone video was published of him launching into an expletive-laced racist tirade, but Steve's story about something he experienced with Michael Richards before the 2006 incident really moved me and changed my thoughts on Michael' Laugh Factory episode. He is one of Norway's most popular stand-up comedians and actors, and is known for his participation in the TV2 show and several films and television shows such as, "Izzat", "Hellfjord" and "Rikets Røst"". He was the source of both controversy and adoration for his hit television series "Jul i Tøyengata". In 2010 Ali received the Brobyggerprisen, a Norwegian prize for building relations between immigrants and Norwegian natives. His work is also about fighting prejudice. Zahid Ali has also toured with his stand-up show "Zahid Ali-live".
We talk about how Zahid, who is of Pakistani descent, gathered some of the most popular comedians in Norway to raise money for relief work in Pakistan after the earthquake disaster in 2004. All of the money raised was donated to the Embassy of Pakistan. Zahid talks about how things got very interesting when he handed over a sack of cash to the Pakistani Ambassador in Norway. We also shared our thoughts sharing the standup stage together, and also our individual experiences as entertainers in Norway.
Ralph Molina is a drummer, singer, and solo artist. Ralph has been a member of Crazy Horse since its beginning in 1962 as Danny & the Memories. He has performed on all releases by Crazy Horse, with and without Neil Young.
We talked about everything from his musical roots with singing in doo-wop groups in New York City, to how he and the band keep it spontaneous when recording and performing with Neil Young, to how Ralph has lasted so long in the music world.
