25 years of song craft in a nutshell:
I never dreamed I would end up here today, as an Amazon Best Seller, when I first plugged a microphone into my Dad's Awai stereo and recorded my first song at the age of 6. Over three decades later I've been on an almost unimaginable music adventure that has taken me from sell-out shows to live Radio One sessions, BBC and ITV television appearances and recordings and live shows with some of my favourite music artists.
My adventure has been colourful and I'm grateful for the amazing times I've had over the years.
Currently, I'm concentrating on my band ALL HAIL HYENA, running a Creative Media Company (voidwell.co.uk) making music videos for other bands, producing audio for commercial videos and making weird animations.
I'll probably chuck something new out at some point, so keep your ear to the ground.

I was inspired to write this as a response to the music industry treatment of Lola Young and the pressure to achieve. It happens to so many artists, but this particularly bothered me and something needs to change. There is a man, some call him a creature, who preys on the weaknesses and fears of humans. He sneaks in to your home during the day when you are away and waits. He waits. He waits in the dark corners where children fear to tread and at the end of shadowy corridors where women keep away. A considerable number of years ago now, I recorded an album with my long time friend and music companion Rob Ashworth. It was called Gobstopper and we recorded it in a studio he'd built. I'd written the majority of the songs on a piano I was given from the primary school where I'd worked because they were going to throw it in the skip, so I took it. I rescued it.The album wasn't an easy thing to make. Rob contributed the drums, engineered it and mixed it but I ended up in hospital part way through with tonsillitis that progressed into a chest infection and then pericarditis, being told I'd had a heart attack. I hadn't, it turned out, and then having an angiogram with a 50% chance of a stroke, I feel like I was lucky.When it came to finally finishing the album after my recovery, I had it mastered by Tim Dorney from Flowered Up / Republica fame and he did a fantastic job. The sad part though, was the label I was with at the time - White Label Music - wouldn't honour a physical release. They just couldn't afford it and so it didn't make much of an impact when it came out. I'm grateful for all they did for my musical career though, we had some good times and they put a lot of non-recoupable cash into my work. Massive props to them for that - they're great people with big hearts and they'll always have a place in mine.The studio we recorded it in ended up being flooded and we lost the piano :( Even worse, Rob lost his studio and it was never rebuilt. Sad times.It wasn’t all bad though. The label got me some cool sessions recording for Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins / Bella Union) during his time at Amazing Radio and also at Stereolab legend Andy Ramsay's studio for a video session which was a wonderful experience. Our publishing and recording deal came to an end and we left on uncomfortable terms in a way, mainly because I was a little blinkered by personal stuff going on. They're good people. Be a good person.

I hadn't, it turned out, and then having an angiogram with a 50% chance of a stroke, I feel like I was lucky.When it came to finally finishing the album after my recovery, I had it mastered by Tim Dorney from Flowered Up / Republica fame and he did a fantastic job. The sad part though, was the label I was with at the time - White Label Music - wouldn't honour a physical release. They just couldn't afford it and so it didn't make much of an impact when it came out. When I recorded Gobstopper with Rob Ashworth at the desk and on 70's drums, I wanted some instrumental tracks purely because they sounded so beautiful in the end.
The studio this was recorded in was flooded and the piano on the recording got taken down with it.
Not long after this album was finished, I was admitted to hospital with a suspected heart attack. Turns out it was just an infection in the wall of my heart.

This is an anthem I created by taking my guitar into the town centre, sitting at a table under a marquee and beckoning people to come over and answer personal questions. I'd take their name, our micro conversation and then play it back to them instantly on my guitar! After a full windy, freezing, finger-numbing few hours I took the scribblings and rough melodies back into the studio and arranged it into this song. Recorded at Groove Studios in Burnley with drums by Chris Lewis.

Edward Dee was a young boy who sadly passed away at the age of just 10 years old from Meningitis and Sepsis. His family set up a charity to raise money in his memory and I met his mum Elizabeth at a networking event. We talked about my songwriting services, so Elizabeth asked me if I could write a song about him. A few weeks passed and then I was humbled and honoured to be invited to sit down and have a chat about him over coffee and biscuits in their home town of Lytham. The more we talked about him, the more it became clear just how loved and noticed he was within the community. A real character with vigour and a lust for life and his passing has united the community in ways you could only imagine. The support for the charity and for this young man's family is mind boggling and the drive, passion and solidarity to raise money is commendable.
When I came back to my studio and began pulling our conversation together into lyrics, I sat down at my piano and started writing. I could almost feel his energy jumping off the page and it was an emotional process writing the melodies. It had to be as uplifting and determined as Edward clearly was in life and most importantly written for him. Something to sing to him, to his memory rather than a song about him.
It's A Song For Edward.
The song was released via Amuse.io as a charity single across all the major platforms, streaming services and Bandcamp on Friday 7th September 2018. All profits will be going to the charity and The Edward Dee Fund are looking for radio stations, TV stations and other platforms who would be willing to support its release by playing it on their shows.

We all feel loss of some kind throughout our lives but when we stop to think about the emotion, it's the same one we feel when we gain something in our lives too. Loss gives us something. It gives us something to grow upon, to nurture within ourselves and finally have our own little answer, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to this myriad of complexity we call existence.
Hold on to the small moments we share with each other and keep them burning. Pass them on. Be kind to each other. Be a Brown Little Bear now and again.

I was commissioned to write this piece as part of Painting Padiham in Lancashire by Burnley & Padiham Town Council. It includes the words of the general public and their answers to some questions I'd prepared for them to answer. This is the result!
