Michael Alcee, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in Tarrytown, NY, and is a Mental Health Educator at the Manhattan School of Music. In his first book,Therapeutic Improvisation: How to Stop Winging It and Own It as a Therapist, Michael demonstrated how all clinicians are artists, reading the changes like well-versed jazz musicians, finding the poetic turns in their client's stories like skilled writers, and reveling in the creative act that emerges in the humanistic encounter of psychotherapy.   In his forthcoming book, The Upside of OCD, Michael takes on the field's tilted view of OCD as merely a biological and behavioral condition. Instead, he claims that OCD is a misunderstood existential and empathic sensitivity that has served the life and work of notable OCD sufferers like climate activist Greta Thundberg, author John Green, record producer Jack Antonoff, biologist Charles Darwin, and innovator Nikola Tesla. Carrying on the relational work implied in Freud's case of the Ratman, Michael believes that OCD arises as an intriguing interplay of nature and nurture, one that can only be fully healed through an integrative approach that embraces meaning and feeling in equal measure alongside thoughts and behavior.  Michael has been a TEDx speaker and organizer and is a regular contributor at Psychology Today along with contributions to NPR, The Chicago Tribune, and The New York Times, among others.Sign up for 10% off of Shrink Rap Radio CE credits at the Zur Institute

Alexey Tolchinsky, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Maryland. He specializes in trauma work and anxiety disorders. He works in psychotherapy with neurodiverse patients, including individuals with Asperger’s disorder, dyslexia, and other conditions. A part of his practice includes working with immigrants struggling with adaptation to living in the US. He integrates cultural competency in his work. He also works with young adults dealing with life transitions, such as adaptation to the first year of college, and mature adults struggling with existential dilemmas and adapting to major life changes, such as divorce or retirement.Dr. Tolchinsky is a Clinical Fellow of the International Neuropscyhoanalysis Association. What this means is a mindful integration of contemporary neuroscience in psychodynamic psychotherapy. While these terms are a mouthful, he rarely uses technical jargon with his patients and speaks in human language. With that, his clinical work is informed by the theoretical models developed by leading psychotherapists and neuropsychologists. Dr. Tolchinsky's peer-reviewed research papers are all targeted to improve the efficacy of psychotherapy with hard-to-treat conditions, including PTSD and OCD. https://montgomerycountypsychologist.com/publications-for-general-readersSign up for 10% off of Shrink Rap Radio CE credits at the Zur Institute

Karl Ammann uncovers wildlife trafficking, poaching and other forms of brutal exploitation of the planet’s most iconic species. Circumventing red tape and challenging the status quo established by governments and supranational bodies, he discloses the shameful silence of international bodies and puts names and responsibilities behind the ongoing death of nature. He is a leader of the campaign that gained worldwide recognition of the bush meat crisis in Africa. He is an advisory director to several organizations, including The World Society for the Protection of Animals , The Cheetah Conservation Fund, and The Biosynergy Institute. After studying at St. Gall Graduate School of Economics and graduating from Cornell University’s Hotel Management School in 1974, Karl worked on new project development and marketing for InterContinental Hotels, first in Kinshasa where he helped to organize the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” with Muhammad Ali, and then worldwide, traveling to over 100 countries.Karl first recognized the scale of the bush meat trade in 1988, while traveling on one of the legendary Zaire River boats. Since then, he carries a camera as his sidearm, shooting scenes of chimpanzees, gorillas and other wild animals being butchered for sale as expensive bush meat. One of his priorities has been researching the status of the apes in Africa and Asia, which exposed the bush meat trade and the illegal trafficking of orphans. In the process, he also initiated decade-long ape research and conservation projects in the northern Congo.More recently he produced a series of documentaries exposing the trade of wildlife products and live animals, illustrating the little known characteristics of the demand side.Ammann’s reports and documentaries convinced the European Parliament and leaders of over twenty African states to sign a proclamation against the slaughter of apes and caused the government of Cameroon to convene a national conference on the illegal bush meat trade. For this work, he received the Dolly Green Award for Artistic Achievement at the 11th annual Genesis Awards banquet in Los Angeles in April 1997. Throughout his career, Ammann has won a wide range of awards, including TIME Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment.https://karlammann.com/about/https://www.karlammann.ch/ammann/deutschhttps://www.thetigermafia.co/karl@karlammann.chSign up for 10% off of Shrink Rap Radio CE credits at the Zur Institute

Avgi Saketopoulou is a psychoanalyst and professor who works with transgender kids and their families.Rather than buy into the notion that trauma can be cured, she reroutes our attention to what traumatized subjects do with their pain. Those who surrender to the fact that their pain cannot be eliminated, she argues, are sometimes able to do things with trauma. In this radical alternative to thinking about racialization, consent, and trauma, Avgi dares us to step into a different territory, where we do not guard the self but risk experience. On her website, she describes her work in the following terms:"In my office, located in Union Square, I treat children -as young as age 3- adults, couples, and polycules. I work with a wide array of issues, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties, and have extensive experience with variant genders, in both children and adults, and queer sexualities. My practice includes a racially and ethnically diverse range of individuals.I trained as a clinical psychologist in NY after having moved to the United States from Greece and Cyprus. I subsequently completed training as a psychoanalyst at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. As part of my academic work, I teach at the NYU PostDoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. I am also on the faculties of several other psychoanalytic institutes, such as the William Alanson White Institute, the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, the Stephen Mitchell Relational Center, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, where I offer intersectionally-informed courses on psyhosexuality and gender.I also contribute to my field by publishing my own research; by serving on the editorial boards of several academic journals; by leading study groups; and by supervising colleagues' clinical work. In October 2021, I co-chaired the inaugural conference "Laplanche in the States: the Sexual and the Cultural", the first US-based event dedicated to the work of Jean Laplanche (for more information, visit www.laplancheinthestates.com) I am also co-executor of the Muriel Dimen Literary Estate which administers Dr. Dimen's archive, as well as the Muriel Dimen Prize -through Div 39- and the Muriel Dimen Grant -through NYU Postdoc."Sign up for 10% off of Shrink Rap Radio CE credits at the Zur Institute

During the first half of his career, Dr. Mike Deninger rose to a leadership position in the education of deaf youth as an administrator at Gallaudet University. However, in his 40s traumatic childhood memories triggered a mental health crisis and an extended period of recovery. In the years that followed, he chose a new path as a trauma therapist and trainer after earning a counseling degree and trainer certifications in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and Eye Movement Integration (EMI). His innovations in trauma treatment culminated in the 2021 publication of "Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment." MEMI is an expansion of the original Eye Movement Integration technique developed in 1989 by Steve and Connirae Andreas of NLP renown. MEMI is distinguished from other eye movement therapies, because of its simple but clear theoretical model, its brevity and its rapid results. It also affords greater protection for clients than other eye movement therapies.Dr. Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that’s possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body’s neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought-after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. Mike now shares his knowledge of and experience with trauma treatment via live seminars and on-demand webinars as a trainer with the Arizona Trauma Institute. Dr. Shaw has undertaken a lot of research on moral injury, which is the damage done to one’s conscience or moral compass when that person perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one’s own moral beliefs, values, or ethical codes of conduct. Most research to understand moral injury has been with military Service Members and Veterans, as the nature of war and combat create situations where people may have experiences that contradict the values they live by in civilian life.Examples of potentially morally injurious events in the context of war include killing or harming others, when officers have to make decisions that affect the survival of others, and when medics are not able to care for all who were harmed in a conflict. The mission of the Great Philosophical Problems thinktank is to provide a unifying definition, and accompanying phenomenology, for the construct of Moral Injury to address suicide in veteran and wider civilian populations. Like the social lexicons provided by PTSD, they set out to provide the moral grammar for the “Signature Wound” of contemporary war.Dr. Shaw is currently working with the head ethicist at The US Army War College, Dr. Timothy Mallard, on a submission for the Australian Royal Commission Into Defence and Veteran Suicide to launch the international definition of Moral Injury.Dr. Shaw has a Ph.D. in Moral Injury and a Research Master's investigating the implications of Just War Theory. He has taught ethics at the University of Sydney and is also a leading voice in the critique of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas and the Just War Tradition.Sign up for 10% off of Shrink Rap Radio CE credits at the Zur Institute

Mary-Jayne Rust BIO: I am an art therapist and Jungian analyst in private practice in North London. Alongside this, I lecture and facilitate workshops on Ecopsychology in a wide range of settings.

My therapy training began in art therapy in 1979. During the 1980s I worked in a men’s prison, as well as with women with eating problems at the Women’s Therapy Centre, London during the early years of feminist psychotherapy. These two workplaces offered diametrically opposed experiences: working in a male hierarchy with perpetrators of abuse versus working with victims of abuse in a women’s collective.  This taught me a great deal about perpetrator and victim. Feminist psychotherapy helped broaden my understanding of how culture shapes our internal worlds.

In the early 1990’s I made several trips to Ladakh (on the Tibetan plateau) where I spent time with Helena Norberg-Hodge of ISEC.  This experience impressed on me the seriousness of our environmental crisis. I then discovered Ecopsychology, an emerging field weaving together the ecological, psychological, political and spiritual. I joined a group of like-minded therapists, and together we explored ecopsychological thinking, facilitation, and supervision. John Seed and Joanna Macy were two of our mentors in this journey. My interest in eating problems expanded into an inquiry into our collective consuming of the earth, and the relationship between mind and body, soul and the land. I became fascinated by the differences between indigenous and western worldviews and how we might enable ancient and modern to live together today.

I love colour and I am a visual artist. I live in Nth London beside Queenswood, part of the forest which originally covered Britain. Highgate Hill and Muswell Hill are on the terminal moraine left by a glacier of the last ice age.  I have an ongoing love affair with swimming in wild waters. Forest and pond, kingfisher, owl, cormorant and humans; it is all these places and relationships to whom I owe my thanks for the ideas that you find here.

It was during the armed conflict in 2011 when a group of fighters found Dr. Reda in a tent caring for trauma surviving children in Libya. The fighters indicated that Dr. Reda was needed on the frontlines of the fighting. Dr. Reda let them know that attending to the psychosocial needs of the children in the tent was indeed his frontline. After 12 years in exile, Dr. Reda was able to return to Libya. While the Libyan people’s physical wounds were prevalent, their psychological trauma often went unnoticed. Due to the stigma and lack of education, mental health is not typically a focus in Libya. Trauma survivors needed psychosocial care. Dr. Reda found that traumas experienced by refugees are similar to the dysfunctional cycles and family dynamics of trauma survivors in general. Receiving his master’s degree from Harvard University in Refugee and Global Mental Health after completing medical school in Libya and while undergoing extensive training with the University of Tennessee, Dr. Omar Reda is now a board-certified psychiatrist practicing at the Providence Healthcare System. Dr. Reda is a leading expert in Psychotraumatology and Trauma-Informed Care as well as the mental health of Muslims, immigrants and refugees, the Libyan revolution, and the Arab Spring, and is the author of several books and a highly sought-after dynamic public speaker. Living in Portland, Oregon with his wife and three daughters, Dr. Reda’s passion for healing focuses on tackling the family dysfunction and youth vulnerability resulting from trauma.

BIO I have worked at the Tavistock Clinic in London for over 20 years, an internationally renowned NHS Foundation Trust which provides clinical services and trains therapists and other professionals. I teach on the child psychotherapy and other psychological therapy courses at the Tavistock, and supervises therapists there. I also lead on training in child development, neuroscience and attachment theory, and have a particular interest in linking cutting-edge developmental findings with therapeutic practice. My clinical work in the NHS is primarily with issues of trauma and the effect of maltreatment on children as well as on the families and other adults in the lives of such children.

After having done a variety of jobs and activities in my early adulthood, including buying and selling antiques, working in housing advice, community support services and various adventures, in the late 1980s I trained as a humanistic and integrative adult psychotherapist, a year with IPSS and 4 years with the Minster centre in London. I then went on to train in psychoanalytic observational studies for a further 3 years at the Tavistock before undertaking the four year Tavistock training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children, young people and parents.

In addition, I have trained in a variety of other ways of delivering therapeutic work, most recently in Mindfulness. I have worked as a psychotherapist in private practice for over 25 years, and also in a variety of voluntary and statutory sector settings. These include Open Door, a psychotherapy service for young people in North London, GP Practices including Stamford Hill Group Practice, and for NHS Child mental health services in Enfield and also in Redbridge and Waltham Forest. A passion of mine has been developing new services for children and young people, for example in over 35 schools in Camden and East London and setting up Hear and Now, a counselling service for young people in Redbridge working in community locations as part of the local NHS Mental Health Trust. Until recently, I was an Associate Clinical Director at the Tavistock, responsible for a range of clinical services.

I also teach on a range of other courses and psychotherapy trainings in Britain and abroad, for example in Bologna, Istanbul and for 12 years, in Palermo, Sicily.

Jerry Hyde was educated at Bryanston School in Dorset and went to art school at Kingston before working in film, theatre, TV, and the music business. In his late twenties, he sought help for drug dependency and subsequently retrained as a psychotherapist. He followed a fairly conventional career throughout his 30's before completely losing the plot in his early 40's (he's now 50) and rebranding himself in the somewhat out-there style for which he's become known, which some have dubbed 'Gonzo Therapy'. Despite all attempts at mid-life self-destruction, he still has a very large and thriving practice. During his career, he's worked with many well-known names in the arts and creative fields, and this, plus his own background in the music, film and TV business, has formed his outlook and writing style.

In addition, I found the following on the web:

Jerry is a self-described: MENTOR, BESTSELLING AUTHOR, FILMMAKER, PODCASTER, PSYCHEDELIC INTEGRATOR, DENIM FREAK, COFFEE FIEND, and PROVOCATEUR.

BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF BLADESVILLE, DREAMACHINE, PLAY FROM YOUR FUCKING HEART, THE BOOK OF SIN,  and EMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

A Shadow therapist with 25 years of clinical experience, Hyde rejects many of the conventionally held views of the mainstream psychotherapy world. He works with couples and individuals and leads the largest men’s group practice in the UK.

An outspoken advocate of shamanic plant medicines he believes for some people a combination of deep psychotherapeutic work and psychedelic entheogens to be the most powerful way of bringing about real, lasting, and positive transformation.

Jerry made a film about his men’s work.  You can stream it for a small fee from www.makemeaman.com

Ariel Garten is probably one of the most interesting people you will meet. She is a Neuroscientist, mom, former psychotherapist, former fashion designer, and the co- founder and visionary of an amazing and highly successful tech startup Muse.

Muse tracks your brain during meditation to give you real-time feedback on your meditation, guiding you into the “zone” and solving the problem most of us have when starting a meditation practice. Muse lets you know when you are doing it right. With no formal business background, Ariel personally raised $18M to found Muse from Silicon Valley investors (as well as Ashton Kutcher). Muse is now used by hundreds of thousands of people to start or deepen their meditation practice, including by Mayo clinic. The Muse S also uses advanced EEG technology to track how well you focus, sleep and recharge. And the newly launched “Digital Sleeping Pill”, an intelligent Muse experience, helps you fall asleep and, if you have woken, encourages you back into sleep.

Ariel and Muse have been featured in over 1000 articles, including CNN (3x), Forbes, Fortune, Popular Science, NYT, WSJ, GQ, Men’s Health, O Magazine, and Wired.

Ariel’s mission in life is to help people understand how their brain and mind work - both the nuts and bolts and neurons, and how that plays out in the messy and beautiful human experience of living. She inspires people to understand that they can accomplish anything they want by understanding what actually goes on in their own mind.

Ariel is also the co-host of the Untangle Podcast.

Bernie Taylor is an independent naturalist, thought leader and author whose research explores the mythological connections and biological knowledge among prehistoric, indigenous and ancient peoples. His works in these areas include Biological Time (2004) and Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero (2017). Before Orion is premised on Joseph’s Campbell’s hero's journey monomyth that is at the core of stories worldwide among indigenous peoples, the ancients, and our modern society. Before Orion explores a deeper root for this monomyth by looking at how hunter-gatherers viewed themselves within the natural and spiritual worlds through Paleolithic cave art from 40,000 years ago. Taylor proposes that select cave paintings are fundamental pieces in the human journey to self-realization, the foundation of written language, and a record of biological knowledge that irrevocably impacted some of the artistic styles, religious practices, and stories that are still with us. Taylor addresses a profound archaeological elephant in the room by opening up an uncharted place in our history, which points to the cultural ancestors of mankind in western North Africa. Before Orion will change the idea of who you think you are. Bernie is widely interviewed on podcasts and speaks at popular conferences and academic symposiums across social and physical science disciplines.

His vocal talent is also present in the classroom, as he is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences (CLPS) at Brown University. Moreover, he counts undergraduate work at Howard University, receiving a Master’s degree from Columbia University, and Doctorate from the University of California-Berkeley in his academic success. Previous to achieving his educational exploits, Starx’s success allowed him to tour alongside the likes of noted folk artist Justin Trawick, plus perform with artists including EDM entrepreneur and electro producer Tittsworth and global dance music icon Dave Nada. Currently, Starx has joined forces with producer Stephon Alexander, a theoretical physics professor at Brown University. The results include jazzy, Afro-Caribbean styled-single “Dancing for Freedom,” alongside Sierre Leoneon vocalist Kanjia. This song is a precursor to the forthcoming EP, titled Higher Science, wherein Malik is rapping over a diversity of Alexander’s musical stylings. “Dancing for Freedom” has 2 Million Plays on Tik Tok

Can you imagine going blind as a teenager? When most people were preparing for the adventure of adult life, Chad was watching the world he grew up with fade to black. But instead of feeling sorry for himself, he told himself "I’m gonna make blind look good.”

He became the first blind executive to graduate from the Harvard Business School leadership program and was hired by a Global Fortune 500 consulting firm. He wrote groundbreaking software that Oracle said was impossible, which created job opportunities for hundreds of millions of people. After serving as the VP of Corporate and PnT Finance, Chad currently leads Cross-Industry Sales Development at Red Hat, the world’s only multibillion-dollar open-source software company, and continues to shatter traditional notions of what people think is possible

His book ‘Blind Ambition’ is an eye-opening account of how he found his vision by losing his eyesight. He’s on a mission to use his gift of going blind to inspire others to shine a light on their own blind spots. Oh and he’s an avid downhill skier... (no joke!)
